GALTx eNews: Welcome To Our 8 New Aussies!

We are thrilled to introduce our latest eight arrivals from Australia! On October 26, Naz and Buddy arrived in New Mexico where they will stay in foster homes until they find their forever homes. Neither of them raced and both will turn three years old later this month. Buddy is an adorable brindle boy and Naz is a sweet black gal.

On Halloween, we welcomed the remaining six hounds in Dallas: Art, Charm, Connor, Sandy, Skylar, and Tyler. Art, Connor, and Tyler are boys and Charm, Sandy, and Skylar are girls. Tyler, who is black, is the oldest, turning six in January. White and brindle Skylar is the youngest. She will turn three in February. All are retired racers, except for three year old Art. We are still working on getting photos together for their bios. Watch a slide show of them all here.

These eight new arrivals will all be adoptable as soon as we get them check-ups, vaccinations, and any other medical care they need and also get to know them a little better in foster homes. You can help with their expenses by making a gift to our Nitsche Medical Fund. Remember we adopt nationwide to experienced adopters who can come pick up their hound. If you've been hoping you could adopt again, please put in your adoption application now so that we can get started working on it. More Aussies are expected in December!

The Rescue Hound met up for a Valentines Themed Walk ❤️ Spreading love and licks everywhere they go, showing off just how GREYT Greyhounds are as Pets! What’s not to love about Greyhounds? 💕

Greyhounds are;

Laid Back and Easy Going; known as the 45km/hr couch potatoes!

Great for households with limited mobility; 2 twenty minute strolls a day and they are happy out!

Relatively low shedders compared to other breeds; lack of oils in the coat make for low odour too!

Not big barkers, though the GSOD is something to be aware of!

Big Dog, Small Space Requirements; Greyhounds restful nature makes them fabulous apartment pets!

Wonderful wardrobe; Due to their delicate skin and low body fat, Greyhounds feel the cold, so dressing them in all manner of colourful coats and cosy pjs is necessary and vibrant!

Foodie Furiends; Greys are known for their foodie nature, enjoying human goodies like puppaccinos, toast, snossidges and more, No fussy hounds here!

Wacky weirdos; Greyhounds are full of quirks, from roaching to docking, roping to chittering, the breed really does have something special about it!

GALTx eNews: Joel Is Going From Rags To Riches

Joel wants a rags to riches story and is ready to find his forever family. Let's help him put his rough start living at a landfill behind him. He is a kind, tenderhearted boy who perks right up for snuggles. Although we estimate him to be around three years old, he still has the quirky spunk of a puppy. He enjoys time in his yard, playing with toys and tennis balls, and zooming. Indeed, his perfect forever home has a yard for him to explore whenever he wants and a tall, secure fence to keep him in.

Joel thoroughly enjoys his Greyhound foster sister. They walk well together and enjoy a little wrestling in the morning. He also seems to get along with the other dogs in the neighborhood. We are not yet sure whether he will be ok with cats or prefer to chase them.

Joel takes a little bit to call a stranger a friend and can come across as shy at first. Don't let that fool you. He enjoys his peace and quiet but is also unfazed by noisy weather, dogs barking, and other noisy environments. Food isn't particularly motivating for him. He doesn't counter surf and is the most gentle treat-taker you’ll ever meet. He much prefers his big fluffy bed over a crate and his foster family finds him trustworthy with his freedom around the house when they are away.

I would so like to have an animal companion. But given the amount of impossible-to-kill houseplants I have easily killed in the last year, and how bad I am at taking care of myself, I probably shouldn’t get a pet. But damn I do really really wish I had a Creature here with me.

Having been on both sides of pet rehoming in my lifetime (not rescuing, I refuse to call it that when the previous owner is doing what is best for their animal) I can safely say that the moral superiority of the "I would never" crowd directly causes animals to die and be neglected. There is already such a huge stigma against rehoming, and good pet owners can end up in dire situations when "rescuers" refuse to help on moral grounds.

It's not even limited to the animal rights crowd. There seems to be no nuance amongst the general populace either. Some rescues/rescuers are so blindly "adopt don't shop" that they will straight up lie about the past and current condition of the animals surrendered to them, in order to fit the narrative that only awful people give up their animals.

Anyway, if your pet no longer has a good quality of life with you, or you cannot guarantee its wellbeing, there is nothing morally wrong with rehoming it to someone with the right lifestyle or resources to keep that pet happy and healthy. Nobody is immune to making mistakes or having bad things happen to them. NOBODY. The least we can do is be kind.
