The card is completely black, but the words are written in an elegant shimmering ink. It is very cold to the touch, and signed with the seal of the Duke of Dalmatia. It simply reads:
What a҉ v̧èŗy ͞e̸nteŕt̛aining tưrn̡ of event͡s. My cond͟olenc̡es.͡ — ̣̳̙̼̟̹͓͎̟̭͈̠̤͍͝Rò̢į̴̵̖͖̘̘̩̣͈̰̞̪͍͈͈ ͏̴͈͓̮͜Ni̩͙̹͎̤͙c̡͓̘̘͖̪̥̮͖̣͖͔͠o̵͓̙̳̘͈̰͍̘l̶̹̗͘a͈̱̤̟̩̻͇͚̖͓̘͓ş̯̮͖͙̕
That idiot! First he wants to make peace and now he is mocking me?! Stupid motherf…
Aglaé: Language, mon amour.
…I’m sorry. I hope the boys didn’t hear it.
Aloys: Daddy wanted to say motherfucker!
Eugène: Daaad, what is a motherfucker?
Aglaé: …see?

Ney and Aglaé, and dancing
A little gem I found in the memoirs of one of Ney’s aide-de-camps, indicating that the characters of the two spouses may have been rather different indeed. This takes place during 1804:
Madame la maréchale received many guests at her house every evening; often these soirées went on very late, and we danced for part of the night. But the general-in-chief, who was not as amused by these parties as we were, rarely failed, when we had spent a night at the ball, to get us on horseback the next day, or rather the same day, at four in the morning, to go and manoeuvre all day... I thought he was putting a bit of malice into it, and that in this way he was seeking to compensate himself for the boredom caused by pleasures that were not really to his taste...
Which I guess is also yet another difference between marshals Ney and Soult: Soult gleefully giving parties for his wife, while Ney punishes his aides for attending the parties given by his... 😁 Those two really never agreed on anything.

'The meannesses [sic] of the public of which you tell me make me almost sorry that we have not already sailed. I prefer to think that that public is a small number of little cliques. The more extensive public--the public in another sense--has honored me with its good will. In the society-public, on the contrary, some persons honor me with their jealousy. But why do they torment my angelic friend? Is that the penalty for her perfection? Or is she to blame if they make trouble for her in order to hurt me in the most painful way? That would show discernment in them, for I admit that nothing in the world could distress me more.'
-- Lafayette to Poix, December 6, 1782. The 'angelic friend' referred to here is Aglaé de Hunolstein, his mistress. Rumors of their affair spread around the time he was returning to America.
