Song Review: Todd Rundgren, Arthur Brown, Mel Collins, Chris Poland and Ian Paice - “21st Century Schizoid Man”

The 21st-century version sounds almost exactly like the 20th-century version, rendering Todd Rundgren, Arthur Brown, Mel Collins, Chris Poland and Ian Paice’s remake of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” pretty much pointless.

Rundgren and Brown are so swathed in effects, their 2024 voices come off as not dissimilar to Greg Lake’s of 1969. And while latter-day Crim sax man Collins, former Megadeath guitarist Poland and Deep Purple drummer Paice do a fine job of recreating the first song on the first King Crimson LP, such reproduction is better suited to a live tribute band than to a studio tribute record, the likes of which do better with reinterpretation.

In any event, “Schizoid Man” announces the April 19 arrival of Reimagining the Court of the Crimson King, featuring Crimson singer Jakko Jakszyk, drummer Carmine Appice and Hawkwind alumni Alan Davey, Paul Rudolph and Nik Turner, in one of his final performances, among others.

Perhaps they’ll do something different with their songs. As for “Schizoid Man,” the original will do just fine.

AFI's All Hallow's E.P. returns to vinyl on October 4 via Craft Recordings in association with Nitro Records. Priced at $30, the 1999 album is celebrating its 25h anniversary.

The four-song EP is pressed on 10" vinyl with two color variants: Spectral Pink and Lantern Light (AFI webstore exclusive). Alan Forbes' cover art has been recolored with fluorescent ink. A 10x20 coffin-shaped blacklight poster is included.

The last episode of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tv version aired on February 9, 1981. The 6th episode recalled the events following the crew's departure from the Resteraunt at the End of the Universe. In divergence from the radio play, the crew found themselves in a stunt ship about to plung into a sun instead of in a battleship at the lead of an attack fleet. The show then realigned with the radio show with Arthur Dent and Ford Predect ending up on Ark B and then stranded on prehistoric Earth. (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, TV Event)

Hawkwind Co-founder Mick Slattery Dies at 77

Mick Slattery, a co-founding member of Hawkwind, died March 17 “after a short illness,” Dave Brock said in a statement.

The guitarist was 77.

Slattery and Brock formed Famous Cure in 1967 before splitting off to create Hawkwind in ’69.

“In the late ’60s, we used to rehearse in my upstairs flat … playing loud music, much to the annoyance of our neighbors,” Brock said. “Fly free, old friend.”

Though he left Hawkwind almost immediately after appearing on one album, Slattery would go on to work with fellow alumni in bands such as Space Ritual with Nik Turner - who died last year - and Hawkestrel, with whom Slattery has been recording.

“I loved his playing and was planning to ask him to do more soon,” bandleader Alan Davey said.

“He was a jolly friendly chap and so down to earth. Gonna miss ya, Mick, R.I.P.”
