Alcaraz Overcomes Illness to Beat Rublev, Zverev Dominates Ruud at ATP Finals
Carlos Alcaraz battled through illness to secure a 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) victory over Andrey Rublev at the ATP Finals in Turin on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Spaniard, who had been struggling with a chest complaint and cut short his practice session the day before, showed resilience in his second match of the tournament.
Despite the health setback, Alcaraz played with composure and precision, especially from the baseline, as he dispatched Rublev in straight sets. Alcaraz won the first set in 37 minutes, breaking Rublev twice, and clinched the second set in a tense tie-break. He hit 33 winners compared to just 14 from the Russian.
“I surprised myself with how I played from the baseline,” Alcaraz reflected after the match. “I stayed calm and focused on my game, forgetting about not feeling well.”
In a heartfelt gesture, Alcaraz scribbled "Valencia" on a TV monitor post-match, offering his support to those in Spain affected by recent floods.
Earlier in the day, German second seed Alexander Zverev claimed his second win of the tournament with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud. Zverev, a two-time ATP Finals champion, took control of the match after a closely contested first set, eventually breaking Ruud in the second to secure the win. With this result, Zverev is now one match away from a semi-final berth, needing a win over Alcaraz in their final group stage match on Friday to guarantee his place in the next round.
“I think it was a very good match from both of us," Zverev said after the win. "It was close, but I’m happy to get the victory today.”
Alcaraz's triumph over Rublev came after a disappointing loss to Ruud on Monday, marking a significant improvement in his form despite his ongoing chest discomfort. Alcaraz showed his mental toughness, coming from 40-15 down to break Rublev and take the first set. In the second, he had to save two set points before closing out the match.
Rublev, who has now lost six consecutive matches at the ATP Finals, has yet to recover his form since reaching the semi-finals last year. Meanwhile, Zverev's dominant performance against Ruud demonstrated his readiness to contend for a third ATP Finals title.
Looking ahead, American Taylor Fritz will face Australia's Alex de Minaur on Thursday, while world number one Jannik Sinner will play Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, who is undefeated so far, can advance to the semi-finals with a set win over Medvedev.

Alcaraz To Face Sinner In Indian Wells Semis; Rudd To Meet Medvedev
Indian Wells Tennis Garden: Carlos Alcaraz moved into the Indian Wells semifinal after beating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-1 in a quarterfinal match like no other.Swarmed by bees, Carlos Alcaraz swung his racquet in defense, halting play for nearly two hours. Despite the interruption, Alcaraz showcased incredible resilience and skill, overpowering Zverev with his monstrous ball-striking to secure a victory and a spot in the semifinals. Reflecting on the surreal moment, Alcaraz described the chaos of thousands of bees surrounding him, illustrating the intensity of the situation. With the help of a beekeeper, play resumed, and Alcaraz emerged from the delay in top form, demonstrating his prowess on the court with blistering forehand winners and impeccable court coverage. “It was strange, I’ve never seen something like that on a tennis court,” Alcaraz said. “When we ran out of the court, we were watching the bee invasion on the TV and we laughed a lot about it. It was funny for me. It’s going to be remembered for that, not for tennis.” The bizarre incident occurred in the 20-year-old’s second service game of the match when bees surrounded him and completely covered the spidercam on Stadium 1. "I saw the sky and there were thousands (of bees) flying, stuck in my hair, going to me. It was crazy," Alcaraz said. A beekeeper was called to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and later Alcaraz kept Zverev from defeating him for the third time in six months. Alcaraz's victory marked his tenth consecutive win at Indian Wells and propelled him into his eighth Masters 1000 semi-final, where he is set to face off against Jannik Sinner. Jannik Sinner extended his unbeaten streak in 2024 to 16 matches with a comfortable victory over Jiri Lehecka 6-3 6-3 in the other quarter-finals. The world No. 3 won his 19th match in a row since losing to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals in November. At 22 years old, Sinner has become the youngest male player in the Open era to start a season with 16 successive victories. In another quarter-final match, Tommy Paul battled past Casper Ruud 6-2 1-6 6-3, reaching the semi-finals of an ATP Masters tournament for the second time in his career. Paul will face Daniil Medvedev in the semis who came from down a break in the second set against Holger Rune to get back on serve and then went on to secure a victory by e 7-5, 6-4 win in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells for the second consecutive year. Djokovic Aspires To Replicate Tom Brady s Longevity In Tennis
National Football League: Novak Djokovic has emphatically declared retirement is not on his horizon, expressing a strong desire to follow in the footsteps of American football legend Tom Brady by extending his playing career well beyond the age of 40. Brady completed an illustrious career spanning 23 seasons in the National Football League, securing seven Super Bowl victories with both the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He ultimately decided to hang up his cleats earlier this year at the age of 45. The 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, gearing up for an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz as part of the prelude to the 2024 season said he has learnt a lot from Brady. “Tom Brady is a great example of a champion in his sport and someone that has had such a great career and longevity. He has put a lot of hours and a lot of time into self-care, into recovery, into making sure that in a way every aspect of his body and mind is covered so that he can have a long-lasting, successful career. “I know him personally and I learned a lot from him, from his example, and hopefully I can have a career that goes up to 40 or maybe even beyond - let’s see," Djokovic told reporters in Riyadh. “I feel great in my own body right now and I’ve been playing some really high-quality tennis. 2023 was one of the best seasons I’ve had in my life and why stop while you’re still playing great? So I’ll keep going and take (each) year, one by one, and see how far I go," Djokovic added. The 36-year-old Serbian ended the year with seven titles -- two Masters 1000 titles, three Grand Slams, an ATP 250 title and the season-ending ATP Finals. This year marked the fourth season in which Djokovic secured three out of the four Grand Slams, joining the ranks of his other standout seasons in 2011 and 2015. The Sebian great also cemented his status as a tennis legend by clinching a record-extending eighth year-end No.1 finish. Moreover, he will look to add to his record 24 Grand Slams (including 10 Australian Opens) and 40 ATP Masters 1000 titles in 2024. Read the full article
