Exploring Meadows Creek......an interesting drive
Dear Reader: I hear movement in the long grass. Fifty metres away a Western Grey Kangaroo twitches its ears and looks back at me before slowly hopping into the scrub. Western Grey Kangaroo I am exploring Meadows Creek from three roads that intersect the creek from Brookman Rd, which starts at the top of Willunga Hill and terminates at Meadows. The first is Adams Gully Road. Adams Gully Road…

Not Tumblr-related rant
If someone eagerly shares knowledge with you of some obscure topic that they are interested in, what they actually doing is showing you that they trust you enough to be themselves around you. They feel like they are almost giving you something and want to share their cool stuff with you.
Turning around and saying ‘Oh, wow, I can’t wait to forget that fact.’ Even with a smile, is going to shut them down, slap them in the face, and mark you as not safe to be around.
It takes a lot for some people to share themselves with others when it hasn’t ended well in the past. And its not like they haven’t spent the last fifty years listening politely to everyone babble about the popular topics they don’t really care about.
And by the way, the Adelaide Rosella has colouration different from the Crimson Rosella from the eastern states because of a virus. It is actually a Crimson Rosella genetically. There are several of these and you can recognise the Crimson Rosella varieties by their blue cheek feathers.
Nutty

This is just the epitome of Australia I mean Kazin >>
I bet you thought the cockatoo was going to be sulphur-crested, didn't you? GOTCHA. This is the PINK COCKATOO, as I discovered, renamed literally this year because it turns out Major Mitchell was actually a bit of a genocidal dick so naming the most gorgeous of cockatoos after him is a bit... not good... so it's a pink cockatoo now. Anyway. Technically this thing lives in the desert and arid regions but y'know what, just look at it. LOOK at this beautiful creature. It has to live in Kazin. So it does now. All the cockatoos live in Tsyallaes, so of course the sulphur-crested ones are there, too. I was debating which was the most Extra of the cockatoos, the pink or the palm cockatoo, and went with this one. Palm cockatoo is actually from the tropics so it can stay there, so it won't fit with the other three on the page.
Speaking of, next is the ROSELLA. VERY specifically, this one's an Adelaide rosella. I always thought it was its own unique species but, as I once again learned while looking for refs, it's a hybrid of a straight up crimson rosella, which lives in a Victoria kind of direction, and the yellow rosella subspecies, which lives up along the Murray River. Their regions cross at Adelaide, and hence the Adelaide rosella! Therefore, similar thing happens in Kazin, where the crimson one lives down towards the coast and the yellow one up in the mountains near the Llayan border, and their grounds cross in Sirrona.
Next is a bloody CROW which, you'll note from that link, is technically a raven, but literally nobody but ornithologists calls these things ravens. Listen to that sound clip and try and tell me that's not a bloody crow. Whenever I hear crows and ravens in, like, fantasy shows or whatever, they sound fake. THAT is what a crow sounds like. It go 'WEH, WEH, WEEEEEEEH' like it's simultaneously whinging and also mocking you for whinging. Crows live everywhere except, like, deep into the desert. Side note, yes, that's absolutely the bird after which the Adelaide Crows are named. This is because South Australia's nickname is Crow-eaters, in the same way that Queenslanders are Banana-benders, West Australians are Sandgropers and Tasmanians are Inbred.
Finally, the absolutely iconic MAGPIE. They also live everywhere. Tsyllaes magpies are all the silver-backed ones because the others look Wrong since I didn't grow up with them. This is a magpie, all other magpies need not apply. They're also the only bird here with sexual dimrophism, but it's only that the females have a grey back where the males have snowy white, so I wasn't about to draw another magpie for that. Plus these are all real birds so I don't need to. Fun fact about magpies, every mob has its own song! So whenever I find sound clips of magpies online, they never QUITE sound right. Sure, it's a magpie, but they're not my magpies. The mob I grew up with sounds different from the mob living where I am now. My mob now is BIG, like eight birds. I'd always see them on the oval going to do fitness and they'd be grazing on the grass (looking for worms) and I'd go 'one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight ...... nine' cos there was always the one teenager hanging out away from the rest of the mob. I say 'was' because, a couple of years ago, they were all hanging around at the edge of the road with the body of a magpie on the tarmac :( 'One, two, three, four, five, six, seven ...... eight.' So it wasn't the beligerant teenager.
That was a depressing note to end on. Have THIS video of crows rolling down a windscreen covered in snow. They are not Australian crows but you can imagine them doing this :D
Now, because I don't plan on drawing any of the smaller ones because they're hard to see so my guys are likely never going to see them, and they don't know what they are so they're only ever going to describe them as little tweetie birds, have some soundclips of birds of the Adelaide Hills and know this is what I live in and what southern Kazin sounds like:
HONEYEATER which I've used as reference for other birds so the shape won't be unfamiliar here. EASTERN SPINEBILL which love to splash around in the puddles left in the gutters at Mum and Dad's. SILVEREYE which I've NEVER seen but god I know that tweet. GREY SHRIKETHRUSH which I also feel like I've never seen but holy shitballs that SOUND. THAT is the sound of the Adelaide Hills omg. WILLIE WAGTAIL which are from everywhere so not really specifically Hills, but they count. STRIATED PARDALOTE idek what this is but it SOUNDS LIKE THE HILLS.
Also BLACKBIRDS but they're introduced so they don't exist in Kazin. I only put this here because this has more turned into a post about birds of the Adelaide Hills. Introduced or not, it's still a sound of the Hills.

The rosellas don’t often spend much time bebopping around the front yard. The rainbow lorikeets generally scare them off, so its always nice to see them for more than just a quick drink and bath.

New Post has been published on http://malleedesign.com.au/photo-competition-entries-and-winner/
Photo Competition Entries and Winner!
Our photo competition is finished and we’ve been absolutely blown away by all our entries. The submissions represent so many different birds and locations across Australia that we couldn’t resist putting them all in one blog post with the winner! Thank you to everyone who sent photos in to us – they have been the source of much excitement and wonder over the last month and for those who have jumped on the bird photography bandwagon Birdlife has their Australian Photography Competition opening on the 28th May, which is another great opportunity to share beautiful photos of your birds.
The winning shot *drumroll* is of this captivating honeyeater in flight by Robyn Bowman. It’s a Brown Honeyeater taking off from her dish near Gympie, Queensland, with tiny droplets of water exploding around it. The sparkling lights in the garden background and wingbeat of the free flying bird really make this photo something special. We have come back to gaze at it again and again and want to say a big thank you and congratulations Robyn! The Brown Honeyeater is sometimes considered a plain and uninteresting bird, but its quiet, courageous nature shines through here.
We had plenty of other striking and stunning submissions, which are presented below. The first are John Harris’s shots of a White-Headed Pigeon and Striped Marsh Frog using his birdbath in Woombye, QLD. The white of the pigeon stands out like a beacon in front of the lush forest background while the Marsh frog blends almost perfectly with the copper of the dish as it perches on a piece of broken ceramic. Both are great quality images, and it was fantastic to see the range of wildlife coming to visit his dish.
Next are Adele Noble’s female Fairy Wrens, Weebill and a Yellow-faced Honeyeater that love her ground-level dish. The Wrens in the first image seem to be enjoying a group splash, and we often see Fairy Wren females visiting birdbaths together (while the males seem to travel alone and can be very tricky to capture!). It’s nice to see natives growing in her garden, which will encourage more native birds into the area too. The Correa behind the dish is good shelter for the small birds to hide in and there’s a lovely thick carpet of Myoporum establishing to the left hand side.
Brad Decent sent us a photo and video (below) of a what looks like a Swamp Wallaby using a dish on his rural property, something we’ve suspected but never seen happen in a dish before! It’s a stunner, the Wallaby looking up between sips to scan the landscape. We love to see other animals using the birdbaths and camera traps are great for capturing otherwise unseen use waterbowls.
Another photo of a Wallaby came to use from Jo-Anne Pittman in Adelaide Hills, its expression gentle and mesmerising. She also captured a confident Currawong and some Adelaide Rosellas splashing about in her dish that backs onto some beautiful bushland. The Adelaide Rosella are a race of Crimson Rosella, which has several colour variants across its range so it was exciting to see these ones that we’ve never encountered before.
Birdbaths on balconies are often underrated so we were delighted to receive these images from Erica Nathan in Hobart. Her large birdbath, surrounded by pot plants looks lovely in the afternoon light and those Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are not afraid to land on it! Doesn’t the one in flight look like batman?!
Sulphur-crested Cockies are suburban kings that occur in all Australia’s major cities, Kathy Lack on the Gold Coast, QLD, also got some lovely photos of them. She captured some Magpies too (seen below) and has a gorgeous rust-red tree stump that she’s mounted her birdbath on.
From Lesley and Paul Herbet in the lower Blue Mountains we recieved this photo of their Gerygones who visit them often. They hop to and from the Westringia behind the dish in between baths and drinks. It’s another smart placement of a birdbath near the shrubbery of the garden so that birds can flit in between them.
One of the photos we really love is this closeup of a Magpie Lark preening, sent in by Maree Davison in Lake Macquarie. You can even see the fluffy white down it’s pulling out from under the wing as it cleans its feathers after a bath. In her second photo the characteristically inquisitive eye of a Magpie stares up towards the camera (they can recognise different human faces), and in the final shot two wattlebirds perch on the edge of her dish surrounded by natives, the fluffy one (on the left) certainly looks like its been for a swim!
This Magpie-lark in Mark Forth’s photograph is having a paddle. Our dishes are designed so that birds can walk into them from the edge of the dish, which is exactly what his Magpie-Lark is doing.
Hiding behind the spiky leaves of a Xanthorrhoea is a Kookaburra in Michelle McAuslan’s Bondi garden. We love how the dish emerges out of the bracken ferns planted underneath and see that she also gets Magpies and Currawongs visiting as seen in the photos below.
Although not a Mallee Dish, Louise Tucker sent us this photograph of one of our favourite local birds – a Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo. Yellow-tails feed on and are often seen in Banksia trees such as the one behind Lousie’s dish, so it’s not surprising he/she turned up at her birdbath. Small flocks of Yellow-tails often move between flowering trees throughout the day and have beaks that can break into the hard Banksia cones.
Sue Kelly in Federal, NSW, photographed a vibrant party of Rainbow Lorikeets having fun in her copper dish. Up close the little red eyes on these birds almost make them look evil! But they seem to be having a very good time bathing a splashing around. Her final photo is one of a Crested Pigeon taking a deep drink from the water and we love that you can lots of detail of the feathers in her pictures.
And that’s it folks! We hope that you’ll keep sending us photos of what’s visiting your dishes and for those who don’t yet have a Mallee birdbath we’re planning to run another photo competition based on native gardens in the next few months where you’ll have an opportunity to win a dish.
We’ll keep you posted,
The Mallee team 🙂

(😭 I missed doing things like this) thanks @bluesuedeclogs for tagging me to post my lock screen, home screen, last song listened to, and last pic saved.
(If anyone is curious abt the pic, its of an Adelaide rosella 😊)
I don't remember the last song I listed to on my phone.. probably Roses (Imanbek Remix) by Saint Jhn. The actual last song I listened to was Mi Morena Rebelde by Eusebio y Su Banjo, which my bf played in the car last night. 😘

Photo
Went for a walk in the Adelaide foothills.
Eastern Spinebill
Sundew (carnivorous plant)
Adelaide Rosella (from a long distance, so full zoom and shitty photo)
Grey Currawong
Adelaide from said foothills (and poorly lit because the sun is almost behind it)
Also there were lots of tiny birds that I desperately tried to photograph, but they were evil and wouldn’t let me.
