Hey bitches! I was wondering if you think that going into HR is actually a good way to protect workers rights? I'm about to enroll in a business degree at my local community college and tbh I'll probably never be able to afford university. However, I am passionate about workers rights, particularly here in the South as I feel like there's tons of improvements to be made, and I would love to be more involved with the labor rights movement. But I was wondering, if I ever go to university, would getting an HR degree be the right move? I know I could have the potential to help people but I'm worried that, ultimately, my commitment has to be to the company. Is HR just another cog in the corporate machine? Or is it actually possible to make important changes there?

Should You Trust Your Human Resources Department?
The tl;dr is that HR's purpose is to protect the company, not the worker. Very often that means ensuring the company isn't violating labor laws, but it's still in the interest of the employer rather their employees.
That said, a degree in Human Resources could be VERY helpful to your goals of furthering the labor rights movement. For one thing, you could get a job in a company's HR department and work to change that individual company from within. But more importantly, you'll have an intimate understanding of the system and laws so that you can work to change it on a larger scale from without. Union organizing is a literal job you could do. Being the HR expert to law firms that specialize in labor law is a job you could do. Being a consultant helping companies improve their labor relations is a job you can do!
It's a great education and skill set. What you do with it is up to you, but I think that you can do a lot of good. We're on your side, babycakes!

This pride month, I kindly request that you help me (a disabled queer trans guy) get closer to my goal of $6,000 for top surgery. (Yes it has decreased from 10,000 to 6,000. More Info under the cut). Currently the GoFundMe has raised $340/$6,000 of what I need. While I am saving my own money and pouring whatever I can spare into my savings, there's no way I can reasonably save enough on my own to reach my goal of getting top surgery before the end of next year.

Some more nuanced information is below the cut.
My insurance (my state's Medicaid) is required to offer gender affirming surgery and cannot discriminate against myself or anyone else for being trans. Unfortunately the system in which it takes to get approved for coverage is extremely difficult. I wouldn't be able to even qualify until after my birthday next year (you have to be 21 to qualify). And the other steps can be just as tiresome. There's a lot that goes into it, and it's a lot that would be unreasonable for me to get done even if I started now. Not to mention the fact that after reaching out to several doctors in network, only one responded to me (and my phone call with him was anything but kind).
Out of pocket with a plastic surgeon is my best bet, and the safer one too. Currently the ONLY thing preventing me from getting top surgery is my finances, hence the GoFundMe. I found and consulted with a surgeon in my area who is willing to perform the surgery, and a therapist willing to provide a letter stating that basically I'm of sound mind and body to be making this decision.
Truthfully I've needed top surgery since I was 14. Even if I wasn't trans, my breasts cause me significant physical difficulties including mobility and breathing (which, when paired with a physical disability that causes chronic pain makes everything incredibly hard). The dysphoria is a complete other story. I've been binding since 14 too, and considering I'm 20 now, is a pretty long time. Binding for so many years has it's own consequences, especially when you are someone of my size. Needless to say, this is not only medically necessary from a gender affirmation standpoint, but also a quality of life one. It is absolutely a need.
It's also necessary because of my mental health. I made a post a short while ago that admitted to me being... not the best mentally. It wasn't a break down of sorts, but it was an honest reaction to my situation that I needed to get out of my system. The biggest contribution to this not-quite-breakdown is the fact that I can't afford top surgery. That's a hard concept for some people to grasp, that lack of access to this surgery could make me incredibly depressed. So many people still see it as elective or cosmetic. It's a hard feeling to explain, but it is the truth. It's not meant to be a guilt trip or to make you feel pity. It's my reality, and frankly the reality of many other trans people in similar situations.
The estimated cost for the surgery and all its required components is $10,000 (of which my joyfriend has so graciously offered to cover $4,000 of that). That leaves me with needing to cover 6,000 on my own*.
Being physically disabled makes working long hours hard. I get wiped out after a few hours at my normal job, and my summer job at a camp this year is sure to leave me with more exhaustion than normal as my days are significantly longer. (It's sad to say but I am working here mainly for the money, and the super awesome and supportive community I've found is a really awesome bonus. While I anticipate getting more saving money because of the pay increase at this summer position, it's not going to be enough to cover top surgery by itself, and come the end of this position and summer, I'll be back at my original place of work with only a one dollar increase in promotion pay. ($12/hr). I'll likely be making even less money than I normally do because I'm starting school again.
I'm just now realizing how busy my life is going to be after typing all this out...

The point is mainly that if people walk in the shop and buy them, I can make more and if that works they can be permanent. But at the moment online traffic isn’t enough to give me any good analytics. If y’all want specific things, I have to follow the sales from now on. If something doesn’t sell, it has to go. At least, that’s what the CMU graduate who makes $500/hr doing business consulting and giving us artists advice is saying 😅 It’s brutal, but I can’t afford to just make things Willy nilly if I want to actually grow into a self-sustaining business. I would desperately love to be successful, but that often means gearing towards high volume and less personalization.

I know this isn’t the point but it’s important you know your rights. You can file a racial/ethnic/nationality discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and in addition, each state has their own state department for dealing with illegal discrimination. Try googling “[state name] employment discrimination” and it should pop up with the name of the department for your state. Explain that your coworkers discrimination against your ethnicity/nationality/race makes you so afraid it impacts your ability to work, and include the quote in the post above, date, names and witnesses. Please be sure to mention in your complaint that your company does not have HR/an internal complaint process, I have never heard of that for something as big as a medical office. That should raise a lot of alarms.
Also, most employment attorneys obtain their fees from the defendant/company, so it may be worth exploring some consultations with local employment attorneys.

If you start saving at 30 years old and you expect to retire at 65 and use $100k/year until 85 you have to invest $3000/month

If you have good enough credit to get a $42,000 credit card and preferably like $100k credit card you could (if you made it your full time job) make $30 mil/year
Rental properties are priced based on revenue, not property value. This can be exploited both ways
A car payment should not be more than 8% of your income
A house should cost twice your salary but with a 30 year mortgage 4x your salary is affordable
Its almost impossible to sell a house thats 5x the average income in a town. So in a town with “average” income $60k per person a $300k house will need to be on the market for 6 months or more. Most nice/suburban towns have average incomes above $100k.
Banks have just cut mortgages and business loans to 90% of what it was in 2008. So were pretty fucked
You first house (with the first time home buyers program) can have a down payment of 3-5%. Its okay to not do 20%
If you’re poor places with low cost of living are more important than taxes. Virginia have high taxes but at $15/hr it doesn’t matter. you can get cheap rent and food and fuel there.
Buying a home is a scam by the banks

If you live in a place that has slightly above average rent and food costs the living wage is like $18.75 or more
When bond interest rates reverse that means rich people and banks are buying 30 year bonds and not 5 year bonds. This is not financial advice but thats when I am eyeballing those 5 year bonds. Banks are forced to buy bonds when the Federal Reserve “prints” money. They choose 30 year bonds even though they are a terrible investment.
If you are going to buy bonds consult an advisor. There are ways to time the market and times when inflation adjusted bonds aren’t the best so yes you do actually need to talk to someone knowledgable
The best investors are paid commission. They make money when you make money so their interests are aligned with yours
Vending machines, laundromats, and other side hustles are a scam. They are a waste of your precious time. Just work overtime at your job or grow cash crops like Oyster mushrooms
You don’t have enough money to get into real estate or most of those side hustles anyway. Minimum is like $150k cash
Oh and if you do manage to build wealth your children or grandchildren will waste it and be wage slaves again
