it drives me nuts when the abortion law debate comes up regarding the autonomy of women/people to chose whether or not to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

And the bulk of these debates is medical autonomy. The ability for the parent(s) to discuss with their OBGYN regarding the plausibility of continuing a pregnancy, or receive emergency medical intervention, in the event a fetus is non-viable. If the fetus is medically compromise, not forming correctly, has expired during development/processing of passing, has a condition that prevents development, necrotized, or etc.

Discussions that should be had with the closest individuals to the baby, and the medical professionals. Especially in situations wherein pursuit of medical intervention can be chanced and salvage the pregnancy.

Or in the event the parent requires medical intervention which may disrupt the pregnancy, because it is an emergency and the mother could suffer considerably or pass. I heard rumors that this situation is what led to Adrian Smith falling to a stroke, and the subsequent use of her body as an incubator to preserve her fetus - which was deeply fuked up.

But the hang up of 'pro-lifers' is that (check notes) "All life is precious and should be given a chance."

Wherein OBGYN's will write the reports and document the viability of a distressed fetus and the probability if this child may survive post birth/c-sections (some of these high risk births will require c-section because the fetus and overall pregnancy have not transpired text book). And that is the hard edge of the argument, that high-risk or non viable pregnancies result in the inhumane distress and prolonged pain of a fetus that is not viable. "All life is precious and deserves a chance" is heinous rhetoric, when the professionals inform the parent(s) "this pregnancy is not viable for K medical reason. It jeopardizes your life, and the baby if born may live for 2 days, with its [insert major organ] exposed/missing."

And it's wild! These condescending a-holes take away all autonomy, all right, all humanity from the situation that they are not involved with.

Won't donate or volunteer or provide any supportive means to already born children who are here, who are living in foster homes or in orphanage/child care centers. On the other spectrum, if ultrasound it is found the baby has a fully formed skull and brain, heartbeat is strong... but fuck it all, where are the arms and legs? The parents can still have a deep and involved conversation if this pregnancy should be continued. Are the parents financially stable, to where they can make up the medical needs of this complicated pregnancy. Can they provide for a child who will need mobility assistance, in a world that is volatile towards those who require assistance and accessibility?

Because once that infant has exited the womb, all care and concerns for their eventual is gone. The state wants no more involvement with that child, the pro-lifers (lol) are going to blame the parents for everything that goes wrong with the kid - but we all know pro-lifers don't do anything to support, aside from defund meal plans. Back on topic, it's a choice of what to do in such areas where the parents and doctors are involved with the 'choices' around their soon to be child. If or not they should risk a pregnancy if the fetus is compromised, not thriving, or found to have suffered death. The access to medical assistance if the fetus is in distress, or if that pregnancy is endangering a parent, or the miscarriage that resulted was not completed. Where or not the parents themselves feel confident in carrying for a child that requires extensive assistance or medical aid throughout their life- and extensive by definition is that of mechanical support, feeding, tending, protections, advocacy.

If parents doubt the quality of life for themselves or the child is worth pursuing, that the pain their sentiments have will be more damning to their child than beneficial - those parents should have autonomy over the choice of if or not to follow through with a pregnancy.

I was reading information on permie babies because I know a 3 month old premie has the capacity to grow and thrive.

But even at 5 months and 27 weeks (approx.), Chance is a very small premie and that is likely from the cease functions of Adriana as her body began decomposing. Chance grew the most in the first 3 months (1st trimester), but the 2nd trimester is where baby really begins to grow and bulk up into a infant. Life functions and everything formulates in that 20-33 weeks (more or less).

Again, Adriana Smith was pronounced deceased and life functions maintained the base functions of her body to incubate her fetus. I'm quite certain that they would have had a better opportunity of saving her fetus if they removed them early on and placed Chance in a fish aquarium.

That is the only reason they want this child to grow up, no matter if the baby can thrive, or if this child will use the toilet or be able to write poetry. Because we all know all life is precious and should be cherished. Even if we have to glue that child to a stiff board to hold them upright.

A long time ago I insisted that doctors and OBGYNs NEED TO CHANGE the terminology and approach to planned pregnancy.

A lot of focus is placed on the women carrying the child, which indeed should be the top tier focus of these dilemma. But paramount to the arguments for abortion rights and planned parentage, there must be a narrative for the fetus' rights to a dignified end of life - SPECIALLY IN TERMINAL instances where mother and fetus will suffer significantly, may approach death, or WORSE circumstances.

And there will always be circumstances worse that death, termination, and end of life process.

In medicine when I discuss with young doctors their role in the field, I fervently remind them the job is not to save all of the lives that they can. That is the bare minimum given. But the optimal performance is the care, treatment measures, and therapy. The quality of life, the agency of matters concerning death, and dignity in the process.

Strict laws concerning abortion restrictions always come for good mothers, people who WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING to be the parent, to raise the baby and nurture their child. These laws mean nothing to people who do not want children, and frankly, our landfills are filled with more baby skulls than all the cemeteries in the world combined. Because if someone really does not want that child and they give no fucks about the process of shoving out a baby, they have means to disposing of the body. And they do so while the thousands of pro-lifers a frothing at the mouth, are eager and ready to punish the women that suffered a devastating miscarriage.

In cases where a mother is involved with the prenatal care of their baby and doing all in the power available to insure this pregnancy is nurtured and cared for, sometimes that means to make the most difficult decision a struggling mother must make when she is faced with non-viable pregnancy. Termination of a damaged or dying fetus.

Our current legislations on rights to abortions are hinged around "keep alive baby", but does never account for the quality of life. Pro-lifers will shriek, "Abortion is murder!" while they gleefully proclaim saving a fetus that may be in pain or is already suffering, but incapable of dying due to receiving life supporting functions from the mother. The state of georgia still has Adriana alive in order for her body to grow a fetus, and she is only 'alive' in the sense machines are keeping her flesh airyated and her blood filtered of waste. It is possible her body will begin to necrotize and begin decaying if internal infection are missed, if sections of her body begin to fail due to her brain death.

The same can happen to a compromised fetus if it dies in the womb, but the body is incapable of the miscarriage. In some cases, the body cannot be absorbed by the uterus and that remaining corpse becomes what is referred to as the 'stone baby'. The body must calcified this 'foreign' object that, to protect the internal integrity of the body. The remains must be removed via surgical c-section. If not, the mother cannot conceiver another child. The following incident may render her incapable of future procreation.

Show pro-lifers images of failed pregnancies, calcified babies, mutilated babies formed improperly in the womb. All life is precious, even if it is suffering and dying and not understanding why there is hurt and pain. Pro-lifers will always proclaim some hogwash like, "This life had meaning to someone."

WHO?!? You absolute muppet. This dying fetus was meant to serve a higher calling. To justify your moral damning justice for life. Children and adults are meant to suffer when there is life to be lived for. But no infant or baby should be forced to be birthed to serve a grotesque agenda, to say there was meaning in parading a suffering baby around to spike your pathetic life. Infants and babies are not props for a piss narrative, and they are not meant to prescribe meaning to your deranged moral codes. They have every right to a dignified and painless as possible end of life, if they are in terminal stages of death or suffering. And it is an unsteady thread to tamper on the argument of what an fetus might "suffer" in the womb, but abortions are meant to be carried out at the soonest possible need - regardless circumstances. Because of factors of humanity and painless delivery, specially in instances when the fetus is not viable or possibly suffering. AND THESE CIRCUMSTANCES must come down to the doctor, the parent and their support, and whoever else holds weight in that persons life (all decisions that this person must make with doctor counselling). Impartial and guided by the medical documentation.

But right now we have a lot of babies being born to suffer and day for the meaning someone else to derive from their brief presence. And that is all magical levels of fucked up. "I am sorry child, you are suffering and wheezing and no one born with your condition lives longer than two days. We're gonna jab you with all these needles, shove a pipe in your rib cage, put you in a medical coma, stick a drain in your skull, and hook you up to this master computer. And from that, we will show the "murder baby people" how beautiful life is, and you will be important to all of us. We want you to sit in this fish tank so we can gander at the mystery of science, and pray to god how gratified we are that we can have you for this brief time...." and in that time the baby's kidney turned into a rock and melted through their cervix.

But if you are person who wants to put a baby through this whole Frankenstein horror show and hold out hope and offer your infant every opportunity - that ain't any of my business. But it wholly remains up to the parent, their support, and anyone else they need involved. Because that is THEIR PEROGATIVE AND CHOICE. If some parent does not want to endure this pain, watch their kid suffer, or any other reasoning private to them. By all means let them take this matter up with their OBGYN and the doctors specialized for this prenatal care.

"Oh, but someone will want that baby if you don't." WHO THE FUCK?! You don't even want that baby. You can't even handle an autistic child. If you're not spending one week of your miserable life at the hospital holding nicu infants, you have no voice on the matters of 'pro' or 'life'. I am following the case with the Georgia mother who was a nurse and declared brain death, meaning she is not comatose. Her brain has ceased all function.

But she is being held hostage on life support because she was in her first trimester of pregnancy and based on the 'heart-beat' law, she must be kept on machines to maintain her skin and tissue so she's basically a meat incubator for the fetus.

And it's a whole thing for the family, because they are not against the baby being born under these conditions, it's the lack of autonomy for the women's body. The desecration of a corpse.

"Desecration of a corpse" sounds really ugly, but this is a technical term for this situation, since by all accounts the mother is viably dead. She is not comatose, she is not in a form of impenetrable sleep or stasis. Her brain is dead, and nothing is maintaining her bodies health but machines. Machines that pump her skin with nutrients, machines to assist gaseous exchange, machines to pull toxins from her blood, to facilitate the nourishment and production of blood cells.

I do believe that a very early (earlier than would be recommended in such situations) premature caesarean section would be performed, in a last gamble to 'save' this baby if the life was 'endangered'. But it is impossible to really define when or where the baby's life is in danger. But if the baby is born and viable, but suffers debilitating health issues - the pro-lifers will still call this the poster child and 'miracle' baby, and advocate for more of these situations - REGARDLESS if far more failures and stillborn occur following this 'miracle' situation. That will be gruesome with the child's only purpose was to prove some sort of fuked up point, while ignoring that this child has to live and grow, and will likely be forgotten by the advocates that championed for their life. All while the child will fade into obscurity, with health complications they were forced to inherit by the circumstances of their 'incubation'.

Which is on par with pro-lifers. Once the baby is born, all complications and needs are no longer essential. That baby is no longer useful to their needs, hence they move onto their next champion for "all life is precious and should be protected."

Until that life is torn from the womb and discarded to the unforgiving future.
