Chun Mee Green Teas in Mauritania
West Africa is located between the Sahara Desert, Lake Chad and the Gulf of Guinea. West Africa generally includes Mauritania, Western Sahara, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Niger, Nigeria, and Canary Islands, etc., a total of 17 countries and regions.
West Africa is located in or around the Sahara Desert, the largest in the world. Its climate and people's dietary characteristics are similar to those of Morocco and other countries in North Africa. Therefore, most people here also like to drink tea. They are used to adding sugar and mint leaves (or juice) when drinking tea.
Mauritania is located in the west of the Sahara Desert in Africa. More than 90% of the country's territory is desert area. It is a country mainly based on animal husbandry. It is said that the history of tea drinking in Mauritania originated in the 16th century, and was first introduced from Spain.
According to annual statistics from the World Tea Association, Mauritania imported $24.06 million in tea from China in 2021. Mainly medium to high-end chun mee green teas such as 41022, 41022AAA, 8147 and so on.
Drinking green tea is an ingrained habit in the lives of Mauritanians. Due to the dry and hot climate, people are prone to fatigue, and the living habit of eating beef, mutton, and camel milk as staple food has led to uneven nutrition. Tea can help digestion, cheer up the spirit, eliminate fatigue, and supplement vitamins.
In Mauritania, there is also the etiquette of "serving tea when guests come". When knowing that guests are coming to visit, the host will prepare tea in advance. In traditional customs, tea is usually brewed.
Mauritanians like drinking strong sweet tea. In this Islamic country, people start drinking tea after praying every morning. Usually, tea leaves are put into a small porcelain pot or a small copper pot to be boiled and drank. After the tea boils, sugar and fresh mint leaves are added, and then the tea juice is poured into a glass the size of a wine glass and it is ready for drinking. The color of the tea is like coffee, and the tea tastes sweet and mellow, with a refreshing mint flavor. Mauritanians need about 30g of tea leaves once to make tea, and the quality of the tea leaves is required to be strong and moderately flavored, and the color of the soup will remain unchanged after multiple times of brewing. They like tea with a darker color, so if the tea is stored for a longer period of time, it will become more popular. Mauritanians generally drink tea three times a day, three cups each time, and on holidays, they drink tea more than ten times.
Basic etiquette can only be completed after three rounds of tea between host and guest. The first round is a cup of tea soup with a small amount of mint, strong and bitter flavor, followed by a slightly sweet tea soup with more mint flavor, and finally a cup of tea soup with sweet and strong mint flavor. Generally, 3 to 4 sugar cubes are placed in a small cup of tea.
"Three rounds of tea" is a traditional tea drinking custom, but now some Mauritanians are no longer so particular. Drinking tea is basically based on personal needs, and most of them use the method of brewing.
Due to the high temperature and dryness, Mauritania is not suitable for growing tea. So far, it has no self-produced tea and relies entirely on imported tea, most of which is imported from China.

Kenyan tea pickers are destroying machines brought in to replace them during violent protests that highlight the challenge faced by low-skilled workers as more agribusiness companies rely on automation to cut costs. At least 10 tea-plucking machines have been torched in multiple flashpoints in the past year, according to local media reports. Recent demonstrations have left one protester dead and several injured, including 23 police officers and farm workers. The Kenya Tea Growers Association (KTGA) estimated the cost of damaged machinery at $1.2 million (170 million Kenyan shillings) after nine machines belonging to Ekaterra, makers of the top-selling tea brand Lipton, were destroyed in May. In March, a local government taskforce recommended that tea companies in Kericho, the country’s largest tea-growing town, adopt a new 60:40 ratio of mechanized tea harvesting to hand-plucking. The taskforce also wants legislation passed to limit importation of tea harvesting machines. Nicholas Kirui, a member of the taskforce and former CEO of KTGA, told Semafor Africa 30,000 jobs had been lost to mechanization in Kericho county alone over the past decade. "We did public participation in all the wards and with all the different groups, and the overwhelming sentiment we were hearing was that the machines should go," Kirui said. In 2021, Kenya exported tea worth $1.2 billion, making it the third-largest tea exporter globally, behind China and Sri Lanka. Multinationals including Browns Investments, George Williamson and Ekaterra — which was sold by Unilever to a private equity firm in July 2022 — plant on an estimated 200,000 acres in Kericho and have all adopted mechanized harvesting. Some machines can reportedly replace 100 workers. Ekaterra's corporate affairs director in Kenya, Sammy Kirui, told Semafor Africa that mechanization was “critical” to the company’s operations and the global competitiveness of Kenyan tea. As the government taskforce established, one machine can bring the cost of harvesting tea down to 3 cents (4 Kenyan shillings) per kilogram from 11 cents (15.32 shillings) per kilogram with hand-plucking. Analysts partly attribute Kenya's unemployment rate — the highest in East Africa — to automation in industries, including banking and insurance. Some 13.9% of working age Kenyans (over 16) were out of work or long term unemployed in the final quarter of 2022.

African Treasure: The Story of Rooibos Tea
What do you prefer: tea, coffee? Maybe chicory? Wait, we know – rooibos! Did you guess it? Oh, even if not, TimeTea is sure that you will be interested in reading about where and how this amber-red drink comes from.
So, rooibos (or rooibos) is a herbal tea made from the shoots and leaves of a plant called aspalathus linearis. This specimen belongs to the Legume family and is a shrub up to 1.5 meters in height with small, needle-like leaves.
Aspalathus lineara in its natural form grows exclusively in South Africa – 200 km from Cape Town within the boundaries of the Cederberg mountain range. Today, of course, the plant is cultivated on an industrial scale, but still the plantations do not go beyond the Cederberg Valley. And all for the sake of a pleasant-tasting and energizing drink, which at one time replaced tea for local residents, and then for settlers from Europe.
The first to collect leaves and branches of Aspalatus lineara were the indigenous people – the Hottentot people. Only in the 18th century did the Dutch learn about the plant, and then – closer to the 19th century – the British also caught up. The fact of the “discovery” of rooibos for Europeans is attributed to Carl Peter Thunberg, a Swedish naturalist who was in South Africa on behalf of a Dutch company back in the 1700s. The drink was liked by sophisticated society, and at the beginning of the 20th century they began to export it with might and main. Today, the annual production of rooibos is about 12,000 tons, and half of this is exported.
If you are already tired of coffee and tea or need/want to give up caffeine, rooibos is a great option. It quenches thirst well, tones up, is useful for both adults and children, and can also be drunk without sugar. This herbal tea itself contains a sufficient amount of glucose.
Ready! We’ll dry it and sell it. In addition, rooibos contains enough vitamin C, flavonoids, and a number of minerals. In particular, the flavonoid quercetin has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antitumor properties. Some studies show the effectiveness of rooibos against mutagens, CNS damage and free radicals. Although we, of course, recommend that if something happens, contact doctors, and not tea sellers.
Today you can find this herbal tea in any form: loose, in bags, in pure form and with additives. They even make so-called espresso from rooibos. In general, be sure to try it if you haven’t already!

Aight, this is a greatly anticipated one. For breakfast today, I made two beautiful soft-fried eggs on top of a piece of bread, also occupied by six slices of pickles, bacon-mayonayese, and honey-mustard.
To accompany this, I laid on a yummy yummy beef burger pattie only after I took the picture. I also brewed some strong rooibos tea (redbush), which should go unnaturally and suspiciously well with the naartjie (mandarin orange) and the meal as a whole.
