Okay so there was no denying that since Clover had come out to Patch, there was a certain... tension... in the air. Tai wouldn’t have said it was a bad one, not by any means, but it was definitely awkward. 

He wasn’t oblivious either. He knew that Clover had caught him watching as he and Clover had sparred in the yard, knew that he wasn’t always the best with the poker faces when it came to people he cared about... Honestly, the last thing Tai expected was this particular question though. Part of him figured Clover would’ve called him out for the way he looked at Qrow, the way he acted around him, if anything. 

The thing was, Tai also knew how Qrow felt about Clover and vice versa. He never wanted to get in the middle of that, despite his own feelings. Back in the day, he remembered how awkward it was between him and Qrow when it had been Summer they were both interested in. Sure, they had made it work... but Tai knew that Qrow also wasn’t the poly relationship sort. 

Plus, there was something very different to the vibe that existed between Clover and Qrow. What they had was... well it was certainly on a different level then what he’d had with Summer. Back then Tai could tell that Qrow loved Summer deeply but he’d never gotten the “Till Death Do Us Part” vibe from their relationship. With Clover... well, he could tell his old friend had finally grown up a little and he could feel that Qrow might actually be willing to go there if it was something Clover ever wanted.

Did he really want to risk that?

On the other hand, Tai knew that there would be no way he could be honest about his own feelings for Qrow if he didn’t have Clover’s approval. Tai just wasn’t sure what his feelings were exactly for Clover. He cared about him, there was no doubt in his mind about that. He’d definitely become someone that Tai would consider a part of this family but did he risk hurting Qrow to figure it out?

He knew how ‘deadly’ something as simple as a kiss could be after all. 

Gentle blue eyes came up to meet green, a tentative smile pulling his lips. “I mean, you can, you have the ability... I just... I just don’t know if it’s the best idea. The last thing I want is for anything to come between you and Qrow. He... he loves you and I’ve never seen him get attached to someone like this... not even Summer. You saw how broken he was when you got here. It was because of what he thought he’d done to you...”

Taking a deep breath, Tai turned his attention outside where Qrow was busying himself with drills with Harbinger in it’s scythe form. “I guess, I just want to know why you’d want to when you’ve already got him...”

The ex Ace Ops Captain had picked up on quite a lot of things since he’d arrived on patch willing to do anything he could to find Qrow. Times when both Qrow and Tai both seemed to think he wasn’t paying attention or had found himself lost in the pages of a book, Clover always kept his attention on what was happening around him. He was about to make a reply when he’d caught the look on Tai’s face as the other pulled their gaze from out the window.

Clover was no stranger to those around him having had some sort of history that he might not have always been privy to. Just part of life he had often assumed. Teal colored eyes watched the blond again cross the room this time instead of standing he sat down on the couch. Taking up the offered chair Clover sat down listening as Tai spoke.

“He’s hinted at working with others, and that things had gone downhill but I never really bothered to ask.” Sitting a bit further back into the chair Clovrr gave the smallest of sighs. “I had always figured he’d tell me when he was ready.” Watching Tai and the motions made Clover continued. “That’s not to say I’m not curious. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t just the least bit curious. Although if it helps you come to terms of telling Qrow then I am all ears.”

This was beginning to feel far more awkward and wrong than he’d intended it to. He didn’t want to hurt Qrow in any sort of way but if this meant he could then that would pose a very large problem. He’d agree with Tai, doing something like that to Qrow would crush any little bit of trust he had in Clover or Tai.

Lifting his head up Clover watched as Tai crossed the room to look out the window. The footsteps thumping along as he moved. That was what had caught his attention first and as Tai moved along Clover tilted his head slightly as if to better watch the other walk away from him. “You like him too don’t you.”

The comment was a guess at the very least and Clover actually wasn’t sure he was even right in the first place. This was surely going to go bad if he was wrong but the air of the room didn’t seem to lead to it not being true.

With every step Tai could feel Clover’s keen eyes on him. Even as he stood there with his attention out the window looking at the fluid motions of his old team mate, familiar as they’d ever been. The look of fondness became a bit more clear for the effort. It actually made it so it didn’t phase Tai in the slightest when the question came from Clover’s lips. It wasn’t like he hadn’t been telegraphing that fact with his body language and the not so vague insinuations towards that very fact.

“It’s more than that Clover.” There was a weight to his words even as he refused to take his gaze from Qrow outside. “But you’re also not wrong. No use hiding it or beating around it, but there’s also a lot of history there. I’m pretty sure that hasn’t been lost on you since you got here.”

Clover was pretty perceptive after all, that much Tai had observed since the day he’d met the man back in Vale. It was part of why he didn’t bother trying to hide the fact that Qrow was here when he asked about him. He also knew the man had decent intentions and a good heart, even if he HAD been Altas elite. (Not that Tai had the same misgivings about the kingdom that Qrow did, but he also knew how James and his people could be.)

It was a long moment before Tai actually pulled his gaze back from the window to the man in the room with him. If anything was going to ever come of this, there was still a lot Clover needed to know, needed to decide. Tai was perfectly happy keeping his feelings locked away, the same as he’d done for the last twenty-something years, especially if it meant Qrow would finally have a chance at something special. But if Clover still wanted to figure this out after he knew more about the past, knew why he’d never told Qrow the truth… well then he was willing to put his feelings on the line. 

“Look Clover, I’ve never been able to tell him, not after everything that’s happened with our old team mates and… not with a lot of things that I was raised to believe. I’ll tell you if you want and you can decide from there what you want to do. I just can’t do anything with you, or any other guy really, until I tell…” For a brief moment Tai’s eyes shifted to look out the window and then back at Clover. “…him the truth. It’s… it’s important, not just because of how much you mean to him, but also because I can’t let him think the same things he did when Summer and I started seeing each other.”

Finally moving away from the window, Tai went to sit on the couch, motioning for Clover to have a seat on the chair to his right. “Like I said, there’s a lot of history. I don’t know how much, if anything really, that Qrow may have told you. We both know he’s very… selective… about what he’s willing to talk about.”

Sitting forward, Tai rest his arms on his legs, his eyes focusing on the floor for the time being. “It actually goes back to when we were first put together as a team… and the fact that sometimes your blood is your worst enemy…”
