Music of my Soul - Xicheng Fic

The song has been something that he's had in his head for as long as he could remember. It started off as a gentle tune - no words. Just a soothing melody that made his heart feel full but also... sad.

No. Sad wasn't quite the right word for it. It was more like a longing... Not that a 5 year old A-Huan knew how to articulate the confusing emotions he was feeling. So when he was old enough, he had asked his uncle Qiren (a famed music teacher) about the song he kept hearing.

"Uncle... do you know this song? It goes 'da da daa, da da daa, da da, da daaa'.." he tried humming it but his uncle shook his head, his usually stern expression smoothing out in amusement.

"No. I can't say that I have A-Huan. Where did you hear it?" "I dunno. I just... know it.... feel it, in here..." the toddler spoke, pressing a hand over his heart.

A surprised hum escaped Lan Quiren as he looked at his nephew with an understanding glint in his eyes.

"A-Huan. That song you're hearing... it's your heart song. Does it feel kind of funny? Like it's not quite right?" the older man questioned as the little boy's eyes widened before he nodded furiously.

He knew uncle would know what it all meant!

"Well, it feels like that because your soulmate has not been born yet. When the music changes, you'll know that they're in this world. The closer you are, the stronger the music will feel." Lan Qiren spoke, eyes softening as the little boy mouthed the word 'soulmate' to himself in wonder.

"Like you and uncle Han?" the little boy asked, his uncle's small smile widening even further at the mention of his husband. His other half. The one who completed the magnum opus of his soul.

"Yes. Like me and your uncle Han."

Over the next month and half, Lan Huan would quietly hum the song to himself; wishing, hoping to hear a change in the tune. While the current song was wonderful in own right, something in him longed for the feeling of completion that Uncle Qiren had told him about.

"A-Zhan I wonder what my soulmate is going to be like... will they like cake as much I do? Or Pokemon?" he asked his 2 year old little brother who could do nothing but stare at his brother in confusion, little lips pursed in a pout as the older male withheld the soft toy block from his reach.

"Ge...'bwok." A-zhan demanded, holding out a pudgy hand for the toy. Sighing, Lan Huan gave the boy the toy and laid down on the floor. It was almost bedtime and they should really be cleaning up. Sighing as dramatically as his 5 year old body could, A-Huan launched himself upwards to clean up and get ready for bed. Mama came in not too long after to help get A-zhan ready too. That night as he laid in his bed, he couldn't help but feel a little restless. Not even counting bunnies could help him fall asleep. It didn't help that it had started to storm outside too.

The sound of rain and thunder muffled by thick glass and concrete. A-Huan wasn't afraid of thunder. He was a big boy. But he didn't like the sound of it either so he started to hum his song. He didn't know how long he had been humming for - his eyes felt really tired - but just before he fell asleep, he felt it.

A change in the tune. It was subtle at first- barely noticeable but then the 'da daa daaa' he was used to suddenly segues to an unfamiliar but light & airy 'la la laa laaa laaa laaa' and suddenly he was wide awake. His heart finally felt full - the song complete for the first time and 'Ohhh! I have to tell uncle!!' he thought, climbing out of bed to toddle towards the phone in the living room.

The house was dark and quiet - everyone having gone to sleep but this was important! Dialing the number he had memorised by heart, he waited several beat before the sound of Uncle Han's baritone voice greeted his hear. "Hello?"

"Hello Uncle Han! May I speak with Uncle Qiren please." A-Huan spoke quietly but there was no hiding the excitement in his voice.

"…xiao Huan? Isn't it pass your bedtime already…? Wait let me… A-ren. It's Xiao Huan."

There was a little shuffling sound on the other hand before Lan Qiren's familiar voice spoke up, sounding a little worried.

"Lan Huan? Are you alright?"

"Uncle! It happened. My song. It's complete." he breathed out in a rush. A beat of silence passed before Lan Qiren was speaking again, voice warm and full of wonder.

"That's wonderful A-Huan. I'll stop by tomorrow so you can tell me more… but for now, go to sleep, ok?"

With an affirmative sound, Lan Huan said his goodnights and ran off to sleep. Tomorrow he was going to ask Uncle to teach him music so he can finally hear his song out loud instead of just in his head.

Years passed since the night Lan Huan first heard his complete heartsong. During the time he had studied under his uncle to master the guitar and piano. Unfortunately singing was out because he was apparently (tragically) tone deaf. But what he lacked in vocals, he more than made up for it with his mastery of instruments. He had also started to seriously search for his other half as soon as he hit 21.

The amount of times the song in his heart grew louder before fading away had been madening. He had come close a few times in recent years - the most recent was during a party thrown by Nie Huaisang (his bestfriend's little brother and Lan Zhan's school mate) at Nie Minjue's double storey manor. But then again, half the school campus and then some had turned up and no matter how much he tired, he kept missing them, his soulmate.

Such failure would have depressed any other man, but Lan Huan was everything but ordinary. He was determined and he had faith. ("He's a block headed romantic is what he is." Nie Minjue would protest - though he didn't seem all too bothered by it. In fact, he even seemed rather proud!).

Now it seemed all that determination was paying off. Freshly 26, Lan Huan stared up the stage almost reverently as a handsome man sang his… no… their song on stage; voice like a siren luring Lan Huan in.

Though there was no music accompaniment, Lan Huan could practically hear the strums of a guitar, the beat of the drums, the sounds of a piano. The man - younger than him, definitely - had on a grudging expression, his beautiful face flushed red as some other boys cheered him on - hooting and hollering; almost drowning out his voice.

Lan Huan couldn't have that! So without thinking, he rushed towards the stage; ignoring Mingjue's cry of 'Lan Huan, wtf are you doing?'

On his way over, he spotted one of the previous acts - a bright eyed, talented guitarist who went by the stage name MianMian. Asking to borrow her guitar 'for love!' he had cited, he started to strum the familiar melody - the music blending seamlessly with the lyrics the siren was singing up on the stage.

Startled, the singer's eyes roamed across the crowd to see where the melody was coming from - stormy grey-blue eyes meeting Lan Huan's warm honey-gold. For a moment, it felt like the world had disappeared leaving just the two of them.

Lan Huan's music seemed to give the singer more confidence and finally the song that had followed Lan Huan since childhood was finally given life - vibrant and electric and beautiful. When the finishing notes sounded, the duo were met with a deafening round of applause. And yet, they didn't seem to hear any of that - gravitating towards the middle of the stage.

To each other.

"…How do you know that melody?" the stranger - his soulmate - asked; sounding enchanted for lack of a better word.

"You may not understand but the song has been in my dream… in my heart and soul for as long as I can remember." Lan Huan replied, equally enamoured.

"Mine too…" his soul mate responded, a pink tongue darting out to wet his lip before he reached out a hand to shake.

"My name is Jiang Cheng."

Taking the other's hand into his own, Lan Huan couldn't help the warm, dimpled smile that spread across his face.

"Nice to meet you Jiang Cheng. I'm Lan Huan."

“Well, you’ll be staying here for a while, little lady.” Wei Wuxian said as they entered the house. “Yours will be the room on the left.” It was the room kept for guests. Lan Sizhui visited them sometimes and slept there. The farther from the room on the right the better, since, after all, it was their own room, and the things wangxian did in their own room. Well.

And so it began. At first nothing seemed out of the ordinary. MianMian was quite the quiet girl and she usually stayed in her room and played, while Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji attended their own matters, but always keeping an eye on her. The funny thing was that even though Wei Wuxian was more easy going, (as opposed to Lan Wangji who still stuck to the Gusu rules of “no running” “no talking while eating” etc), Little MianMian always turned a cold shoulder to him and obeyed everything Lan Wangji said with a nod, her big eyes shining. When they went outside, to the market for example, she would always stick to Lan Wangji’s side. While having to cross a busy street full of carts and horses and cows, MianMian refused to hold Wei Wuxian’s hand, and exclaimed that she wants to hold only Hanguang Jun’s hand. “Aiya Lan Zhan, it’s not fair! What am I doing wrong? It’s not new to me that she likes you more, but to this extent? I joke around and play with her and she just sits there with a grumpy face, and all *you* have to do is give her one of your looks and she’s running after you like a little puppy. Lan Zhan, I’m jealous and I don’t know of whom of you two exactly.” He sighed deeply. Lan Wangji caressed his back and kissed him on the temple.

The more the days passed, the more MianMian got used to her new “parents”, and she even started to be more talkative. One morning as she was playing in the main room, with Lan Wangji busy writing a report and Wei Wuxian playing the flute, she suddenly said: “I want to play.” The flute melody stopped. “Hmm, but you’re already playing.” She pointed at the two of them “With you.” “Ohhh” Wei Wuxian got down from the windowsill. “what do you want to play then?” “Family.” He laughed. “Alright! Hanguang Jun did you hear that? Fine, but I’m warning you I’m not gonna be the mother, so – What, Lan Zhan? Why are you looking at me like this? Huh! Suddenly you’re interested in what we’re saying.” “No.” MianMian said. “You’re not going to be the mother, I will be the mother!” It was so obvious to her. “And he’s going to be the father.” She pointed at Lan Wangji. “Oh. Alright. Then who will I be?” “You can be the kid”. “I can be that! But I’m warning you I’m a very problematic kid. Think you can handle that, a-niang?”

“hmph.”

“Just ask if you don’t believe me! Don’t I behave really bad, a-die~~?” a snap was heard. “Hmm, it seems a-die broke his brush. You see, I told you. I already got on his nerves. I bet he also wants to punish me, right a-die?”

“Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji warned him. His tone was serious, but strained. Ink splattered over the page he was working on and over his fingers because of the broken brush. His earlobes already tinted with a shade of pink. “I will bring you a handkerchief!” Miammian suggested, sensing that her new husband clearly isn’t pleased with the other man, and wanting to take the opportunity to shine.

She ran into her room to fetch it while Wei Wuxian glanced at Lan Wangji, smirking. Lan Wangji wasn’t amused – his eyes held fire.

Mianmian came back with the promised object and handed it to Lan Wangji: “here you go, darling.” “Hey! Woah! Where did you learn to say things like that, MainMian?”

“Mother! I am mother!” she corrected him and explained at the same time. “So this is what mother calls father!”

Lan Wangji finished wiping his hands and, not passing Wei Wuxian a single look, turned to MianMian and said: “Thank you. Darling.”

Oh. Ohhhhhh so this is how they’re playing now, is it?

Since Lan Wangji was still busy with paperwork (he had to rewrite everything), it fit his father image quite well, so he didn’t really need to do much. However MianMian was trying her best to play the role of the mother: She moved furniture and vases here and there, making her movements loud on purpose. She watered the plants while singing a song.

Then she started kneading a floor pillow as if it was dough while reciting the recipe to her made-up cake out loud.

She is trying so hard to make Lan Zhan notice her, Wei Wuxian thought as he was doodling on the stack of paper she gave him as “homework”. He sighed. It reminded him that once there was another kid who tried to make the icy Lan-Er Gongzi to spare him a single glance. Time to awaken that kid. “A-NIANGGGGGG I’m hungry! Feed your miserable child!!”

“Shhh! I am not done making food yet!” “But a-niang you’ve been kneading that dough for so long, isn’t it ready yet?” “You are so annoying!” She scolded him “It’s gonna be done when I’m done!” “Is it done now?” “no.” “Now?” “NO.” “Well, is it done….” *breath* “now?” “NO!!!” “How about now, is it done yet?” “No! No! No! No! NOOOO!!!!!” “Alright.” He kept doodling. She kept torturing the pillow. “And what about n- HMMPH!!!!!” a blue glare shot straight to his lips. “Quiet, both of you. I can’t hear my own thoughts.” Lan Wangji said.

Oh sure, so you silence me but not her! Wei Wuxian folded his arms and turned his head to the side.

“Ah!! It’s ready now!” Mianmian took the pillow and brought it over to Lan Wangji. “Darling, would you try some?” “Not now, Mianmian, I’m working.” “But….” She pouted and her eyes shone as if she was about to cry “I made it especially for you!” Yeah sure and leave the baby starving!

Lan Wangji put down his brush and looked at her. “Alright.” Smiling widely, Mianmian took one of the brushes on the desk, dipped it into the pillow and offered her husband. Lan Wangji leaned closer, opened his mouth and took a bite of the air just millimetres away from the brush. “Mn. Very good. Mianmian is a very talented cook.” Oh damn. Wei Wuxian thought. This is unfair. VERY UNFAIR. Unbearably cute and unfair.

“Your wife!” Mianmian corrected him. “Right, my wife.” Your wife, huh? Well Hanguang Jun. Well. Wei Wuxian couldn’t believe he’s jealous of a little girl, but excuse him, he’s not been just reunited with Lan Wangji after years of absence, finally getting married with him, for him to call someone else his wife! Still unable to talk, Wei Wuxian stood up and went to their room. “Wei Ying?” Lan Wangji called after him but Wei Wuxian didn’t turn around. He entered the room and closed the door with a slam. Lan Wangji didn’t see this, but for a second, a spark shone in Mianmian’s eyes. Then she turned on her innocent face again. “He’s such a troublesome child, isn’t he?”

Lan Wangji just blinked. Later, when he opened the door to the room, Wei Wuxian was nowhere to be found. ~Meanwhile in the town market ~ Wei Wuxian: “Yes, yes, give me that one. And that one scarf over there. Is that a lotus hair pin? Yes, give me that.” Shopkeeper: “Ah, young master, your wife is really lucky! The Eye of the World Ch 17-18

Disclaimer: this is my first read thru but I’ve watched the first 4 episodes of the show and been spoiled on some things. So… I’m going to lean into that. Enjoy figuring out what I know and what I think in know and what I don’t. Also s/x I add commentary when I edit.

Minor thing, my humble opinion. I get the sense from the show maybe that Two Rivers folks use Eyeless and elsewhere Fade is used. It’s a reversal that makes sense, Eyeless sounds more like a folk scary story than Fade -to me. Fade sounds like a name trying to distance itself from the terror the creature inspires

The Untamed, episode 39 - watching notes

How did this show manage to make me care for these characters in about one episode???

Xue Yang is 100 kinds of creepy

How does he disappear like that? That's a power we haven't seen on this show yet

This whole revenge plot is waaay too convoluted to be only about revenge

Ohoh ... this silence is too ominous

I love how A-Qing still has her rebellious streak, even in death

I am ... fascinated by Xue Yang's backstory. Like ... the guy is a goddamn sociopath

With the parallels of his backstory to wwx it's almost like he's wwx without his good heart 😥

So ... all of this is a direct consequence of what happened when they met them in the flashback?

But this isn't how "human affairs" should go or even normally do! Obviously, xue Yang isn't a reliable narrator at all, but all I want to do is wrap Xiao Xingchen in my arms and tell him that not all his good faith in humanity was misplaced 💔

"Stupid, naive, dumb idiots like you, who think the world is a better place just because they did something good!"

But it is!!!! The world on it's own, without humans, isn't inherently good or evil! It is what it is. Good or evil, that's up to us! In the face of the endless indifference of the universe, every act of kindness tips the scale towards a better world!

(Sorry, my atheism is showing)

And that's why I will always have infinitely more respect for the Xiao Xingchens of the world than the cruel and bitter Xue Yangs.

This is so weird. He honestly looks at Xiao Xingchen like he is a doting husband waiting for him to come home

And now it makes sense that he wanted wwx to restore his soul

And why his soul didn't want to be restored ... because he killed himself. He doesn't want to come back 😥

The way this looks ... that can't be an accident

So NOW he's grieving. Because he can't bring Xiao Xingchen back, can't control him. Xue Yang has such a screwed psychy, it's fascinating ... in a very disturbing way

Trying to parse that out, I feel like (and this is just my first impressionof thus and my very raw thoughts)... Xiao Xingchen and his kindness they did touch Xue Yang. But he was ill-equipped to deal with whatever feelings they stirred in him, because he had already been so twisted by the world and his own actions. And so he expressed his love the same way he expressed everything: with obsession and the desire to posses and control.

Honestly, I need some more time to really process this ...

They buried A Qing 😭

I'm listening to the new album by Nightwish (my favourite band) all the time right now and in their song "How's the heart?" Is this line "now there's one who came from me / A child of light, another tale" and I can't help but think of that right now! The whole song is about how it is worth it, going through the bleak times, fighting through your own darkness because there is light and love at the end of it. It's worth it to keep fighting, just so we can keep meeting others with love. And I can't help but think of little A Yuan/ Lan Sizuhi (and god, I'm almost bursting at the fact that I can write that line!!) As their manifestation of that love. Their "child of light" :')

And even with Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan ... there is this slight hopeful feeling of "we will meet again", if not in this life than in the next ...

Honestly, this ep was the most emotional one for me so far in terms of the whiplash from pain and joy it gave me, though I certainly cried harder at the Yunmeng massacre. The prevailing emotion is joy now, though. I am such a sucker for mismatched, found families and wangxian and their child of light isn't exactly that, I don't know what is. I'm going to sleep with a smile on my face now. 💚

okay so the song is supposed to come out 12pm china time right? well, ant anon has decided to FUCK SLEEP SCHEDULE (who needs it anyways) and i will stay up until it's 6am bcs that's the time it will come out where i live and i'll probably need to wait for someone to put it on youtube or tumblr. so i'm playing ghost of tsushima and TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THAT LAST MISSION IS SO THAT I CAN GET TO THIS OTHER ISLAND (also idk but my brain started to list similarities between lwj and jin and 🥺🥺😔 1. raised & trained by their uncle (i mean, ig trained by lqr?? partly maybe) 2. mothers died (of disease?? suicide?? who knows for madam lan? but jin's mother died of illness and the thing he missed the most is her voice calling his name and this man is a baby 🥺) 3. tradition. loyalty. honor. (do i need to specify?) 4. protecting the weak and doing the right thing (this also lines up with wwx) 5. fighting at the front in a war (jin doesn't really have a choice tho) 6. idk but like.... you can dress jin (partly) in white and that's cool 7. oh yeah dead fathers!! both of them got killed!!! just different circumstances..... also jin's dad seemed to be close to jin? idk we got a second of him and that was a flashback of his death scene 8. a lot of people seem to die in their life 9. Ahh I still havent started wolf but i miss seeing xiao zhan. Ahaha really? I actually liked it, the jumping scenes were a bit weird but that's how most period dramas are but I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the ep, especially looking forward to watching fei in action. I really love her!

I just finished episode 18 and WHAT THE HELL. T________T 16-18 were the most heart breaking episodes. Just WHAT THE HELL. What's worse is I KNOW that the angst isn't even done. ;_; Poor Wei Ling. On a happier note, yes, episodes 13 and 14 were the most ridiculously awesome episodes EVER. Between Wei Ling fussing over Lan Zhan to the FREAKING SONG. Omfg. Also, when Wei Ling backed up into the sword inside the turtle I was immediately like NOOOOOO.

Ohhh yes, it amazingly gets worse before it gets better is all I’ll say, my god. I’ll never get over the chaotic romantic energy of episode 13. Fanfic h/c trope, Wei Ying using stripping as a weapon, confessions in the dark, Wei Ying thinking Lan Zhan might be straight and Lan Xhan like “my crush is so damn dumb I want to kiss him in the moonlight”, Lan Zhan hands bleeding because he’s holding the cord so tightly to save Wei Ying, more h/c goodness but reversed, “I thought I wouldn’t see you again” and Lan Zhan opening his mouth to sing for his bae and a whole damn orchestra falls out while the show throws every damn romantic moment as a recap and the whole cast and crew are screaming at anyone who still thinks they’re straight, “THIS IS A ROMANCE. THEY ARE SINGING A ROMANTIC DUET” and sobbing because man they wished they could let them make out right now just as dramatic punctuation.
