Leaving it up to Tumblr to choose my next comic chronology in like... 2 months when I'm free of green lantern (2 months is not very generous I fear)
Reasoning under the cut :3 (very long)
Duke- pretty short (less than 200 issues), I really like his character from what I've seen of him. I think it will also be hell (as is the nature of most batman adjacent chronologies) but it'll be worth it... Nice and short one and also swag character
Jefferson- 1. Black lightning is very fun early on and 2. I've already made the spreadsheet so I just have to read it. He's just like... A very cool character and I like him a lot so far. I just am gods scaredest soldier with long chronos (which his isn't too bad but it's ALSO batman adjacent and those are so scary)
Barbara - my best friend Babs but also if I have to reread the killing joke I AM killing Alan Moore ok. In theory I love her SOOOO much. In practice I think the fact I'm having to keep a "how bad is the disability rep" counter next to each issue says a lot. Unfortunately. Also already made this spreadsheet but I think it would be a very bad and good time.
Clint- again in theory would be fun. He seems right up my alley but alas if I have to see Tony Stark I do fly into a blind rage. And unfortunately I think he appears a lot... And also unfortunately I think I would suffer due to blonde man disorder ok (as I always do)
Silhouette+Aaron- package deal bc they're siblings. I've already started this one and then stopped because whoever is writing the early stuff SHOULD go to hell for what they're doing. For those unfamiliar, silhouette is one of the only heroes I've ever seen using forearm crutches (pretty awesome) and her power is that she can kind of travel via shadow iirc? Which would be really cool if they didn't like... Make her lose all her clothes and mobility aids when she's doing this. Which is why I quit. But she's very very cool minus that (and in my mind... I know she's written better later on) and her brother is his own can of worms (in... Definitely a way). In theory tho I rly gotta get through their stuff
Theodore - first off: I am a FIEND for marvel 70s horror comics. Second off: he is better than swamp thing. Third off: his big red eyes. But to be serious though like .. the Steve Gerber and Gerry Conway era of man thing is SO good and like .. political in an interesting way. I just need motivation to get around to it. Also he's cutesy ok!!!
Jason Blood- another consequence of the 70s horror era fan but this guy has CRAZY lore. He's a medieval knight who got possessed by a demon thanks to Merlin and then he's just lived through the centuries and become an occult guy. Reasons why I stopped this one - sometimes old horror comics are bad and horrible. And also a like 60 issue Garth Ennis written series. But I do really wanna finish his stuff bc he's like .. DC's version of Hellstrom (which. Genuinely awesome character, if you're interested in older horror comics def check his original run out <- my plug for my silly husband hellstrom who sucks so much or whatever. He's rly good tho seriously)
Jennifer - I've already made her spreadsheet and started it but the writers are soooo fucking bad most of the time. It's actually horrific. Pros for her- pretty good character when written well (her hellcat series stuff was REALLY nice for me. But I'll always hype up patsy walker aka hellcat at any chance) cons for her- the misogyny ... And my reward for finishing it is watching the she hulk show. So take that as you will
Dracula- I started his stuff bc I was PROMISED Gerry Conway (who is like.. one of my top 5 writers. He does amazing old horror comics and made a bunch of very cool characters). And then he left like 2 issues in and it went downhill. Some of the same authors who did some of the good (other marvel vampire who is redacted for my own safety ok) issues did stuff for drac. In theory this would be silly campy 70s horror comics fun. In practice oh my god I am gaining new authors to hate so bad...
#twist rambles#comics posting#<- my tag for well... posting comics... bc i need one lol#me outting my scary comic taste...#sorry this is so long... if anyone reads my reasoning im so sorry bc thats like... 20 years long#sorry my tbr list is so long and scaryyyyy

THREE TRIOS AT MEZZROW’S LIVE* AND ARCHIVED, 23-26 AUGUST 2023
DAVID HAZELTINE with David Happy Williams and Billy Drummond, 11 AUGUST 2023, 9 pm
*AARON GOLDBERG with Philip Dizack and Matt Penman, 25 AUGUST 2023, 9 pm
GREG MURPHY with Obasi Akoto and Steve Johns, 10 AUGUST 2023, midnight set
I will claim that I am back in the streaming/writing souvenirs habit with these shows and this comment. There were ample reasons to select these shows but they were not old familiars—Miki Yamanaka, George Cables, Alan Broadbent, and Ari Hoenig. So, I got to stretch my ears.
I’m pretty sure DAVID HAZELTINE was the pianist for a David Happy Williams gig that honored Cedar Walton. That pianist nicely captured Walton’s left hand figures which Hazeltine just didn’t quite have. He soloed well but the bass chords/arpeggios that mark Walton and that he had when he stated the themes faded. Williams danced, literally and with his instrument and Billy Drummond had his deft cymbal work going on, but Hazeltine didn’t quite assert himself sufficiently. It was a fine set and these are all pros, but, despite a fine set including a Horace Silver blues and a fetching Lover Man, it didn’t quite grab me.
It was only as I awaited the stream that I realized that Philip Dizack plays trumpet and not drums. So AARON GOLDBERG’s was a different trio. Dizack isn’t Jeremy Pelt who is a master of this ensemble, but, like Pelt and Giveton Gelin who used to duet with Sean Mason, he was an appealing restrained tone well suited to exploring a nifty selection of tunes. Miles Davis’ Dr Jekyll had quick, intricate unison lines and a little fire. Wayne Shorter’s The Big Push and especially Joe Henderson’s Recorda Me were rich, deliberate, and still exploratory. They also did a Cuban song by Martin Rojas that had the flavor of Miguel Zenon’s bolero and Latin American songs duo projects with Luis Perdomo which are distinctively Latin and certainly rhythmic but without percussion. Well, except for Matt Penman’s lush bass that was, on the Rojas, a big guitar. He was an important touch point all night long.
Obasi Akoto was an even bigger presence with GREG MURPHY. I’d seen him on his on gig and figured, though I didn’t know Murphy, this would be a rhythmic, swinging gig. It was, though, teetering on and sometimes going over the edge of being too much. He cooked though and he, Williams, and Penman were crucial to all three sets. Steve Johns was solid but not spectacular and it is probably true that that’s what Murphy was too. But he was bigger than Hazeltine and could hold his own. I recognized Sam Rivers’ Beatrice which was its beautiful self. I’m betting the following tune was probably Nardis, maybe Solar, but part of that Miles/Bill Evans lineage. It was, like the Goldberg/Dizack Dr Jekyll, energetic. Nice set, all around solid and Akoto is a force.
It has helped to have this habit Re established as I adjust, this past week, to the old rhthym of the school year as I then establish a new rhythm on its/my own terms and not that of the 40 hours a week office. That probably means more music.

Escaping into beauty,
A sweet stroll with lily
. . . . Lily-of-the-valley;
Absolute purity of youth.
Flowering bells of happiness
Awaken me from dormancy,
My annual winterization;
Subzero nights set to candlelight.
Hope in a frost-covered window
Constellations to guide each night,
Promise of gold with every rainbow;
Hold me - until spring shines bright.
○○○○○○○○○
The peck of snow upon the glass;
The fire’s glow on candles brass.
In warmings more akin to life,
I’ve cut the very chords of strife;
To dwell on days of purest sun,
The taste of youth upon my tongue.
For time has been a crimson gift,
Her breath has set my soul adrift
And I have feasted like a king
On every morsel love could bring.
Though empty now, my cupboard bare,
I meet the gaze of Winter’s stare
And choose to dream of sultry nights,
Of midnight sands and such delights.
If ever man could dare to ask,
Her essence dripping from a flask,
It is I who walked adventure’s path
And left my on the grass.

Faded footprints upon the beach,
Long days of summer not far from reach,
Carnival rides beneath starlight skies;
We held our breath, we rode up so high.
Love in blossom, passion in full bloom,
We danced the world, we played in tune,
Two wildflowers running up that hill;
Every single kiss - still a tingling thrill.
All of my life, my every returning season,
Living for loving you is my biggest reason,
You're who makes me feel so alive;
Your love is my every understanding why . . . .

This is our 7th collaboration since our debut Blood Love (#1) in early September 2022. We've had the biggest gaps in contributing to this one based on both of us having hectic schedules. Nonetheless, I'm really pleased with Instincts (#7), and the storytelling within and between our metaphorical lines. Thanks again, Aaron, for a fun run on this one!!
Enjoy - Chris

Black History Month Character of the Day: Silhouette Chord
Silhouette (whose name is a translation of a Cambodian name) and Aaron Chord grew up in an orphanage in Chinatown unaware of being from a line of descendants of an interdimensional being. A weird as cult coerced their mother, a Cambodian woman named Miyami, and an African-American soldier named Andrew Chord to make them - Andrew was not aware of their birth and their mother faked their deaths to get them away from the cult. As teenagers the siblings started using their powers - shadow-manipulation for her and enhanced physical abilities for him - to aid one of the local gangs against another, more ruthless one but would later leave to become vigilantes, taking codenames Silhouette and Midnight Fire. They quickly started working with another new vigilante on the block, Dwayne Taylor alias Night Trasher and working with New Warriors. Majority of her appearances are in Night Trasher #1-15 and New Warriors #2-3, #7-10, #14-29, #34-51
One of their missions lead to Silhouette being shot in the spine and losing her ability to walk, but she continued being a vigilante using crutches. However, Aaron blamed Dwayne for her state and turned to crime so he could lure him into a trap posing as a drug kingpin. This stranded relationship between brother and sister. In time Silhouette and Dwayne fell in love but his single-minded obsession with crimefighting eventually drove her away and into arms of his brother Daniell and two of them left.
Her later appearances also tie to New Warriors. She showed up in issues #7-8 of post-Civil War incarnation, confronting Daniell, who blamed himself for Dwayne’s death and became new Night Trasher. She joined Marvel Now incarnation of the team in issues #7-12 and will be in next moth’s return of the team. Outside of that one of her major appearances was in Ironheart #9-12 where she aids Riri Williams against Ten Rings, a terrorist organization that managed to recruit her brother.

Obscure Marvel fancast of the day: Asianna Scott as Roubpheap Sramol Chord aka Silhouette! Silhouette’s father Andrew Chord was a soldier in the Vietnam War whose recon patrol stumbled upon a strange temple in the Cambodian jungle. The leader of the cult there, an elderly sorceress named Tai, bade them to take the women there as their brides, with whom they would have super-powered offspring and fulfill a prophecy. Andrew Chord obeyed and married Miyami, Tai’s daughter, and brought her back to the US with him. She had twins, Roubpheap Sramol and Aaron. However, she knew that her mother would want to get her hands on the twins for her own dastardly purposes, so without telling Andrew, she faked her own death and that of the children, then abandoned them to be raised by a family in Chinatown while she went into hiding. The children developed strange powers, as prophesized. Roubpheap Sramol had the ability to manipulate shadow and teleport through it, from which she took her codename Silhouette, often called Sil for short, which is also the translation of her Khmer given name. Aaron, meanwhile, possessed enhanced strength, speed, senses, and reflexes, and began to call himself Midnight’s Fire. Together, they survived on the streets, and when they got older, they worked together to make those streets safe for others by infiltrating gangs and bringing them down from the inside. It was during one of these undercover operations that the twins met Dwayne Taylor, and he began helping them, as well as beginning a romance with Sil. But during a sting gone wrong, Sil was shot by a police officer and paralyzed from the waist down. Later, after Dwayne had become the superhero Night Thrasher and joined The New Warriors, Silhouette joined as well. Midnight’s Fire, on the other hand, blamed Dwayne for his sister’s injuries and became his enemy, and began to lead the gangs that he had once fought so hard against. Silhouette’s adventures with The New Warriors lead her to discovering the secrets of her past, her family, and the source of her strange Darkforce powers, as well as back into a romance with Dwayne...and out of it when his obsession with crime-fighting overpowered everything else, including their relationship. She found solace in the arms of his half-brother, Bandit, aka Donyell Taylor. Silhouette is a brave, independent young woman. She values personal growth, even when it’s hard, and has a strong spiritual side, as evident when the being known as the Goddess picked her as an acolyte in one story. She’s seldom been given a chance to shine as brightly as the other New Warriors, and her place in the story is often simply as the girlfriend of one of the Taylor brothers, but she’s got a strong personality, moral compass, and intriguing history all her own that should definitely be made more use of! Plus she fights crime on crutches, how cool is that?!

#Day20 of #29daysofblackheroesandvillians we bring you all the mentor of #NightTrasher , #AndrewChord . Andrew Chord was an American soldier, an army sergeant during the Vietnam war. His unit (calling themselves the "Half Fulls") was in the plateau dus bolovens north of the Se Kong river in Cambodia where they were looking to scout locations for a possible landing base for American aircraft. His unit of six soldiers (including Night Thrasher's father Daryl Taylor, Diego Cassaes a.k.a. the Left Hand and the fathers of the members of the Folding Circle) encountered a mysterious building known as the Temple of the Dragon's Breadth. They soon encountered a seemingly English speaking Cambodian geriatric named Tai who restrained them via magic. Tai explained to the soldiers the history of her people and the need for the soldiers to mate with six young women from her cult. The soldiers were led to believe that through these matings their children would one day rule the world. Five of the soldiers agreed to this pact. Daryl Taylor refused his bride because he was already married to his wife Melody. Chord was married off to Tai's only daughter Miyami and brought his new bride home with him to America. Miyami soon gave birth to their two biracial children, Silhouette and Aaron (Midnight's Fire). Miyami did not want her children to be used as Tai's pawns so she faked their deaths and her own in a car crash. Miyami left her children to be raised in Manhattan's Chinatown and departed for parts unknown. #comicsandconvo #29daysofblackheroesandvillians #28daysofblackheroesandvillians #28daysofblackcomiccharacters #29daysofblackcomiccharacters #blackhistorymonth #dccomics #AndrewChord https://www.instagram.com/p/B81yUmtF3iW/?igshid=c4eic05reugw
