I feel like Arnold would be open to any genre but he’s partial to sci fi, fantasy and definitely crime fiction too.
Afton sounds like my dad fr. I think he’d read a lot of non fiction books about science or philosophy. Idk if documentaries existed in the 1950s but Afton would watch that.
I just think Raftellyn would be into painting. Idk why I just feel like she does that during her free time.
I know Angus might be from the mafia but your description of him sounds like he’s secretly a cryptid in the woods. But on another note, I think he’d be into action/drama/crime movies.
Other than cooking, I think Nacha learns how to knit from Margarette of course. She’s also the type to enjoy soap operas imo.
The Rudboys would be into target practice. They’re probably into weapon craftsmanship too. I don’t know if motorcycles are invented during this time period but Steven would love driving on a motorbike. And surfing.
Poor Francis! I wanna let him try out a new hobby! His life is so difficult he doesn’t know what he enjoys! 🥺 I want him to find a hobby he likes!
As for Anastacha, I think she’d be the tomboyish type. She’s not fond of ‘girly’ interests or whatever. I’m not sure what kind of stuff boys are into during the 1950s though.
Robertsky would try baking too. To make peach flavoured desserts. Albertsky on the other hand would be into woodworking/wood carving I think.
Yup! Arnold is very open with any kinds of genre so long as its well-written (as a writer he still has a critical eye when it comes to literature)
I'm not sure either but if they do then yeah Afton would love that. I'm imagining him watching those while rambling to Mia
Thats a very cute hc!
'cryptid in the woods' HELP sorry angus 😭.
AHHH I LOVE YOUR HC FOR THE RUDBOYS. Biker!Steven is real
Francis just doesn't really have an interest he leans into much compared to most residents lmao. Could be because he never had the time for it or could just be natural
I imagine Anastacha to lean more into 'alt' look/behavior like punk or goth than a tomboy but thats cool too! Thats very cute too cuz then we get very contrasting interest with her and Nacha who does 'girly' stuff like sewing and baking. Anas is probably the rough sporty type
I really like that hc for the Peachman bros. Albertsky being into woodwork makes so much sense

A Guide to Fanfiction Tropes and Genres:
🟪I made this cuz honestly, why not lol. For people who are beginners to the fanfiction universe. For anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what this world is like and the common themes used in this "off-the-wall piece of literature". Could be for research purposes or for curiosity, or maybe you want to start writing stuff but not sure what things you might use. No matter who is reading this, I hope this guide helps you.
--I also made this for myself, as a lil handbook to look at while categorizing the fanfics i collect in my blog.
🟦There are genres/topes/themes which you won't be seeing much or any at all particularly in my blog; but I wanted to add them to the lists anyways because they are widely used in fanfiction. I tried to include the main, most common things used in fanfics. Because in reality, the possibilities in a fanfic are endless.
--Many of these are self explanatory so I didn't add extra info to most of them.
This may be used by other fandoms as well. Since this is a Jungkook based account, he is used for some of the examples. You can replace him with anyone you wish to write/read about.
🟥I added most things myself from the knowledge accumulated through my years of experience in fanfiction consumption. For the things I thought I might have missed, I used multiple websites and a reddit post as a referance, which I will credit their links at the very end.
🟫Shoutout to chatgpt for alphabetizing my lists in the end. It would take me ages to edit this
🟩 If you think there is anything I missed, feel free to contact me, I can always edit this post to add new things.
PS: I chose to omit much of the specificities of explicit content (such as specific kinks). I tried to keep things a bit chill. Most likely the authors will include the details of the explicit events in their explanation section. You will know what they are when you see them.

Author Spotlight: Louisa Vidal
Starting out November strong with a guest post from Louisa Vidal, author of club read Trash Planet Confidential! Read on to see why Vidal appreciates genre fiction.
Tumblr media
The Joys of Getting Goofy with Genre
Genre fiction can be easily dismissed by those immune to its charms. But any fan knows that it’s often a method used to examine the biggest issues in the world and find a fresh angle on them. Science fiction itself has an impossibly rich canon of visionaries like Octavia Butler, Ursula K. le Guin, Anna Kavan, and Nicola Griffith, here to shock, educate, and inspire us. It can also be an excuse for intense silliness: make pretty girls green, stick a rubber mask on a dog and make it an alien, go for a joy ride in an asteroid shower.
When I got the prompt from Space Fruit Press that their 2023 queer romance anthology was going to be sci-fi themed, I’d like to tell you I immediately sprung into researching astrophysics and extra-terrestrial biology. Being well-read in the sciences is hot, right? But while I don’t mind a dilly-dally with quantum theory now and then, I knew what I really wanted to write about: Space Lawyers.
In the Venn diagram of my love of science fiction and legal dramas, the overlap is the procedural stuff. This is the backbone of Star Trek - the detail of people just doing their jobs, or trying to, while their colleagues drive them crazy by letting tribbles on board or ripping open a portal into another dimension. This is not a million light years away from the crime TV and film (I’m old enough to have lived through the John Grisham adaptation era), where the storyline may have involved murder, corruption, or the Mafia, - the core of the action is also workplace drama.
For my story, Trash Planet Confidential, I made a stack of my favourite legal eagle tropes - class differences, enemies joining together for a noble cause, archive-digging - then stuck them on a rocket and propelled them into outer space. The world-building came easy once I knew I was writing about main characters from very different socio-economic backgrounds,  who were also both ambitious lawyers; that one of them was also bright green was a pleasing aesthetic addition, and making her politically powerful was a reclamation of the Sexy Green Alien Space Slave cliché.
As a reader of queer romance, I glory in the subversive power of a happy ending. In science fiction, the world the creator shapes is only lightly bound by the laws of physics, and in the fantasy of legal dramas, lawyers can fight on the side of good and win. For all that quantum physics can provide solace, so too can lesbian sex scenes. Having the freedom to have fun is a part of romance that queer women and femmes deserve, too.

Comic Log: Sex Criminals
I am going to go apeshit.
Tumblr media
Sex Criminals is a romantic-comedy-drama with elements of science-fantasy and crime fiction. It is somewhat notable for very frank discussions and portrayals of sexuality, kink, fetishism, mental health, repression, and intimacy, by which I mean the characters recite Instagram infographics at each other, and there's a lot of drawings of dicks and pussies and butts. It is written by Matt Fraction (who I think is a pretty interesting character and humor writer with some great high concepts) and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky (who, to his credit, puts a lot of silly or amusing background gags and makes some compelling panels and sequences).
Tumblr media
The premise is that a woman, Suzie, and a man, Jon, both of whom have been affected by a series of everyday traumas (a parent dying in an outlandish way, the conga line of humiliations that is adolescence, the terror of being a subject), also both have the ability to freeze time when they orgasm. When the two meet, fuck, and realize they share this ability, the two decide to rob the bank Jon works for in order to save Suzie's library from foreclosure. Unfortunately, they find they are not the only ones who can enter "The Quiet"/"Cumworld" - encountering a self-appointed Sex Police - and what ensues is a somewhat meandering story of 1) how Suzie and Jon get together, break up, get back together, and break up again, and 2) how the duo will get out from under the thumb of the weirdos that are monitoring their sex lives.
This is, I think, a pretty interesting concept! But Sex Criminals bears all the hallmarks of a serialization that got beyond the creators' control, drifting away from its initial ideas but never securing a new footing. What I mean by this is that the series is an entirely different beast at the start than it is at the end, and trying to trace its development from issue #1 to issue #69 (ha) is maddening. Broken into six five-issue arcs:
The first arc centers on the initial bank-robbery, told in a non-linear style, and emotionally focuses on the whirlwind romance and chemistry between Suze and Jon.
The second and third arcs are about exiting the honeymoon phase, as the pair initially try to get out of the situation altogether, but get drawn back into further investigation after some tit-for-tat with the antagonists, and discover more people who also have sex-related powers (I would explain more but literally none of it ends up mattering). We get more focus on the supporting cast.
The fourth arc is a crash and burn as things start coming apart and the relationship implodes, at the same time that new stakes are established on the "crime-action" side of the story. Also some of the supporting cast just drops out of the narrative.
I think it's the fifth and sixth arcs where things totally go awry - after Jon and Suzie's breakup, we have a lot of wheel-spinning issues focused on supporting characters that don't go anywhere, we have a new central antagonist who is retroactively tied into the beginning of the series in a clumsy way, we get a couple of unjustified face turns for the initial antagonists (the character of Myrtle is totally malevolent - using slut-shaming to get someone fired, destroying a building out of spite, etc. - and never at any point does anything actually redemptive, she just arbitrarily gets reassigned to Team Good Guy). The series keeps gesturing as though it's building towards a grand confrontation, but...
Eventually Jon and Suzie get back together, and the timeline-muckery and criminal conspiracy side of the plot resolves without the involvement or choices of any of the characters. Basically the evil gay sadist banker has been pulling a bunch of financial crime so he can harvest Orgone energy in order to "change the past" because he had a premonition of Suzie, who he thinks is God, telling him to do so. Suzie stops him, becomes one with The Quiet, then is drawn back into reality by her love (?) for Jon. Then Jon and Suzie break up anyway offscreen before the epilogue.
In one of Fraction's letters sections he says that at a certain point, he lost interest in the whole "criminals" angle and was more interested in exploring the relationship between Jon and Suzie. That's fine, it's the core of the work, and indeed it is what makes the story compelling. But that disinterest in one half of the titular premise makes the ongoing conspiracy-crime-time-stopping side of the story feel like it's sandbagging everything else. Essentially, too many ideas got introduced in those first four arcs that eventually became superfluous to the story Fraction wanted to tell - but he couldn't get rid of them altogether because they were load-bearing (ha) elements. So we end up with a finale issue focused on two characters getting married when they have not done a single thing of import in the series besides hit Jon in the face with a dildo.
Tumblr media
Ultimately I think what frustrates me so much about Sex Criminals is that it has some good characters, and the plot goes interesting directions, and it has some striking visual metaphors and imagery, but it never lets the three combine in a way that really bears solid narrative or thematic fruit. Almost nothing that happens in the last ten issues (before epilogue issue 69) actually matters: most of it doesn't advance the plot, and most of it also doesn't develop the characters. The epilogue is particularly odious because it has Suzie - *the* main character - come out of it looking distinctly like not a character, and more like just a thing that Jon experienced in his journey to be less of a fuck-up.
Also, it must be said:
1) after a whole lot of tedious paeans to sex positivity, the final villain is like a homophobic stereotype of a Bateman-esque sadist who gets off on inflicting cruelty through a combination of BDSM and emotional abuse. weird!
2) Jon is primarily characterized as having "issues with authority" (and is explicitly identified as having oppositional defiance disorder, which is...a choice), and the ultimate resolution to his story is for him to go to jail so he can straighten out his act. weird!
I highlight these not to say the work is "problematic" but rather to illustrate that I do not think Fraction really thought through the implications of his work, because these kinds of closing thematic gestures are in extreme tension with the rest of the work.

So they seem to lump Xena in with the sci-fi category.
I wouldn’t call it sci-fi, nor supernatural to be honest.
It’s definitely fantasy and action-adventure but it doesn’t really have sci-fi or supernatural elements to it aside from maybe one or two episodes. It has a fair bit of horror but that’s only because Sam Raimi produces it. It’s a genre show, yes, but that covers a wide range. That can be anything from like a detective/crime/investigation/spy show like X Files or CSI (both are sci-fi dramas) to something like Sliders and Star Trek which are definitely science fiction as they deal with time-travel and inter-dimensions and alt-realities but from a purely technological and philosophical lens.
Xena/Hercules are shows all about ancient mythology (I’d say “Greek” mythology but Xena was all over the map. She went to China and Japan and even India. I would honestly laugh my ass off seeing a layout for it).
They’re Percy Jackson before Percy Jackson existed.
Still a genre show. Still fantasy. But certainly have very little to do with supernatural or science fiction genres. Maybe with Hercules you could get away with that definition. But Xena - Xena is more gods, warlords and kings. Every now and again it deals with otherworldly monsters but otherwise - it’s human conflict/drama.
I’d peg Xena as a fantasy/action-adventure show primarily. I wouldn’t necessarily refer to it as a drama or comedy as it does both and it does well at doing both. I mean back when Xena was airing, it was very normal and common for genres shows to do drama AND comedy simultaneously. To do half-an-half.
Buffy isn’t a straight up drama all the time.
Neither is Charmed.
Neither is Wynonna Earp.
That’s what makes them so damn enjoyable to watch.
I mean I haven’t seen the entirety of it but I’m pretty sure X Files is like this as well because it’s also a genre show. A lot of TV shows back then were genre shows - which meant that what you got was a mixed goody bag of stuff - it was never really just one thing only.

He gained praise for playing a hustler in the independent drama My Own Private Idaho (1991) and established himself as an action hero with leading roles in Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994). Following several box-office disappointments, Reeves's performance in the horror film The Devil's Advocate (1997) was well received. Greater stardom came with his role as Neo in The Matrix (1999); Reeves became the highest paid actor for a single production for reprising the role in its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003).
He played John Constantine in Constantine (2005) and starred in the romantic drama The Lake House (2006), the science fiction thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still and the crime thriller Street Kings (both 2008). He made his feature-film directorial debut with Man of Tai Chi (2013). Following another commercially down period, Reeves made a career comeback by playing the titular assassin in the action John Wick film series (2014–present). He voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 (2019) and Johnny Silverhand in the video game Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) as well as its expansion. He also reprised his roles of Ted in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) and Neo in The Matrix: Resurrections (2021). Reeves reunited and toured with his band Dogstar in support of their first album in over two decades, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees (2023).
In addition to his career as an actor and musician, Reeves is the co-writer and creator of the BRZRKR franchise, which started with the original comic book (2021–2023) and since expanded to include numerous spin-offs, including the BRZRKR spin-off The Book of Elsewhere with China Miéville. An avid motorcyclist, Reeves is the co-founder of the custom manufacturer ARCH Motorcycle, and is a co-founder of the production company Company Films with his associate Stephen Hamel.
