"Teacher Kim can my friends come over into the centre?"
"Sorry bud but they're not part of the centre so I'm not allowed."
.
"Teacher Kim can Fleet have some of the treats?"
"I really wish I could but since they're not part of the centre and Max really doesn't want another incident I can't."
..
"I wish Teacher Kim would let us bring you guys in." grumbled the youngling.
The others groaned in agreement.
"Okay kids time to come in! The suns are too hot now and it's time to eat!"
The children walk begrudgingly towards the centre through the tall orange grass. The suns on this planet were so hot that even the children didn't complain when it was time to go back inside.
The ones part of the youngling centre made their way inside, waving goodbye to their friends who were not.
"..five, seven, aannd ten! Wow small group today." The human turned to head inside with the younglings when they realized something.
"...where are your parents?"
"Ours or Quin's?"
"Everyone's."
"They're in a meeting."
"Where?"
"On the ship." Juno pointed up.
"Do you know how long they'll be gone."
"I don't know. They left in a hurry...I think they forgot us."
"...get in." the human sighed and walked inside.
"REALLY!?" screamed the children.
"Teacher Kim you said that kids who aren't part of the centre can't come in!"
"I know I know and they're not! But I can't just leave three unsupervised kids out in this heat! Now get in, its hot and Quin your face is redder than usual."
...
"You get water, you get water, everybody gets water! Now who's hungry?"
Hands go up.
"So everyone. Alrighty then."
"Why is she letting us have water and food?" whispered Quin.
"I don't know...maybe it's a apex thing?" whispered back Juno. Her little brother simply chugged his third cup of water.
"Not an apex thing," replied Xw. "I think it's a pack thing?"
"Not a pack thing!" shouted Nova. "Most packs only share food with babies and the sick. Its a herd thing."
"Nope." said Marl.
"Herds only share with those who are family or have family status." explained Tarlak.
And on went the conversation. Each child trying to figure out what type of dynamic humans have. Meanwhile their teacher looks on with amusement.
....
"Oh my stars I am SO SORRY! Thank you so much human Kim!! I swear I thought I grabbed them when I brought their bags with me!" stressed the parent hugging her children with two arms while shaking the humans hands with the other two.
"No worries!" she smiled.
"And kids, I'm so sorry! You must be starving!"
"Oh I gave them some food, so they might not be that hungry. Also Judo had lots of water so he may want to use the bathroom first."
"Oh, how much do we owe you?"
"Sorry?"
"How much do we have to give you to replace the food and water they had?"
"Uh nothing?"
"...huh?"
"They were hungry and thirsty and I just did what any other adult-human! Would do...it's a human thing."
"....alright then. Thank you very much human Kim. Come along children."
And thus the younglings and adults learned what dynamic type the humans have. The human type. Which is honestly pretty stupid to the adults because just giving food to unknown children who aren't even their species? Are they trying to go extinct??
#humans are space orcs#humans are space oddities#humans in space#the adventures of kim and max running a space child centre#not allowed to let kids who aren't part of our program inside the portable we use for after school care bc of liability and stuff#but the other day a kid (I know kid + kid is friend with kids in centre) was left at the playground while mom went to the pharmacy and...#i couldn't leave an unsupervised kid in an empty playground! and I guess the mom assumed I would make sure she wouldn't die#cause human decency I guess#or bc the area is real safe#but maam! why didn't you ask me?!?

the difference that offering a child kindness and compassion can make... one of the kiddos was crying the other morning missing her mom. Sobbing crying. and i talked to her and she wasn't able to say very much from crying so hard but confirmed that she knew her mom was going to be back and it was going to be a good day and it was going to be alright but she was just inconsolable. and we did some good breaths together but she just couldn't get her breathing under control. so for like ten minutes i just had her drink some water and gave her a hug and sat with her while she cried until we were going off to the next activity and she had to go with different counselors. and by then she'd calmed down a little but was still sniffling and obviously upset but the important part is that even though i didn't even get her to stop crying anytime i saw that little girl the rest of that day and now throughout the rest of the Week after just sitting with her and offering some compassion i see her notice me as she goes by and she always looks right at me and smiles and gives me a little wave when i say hi. like we haven't had any other conversations since then but i can see the way that she recognizes me now. i'm not her favorite counselor i haven't spent more than twenty minutes with her tops but that little girl takes the time to seek out my acknowledgement cause i showed that i care about her.... y'know... cause i was gentle with her and that meant something to her... all to say. it doesn't matter if you have extended interactions with kids. it really doesn't. small things can make such a huge impact on children and i really sincerely think it's so important to show them kindness... help them up when they fall. give them a hug. sit with them while they cry. cause even if it doesn't Fix things even if you don't solve the problem or do anything really materially Helpful you will have shown that child that people care about them. and they notice... they remember... they do...
#man. mira won't even speak to me really but i can Tell it's significant to her when i say hi and call her by name#crazy... you have such power as a grownup to make an impression in a kid's life....#and in such small ways too. she's probably not going to remember me after a month or two.#but also one of my kiddos who i've known for a couple years now#his first week of summer camp he was just distraught every time he got dropped off. sobbing crying.#little incoming kindergartener and he was in water games camp and did not want to get wet. poor thing.#and i was the person there when he got dropped off that week and i sat with him and comforted him and got him calmer#and that kiddo is like My child at this point haha i adore him and he says all the time that i'm his favorite counselor#but huge point of it... two full years later... he will still tell Other people that i am his favorite counselor 'because i helped him'#when he was first starting camps. makes a specific point to say it. multiple other counselors have told me that he's said that to them.#so like... man... kids remember.... they really do...#ten thousand little reasons for my little guy to enjoy hanging out with me during summer camps/after school programs#but he specifically remembers that i was someone who took the time to care about him... heartwrenching. every time#anyway#valentine notes

The coolest thing about art is that you can just make it. Anyone can make it. All it has to do is be something you feel. Good, bad, Doesn’t matter. Only you can make the thing you’re making. Just do it.
#really and truly it doesnt matter who you are or where you come from#I used to volunteer with schools and do an after school program centered on getting art to kids. but my structured activities were always#about just making art. Not caring what it looks like or if you get dirty or if your friends dont like it. Just make it#I think there's a lot of magic in that and im putting my sincerity in the tags bc maybe others dont car about my personal connection w it#but I think the thing is that everyone has experiences and thus everyone wishes to share them. art is a community. art is power!#that's so cool. You should make things. Pretty things! ugly things! anything you want things!#vpersonal

someday i'll have to just come to terms with the fact that my brain deals with social stuff super weirdly and that the way i form relationships is fundamentally different from how everyone else does (and that this is all probably okay). today is not that day though
#melonposting#after talking to my therapist there is literally no other way to put this:#i'm a robot who must program itself to interact with people like a human. i'm an AI or something#i have to act as if i miss people even though i don't. like ''i'm not a people-misser but i believe in their beliefs''#for the record i genuinely have difficulty missing people/actively desiring their presence.#it's an emotion i feel incredibly rarely even for things/people i really care about & even if we're incredibly spatially/temporally distant#it's weird! and i still love folks i don't miss and i still want to be in their company#but because i don't miss them i'm not compelled to keep in touch the same way as most people#like it just doesn't occur to me. likewise it doesn't occur to me to hang out with folks outside of school#but to maintain a friendship is to keep in touch/hang out to some extent. so i must force myself to act as if i miss people#(i have missed people before. but i only remember 3 instances. and it's been years since the last one!)#in other news... my definition of 'friend' is weirdly broad; i have no real desire to date anyone i have a crush on;#and i only feel genuinely lonely if i choose to think about it#weird! my brain is weird!! autism be darned /silly#sorry for the spiel! thinking about a lot :)

Back when I was majoring in elementary education we had to do these presentations of lesson plans in which people went up and gave a lesson as if the rest of us were the elementary students they were teaching. This one guy's lesson was about the phases of the moon, and he very confidently did his whole lesson... explaining to us that the moon's phases were caused by the shadow of the Earth on the moon. At some point I finally couldn't take it anymore and raised my hand to explain that that's not how the phases of the moon were caused. I forget the presenter's response to this, but good number of people in the class got annoyed with me for "ruining it."
I used to be a grader and an occasional substitute prof for an introductory astronomy lab. That means that the majority of the people in this lab are only taking it because it’s a requirement and about half of them think it’s an astrology class.
I was grading midterms and this one girl. She was so nice and I think she was a business major. Fuck. The question on the midterm was to draw a diagram of the solar system and this poor girl. This fucking girl had drawn a Mars-centric solar system. As in every planet and the sun were orbiting Mars. I now actually have a custom Cards Againsy Humanity card I got at a con that says “A Mars-centric solar system”
I had a boy argue with me that there was liquid water on the moon (this was around when they had found liquid water on Mars in ~2015) and he wouldn’t believe me that he likely meant Mars and not the moon. After I marked his answer to the relevant lab question wrong, he took it to the department head who had promptly laughed him out of the office.
And there was another boy who, during a lab in our observatory where we would look at certain things in the sky, asked where the sun was. At 10pm in November. After some questioning it was revealed that he thought the moon and the sun were the same thing.
#this is the same education program in which we had to take state exams to become teacher certified#the general ed exam was at like a fifth grade level. maybe sixth. I passed first try and didn't think much of it.#I was the only person who passed first try. most people had to take it 3 or 4 times to pass. one girl took it SEVEN TIMES.#AND IT COST MONEY. IT WAS LIKE $100 PER RETAKE OR SOMETHING#that whole program was just... we did a little spelling test once with admittedly higher level words#I was the only one who could spell everything#one time in a children's literature class we did an icebreaker talking about our favorite books#and it quickly became very clear that I was the only one who had read any book at all since high school#you know what though? they're probably all killing it at teaching right now. bc after two months of actually being a 6th grade teacher#I realized that school is no longer about educating. it's about babysitting.#joke's on me I guess because it turned out I couldn't make it as a teacher. I cared about actual education too much#sorry this is all so cynical I just have too many burning thoughts on this matter. i would say 'the education system sucks' but tbh#at this point I can't even blame the system. I'm blaming parents. not all parents of course but hooooo boy way too many of them.#my mom actively invested in and participated in my and my sister's education. so many parents of the kids in the schools I worked in did No#just read to your kids folks pls just read to them and talk to them early on andmake them familiar w/ numbers and letters and the actual ac#of reading and writing. pls I am on my hands and knees. this would solve so many problems#okay end rant. I'm not okay
