Auburn is a shade of warm, highly saturated brown that, like all brown things, tends towards orange hues in the light.
Red is a shade of red.

The Romance Recipe by Ruby Barrett
Amy Chambers: restaurant owner, micromanager, control freak.
Amy will do anything to revive her ailing restaurant, including hiring a former reality-show finalist with good connections and a lot to prove. But her hopes that Sophie’s skills and celebrity status would bring her restaurant back from the brink of failure are beginning to wane…
Sophie Brunet: grump in the kitchen/sunshine in the streets, took thirty years to figure out she was queer.
Sophie just wants to cook. She doesn’t want to constantly post on social media for her dead-in-the-water reality TV career, she doesn’t want to deal with Amy’s take-charge personality and she doesn’t want to think about what her attraction to her boss might mean…
Then, an opportunity: a new foodie TV show might provide the exposure they need. An uneasy truce is fine for starters, but making their dreams come true means making some personal and painful sacrifices and soon, there’s more than just the restaurant at stake.
Genres: contemporary, romance

Hi hello. Is your Staircase AU inspired by the Netflix true crime doc or should I go outside to touch grass? Is an owl involved? Whatever it is, I want it ☺️
Listen, you are online the exact correct amount, do not venture outside. Yes!! I went through a phase last spring where I watched The Staircase just over and over as a comfort blanket and then I turned to YouTube pretty sure I could solve the thing. (I mean, I didn't, but whatever.) For an AU, I was thinking Louis would be the documentary editor who (like Sophie Brunet) falls in love with Harry, accused murderer, via the footage he spends millions of hours watching. (Harry could charm his way out of murder, as we're all aware.) I have at least two full pages of notes, but I don't have a plot beyond how they meet. And then I watched this panel where this woman very correctly pointed out how the documentary and everything that followed centers Michael Peterson and not Kathleen, and I lost my fervor a bit, so I don't know if this will ever become a real thing.
@larrieblr I was typing this up when I got your ask!

Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux in Blue Is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013)
Cast: Léa Seydoux, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Salim Kechiouche, Aurélien Recoing,  Catherine Salée, Benjamin Siksou, Mona Walravens, Alma Jodorowsky, Jérémie Laheurte, Anne Loiret, Benoît Pilot. Screenplay: Abdellatif Kechiche, Ghalya Lacroix, based on a graphic novel by Jul Maroh. Cinematography: Sofian El Fani. Film editing: Sophie Brunet, Ghalya Lacroix, Albertin Lastera, Jean-Marie Lengelle, Camille Toubkis
Though it was cut down by its team of five editors from 800 hours worth of footage, it's still at least half an hour too long. And considering the controversies that have arisen since its release, including charges of abuse by the director of not only the lead actresses but also the crew, the sex scenes inevitably have something exploitative about them. But Blue Is the Warmest Color remains exceptional in large part because it's one of the most intimate portraits of a human relationship on film. The jury at Cannes was right in citing not only the director but also the two actresses, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux, when it gave the film the Palme D'Or. Exarchopoulos in particular demonstrates a rare courage, not for exposing her body but for allowing the rawness of her emotions to show forth. There are moments when her character, Adèle (Kechiche changed the character's name from "Clémentine" when he cast her), becomes almost pitiable in her helpless infatuation with Seydoux's Emma, Exarchapoulos's fresh beauty becoming disfigured in her portrayal of Adèle's suffering at the inability to make the kind of fusion she desires with Emma. It's a fable about the limitations of love that transcends sexual orientation. The film's NC-17 rating once again demonstrates the wrong-headedness of the American ratings board's approach to sexuality, as opposed to its blithe acceptance of any extreme of violence in film.

A ridiculous Leverage AU concept popped into my head last night that's cracking me up. So first, it's Leverage OT3 having teamed up as a criminal crew without meeting Nate and Sophie. I'm picturing it in like a cyberpunk setting, but could potentially just be a canon-adjacent setting where the OT3 joined forces without Nate's influence, still pursuing crime for personal gain.
They've become a force to be reckoned with, a target of law enforcement and other criminal elements alike--probably clashed with at least pieces of Moreau's organization more than once--but no one has been able to touch them. Everyone with any connection to the criminal underworld knows about the genius Hacker Hardison and his cyber-crime empire, and everyone knows about his two closest lieutenants: a incredible Thief and an unstoppable Hitter, known only as "Parker" and..."Baby."
Some know only that much, and, when meeting the crew, many are prone to guess that the dainty blonde must be "Baby," and thus the glowering brunet must be "Parker."
The slightly better informed know that the Thief is "Parker" and the Hitter "Baby," but aren't 100% sure which is which.
The truly well-informed folks in the criminal underworld know who is who and enough of their reputations that although "Baby" is spoken of in hushed tones, since they know of no other name for the most elite Hitter in the business, no one dares to even think of calling him that to his face. That can get difficult for people who have to do business with him directly or discuss matters involving him with Parker or Hardison. None of the three ever offer any alternatives. (Every so often a newbie criminal comes along and decides to crack a joke about the name, often some variation on "putting Baby in a corner" and is quickly warned by their peers that 1) you do not joke about Baby--he could kill you with a blade of grass and is known to materialize in the most unexpected times and places--and 2) that specific joke has been made a million times already.)
Behind the scenes, of course, the trio's partnership is quite egalitarian, and Eliot's name is used freely, but 1) neither Parker nor Eliot is comfortable being the face of their organization, while Hardison is happy to LARP his nerdy little heart out as an evil overlord, and 2) Eliot had reasons to not want his real name spread around too much and made the tactical error of giving Hardison a little too much freedom in deciding what to call him in front of people.
Nate eventually does come on the scene, finally disgusted enough to break ties with his "lawful" but corrupt organization and willing to turn to the criminals he used to chase to cut a deal. His boldness at asking for a meeting in addition to what they knew of him as an investigator piques their interest, but they're disappointed when he stumbles in unkempt and still fairly inebriated.
He gains their interest back when, even in his drunken state and having never laid eyes on any of them, he sweeps one look around their temporary HQ, immediately clocks Parker as THE Parker despite her just standing still next to Hardison, and, by process of elimination, turns to Eliot and says, "So, you must be Baby."

Dying to know how Van Helsing "signed" his phonograph entry in all-caps. Did he just suddenly bellow his surname into the phonograph at full volume in case Jonathan wasn't sure who was speaking?
(I'm also not at all clear on why VH is leaving notes by phonograph rather than just writing a note, but at least the "how" of that is fairly obvious.)

It seems like a lot of modern vampire fiction implies or outright shows that a vampire can drain an entire adult of blood, either completely or enough to kill them, in one meal (and they feed frequently). And then here's Dracula implying that 3 adult vampires are going to share a single small child.
I mean, I know people talk about portion sizes in the USA being excessively large, but the vampires of Sunnydale/Bon Temps/etc. are apparently taking this to the extreme.

Dream of the Endless is back in his cage for Halloween, and he is not happy.
I, on the other hand, am delighted by how well the design carved up, particularly how clearly Dream's eyes glow.
I ended up decreasing the width of the binding circle a bit to fit better on the pumpkin without shrinking Dream and the cage down any further, and the chains are a little chunkier to be carveable with the tools I have, but overall the concept translated onto the pumpkin very well.
I think it looks even better in person--it's hard to capture well on a phone camera.

My #1 post of 2022
Suddenly tickled by the idea of Death giving Dream a mobile phone (whatever magical version can get service in the Dreaming) to facilitate him keeping in touch with his one (1) human friend Hob. (And maybe even making more friends? Hint, hint, little brother.)
She assures him she's taken care of everything. The only thing he needs to do is give this sequence of numbers to Hob (or any other human he wants to be able to contact him). He'll know what to do. Death has already set up everything else on the phone--she even set a ringtone for him!
Dream has never cared enough about human telecommunications to know what a ringtone is, and he's too distracted by insisting that he doesn't need a phone--he and Hob have managed fine for centuries without one--to think to ask about it.
He realizes this was a mistake only later, when he's looming dramatically and impressively over someone as Lord Morpheus, and suddenly music begins to blare:
🎶 "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream! Make him the cutest that I've ever seen..." 🎶
(It gets through an entire verse before he figures out where the music is coming from.)

" sophie . " tyler was taken about by his old flame who he hadn't seen in years . tyler had always wondered what became of her , since it had been over twenty-five years since he had seen her . he was young when they met , they both were and now she was in new orleans . " what are you doing here . . i mean how are you , what have you been up to ? " he clear had questions for the brunet .
Tumblr media
Sophie was in a hurry and it would be easy for her to chalk that up to being stressed and unsure how things would go with her and Tyler. She didn't even realize who it was until he turned around. "Tyler?"

In The Staircase Episode Eight,” America’s Sweetheart or: Time Over Time,” directed by co-creator Antonio Campos, Sophie Brunet (Juliette Binchoe), and Michael Peterson’s (Colin Firth) adult children let go of their fantasy of him. On February 24, 2017, Jean-Xavier Lestrade (Vincent Vermignon) conducts an interview with Michael that he promises to show Sophie sometime in the future. Afterward, the author officially pleads guilty in court via the Alford Plea. Candace Hunt Zamperini (Rosemarie DeWitt) reads a victim impact statement revealing that she still holds anger toward Michael. The only person there to support Michael outside of his defense lawyer David Rudolf (Michael Stuhlbarg), is his French editor girlfriend Sophie, who’s excited to start their new life in Paris. All the adult children check in with each other through text.
During Michael’s Alford Plea, His eldest son Clayton Peterson (Dane DeHaan) spends the day with his family. Next, Margaret Ratliff (Sophie Turner) works on the pre-production of her documentary, then flies in to watch the dance performance her little sister Martha Ratliff (Odessa Young) choreographed. Finally, Todd Peterson (Patrick Schwarzenegger) spends the evening with his mother, Patty Peterson (Trini Alvarado).
Meanwhile, Sophie packs up the Durham apartment while Michael watches himself on the television. They start fighting when the author says he doesn’t want to move to Paris. Sophie sees through Michael the minute he brings up needing to be there for his absent children. The French editor leaves the apartment forever when Michael reveals that he never loved her. Back in the hotel, Jean-Xavier plays his last interview with the author to Sophie. Sophie realizes she never knew Michael.
During the December 2011 pre-trial hearing, David successfully argues that Michael deserves a re-trial because the prosecution used misleading evidence to convict him. Michael’s big brother Bill Peterson (Tim Guinee), ex-wife Patty, Sophie, and all the adult children come to Durham to support him. The author is freed from prison until the new trial date. Unfortunately, the holes in the supposed “ideal” family come out during their celebratory night. Todd is now the family screw-up, and Michael relies on Clayton for anything he needs. During the dinner, the author feels overwhelmed eating in a Mexican restaurant for the first time in ten years. Michael emotionally withdraws from Martha after she brings up a queer character from one of his novels. He snaps at birthday girl Margaret, who picks a cheesecake for dessert in a Mexican restaurant.
On December 7, 2001, miserable Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette) reaches out to her sister Candace for help though sadly, they don’t really “hear” each other. Michael emails Kathleen a peace offering, including tickets to a sold-out Christmas ball. Later, he comes home to a happy Kathleen dressing in a ball gown to loud cheerful music. The two of them make love on her dressing room table. During the ball, Michael and Kathleen drink, dance, and enjoy each other’s company all evening.
Hours before Kathleen’s death, Michael rents America’s Sweetheart, directed by Joe Roth from Blockbuster, then checks on her soaking in the bath. She laments that they can’t afford to travel to Aruba or Paris. Michael half-jokes that they can afford pasta and Blockbuster. About an hour later, Kathleen laughs joyfully as she and Michael watch the hokey romantic comedy. Todd checks in on them before heading out to a party with a friend. After the movie, Kathleen listens to some voicemails, including one from an employee named Helen. She needs to check a presentation before her trip to Toronto.
Kathleen calls Helen, then realizes she left her work laptop at the offices. She asks Helen to email the presentation to Michael. He comes into their kitchen. Kathleen tells Michael that she needs to check his email for the presentation. Michael talks her out of reviewing the presentation into the morning. The sequence appears to re-tell the murder until Kathleen and Michael lounge next to the pool. Kathleen talks to Michael about what is happening in their adult children’s lives in 2017, including how Caitlin has a baby. Kathleen emotionally tortures Michael in his fantasies. The Staircase Miniseries ends with Michael sitting up in bed alone in 2017.
SOPHIE’S RECKONING
Michael reveals part of his true self to Jean-Xavier and Sophie through a recorded video interview. The sequence starts with a crying Sophie walking to her car in a dark parking lot. Jean-Xavier’s recorded voice asks Michael why he wanted to talk to him. Michael’s voice-over says ‘baseball.’ Then a cut to a lit-up hotel hallway with Jean-Xavier’s voice repeating the word baseball. He tells Michael not to worry about the time. Finally, cut to Jean-Xavier and Sophie watching the interview on his laptop in a hotel room. Michael speaks about how as a young boy, he fantasized about a neighborhood girl and one of his little league teammates. These sexual dreams made Michael realize that he was attracted to both genders.
The future author knew he had to hide his bisexuality based on his father’s horrific reaction to his sexuality. First, Michael’s father caught him and his teammate experimenting. The author tears up on camera as he talks about his father’s violent response to his queerness. Then, Michael returns to the story about listening to classical music with his mother alone in his father’s car. Though now Michaels reveals he had a black eye when he first discovered the power of classical music. After that, the author knew it was safer to lie, perhaps explaining why he hides significant facets of his life from everybody who cares about him.
Jean-Xavier turns the volume up on his laptop. Sophie lounges on the couch with a guarded expression on her face. Recorded Jean-Xavier asks about what Michael has been holding back all this time. There is a close-up on Michael’s face as he blinks back tears. He never told Kathleen about his bisexuality. This revelation contradicts what Michael said during the filming of the documentary. Sophie shakes her head in frustration. Tears slide down Michael’s face when he explains that he could never fully reveal himself to Kathleen. Sophie’s face withers in pain when he talks about how lying seems okay if you get away with it. Recorded Jean-Xavier asks Michael if he killed Kathleen. The author denies murdering her.
When Jean-Xavier presses pause on the interview, Sophie turns away from the screen in disgust. The characters speak French for the rest of the scene. Finally, the editor sputters out that Michael lied about everything. Sophie looks puzzled as she slowly realizes that she doesn’t know Michael. Jean-Xavier tries to excuse the author’s behavior by saying maybe he is trying to stop deceiving everybody. Sophie stands up, moving away from the couch. She faces Jean-Xavier from across the table. Sophie breaths in and out, trying not to cry. The director explains that he doesn’t know how to react to the interview. Jean-Xavier stares into Sophie’s eyes when he says that she will be happier without Michael in her life.
Sophie cries as she tries to get her friend to say that her ex-boyfriend couldn’t have killed Kathleen. She couldn’t live with herself if she helped get a murderer out of prison. Jean-Xavier muffles back tears as he shakes his head. He can’t reassure Sophie because he doesn’t know the truth. So, they must sit with the fact that Michael may have murdered Kathleen.
LAST THOUGHTS
The Staircase miniseries ends with more questions than answers. Michael’s innocence or guilt regarding Kathleen’s murder remains a mystery. Everybody involved in the case has their own story, but we don’t know the truth. However, we know that Michael’s lies and manipulations isolate him from those who love him. Perhaps the best punishment is that the author lives alone in Durham, surrounded by questions about what happened to Kathleen on December 9, 2001. Let us know what you think of the miniseries in the comments below.

reblogging this because after searching for forever, I finally found myself a
Vahlok the Jailer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for the longest time, I had an image of Vahlok in my head as a man with long, dark hair and pale eyes, but despite having an extensive repertorie of metal singers at my fingertips, I could never find the right person... until I stumbled across this model, photographed by Sophie Narsès. yes, he and Miraak were the stereotypical blond-and-brunet pair of friends, until they, you know, weren't.
if 'i fear no fate' were a movie...
the loveliest @bougainvillea-and-saltwater gave me yet another chance to be self-indulgent and tagged me to share more of my casting choices for my fic, i fear no fate (for you are my fate)! 💖 I wasn't able to decide on one for everyone who's shown up or who's due to show up, but here's who I have so far:
Elentari Bellefeuille, the Last Dragonborn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've said it before and I'll say it again: this model for Armstreet makes me think of Ellie every time I see her, but I also imagine her as having shades of Nastya Kusakina and Elle Fanning to her. give any of them pale silvery hair, green eyes, a beauty mark or two, and little pointy ears, and they'd be perfect for Elentari!
Miraak, the First Dragonborn
Tumblr media Tumblr media
with his long golden hair and straight nose, I couldn't help but choose model Jorge Pla as my fancast for him. at this point in the story, Miraak has black sclerae, burning blue irises, and dark-coloured ink stains running down his cheeks, but I imagine he looked a lot like this prior to Apocrypha (or after, at some point👀?).
Lucien Flavius, Scholar Extraordinaire
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I challenge anyone to tell me that Toby Regbo isn't perfect for Lucien. look at him in that rightmost pic and tell me he isn't standing at Ellie's side, watching some form of nonsense unfold and wondering what he'll write in his letter to his parents tonight.
Vanna, Cultist of Miraak
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we might have only known her for one chapter (and I couldn't decide on someone who'd make a good Solis, her quiet Dunmer counterpart), but Alyssa Sutherland as Queen Aslaug from Vikings is definitely my first choice for the headstrong, loyal Vanna. her hair might need to be a bit redder, but she's got the covering of freckles already!
this was fun! now, I tag @bostoniangirl21, @cheeseandstrawberrytartlover, @kiir-do-faal-rahhe, and any of my writer followers who'd like to show off their fics and characters! (no pressure, of course!) 💖
