Hi ! prompt idea : What if Zuko was armed during the first episode and was stranded with the water tribe while the avatar left with Katara and Sokka, Iroh on his trail for white lotus reasons.
Oh we are going to have us some FUN with "stranded with the water tribe", say no more.
---
Zuko was dripping, and steaming, and staring down two dozen women and their gaggle of small children, plus that old not-the-Avatar crone from earlier. They were all cowering away from him. Which was--
Good. It was good. If they were cowering, then they hadn’t noticed how steam was not flames. He wasn’t sure he could make flames, not after the arctic water he’d landed in, with that last sight of the Avatar glowing; not after surfacing under the ice pack, after swimming, after kicking slamming breaking through and his ship was gone and there was only ocean all around and
and he’d made it back to this pathetic little camp of the Southern Water Tribe, because that was the only place he knew for sure would have shelter, and he wasn’t going to die just because they were all staring at him, even if felt like he would.
Even if the old not-the-Avatar woman could probably take him, right now. But she didn’t know that.
Zuko pulled himself up, taller than her by at least a few inches, and blew steam from his nose.
“I am commandeering one of your huts,” he said. And added, because Uncle said even a prince should be gracious: “You may choose which one.”
---
She choose her own.
...The only one without children that flames might scar, or younger women to catch a soldier’s interests.
Zuko sat by her fire and determinedly started struggling out of his wet clothes and she was still in here with him--
Zuko pulled one of her animal pelts over himself, and finished fighting off his clothes. When he stuck his head back out, cheeks still reddened from what was obviously the cold, she dropped a parka on his head.
“Dry clothes, Your Highness,” she said.
The parka was much bigger than he was. He fell asleep hoping that the camp’s men were on a long, long hunting trip.
---
He woke up again. Kanna tucked her favorite ulu knife away, newly sharpened, and stopped contemplating the alternative.
---
“I am commandeering a ship,” he said.
The crone led him across the village, all twenty paces of it, to a row of canoes.
“Take whichever one you want,” she said. “Will you need help getting it to the water?”
Zuko looked at the canoes. Looked at the ocean. Watched a leopard seal, easily the size of the largest canoe, dozing just past the ice his own ship had broken through the day before. It was frozen again, a great icy arrow pointing from the waves to the village, snow already starting to cover it over.
Beyond was blue sky and gray ocean and white ice, floating in blocks like stepping stones, like boulders, like cliffsides.
There wasn’t even a hint of gray steel, or smoke. Or any land, besides what they were standing on.
He looked down at the canoes again. Somehow, they seemed even smaller.
“I, uh,” Zuko cleared his throat. “I’ll require supplies. Before I go.”
---
They... did not have supplies. Not extra ones. This didn’t stop them from trying to give him supplies, food and blankets and anything else he could think to ask for. But each blanket was a pelt hunted by someone’s grandfather, had been inked with images and stories by someone’s mother, was the favorite of someone’s husband or brother or uncle or cousin--
They couldn’t go to the nearest market to replace things, here.
And when they talked about food, about what they could spare, they kept sneaking glances to their children, who were sneaking glances at Zuko from the huts, sticking their heads just over the snowy ledges like their fur-trimmed hoods would hide them. Their mothers and aunts shooed them away, and they crept back, like barnacle-crabs. Zuko glared, and they disappeared.
“When are your men coming back?” he asked. “They’re hunting, aren’t they?”
Oh. So that was what they looked like, when they weren’t trying to hide their hate.
---
Zuko wrapped himself up in the same blanket that night. It was printed inside with fine lines and images, telling a story he didn’t know. He wondered whose favorite it was.
---
Kanna wondered how quickly he’d wake—if he’d wake—if she built the fire up with wet driftwood and tundra grass, if she had one of the younger girls boost up a child to plug the air hole, if she let the smoke draw its own blanket down over this fire child.
---
It was hard to know when to wake up, because the sun never set. So everyone was up before him, and they all had spears and clubs and—and nets, and trap lines, and snow googles with their single slat to protect the eyes from snow blindness. Zuko had seen those once, at the Ember Island Museum of Ethnography, where they’d gone when it was too rainy for anything more exciting.
Oh. They were going hunting.
“Give me that,” Zuko said, and took a spear.
The women looked at him. One of them adjusted her googles.
“I can hunt,” he scowled.
He did not, in fact, know how to hunt.
---
“Give me that,” the Fire Prince said, and Kanna almost, almost gave him her ulu. Humans, like most animals, had an artery in their legs that would bleed them quick enough.
She kept skinning the rabbit-mink one of the women had snared.
“I can help,” he said, with less grace than most of their toddlers. Likely with the skinning skills of a toddler, too. She wasn’t going to let their unwanted visitor ruin a perfectly good pelt.
“Chop the meat,” she said, and gave him a different knife. “It’s dinner.”
“...This is really sharp,” he said a moment later, looking at the knife with some surprise.
“Is it,” said Kanna.
---
Things the Fire Prince was convinced he could do: hunt (until he realized he couldn’t tell the tracks of a rabbit-mink from a leopard-rabbit apart); spear fish (at least he could dry himself); pack snow for an igloo (frustrated princes ran hot); ice fish (the prince was a problem that kept coming close to solving itself).
Things the Fire Prince could actually do: mince meat, increasingly finely; gather berries and herbs, once he stopped trying to crush them; dig roots, under toddler supervision; mend nets, after the intermediary step of learning to braid hair loopies.
“Can’t I take him ice fishing again?” asked one of the women, as she watched Prince Zuko put as much apparent concentration into braiding her daughter’s hair as his people had into exterminating hers.
“Wait,” said another woman, sitting up straight. “Wait wait wait. I just had an idea.”
---
Three words: Infinite. Hot. Water.
---
Summer was coming to an end. The sun actually set, now, and the night was getting longer, and colder. The salmon-otter nets were mended and ready. The smoking racks were still full of cod-lemmings. The children were all a little older, the women all a little more used to doing both halves of their tribes’ chores; a little more used to not watching the horizon, waiting for help to come.
The Fire Prince was staring at the canoes again.
“Are you actually going to try leaving in one of those?” Kanna asked.
“...No.”
“Come on, then; someone needs to watch the kids while the women are hunting.”
She didn’t leave him alone with them, of course. But she could have.
---
Elsewhere, the war continued.
The moon turned red, for a moment none could sleep through; they did not learn why.
The comet came and went, leaving their castaway prince laying on the beach, his breath fogging up into the night sky above him, as the energy crashed from his system as quickly as it had come. Above, lights began to dance in the sky; Zuko pulled his hood up, so none of those spirits—children, dead too soon—got any ideas about kicking his head off to be their ball.
The war had ended. The world didn’t feel any different; no one in the south would know until spring came again.
---
Suffice it to say, Sokka and Katara were not prepared for this particular homecoming.
#I find it important to note that Zuko is ABSOLUTELY mad about this in the background#It's just not helping him at all#Sokka you're their superior officer call them off#SOKKA#avatar the last airbender#atla#Aang for one LOVES a captive audience#Hey do you think we could have been friends?#Zuko: We could be friends RIGHT NOW if you UNTIED ME#Aang: DEAL#and that's how the Fire Prince became contractually bound to be the Avatar's (very grumpy) friend#(also Aang: pays the kids off with sweets behind Zuko's back)

it's pretty wild to me that people don't see that aang running off to save katara in CoD is his luke in empire strikes back moment, where he runs headlong into his want and attachment and he's narratively punished for doing so and not learning his lesson - aang runs after katara despite guru pathik's warning, like luke runs after leia and han from yoda on dagobah despite yoda's warning; similarly, as a result, things go to hell in ba sing se like they do on bespin - aang enters the avatar state before he's ready and gets killed, and ba sing se falls to the fire nation, luke fights vader before he's ready, loses a hand, and symbolically commits suicide after vader tells him he's luke's father.
the difference between their character arcs is that george lucas and co. actually went thru with luke's hero's journey and understood the fundamental difference between attachment and love, whereas I don't think bryke understood this difference and then dropped this from aang's arc pretty much completely and replaced it with aang digging in his heels into his want and attachment and he gets rewarded with energy bending from a lion turtle, the avatar state from a random pointy rock, and his forever girl from the self-indulgent white men that couldn't bring themselves to give their hero a compelling character arc that meant he might not have gotten everything he wanted at the end.
#the wasted potential of aang's arc gets to me so bad#the narrative and thematic set up is entirely there and they just shove it in the bin lmao#it especially irks as someone raised buddhist and dealing with writers that invoke these themes out of a fascination#with the religion and philosophy but then a complete unwillingess to actually commit to what those themes require of the character arcs#anyway sorry to say it#but zuko's arc does a better job embodying buddhist themes than aang's does in the end#despite all misappropriated aesthetics to the contrary#aang critical#but its really the writing like i LIKE aang i love his potential i hate how self indulgently he's written by the end of the show#atla critical#meta*#holly talks bs#also yes it would've been better narratively for aang katara zuko to the go the way of luke leia han#even if katara couldn't have been revealed as aang's surprise secret twin lmao#the thematic conceit of the triangle is the same in that luke and aang get over their infatuation with the first pretty girl he sees#and becomes the hero he needs to be#meanwhile hanleia and zutara are saving each other and being cool and kissing#anyway

I genuinely want to know what show the people who say that Aang never respected Katara are watching. "Aang never let Katara feel anything other than what he wanted her to feel" "He idealized her" "He didn't care about her feelings" "He didn't support her the way she supported him". WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS FROM??? That's a rhetorical question because I already know what episodes/moments they're using to make those assertions (The Southern Raiders and the kiss in Ember Island Players), and even then, THEY'RE WRONG.
Let's start with TSR. This episode gets so misinterpreted it's not even funny. First off, Aang was never even upset with Katara in this episode, he's just warning her against killing someone??? He never gets mad at her or berates her. He just talks to her with a level head??? He openly acknowledges that he knows and understands how much rage and pain Katara is in, and he never tells her that she shouldn't feel it, he just advises her not to act rashly because of it??? Where is the lack of respect? Where is he ignoring her feelings or getting upset with her for not acting the way he wants her to? He lets her take Appa and even tells her that he understands that this is a journey she needs to take and supports her doing so, he just doesn't want her to kill someone. Honestly Aang shows more respect for Katara by knowing who she is as a person and not enabling her in her revenge than Zuko who is only going on this trip with her so that she'll forgive him, not because he actually cares that she's upset over the death of her mother (and this is not Zuko slander before people take it as such, I love Zuko, but it's not even subtext that his motivations in this episode are selfish and not about Katara).
As for the kiss in EIP, yes, it was not okay. Yes, it was a mistake. Yes, he shouldn't have done it after Katara laid a clear boundary, but he recognizes that immediately. After Katara- rightfully- gets upset with him, he gets upset with himself. We also see that he never repeats that mistake again and is fully okay with letting Katara lead after that. Which is why it's Katara who initiates the final kiss on the balcony. And if you still don't think he learned anything from it, he starts to ask for her consent in the comics before kissing her, showing that he absolutely DID grow from that mistake. So, we're really going to let one moment where a 12-year-old boy made a mistake dictate the entire show and negate everything that came before it??? That's coocoo banana's behavior.
I also think that those assertions are completely baseless because when does Aang idealize Katara? When does he hate her rage? When does he not support her? Is it when he laughed with her after she stole from pirates? Or in that same episode where he constantly reaffirms her skills as a waterbender- first by saying that he's able to pick it up so easily because she's a great teacher and then later when he refers to her as a waterbender which makes her so fucking happy? Is it when he gets so upset that Pakku refuses to teach Katara how to waterbend that he tries to walk away from his own waterbending training? Is it when he goes behind Pakku's back to teach her anyway? Or when he stands by actively cheering her on when she's raging against the patriarchy and fights Pakku? Is it when he calls her Sifu Katara because she expressed that he referred to Toph that way but not her? Is it when he helped her commit ecoterrorism and told her she was a hero for helping the people in that Fire Nation village? Is it when he holds her after she breaks down because she learned how to bloodbend? Is it when he comforts her after Jet's death? Is it... you get the point, don't you?
Aang recognizing Katara as someone who is strong and capable is not him idealizing her. Him not enabling her committing murder is not him hating when she feels rage. Aang actively supports Katara's rage on multiple occasions, he just doesn't enable her when he knows she's acting out of character. If you don't ship Kataang, that's fine, but please don't make up baseless accusations to try and tear them down just because you're mad that a ship that had no basis in canon (potential is not evidence) wasn't canon.
#kataang#anti zutara#for the tags#because people are crazy#and I don't have the time or energy to deal with it#pro kataang#pro aang#aang defense squad#katara x aang#this isn't even about not letting people ship what they want to ship#it really is just about people who bend over backwards to rewrite canon and hate on these characters in order to justify their ship#let them breathe for god's sake#adding here that i saw someone say that Aang treats Katara like the madonna and i 🧍🏻♀️🧍🏻♀️🧍🏻♀️#PLEASE DEVELOP MEDIA LITERACY SKILLS IM BEGGING#DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT THE MADONNA/WHORE COMPLEX IS???#GENUINELY BC WHEN?? WHEN DOES HE DO THAT???#*cries in english major*

the thing about knowledge seeker Zuko is that his only company for the past three years have been Wan Shi Tong and his knowledge seekers. his only human interaction has come in the form of trading with the sandbenders, who treat him as some kind of spirit. this has done a number on his social skills.
it doesn't help that Wan Shi Tong simply just... knows things. so it doesn't occur to him to tell the Avatar and his companions anything about himself. like say, for example, his name. When they take to calling him 'Spirit', he doesn't even blink- most people call him some variation of that anyways.
he doesn't see any point in telling them about his amnesia. his past doesn't matter to him- why should it matter to them? just the same, there's no need to tell them about how he ended up with Wan Shi Tong. or that he's human. he's pretty sure they've figured that one out, since he's a bender and all.
(meanwhile, the Gaang has VERY divided opinions on that very subject.)
#knowledge seeker zuko au#toph is certain he's 100% a human#katara believes he's a spirit#sokka thinks he's a spirit but like. that he has a once-human deal going on. like yue. do you know yue? she's the new moon spirit#aang feels like he's both? like he could end up becoming one or the other. but he's not sure which one Spirit wants

Roku Week Day 6: Fire Lord
[id: two digital illustrations. The first drawing shows teenage Roku and Sozin sitting on a rooftop overlooking the city. Roku is looking down with a gentle smile on his face. Beside him Sozin sits, leaning on one of his knees. He is looking at Roku with a soft smile. There are gentle flickers of light in the background.
The second drawing has Sozin, now an adult in his Fire Lord robes, leaning forward on a railing overlooking the city. Gone is the smile of his youth, now looking pissed off. The specks of lights from before now resemble embers. /end id]
Fire Lord Sozin... what a bitch. However, the dynamic with Roku and how everything just falls apart is interesting. How do you go from being BFFs with a guy to planning his death (and taking over the world)
#roku week#roku week 2024#atla#avatar the last airbender#avatar roku#roku#fire lord sozin#sozin#I'm just saying I want to see this man destroy his life and the lives of everyone around him#like how does Roku deal with the knowledge -be it when alive or through Aang#that his FRIEND the kid he grew up with caused all this destruction and death#how do you look back at those nice memories together knowing what is to happen#idk what im going about these two just give me lots of thoughts#also dont look at the bg I half assed it so much

Avatar vs Antagonist switch up
Aang: Hey, what if we like, did a whole antagonist swap thing? Like instead of me fighting Ozai, I get someone else, and someone else gets Ozai? Korra: Oh god yes, let's do it. Roku: That's not really fair, Korra has a lot of enemies. Kuruk: Says the guy that what? Had Sozin? Kyoshi: I call Sozin! And Ozai! Wan: Wait are we really doing this?! Korra: Kyoshi are you sure? What if it's during the comet? Kyoshi: Comet-shmamet. The fight's mine regardless. Kuruk: Kyoshi you seem a little too gungho about this Kyoshi: I have beef with Fire Nation Royalty. Roku: Kyoshi I don't think that's the best mentality- Kyoshi: I don't care! I'm ending their bloodline! *_* Roku: They're still really strong! Kyoshi: I'm stronger! Easy-peasy lemon squeezy! I'll kick their ass over easy! Yangchen it's your turn! Yangchen: I will take Zaheer and P'Li. :) Korra: Are you sure? They're kinda- Yangchen: I'll take out the combustion woman first, giving myself a head in the fight. Kuruk: A....head. Wait, you don't mean you're gonna blo- Yangchen: After that, I'll marionette her corpse in front of that fraud airbender to show him what a real earthly teather is. Then, I'll show him how the pros rip air out of people's lungs. Aang: Jesus Christ what is the matter with those two. Kuruk: I'm taking Vaatu I guess. Both of them. Korra: Why do you want Vaatu? Kuruk: I don't think anyone else here is capable of taking them on, except you, me, and Wan. Korra: Oh fair. Wan: So like both of our Vaatus on at the same time or- Kuruk: Oh spirits no, I'm 1V1ing them. I'm not crazy like Kyoshi or Yangchen. Tho I suppose I'll have to deal with Unalaq too. Korra: Fine, I'll take all of Kuruk's fights then. Kuruk: You sure about that kid? Korra: Yeah I'll just spiritbend, it'll be fine. Aang! Wan! Roku! Have you figured out what you wanna do? Roku: I guess I can take Jianzhu? Wan: Um......the other two Red Lotus I guess? Don't worry Roku, I'll keep the lavabender away from you. ;) Roku: Thanks Wan. :/ Aang: I'm sorry, but are we seriously going to ignore what Kyoshi and Yangchen said?????!

...I should be editing my dissertation but now I'm thinking about how both Azula and Katara are perhaps the most "adultified" of the atla characters and...hmm. Interesting.
#something something about the primary female characters getting treated like grown women while the boys...aren't so much#except maybe toph...who is the least feminine of the girls#I mean all of these kids have to grow up fast and deal with responsibilities no child should be shouldering#aang sokka and zuko all deal with this don't get me wrong#but all of them have a lot more allowance for childish moments#iroh provides zuko the space to be...if not an ordinary teen than to at least express his emotions like a teenage boy#aang is constantly granted spaces to be childish and carefree#and sokka has always had katara looking out for him which allows him to be free from the parentification she was saddled with#meanwhile toph's entire arc is about connecting with the freedoms she wasn't granted as a kid in her home#so she's allowed to be wild and crazy and her desire for that is even explored in one episode#with there being some acknowledgement that she actually DOES appreciate katara's 'motherliness'#but katara is rarely allowed a moment to be a kid and it is arguably only in the first episode that aang even comments on that#and azula never gets a moment of levity#even in the beach she's not really granted the space to be as carefree as zuko mai and ty lee#...anyways get these girls a mother figure please#let girls be girls and not young women#atla

Oh, Aang, you're really in it now...
This is Zu—I mean, Jian Li and Katara's second meeting in the Kyoshi Warriors AU. The first proper one, anyway.
Once they get through a minor difference of opinion or two (“I can carry my own basket!” “Never said you—” “I'm not weak!” “I didn't—” “Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean—” “Would you listen for once, woman?!” ) they'll become nearly inseparable.
For now Jian Li will carry Katara's basket all the way to the Kyoshi Warriors' dojo and, once there, they'll mercilessly tease Sokka when they see him in uniform.
#zutara#atla#zuko#avatar the last airbender#katara#kyoshi warriors au#atla art#atla fanart#prince zuko#katara of the southern water tribe#kyoshi warrior ursa au#kyoshi warrior zuko#zutara fanart#zutara au#zuko fanart#atla zuko#katara fanart#kyoshi warriors#kyoshi island#They're a complete menace once they get going. Breaking hearts all over the Earth Kingdom and turning Sokka's hair grey prematurely#Aang is just a little puppy who made a few sarcastic remarks at the wrong time. But it got Zuko thinking out loud so that works too#Katara heard him and while she very secretly agrees (what did he mean “that doesn't sound like fun either”? He should've helped her!)...#she's also the Avatar's number one defender and needs to protect his honor. Agni bless the child.#And then poor Zuko offers to carry her basket because he's seen her do all the work alone and the freaking Avatar has just refused to help#And momma Ursa raised a gentleman. So of course he wants to help!#But Katara's had to deal with Sokka's “traditional views on women” all the way to Kyoshi and Aang is busy with his little fanclub#And now this extremely handsome stranger who's really just trying to be nice (he's also so awkward it's adorable) offers to carry her basket#And he's being really nice and sweet and considerate about it damn it#Of course she snaps!#She still thanks him for his help tho. Once they absolutely murder Sokka with their teasing they become a package deal.

#atla#atlaedit#zutara#zutaraedit#gifs#my gifs#*uzs#i am usually much more interested in their dynamic in tcod onward but. this scene is SO funny#like obviously he's doing it in service of his mission to capture aang#but there's something SO visually startling about the way he unceremoniously drops aang to deal with her#and like. in their previous fight scene he underestimated her only to be bested. he managed to escape and get aang because of the sun's#renewing power and influence#but he very much does learn quickly she poses a real threat to his goal and doesn't underestimate her again here#for her part she is (rightly) so fucking done with this guy LMAO#i can hear in her head “i am a WATERBENDER surrounded by ice and snow in a blizzard what do you THINK is about to happen”

i already have so many gripes with the original show and how they handle aang’s character arc and his relationship with katara/how they disserviced her by putting her in that relationship and i don’t trust netflix to fix ANY of that in the slightest, in fact i think they’ll probably make things i actually like about the original even worse and the actors are so young too oh my god Kiawentiio get behind me and it’s gonna be another horde of new fans rehashing the same tired old discourse i cannot do this again helpppp
#i’m fucking tweaking rn man#here comes a new wave of perfomative activism#atla fandom critical#atla fandom salt#anti kataang#i noticed an uptick in zutara/kataang discourse recently but i didn’t realize it was bc the show is coming out tdy 😭#i cannot do this again i cannot relive another renaissance where zutara shippers are demonized for existence#i cannot deal with people shitting on katara for no reason again and people selectively ignoring zuko’s character arc when it’s convenient#for their argument and ppl acting like i summoned satan himself when i critique the aang#atla discourse#i don’t even try to engage in discourse it’s just always recommended to me no matter what i do and i’m just so tired of it
