The influence of Queen Margaret of Austria at the Spanish Court
Philip III of Spain still retains the reputation of a weak, dim-witted monarch who preferred hunting and travelling to governing and therefore turned over the reins of power to his royal favorite, the Duke of Lerma. Despite the attempts of biographers and eulogists to deny that Margaret of Austria exercised a political voice at her husband’s court, and despite chroniclers’ negative assessments of the impact of the queen’s advice, Margaret of Austria did succeed in voicing her opinions and winning the ear and the support of Philip III.
Venetian ambassadors noted the queen’s interest in political matters and her desire to have a say in the making of decisions. Ottaviano Bon, reported in 1602 that Queen Margaret of Austria “is capable of great things, so much so that she would govern if she could in a manner different from that of the King.” In fact, Bon implied that the queen’s political intuition was sounder than her husband’s. Francesco Soranzo reported that Philip III loved his queen very dearly. Soranzo described Margaret of Austria as “astute and very skillful in securing the King’s love ... she wants to be respected and known as queen.” Although Soranzo implied that Margaret of Austria was an intelligent and resourceful queen, he added that she “likes to have others think that she has great authority with the king, but she does not have it except in petitions of little importance.”
According to Soranzo, the Duke of Lerma watched the queen and ensured that she had little influence with the king. Ottaviano Bon, who noted Margaret of Austria’s political acumen, also reported that she was “controlled by the Duchess of Lerma and the Duke her husband ... and the king has greater estimation of them than of her in many things, which makes her reticent, melancholic, and without any authority.” The more frequent references to Margaret of Austria center around her unhappiness at the court, an unhappiness brought on by the Duke of Lerma’s influence over Philip III. Hans Khevenhüller, the imperial ambassador in Madrid, detailed a conversation he had with the queen in which Margaret of Austria expressed her discontent with the Spanish court. She had told him that she would “much rather be a nun in a convent in Goricia (Styria) than Queen of Spain.”
The Duke of Lerma had gone so far as to interfere in the private moments that the king and queen shared by instructing her not to speak about political matters with the king at any time, and especially not in her moments alone at night with Philip III. To ensure the queen’s compliance, Lerma threatened to arrange trips for Philip III that would leave Queen Margaret alone in Madrid. He also threatened to remove María Sidonia, the queen’s lady-in-waiting and closest friend, from the court. In an entry from 1601, the chronicler Luis Cabrera de Córdoba noted that the queen was ill and that the illness was a result of her displeasure with the king’s absence and the attempt to control her servants. Margaret of Austria’s illness did cause Philip III to return to the royal palace and remain with her until her health improved.
Lerma’s efforts to remove María Sidonia from the court failed, as did his attempts to send the queen’s Jesuit confessor, Richard Haller, back to Central Europe. Lerma also did not succeed in silencing the queen. In fact, Margaret of Austria questioned Lerma’s political and financial policies, and went so far as to warn Philip III that the Junta de Desempeño, set up by Lerma in 1603 to improve the monarchy’s financial situation, had only worsened Spain’s economic problems.
Queen Margaret consistenly sought to negotiate favourable marriages for her sisters, and successfully arranged for them to marry important princes. She defended the interests of her Austrian Habsburg relatives at the Spanish court. Khevenhüller employed the queen’s influence on numerous occasions. Margaret was particularly successful in getting Spanish aid for her brother, Archduke Ferdinand. She convinced Philip III to give him a monthly stipend of 5000 ducats. The king listened to her requests and to her comments. Philip III had an “affectionate, close relationship” with Margaret, and paid her additional attention after she bore him a son in 1605, the future Philip IV.
Queen Margaret was also a great patroness of the arts, who dedicated her life to pious foundations and charitable works. As well as her husband receiving many gifts of important paintings, Margaret also benefitted. She received works by Jacopo da Empoli, Alessandro and Cristofano Allori and Domenico Passignano, as well as a magnificent painting by Federico Barocci, all from Florence. Margaret of Austria also encouraged Philip IlI’s tendencies toward piety and religious devotion. During her lifelime, the queen maintained close relationships with several religious individuals.
Queen Margaret died while giving birth to her youngest child in 1611. When she died at the age of twenty-six, rumors abounded that she had been poisoned by the Duke of Lerma’s close associate, Rodrigo Calderón, whom the queen had criticized openly. Numerous Spaniards bemoaned the great loss Margaret’s death meant for the Spanish kingdoms; there were even those who claimed that Margaret of Austria had died a martyr. Her husband never remarried and died ten years later.
