Wheel of Time full series spoiler thoughts on TSR 6-10
A probably semi-regular weekly bonus to my reread blog, since sometimes you realize things on reread that just make you need to yell in a full spoiler space.
There is a world in which I could have loved Moiraine and Thom as a couple. It is not the version of the books that we got, where Moiraine is depowered and sops to Thom's ego as a test (ick) by offering to give up everything she's ever worked for (ICK) to be with him if he wants it. They're about to have their last meeting for 9 books and like, I see it, I see the setup, but also you don't get credit for this meager setup. It's definitely in my top 3 worst romances of the series, right up there with Siuan-Gareth and Mat-Tuon.
I would be 99% in favour of dropping the Trakand-Damodred connection entirely in the show, honestly. It doesn't get used, it doesn't go anywhere, it barely gets mentioned except when Rand needs to angst over having a brother out there somewhere. It's just trivia, and like, sure, fans love trivia, but it's also absolutely beside the point. It's like Slayer's dual resemblance to the Mantears and the Mandragorans, but we'll get THERE soon enough. (And by soon enough I mean in a few more weeks.)
Setting up the grain sale to Illian here was a brilliant little seed. And entirely forgettable because it's not the real focus of the scene.
And then right on the heels of that, telling Mat about the 'Finn doorway. "You know very well ter’angreal are not stories." Oh but these are.
Chapter 9 still annoys me, but seeing Egg and Avi becoming friends is always sweet.
And then Rand's stubborn inability to let women die, even when they want to, even when a man who'd done what they did would deserve it in his opinion. I'll try to keep my eye-rolling sighs to a minimum, at least in these posts.
I wonder what RJ was doing with the child death/attempted Healing scene. Like, obviously, setting the limit on the magic system. But he rarely did just one thing with any given moment, especially one so memorable and iconic. It feels like on top of that, it could be a setup for something to subvert the expectation, the way he subverted, lampshaded, inverted, and otherwise completely fucked with our expectations of damn near every other trope in the series. Just, thinky thoughts about what it might have been, what it relates to later on. Just setting up for breaking so many "impossible" barriers? But this one never is.
And y'know what, I'm gonna leave that all in place to show y'all how dense I can be because it only JUST occurred to me rereading it before queueing this up that of course it's setting up to contrast with the return of Aginor and Balthamel and Ishy and Lanfear. [forehead slap] In my defence I've only had about 5 hours of sleep and then a full day's activity on top of it on the day I'm assembling these last notes.

throwing this question into the ether, but what is the origin of the serpent rings in the wheel of time? have the aes sedai always worn them? are they only associated w the aes sedai, or did the aes sedai co-opt them?

The Wheel of Time
Okay, my TWOT peeps. I stared watching the Amazon series several months ago after completing the first book. As I watched it, I kept thinking, "What book are they following." Aside from the same names used, everything was so different. So I stopped watching it when they emerged from Shadar Logarth for several reasons. Well, I saw the trailer for season 2 and thought I would try again. I found myself continually saying "What the heck!" and "That's not in the book!" and "Why are you ruining Perrin's story?!" I eventually stopped when they started adding things that definitely weren't in the book. But like season 2 shows Rand going to the Waste with the Aiel, which doesn't happen until like book four, and these are not short books. I am also not a fan of nudity and with one episode I had to fast forward, but of course, Robert Jordan does have the women stripping down for absolutely EVERYTHING it seems, which is a HUGE annoyance with the books for me. And I also know that in the Waste it seems that everyone is naked, so Amazon is going to be drooling to put that in there.
However, I digress. Does any other reader of the TWOT series find it impossible to watch the Amazon series?
FYI: I am on book nine of the series, so I am making progress in finishing.

I honestly don't know why Lanfear looks like she's going to start signing some symphonic metal at any given moment but I don't care and I personally thing it's the best thing they've ever done

Friends! I forgot to tell you that I *finally* caved and bought the first The Wheel of Time book. I'm starting it later this week, and I'm genuinely beyond excited to get to know the characters and the world in a new way — and hopefully understand the show better when it returns for Season 3. I thought TWOT Season 2 was so great that I couldn't wait any longer to read the book(s), so I took a gift card from Christmas and treated myself to that first book. So, if I start posting about The Wheel of Time book(s), that's why. Get ready!

So I’ve gotten back into reading TGH and reached chapter uh… I’ll put that later. Anyway here’s the summary—
“They go to Stedding Tsofu to find a Waygate. Waygate is firmly blocked by Machin Shin. Their journey seems for naught. But at least we get more Loial lore, and learn Ogier women just arrange the marriages and tell the men who they are marrying. Mat -full cringe failboy he sometimes(often) is- says human men would never let a woman boss them around like that. Rand mutters about Mat being wrong. Everyone else presumable at least side eyes him. Because he is wrong. Verin is right there telling everyone what to do. Rand remembers the woman’s council bacually betrothing him to Egwene before he knew what was happening. Fun times. They realize they have to use a portal stone to get to Fain. The Ogier happily show them the portal stone nearby -anything is better then the Ways. The boys keep insisting they are not ta’veren or Dragons or Aiel anything like that. Everyone nods and then ignores that and talk about them being ta’veren and how they’ve basically got no choice but to live in their wake. Rand is reminded again he can in fact channel, in fact doing so with little resistance after being asked -possibly s first? He is also unnerved meeting several Aiel women. Because they tried to kill them and also well… damn does he look like them. Aka “The ever increasing eroding of Rand denial copium receives several serious blows in a few days.”
I’m currently mid Ch 37 “What Might Be”, portal stone icon I believe.
Oh! And just for fine to cover it… Also Fain delivered that Horn, Turok was like “you’re probable lies amuse me for now. Perhaps I will give you to the Empress. Let me describe the terribleness of the royal court. Nvm you’re way too eager about that.” And Fain is just internally grinning and steepling his fingers like “ah ha. Yes give me more information. Give me more access to your leaders. You play right into the plans I have made and am making right now. And will make in the future.” Hilarious.
also…
I’ve decided that Hurin is a lil bit of a dipshit simp. Yes he has sniffing powers. And a wife. And children. But he’s a Gilear if you will. Also probably brain mushed by ta’veren a bit. Selene didn’t show up! (Good) Oh and how deeply I am not looking forward to the parts of Mat featuring “a tale of his sad little misogyny even if it often makes him look foolish. Still a bit too cringe” -at least that’s my fear. We shall see.

Wheel of Time full series spoiler thoughts on TSR 11-20
A probably semi-regular weekly bonus to my reread blog, since sometimes you realize things on reread that just make you need to yell in a full spoiler space.
There's surely some kind of long form essay in comparing the sad bracelets/male a'dam to the use of flawed Callandor. Two women to control the flow while the man fuels it.
And besides that I want to yell about nearly every paragraph in chapter 11, honestly. The S'redit! The broken sa'angreal key, failing for Egwene, both because it's literally broken and narratively because she's not the one who's going to use it. The use of the "think and you will find" method in TAR. Just everything. Goddamn.
Faile and Perrin and Berelain. I'm just gonna go collapse in a corner for a nap. Oh wait, can't, duty calls. UGH.
Waves at Tuon, the character in the series who leaves me the most conflicted about where her arc goes and how much is left unfinished that I want to see addressed but simultaneously do not trust RJ to have addressed…
It is interesting that Mat dies and lives again twice, but they only mention it once. Did RJ plan for Mat to get caught up in the balefire in Caemlyn, or did he do that after the Rhuidean hanging didn't feel quite close enough?
Moiraine and Thom's one single, deep, honest, flirting conversation on the page before book 13. My eternal annoyance that this is all we got to justify that. Still, there's something amusing about "I killed your brother" serving as a courting gift.
I am not in the Androl Haters camp, even though he's purely a Sando creation, but I do wish we'd gotten to see more of Logain's leadership coming through in those last books. The viewing makes it sound so much more thrilling than it ends up being.
Siuan's so confident the Hall will accept her version of events. Oh, bless, you're about to tip the boat right over.
We don't ever really get a reason for Aiel hating to ride horses, do we? Like, we get the whole "never touch a sword" thing, but not that. Just a cultural quirk, I guess.
So begins "Elayne has an Electra complex about Thom". Don't pour one out, you'll need that.
Still, that also comes with the Sea Folk generally, which is great. I think they're underused but a delight to be around when they show up.
