An Indigenous woman has announced her intent to run for the leadership of Alberta’s NDP. This follows former Alberta premier Rachel Notley's recent announcement that she is stepping down as party leader after almost 10 years. Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse was elected as the MLA for Edmonton-Rutherford in May 2023 and garnered acclaim as the first First Nations woman to be elected to the Alberta Legislature, and the first to run for leader. She is the second Indigenous woman, to Pearl Calahasen, Metis, elected in 1989. Calahoo Stonehouse is a member of the Michel First Nation, a mother to five children with an extensive resume, including an arts degree and a Masters in Science and Resource Economics. Before her career in politics, she was the reconciliation advisor to the president and vice provost at the University of Alberta, and most recently, the Executive Director of the Yellowhead Indigenous Education Foundation.

I saw this going around on reddit but not tumblr so I figured I'd share it here.
Tumblr media
The image was posted by Danielle herself and can be seen here. This symbol is associated with Liberty Fund, a far right American think tank that credits themselves as partially responsible for Ronald Reagans presidential campaign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Danielle has claimed that it's not related and is the cuneiform symbols for "freedom" and "liberty", but ask yourself, do you really trust her to tell the truth? She's revised her campaign promises multiple times, continues to condone private healthcare despite signing a measure to protect public healthcare. I'm just saying it wouldn't be a stretch to guess she might be funded by them, afterall she has some pretty damn uncanadian ideas that parallel those across the border.

PROTECT TRANS KIDS
I live in Alberta, Canada, which you may have heard is the latest province to introduce their version of "parental rights" legislation.
Here are some of the things our premier, Danielle Smith, promised to do on Wednesday;
mandate teachers report to parents (and ask permission if the child is younger than 16) if a child wants to use a different name/different pronouns in class
mandate permission forms anytime a teacher wants to mention gender or sexual orientation
ban children under the age of 16 from accessing hormones or puberty blockers
ban top & bottom surgery for anyone under the age of 18 (bottom, surgery is already illegal for anyone under 18 in Canada)
ban transgender women from competing in womens sports
These laws have been called "draconian" and were not drafted with consideration from medical, pediatric, or LGBT organizations. Danielle Smith is pandering to the social conservative wing of her party and putting queer kids in danger because of it.
"Parental Rights" are a sham that ignores the lived reality of queer kids.
I've spent the past few days feeling angry and heartbroken, and I wanted to spread awareness and share with my American followers because I haven't seen many news outlets outside of Canada covering this.

Whatever you do, don't vote blue.
As one of my Grade 5 students so eloquently and aptly put it:
"Smith worries me, and I don't trust her. She's been recorded multiple times saying 'Should the government really have to cover 100% of the cost of a doctor's visit?'. Which is like, yeah. Because some people can't afford to pay and if you don't go to the doctor you die."
Healthcare isn't a luxury and it's not optional.
It's literally listed as a right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which we have ratified.

It usually feels kinda tense during an election, with the suspense of who will win, y'know? But the Alberta election (voting May 29) hasn't been officially called by the UCP (the leading party -UCP in this case- has to announce the election, but it can technically happen without them announcing it) and it feels like besides the political ads from the NDP about healthcare and all the awful things Danielle Smith has said, no one is doing anything. An election is happening as we speak, but the UCP is trying as hard as possible to not talk about it. smh

I'm a 4th Generation Canadian Combat Veteran and an Albertan. I fully support Danielle Smiths comments on the Poppy.
The increasing desperation of Ms Notley and the Alberta NDP have them grasping for anything to prevent their inevitable defeat. It is hilariously disingenuous that the NDP and its Woke minions who base their central world view on Canada being a colonial racist relic and who use every opportunity to disparage its history and institutions and the Old Stock Canadians who fought the world wars for…

The Alberta NDP’s path to success in a general election that’s still three years away places a new emphasis on small-town Alberta, says leader Naheed Nenshi. “I think it’s fair to say that in the past, Alberta’s New Democrats have not been as visible as we should be outside of Calgary and Edmonton. So we have to show up in cities like Red Deer and Lethbridge and Medicine Hat and Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray more than we have,” Nenshi said in a recent interview. “We also need to show up in smaller communities and in truly rural areas, and really help folks see what our offer is.” Nenshi said the 87-riding strategy is introducing him to well-prepared NDP volunteers who give him confidence in the party’s future. “We’ve got wonderful people who’ve been working for us and wonderful people who will run for us all over the province.” The former three-term Calgary mayor said he’s warmly greeted at events like the Ponoka Stampede in central Alberta. An NDP resurgence is evident in constituencies like Highwood, immediately south of Calgary, which boasts a top-five NDP membership total, Nenshi said.

Danielle Smith is scrambling to make her Alberta Sovereignty bill look less like garbage. We have to trust her that she didn't intend to give sweeping powers to a bunch of career politicians.
It's important to remember that Danielle Smith has zero idea what she's doing. Governing a province is a great deal different than throwing out absurd comments on Twitter or a talk radio show that people listen to in between shit posting memes on Facebook much to the disgust of relatives.
The goal of the neoliberals has always been to keep their boots rested on the backs of the rest of us. The risk of any government that works for the people must be avoided at all costs. Smith and her talking heads grossly overplayed their ability to rage farm public frustration into a power grab.
Justin Trudeau did the strategic thing by playing his cards close to his vest. Smith would have certainly campaigned on any response from the federal Liberals, as she's been placing her bets on rage farming disapproval towards JT and the Sussex Street Posse harder than the right wing media sought to undermine the Alberta NDP.
Danielle Smith has a long track record of not working well with others, all the way back to her school board work. Unfortunately, working well with others matters more when every decision you make profoundly affects everyone than it did in kindergarten. Alberta needs a Premier who actually learned the important stuff in kindergarten.

Member Irwin: Premier, trans people aren’t a threat. They’re not a problem to be fixed, and choosing to put them at risk by presenting them as a problem is wrong.

Well, at least Edmonton's a solid orange. :/
I'd like to say that I can't believe people voted for the UCP after all their bs, but tbh I'm not surprised.
Just disappointed.

I don’t usually get too political on this blog, but…
If you’re from Alberta, for the love of all that is good in humanity, please go and VOTE.
Danielle Smith wants to privatize healthcare, remove funding from programs that actively help people, blames late stage cancer diagnosis patients for not noticing their condition sooner, among numerous other terrible things. And true to the usual UCP bull, she cares more about money and oil and trades more than the actual people of the province.
She is a huge admirer of Ron DeSantis and thinks he’s doing a great job, which I’m sure anyone from the US and especially Florida can tell you is NOT a good thing!!
Please… if you want a premier that at least cares about people and not just money, vote NDP.
Rachel Notley is far from perfect, but she is a hell of a lot better than the alternative. She at least actually cares about people, and cares about the marginalized in our society. She may not balance the budget, but she will fund education, healthcare and other important things, rather than funnelling everything into a dying economy and ignoring the citizens struggling.
If you don’t want hate and cold disregard to rule our province for the next 4 years, vote NDP. Liberal, Green and any other party don’t stand a chance. This is UCP vs NDP, period.
Vote orange if you care about the people around you.
Thanks for listening. Let’s all cross our fingers that tonight’s vote isn’t the start of rights being taken away. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
