You heard a distant scream grow louder, suddenly, Fuyuhiko sprung up from the ground and Kazuichi was rolling on the floor. Tears left his eyes, crying of laughter. As menacing as it was, it was the happiest you’d seen him. “Grow the fuck up, Kaz!,” you yelled, going to check on Fuyuhiko,“I-I’ll go with you, just promise me you won’t hurt anyone else. Kazuichi grumbled, but agreed. Before you could go, Hajime stopped you. “You don’t have to do this,” he reminded you,“What if he hurts you?”.

You walked away, looking back. “Wait for me,” you told them. “Come on!,” he said, grabbing your hand and running as if he were a child. He took you to a door, leading to a hallway. the crowd was buzzing with excitement, rainbows and bright colours everywhere. despite the utter eyestrain my poor head was subjected to, i was having a really good time! not because I’M gay or whatever!! i was there with komaeda is all, coz i wanted him to know i’m cool with it now we’re like buddies and whatever.

exceeept for when i lost him in the parade, a herd of drag kings and queens separating us, followed by tons of more people, until i was on opposite sides of the parade to him, probably coz of poor komaeda’s luck biting him in the arse at the worst of times.

but it was ok, because i was chatting to a girl wearing a pin with red and orange and white and pink on it, and she seemed really nice! i didn’t get to ask what her pin meant though,, she had blue hair and reminded me of that pop idol in the year below me at school,, i wonder if they’re sisters. she had a friend who was holding hands with her with black hair in two twirly ponytail-things that i recognised but didn’t know her name so just waved and kept talking in the hopes that i wouldn’t have to name the goth-looking girl.

i saw lots of different people during the parade today! it’s so cool how many people are happy to be themselves! it makes me feel happy to be near so many lgbt+ people— even though i’m not one of them! definitely not!!

i saw someone really pretty in the crowd with browny-blondey hair who i recognised after a while was that tech kid from the year below who sometimes turns up to my STEM club, she was wearing one of the few flags i recognised as a cape; the non binary flag! i wanted to talk to them and ask about it but i was worried that i’d look intrusive so didn’t approach,,

after a few hours it was becoming more and more obvious that i had completely lost komaeda, so i went wading through the crowd of rainbows and smiles in an attempt to find him. past tanaka’s friend hifumi; past miss sonia and miss ibuki, the latter plastered in neon paint like it was skin ointment; past leon, wearing a blue and pink and white flag and no shirt- god he’s so hot, he even has muscles from his baseball even though he’s rather lean— scrap passing him i was probably stuck there staring at him for a solid half hour before wiping away a small amount of drool over him— but NOT because i’m gay!!!!! he was just super hot,,, not in a gay way though! i can just appreciate beauty when i see it!

once i had given up on finding komaeda, a tap on my shoulder startled me into whipping my head around to look, straight in the eyes,,

at the most gorgeous person i’d ever seen, period. soft heterochromic eyes that filled my stomach butterflies; raven hair seeming so soft i wanted nothing more than to pet it for hours on end; and a face that belonged to none other than tanaka. fucking. gundham!! it was wearing a few pronoun pins so i read them and made a mental note before realising vamp was speaking to me

yet he didn’t get angry or sad at all! it smiled at me in a soft manner before asking, “i asked is something bothering you?” before asking another question, but not without a little hesitance - “are you here um alone? or are you- are you with someone?” to which i quickly replied,

“i’m here to support komaeda but uh i kinda lost him in the crowd and now i can’t find him” with a nervous laugh.

“ah, he does that a lot doesn’t he?”

we chatted absent mindedly for what felt like it could’ve been forever before tanaka offered to help me look for komaeda, so we started wading through the ocean of people, the masses of bodies forcing me to grab tanaka’s hand to keep me from losing vamp too. i swear, it was only because i didn’t wanna lose him though!! not because her hands were warm,, or soft,,, or fit perfectly into mine,,,,, not at all!!! i was just keeping vamp close!!

although i can’t help and say it was suuuper adorable when i saw dolls face go a faint pink as it hid its face in her scarf and mumbled something about his skin being poisonous, to which i couldn’t help but playfully coo, “guess i’ll have to fight the infection off for you~” which caused vamps face to heat up even more hehe it’s fun to fluster him, i know how touch starved she is (not in a gross way! get your mind out of the gutter kaz!!)

after a while, while everyone is starting to go home from the parade, we found komaeda finally, and at this point i was clinging to tanaka’s arm as if my life depends on it. coz i was REALLY scared of getting lost. not coz i’m gay. at all.

i spent the rest of the day with komaeda and tanaka, though i kept hold of tanaka’s hand until i was forced to let go to get us crisps. i felt kinda disappointed, like i was missing something without its hand in mine, but whatever i bet it’s just coz i’m just as touch started as doll!

we hung out at a park but there wasn’t room for all three of us on the swings so tanaka did something i never expected, vamp sat on my lap and we swung together on one swing.

whatever, he probably just thought i’d be comfier to sit with than komaeda.

at the end of the day, after komaeda had been gone for a while - apparently hajime needed to ask him about some homework? even though they’re not even in the same classes - tanaka greeted me goodbye by taking my hand and pressing into it a badge with a bluey-tealy flag on it, then doll kissed my hand and said “we should hang out again, my dark prince, i had a lovely time” with a warm smile, though i got the impression that next time komaeda wouldn’t be joining us. i also got the feeling that i’d be okay with that.

maybe i’m not as not-gay as i thought…

-Makoto is a basic bitch, always and forever, and we stan that -Taka looks like a Penguin and you cannot change my mind -Byakuya is just trying to look rich- -Mondo’s outfit is so extra i love it- he even added some probably temporary dye to his pompadour that was hard to see due to the lighting in the group pic -LEON! everyone was calling his fit ugly in the group pic and honestly i’m salty because he and i have the same sense of formal fashion. work it king! -Hifumi’s honestly suits him just fine, i was iffy when i saw it in the group pic but it doesn’t look too awful in full -Hiro..... buddy- i- i mean- what do i say??? it’s ugly as shit and really nice at the same time?? -Sayaka’s formal wear is a massive step up from the outfit she wears in her splash art- i never really liked that dress that much- even if it does have a cultural significance the design the picked felt cheap. But this one is really nice, and i dig it way more -Kirigiri looks pretty, it looked waaaay more purple in the group pic, but looking back the whole thing was over saturated for the lighting affects they did, so i shall forgive. she looks oddly nice in blue actually.  -AOI LOOKS LIKE A BETA FISH AND I’M LIVING FOR IT! GO QUEEN!! -Toko’s dress looks way better in full than i expected, because so much of it was covered up i kinda didn’t like it all that much in the group pic, but i’m really digging it now -QUEEN SAKURA! BEAUTIFUL!! A DAMN SUNSET OF A DRESS!!! i love seeing her indulge in being a gorgeous queen despite people’s remarks on her physique -Celeste! also beautiful, but girl are you a vampire?? the layers on that dress- and that’s a massive veil- she’s gotta be overheating in that thing.  -JUNKO! -Hajime’s outfit actually looks better in the group pic than here, i think it’s cause the yellow is more vibrant due to the saturation filter, so it stand out more -Nagito’s outfit is great honestly, i love how they put the shirt design on the sleeves, and i love the half-up hair, and the crooked bowtie- it’s great! -Twogami is a king, all he did was invert Byakua’s outfit and he just pulls it off so much better -Gundham’s is honestly underwhelming. I love the suspenders though -Teruteru’s outfit actually make him a bit cute. i’m about 80% sure the brown is suppose to be mud as to reference the fact that he’s characterized as a pig in more ways than one, but i’m choosing to call it a cola pattern ‘cause fuck you i’m going to be nice to him for once -Nekomaru’s suit is... it feels like a cursed amalgamation of a noir detective, a car sales men, a mobster, and a casino owner- and i just works so well on him -Fuyuhiko! i love it, fits him well, but the rolled up slacks are odd and kinda distracts me from the rest of the design- showing off some Bi pride there boss baby? -AKANE IS A DAMN QUEEN!! GOD PLEASE SHE COULD STRIKE ME DEAD IN THAT AND I’D THANK HER -Chiaki’s is simple, but it looks really nice on her -SONIA MY QUEEN! the oversaturation in the group pic did her dress dirty! i saw the blue originally and went “that isn’t her color”, but now seeing it without all the lighting crap she looks alot better.... and also a bit Elsa-ish -Hyoko’s in a lovely Kimono, but she’s always wearing pretty Kimonos, so it’s somewhat underwhelming compared to the rest -MAHIRU YOU SUMMER QUEEN! Mahiru has the best sense of fashion in the whole series imo, her wardrobe’s vibes make me so very happy. I grew up in a christian household (i’m not religious anymore btw) and use to be brought to services, and her dress gives me mad Easter Sunday Potluck nostalgia that i just can’t un-notice -Mikan looks too much like a hooker- i’m sorry, they really just went with the fan-service crap here and i don’t like it at all. Even if it wasn’t meant to be fan service, the dress looks tacky and has a shine on it that signifies it’s latex, so that’s just gotta be uncomfortable as hell- and for a clumsy character like her to try and survive a party in??? -IBUKI LOOKS LIKE FANCY RAVE COTTON CANDY!! THAT’S ALL!!! -Peko’s Kimono looks surprisingly nice on her, she wasn’t a character i’d assume to look good in a checker pattern but damn. i also appreciate how she still has the sword, bet- Fuyuhiko tired to convince her to leave it behind but failed

-Rantaro looks like a Used Car Salesmen. -KOKICHI MY BELOVED!!! i already voiced how much i adore his outfit when the group pic came out, so instead might i point out that he’s wearing high-water slacks and tall socks? it’s just as jarring as Fuyuhiko’s bi-slacks, but this is Kokichi so i feel like he did it on purpose. -Kiibo??? he dead ass changed his plating i-???? idk what i’m feeling towards it, but boy howdy am i feeling -GONTA!!! i love his suit, it’s out there in a good way, and i also love how he’s holding what looks like his casual coat. -Shuichi looks lovely in that suit, and i’ll never forgive everyone ever for saying he looked like a grandpa in it. It make him look a bit more Sherlock-esque and i love -3- -KORK IN A DRESS EVERYBODY MOVE!! i love how Androgynous his outfit is, both in gender and in time. like- is it feminine? masculine? modern? 1800′s england? who the fuck knows! -Ryoma looks good, but the fedora- who tf on the design staff decided to get cheeky?? eh- he’s vibing, doesn’t look too bad so long as you don’t hyperfixate on the pointy groin-stabber fedora -KAITO YOU SNAZZY GALAXY PATTERN SNORTING BASTARD! i swear he’s allergic to putting his right arm in it’s sleeve-. anywho, i love how even his dress jacket has a galaxy lining in it, i think it would have been funny if he was wearing galaxy dress shoes too but Maki would have chopped his dick off for that one -Kaede looks like her dress was inspired by one of those cinnamon peppermints- ya know the ones, they have the pink center and all that jazz? -Miu looks like she’s ready to hit up a casino in LA and honestly that’s such a good vibe! her skirt is a bit funky so it took me a hot sec to realize it was indeed a pencil skirt and not a fancy jumpsuit. -Tusmugi’s looks nice, i don’t have much else to say- kinda fitting considering her Plain Jane shtick -TENKO LOOKS LIKE SHE’S THIS CLOSE TO BREAKING OUT INTO A TAP DANCE AND I’M SO FUCKING HERE FOR IT!!! GO QUEEN!!!! -Kirumi is- well- i don’t go to Genshin Impact, but she looks like that one Genshin character, you know the one right? i think their name was a Starbucks drink size- they have a harp?? yeah -Maki’s dress is really pretty, it is a bit odd for her to wear that considering her character, but i can’t say she doesn’t rock it like the queen she is. -Himiko would be nicer without the transparent extra part- it make her looks like one of those half sphere popper things my friends terrorized me with in middle school. Other than that, you go you cute little magical girl you! -ANGIE OH MY FUCK!!! i love- i- dfj;adgad;jdgd!#2342nh;werkw??? i have no clue at this point what culture she’s suppose to be from, but that definitely looks like some traditional garb she’s got going on and holy crap is is pretty

Over all, i think the staff did a great job with this, i love a good lot of the outfits alot more than i though i would from the group pic. I do wish they would have added at least Komaru and Mukuro though- gimmy my queens yo!

Chiaki sat on a metal, backless bench in the lobby, resisting the urge to pull out her phone or her Switch.

Sonia said she’d be here soon. This was just an exercise in patience.

Chiaki picked out a pretty stellar spot for their second date. Sonia took her to an arcade for their first date, since she knew it was something Chiaki would like. So now, Chiaki wanted to return the favor by picking out a place she thought Sonia would enjoy.

“Chiaki!” She perked her head up and saw Sonia bouncing toward her in an adorable all-black ensemble.

She stood up from the bench as Sonia approached, knowing Sonia was a hugger. Her heart fluttered as Sonia’s arms wrapped around her.

“I have been anticipating this surprise all week!” Sonia clasped her hands together with a sparkle in her gorgeous ocean eyes, “Please reveal it! I cannot stand the suspense any longer!”

Chiaki nervously took Sonia’s hand, feeling how soft it was. “It’s this way, I think.”

Holding hands, Chiaki led Sonia through the mall, looking for the very obvious front gate of their destination

As soon as Sonia saw where they were going, she let out a delighted gasp. “A castle!? In a mall!?”

Well, by looking at its exterior, Chiaki could tell it was just an extension of the mall with a castle-themed exterior, but she didn’t want to ruin Sonia’s excitement.

“Yeah, we’re having dinner here, and there’s a jousting show. I thought you might like it cuz it’s all Medieval Themed,” Chiaki said with a smile

“Jousting?” Sonia squeezed Chiaki’s hand a little tighter, “Are there live horses in there?”

“Yeah, that’s what the website said, I think,” Chiaki could feel the heat rising to her face, “I already got our tickets, so let’s go inside.”

Sonia dragged Chiaki to the main entrance while Chiaki took the laminated cards out of the pocket of her jacket

After waiting in line for a few moments— Sonia’s hand not letting go of Chiaki— they were greeted by two staff members in green tunics. They asked to see their table cards, and Chiaki showed them the laminated papers.

The staff member closest to them said “Ah tonight you will be cheering for the Red Knight,” as they placed red paper crowns on each of their heads

Sonia couldn’t stop smiling. As they moved forward in line, they were greeted by a new staff member in a blue blouse, red skirt, and corset. They asked to see the numbers on Chiaki’s cards, and wrote it down. “Alright, good ladies, please step this way for a royal portrait with the Queen.”

Sonia turned to Chiaki, beaming. Chiaki swore she heard Sonia squeal under her breath as they approached a taller woman dressed in burgundy and gold finery.

Sonia asked the actress countless questions about her kingdom while Chiaki smiled at her. She is so cute, She couldn’t help but think

A staff member holding a camera directed everyone to stand together, and Sonia took hold of Chiaki’s hand again, bringing her close for the photo

Afterwards, Sonia wanted to see everything. With their fingers laced together, Sonia scoured every corner of the massive lobby with Chiaki. Chiaki watched as her date’s long blonde hair sashayed across her back as she was taken to all the spots to visit

Sonia especially liked the gift shop corner. She admired all the trinkets on display, and audibly gasped when she saw one corner that was just swords. “If only I could bring one back to campus!” She sighed

Chiaki felt overwhelmed imagining Sonia wielding a sword. That’s... very hot.

Sonia expressed her sheer wonder while they waited in the lobby, and Chiaki was hanging on every word

Once it was time to go in for the show, Sonia was too distracted by the colorful arena, so Chiaki paid attention to the staff members guiding them to their seats.

They didn’t let go of their hands as they walked down stairs toward red high tables, illuminated by red stage lights. They sat in the second row toward the aisle, Sonia barely able to contain herself in her seat

After some time, a server came by and explained how the evening would work to them and the other attendants in their section. They’d be served a four-course meal (with no untensils) while they watch the knights compete in a tournament.

“Chiaki, thank you so much,” Sonia took Chiaki’s arm and leaned in close, “This is so exciting!”

Chiaki took a chance. There’s no way this could backfire. She kissed Sonia on the cheek. “It’s no problem.”

Sonia was smiling coyly when Chiaki pulled away. God, she’s so cute. The red lights above them made her look like her entire face was flushed. Reds and pinks look nice on her.

Once the show started, Chiaki had trouble paying attention. Her focus was on Sonia, who was completely absorbed in the fiction.

And Chiaki noticed every little thing Sonia did.

Her eyes sparkled when she saw the Queen and her knights on horseback

She applauded with glee every chance she got

She clutched Chiaki’s arm once again when the host of the show announced the arrival of a trained falcon, and leaned her head on Chiaki’s shoulder as the bird flew around the arena

During the games portion, whenever the Red Knight got enough points, he would be rewarded with flowers from the Queen. Sonia’s joy must have been noticeable, because at one point, the knight tossed carnations toward them. Chiaki, using her honed reflexes, made sure to catch it, and placed it behind Sonia’s ear.

She sighed as she rested her head on Chiaki again while the ‘Master of Horse’ performed various tricks

When the fighting began, Chiaki was surprised by how much passion Sonia placed in cheering. The knights had elaborate combat choreography, and Sonia was at the edge of her seat.

The Red Knight didn’t win, unfortunately. The Blue Knight was victorious instead. But that didn’t ruin Sonia’s fun.

By the time they made it on the bus to head back to campus, Sonia seemed to have worn herself out. Normally it’s Chiaki who’s falling asleep at the drop of a dime, but she held on to Sonia’s bag of souvenirs (and her hand), letting her rest on the ride back home.

(Context: Kazuichi and Gundham have agreed to a “Marriage at first sight” arrangement, this will be the actual wedding)

Kazuichi: God, why did you guys convince me to do this?!? He’s a complete stranger, and who knows if he’s actually even remotely as good as he says he is.

Hajime: Dude, calm down. The Program has a great track record for their marriages.

Kazuichi: That’s easy for you to say, Nagito looks at you like you hung the moon! Do you think I’ve EVER been that lucky with my relationships?!

(Kazuichi’s friends all have flashbacks to Kazuichi’s various romantic endeavors all crashing and burning from the boyfriend of 2 months who bet a night with Kazuichi on a card game and lost [thankfully, he lost to Celestia, who just made Kazuichi be her manservant for the night]; to the boyfriend of less than a week who Chihiro had to slap in the face when he wouldn’t take “no” for an answer; to even the longest-lasting boyfriend of 3 years who Kazuichi had finally gotten the guts to ask about spending his heat together for the first time and then after agreeing, he tried to sabotage Kazuichi’s birth control to get him pregnant and force him to stay, which thankfully didn’t work)

Hajime: Well, no. BUT, we’ve already had a talk with the groom and he’s a great guy! C’ mon, Fuyuhiko, tell him.

Fuyuhiko: (turns from suspiciously searching the outside of the hallway for traps) What? Oh, yeah, big goth alpha, scar over his eye, hamsters living in his scarf that he’s wearing to his own wedding? Yeah, he seems like your type.

Kazuichi: (goes from scared to blank) W-wait. He-he has hamsters… pfft… l-living in his scarf? (he starts laughing) hahaha haha, he-he has hahaha- hamsters in his scarf?!?

(Cut to Gundham, who’s worriedly waiting outside the main room of the shrine with his small group)

Sonia: Gundham, don’t worry! I’m sure that he’s a lovely omega.

Then Gundham lifts his veil and he can’t focus either because damn, he’s gorgeous!! And they’re going to be married to this guy!!!)

My Other Favorite Songs of 2019

This is a list for all of my favorite songs of the year that aren’t on my album of EP of the year list. (Read my top albums and EPs of the year lists if you want some context.) However, songs from albums that were on my rapid-fire review list are fare game. That’s enough preamble, this list is in no particular order (except, of course, for the final song.)

affection by BETWEEN FRIENDS: This was my favorite song off of BETWEEN FRIENDS’s debut EP from this year, we just need some time together. This is the perfect swoony, dreamy pop song that was my relaxing Summer jam. I love the way the melody on the hook is ushered in with a churning bass in the pre-chorus and washes over me with each listen. 

trevi fountain by Leo Kalyan: Leo Kalyan is one of my favorite, (and most underrated) dream pop artists, always able to capture a sense of otherwordly bliss in his music. If there was one word I had to use to describe this song, it would be romantic. This song feels purely, dizzyingly, head-over-heels in love, and it was on repeat for me all throughout Valentine’s Day. 

Numb by Baker Grace: One of the most instantly catchy songs of the year. Chopped-up vocals don’t always work for me, but here they combine with the punchy production in such a way that they contribute to the “over-it” attitude of the song. God, what a bop. 

Clumsy Love by Thelma Plum: This melancholy love song traipsed its way right into my heart as soon as I heard it. The light tambourines, bubbly guitar, and upbeat melody give this song a sunny feel that contrasts nicely with Thelma Plum’s heartbroken lyrics and delivery. 

Love You For A Long Time by Maggie Rogers: If more people used that reverb-layered-vocal-chorus-of-angels effect in their music, then I would like that very much, because so far Miss Maggie Rogers has used it twice, (on this and “Retrograde”) and it has made those songs some of my favorites from her. This sweet, upbeat track was a surprising single after the album, and I swear I listened to it on a loop for a week straight. I’m going to love this song for a long time. 

Karma by MARINA: This is probably my favorite song off of Love + Fear, or at least it was the song that I returned to the most as the year went on. The icy backing vocals and Spanish guitars give the track a cool and refreshing feel. MARINA’s performance is, as always, gorgeous, her rich vocals skating over the frosty soundscape with grace and a hint of sarcasm. 

Gone by Charli XCX ft. Christine and the Queens: One word: BOP. I seriously considered ending the write-up there, but I’ll also mention that Charli and Chris have amazing vocal chemistry, the lyrics about being socially awkward are seriously relatable, and the bass is sick. Also, Chris’s lines in French? Iconic. Even the instrumental breakdown at the end has grown on me. 

Death By A Thousand Cuts by Taylor Swift: This ended up being my favorite song off Lover, (with “Cruel Summer” taking a close second.) I am obsessed with the sparkly production, (my boy Jack Antanoff, once again, went antanOFF,) especially those flitting, echo-y vocal samples that start the track out and the glittering keys that dance under the verses. Along with that, Swift’s writing is sharp, recounting a breakup in a specific yet relatable way.  

make up by Ariana Grande: This was the first non-single off of thank u, next that I really loved. I think it’s due to the fun, cheeky energy. The beat perfectly balances tense plucked bass, chimes, and vintage-leaning, pitch-shifted backing vocals, I especially love those “hey-hey-hey”s that pepper the chorus. This is a great song to get ready for a party to.

Don’t Say by Robinson: I didn’t realize how much I missed Robinson until she came back with this immaculate synthpop banger of a breakup song. The upbeat production on this make it fun and danceable, but Robinson’s delivery makes it a fireball of emotion as well. She’s supposedly dropping a new EP soon, and I can’t wait. 

Live Forever by Nasty Cherry: Nasty Cherry were one of the most fascinating bands to emerge this year, backed by Charli XCX and a Netflix docuseries. Now I don’t care about all that so long as the music was good, and you know what? They’ve got some damn good songs, and I’m a sucker for all-women bands. This song edged out the band’s debut single “Win” for the list. The harmonies on the chorus, bright guitars, and all-around nostalgic feel of this song made this an instant pop-rock jam in my book. 

Blinding Lights by The Weeknd: I’ve always found The Weeknd’s music to be most engaging when it sounds like he’s having fun, like in “Can’t Feel My Face.” This song is an absolute jam, with an instrumental that sounds like it was ripped right from the 80′s, (but it literally was though, it samples “Take on Me” by a-ha,”) and one of the most instantly likable choruses I’ve heard in a while. 

Playing Games by Anna Of The North: This is just a total jam that I couldn’t stop playing at the end of the Summer. I love the light guitars on the verses and the smooth, relaxed-yet-upbeat feel. It’s probably my favorite song off of Dream Girl. 

Sanctuary by Joji: Joji’s music has always been hit or miss for me, but this song is definitely a hit. The dreamy, spacey atmosphere built up by the spacious synths and Joji’s laid-back delivery instantly puts me at ease. 

Soaked by BENEE: The song that introduced me to BENEE also ended up being my favorite from her. The jaunty, casual feel of this song make it the ultimate laid-back indie pop tune. Both of BENEE’s EPs from this year, FIRE ON MARZZ and STELLA & STEVE are quirky listens that are worth your time. 

The King by Conan Gray: 2019 saw Conan Gray taking his lyricism into a more heartbroken and sarcastic direction, which was an interested evolution to witness. Out of all the singles that Conan Gray dropped throughout the course of the year, this one is my favorite. I love the way the chorus rushes through me with every new listen, Conan’s delivery is so dang breezy. 

Twist by Dizzy: I swear Dizzy have nostalgic melancholy perfected into a science. This song has one of my favorite choruses of the year, featuring lyrics that are heart-twisting (ha, but no really,) and a gentle yet earnest delivery from frontwoman Katie Munshaw. Whenever I hear this I feel sad in a reflective, smiling-with-a-single-tear-rolling-down-my-cheek kind of way.

Joyride by SONIA: I came across this on a Spotify New Music Friday one week and clicked on it just for kicks and it has been one of my favorite finds of the year. SONIA has one of those smoky, sensual voices that I can’t help but love, and her performance paired with the yearning lyrics make for a song that is sorrowful yet romantic at the same time. 

You Sexy Thing by Zella Day: And the award for comeback of the year goes to Zella Day, whose music I fell in love with back in 2016 and have been patiently awaiting for new content from since. She hinted at dropping new music last December, and boy was this worth the wait. This cover of the 1975 release by Hot Chocolate is retro, playful, and, what else? Sexy. I hope to hear more from Ms. Day in the near future, but until then, I will have this, Kicker, and the Man On The Moon/Hunnie Pie single on a continuous loop. 

Red by Lucy Daydream: I found this song in my Spotify Discovery Weekly back in April, and what a fun find it was. This song is a relaxing indie pop bop with inexplicable replay value. I loved this so much that I even checked out Lucy Daydream’s album from this year, Awake & Dreaming, and while the rest of the album didn’t quite match this song in my opinion, I still thought it was a nice listen. I’m definitely keeping Lucy Daydream on my radar going into the future.  

What About Love by BANKS: As I mentioned on my Rapid-Fire Reviews list, I wasn’t all that into III. However, there were some songs on it that I really latched onto, and this was one of them. This song conveys so much raw emotion, with one of BANKS’s most impassioned performances on the whole album. I love the use of autotune, quivering strings, sparse keys, and fluttering vocal samples to create an isolated yet overwhelming soundscape, (it’s amazing with headphones on.) Also, every lyric in this hits like a gut punch. 

Harmony Hall by Vampire Weekend: I thought that I liked this song, but I guess I love this song, because it ended up being my fifth most listened to song of 2019? There’s definitely a reason for that, this song is so instantly likable, with a memorable guitar line, bright pianos, and one of the most anthemic choruses of the year. 

Alligator by Of Monsters and Men: What a smash debut single this was, I was hooked from the very first chord. The energy in this song is unmatched, it has a sense of propulsive power that always hypes me up. The thin layers of distortion and reverb over the guitars and Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir’s voice give this song a sense of otherworldly eeriness that I really enjoy. 

Blown to Bits by Charly Bliss: This song sounds like the jittery feeling I get after drinking caffeine in the best kind of way, if that makes any kind of sense. The buzzy guitars, vocal layering, and overall electric energy present on this track made it an instant favorite off of Charly Bliss’s album from this year Young Enough. Also the lyrics are weirdly relatable as they recount feelings of uncertainty and nostalgia, and Eva Hendricks delivers them with firepower. 

House Of Glass by Cage The Elephant: This is just a banger through and through, and the fact that the opening riff is reminiscent of “Come A Little Closer” doesn’t hurt either. The verses maintain a nice sense of tension, with Matt Schultz delivering the lyrics in a near whisper. But once that chorus kicks in, it’s official, I have no choice but to become a swaggering badass. 

still feel by half•alive: This was my first favorite song of the year, (and I know it was technically a single from last year, but the album dropped this year, so I’m counting it,) I remember playing this on a loop all throughout January. And you know what? It hasn’t faded on me in the slightest, this is still a banger through and through. The bass groove, the snaps, that little chime that comes at the end of the prechorus, it makes for one hell of a buildup. And once that chorus hits I have no choice but to groove off into the galaxy.

In the Afternoon by MGMT: Another comeback that made this year amazing! Not only are MGMT back with a new single, but they’re also independent now, which inspired my best pun of the year. This song slams, it’s filled with creepy atmosphere but by the end you’ll be dancing and singing along. Needless to say, I’m hyped to see what they bring into the new year.

My Favorite Fish by Gus Dapperton: The melody on this chorus is so catchy, once you hear it it will not leave your head. I also love the vibe of this song, it’s very relaxed and nonchalant in its delivery. I reckon it’d be a nice song to take a long, sunset walk on the beach to. 

Little Trouble by Better Oblivion Community Center: Better Oblivion Community Center, the collaboration project of Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, put out a lot of great music this year. I was torn between this and “Dylan Thomas” to make the list, but ultimately picked this one because its energy, built up by squealing electric guitars and shuffling drums, is so upbeat, and over the course of the year it never failed to put a smile on my face.

Can’t Buy Happiness by Tash Sultana: Tash Sultana has always been a musician I’ve tended to admire for their talent from afar, never returning to their music all that often. This song, however, broke that pattern with its hypnotically beautiful simplicity. The gentle guitars that open this track blossom into a lush soundscape during each chorus, studded with grandiose synths, light cymbals, and Tash Sultana’s larger-than-life performance. 

Fucking Money Man by ROSALÍA: I’m including both songs on this single release because they’re equally brilliant. “Milionària” is a lively, upbeat track that relishes in opulence, peppered with the playful refrain of “fucking money man” and snappy drums. The tone switches right after with the haunting ballad “Dio$ No$ Libre Del Dinero,” which warns of the dangers of greed. 

Everybody Loves You by SOAK: The way the narrative on this song unfold as the track progresses is just beautiful. I don’t want to go too in depth, because I feel like it’s someone a person should experience without knowing anything prior. Let’s just say that this was a song I came back to whenever I was feeling emo, and the way it blossoms into brightness always has a way of making me feel better whenever I’m down. 

Rylan by The National: So The National have been around for literal decades but I just discovered them this year, loving the song “I’ll Still Destroy You” off of Sleep Well Beast especially. However, I also really enjoyed this song, with its breezy rock sound and melancholy lyrical narrative. The ghostly backing vocals that inhabit the mix send shivers down my spine. Also, the bridge. Just, everything about the bridge. 

Summer Girl by HAIM: This breezy, chill tune was perfect for those long, relaxed days in August where the afternoons drag on until 9:00pm. It reminds me of “Walk on the Wild Side” by Lou Reed, but a bit jazzier, with the saxophone and the playful “doo doo doo” refrain. I aspire to the levels of cool that HAIM have achieved. I know I’ll never reach it, but I still aspire to it.

cellophane by FKA Twigs: If there was any one quality that I would point to in order to describe why this song is so good, it would be its build in dynamics. This song starts out as sounding so fragile it could shatter at any second, which Twigs’s vocals barely rising above a whisper and backed in gentle murmurs and light pianos. However, as the sharper synths slither in and her voice gets more powerful, the sound builds to a gorgeous and jaw-dropping finale that never loses any of its emotion for a second. 

Barefoot In The Park by James Blake ft. ROSALÍA: This song sounds like running through a forest while alien lights flash overhead. The ambiance is romantic and slightly chilling, made up of light marimbas, siren-like vocal samples, and whispering synths. I initially listened to this song because of ROSALÍA, but I ended up loving it so much that I checked out James Blake’s album from this year, Assume Form, too. 

Bags by Clairo: Clairo’s debut album Immunity was a beautiful display of emotion and subtlety, and this was my favorite song off of that project. The production here is sweet and sorrowful, with flitting guitars and light drums, and Clairo’s lyrics and performance match perfectly. Everything about this communicates reserved, tender pining, (are y’all sensing a theme on this list?) It makes me go absolutely bananas every time I hear it.

Get Well by Donna Missal: Y’all know I’ll take any chance to talk about my queen Donna Missal. She released two singles this year, this and the excellent R&B slow-burner “You Burned Me,” but I had to pick this one for the list. Not only did this drop on Valentine’s Day, but I love how restrained and delicate this song is, both in its simple production and in Donna’s bordering-on-fragile delivery. 

Falling by Harry Styles: This turned out to be my favorite song off of Fine Line. (My rapid-fire review for that album: pretty good, but a bit bland, and I missed the rock edge of Harry’s debut.) Still, this is a stunner if there ever was one. I’m just a sucker for a regretful love song with a bare yet effective instrumental and emotive vocals. 

I Lost a Friend by FINNEAS: I’ve spoken multiple times about how I love the way this song builds throughout its runtime. This song starts out with a simple guitar line and slowly adds elements like distortion, flutes, and bass to communicate the emotional intensity in the lyrics. FINNEAS is a fascinating performer and producer, both in his work and with others, and I can’t wait to see what he does in the future. 

Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten: This year I’ve been thinking a lot about the future, and one of the ways I would sate my anxieties about uncertainties to come would be through music, (I don’t know if that was apparent from many of my picks on this list.) No song better described the whirlwind of emotions ripping through me than this one. Sharon Van Etten’s take on giving advice to her younger self served as a comforting voice of reason to me throughout the year. Her performance here is assuring yet slightly concerned, nostalgic and yet tinged with regret. This almost sounds like a lost Stevie Nicks song, with a propulsive build of guitars, unrestrained synths dancing throughout the mix, and a chorus that I want to scream out the window of a car speeding down a highway. I absolutely adore it. 

I Dare You by The Regrettes: If you aren’t surprised, then I’m not surprised. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned before that this is my song of the year, hands down. If “Seventeen” was the song that articulated all of my anxieties throughout the year, then “I Dare You” was the song that provided a reprieve from them. This song feels timeless, like it could’ve come out during a slew of decades, and yet it sounds modern as well. Every detail of the instrumental seems perfectly designed to form the most catchy and likable song ever created, from the light snares, to the “oohs” in the prechorus, to the colorful guitars. Also, can we talk about how adorable the lyrics are? They perfectly describe the flurry of feeling that come with a crush, from “you’re the one that brings the sun” to “there's a look that you give me, a switch / and my filter melts, and the words just slip.” Not only was this my most-listened to song this year, but I can’t think of a piece of music this year that made me happier every time I returned to it. Also, the music video was just as cute as the song was.

Sonic Underground Retrospective Episode 4: Wedding Bell Blues

Hoo boy, this episode was…something. Let’s not waste any time, because this is going to be a long one, folks.

 'Queen Aleena here’? Interesting. Perhaps the narration is Aleena's diary or log entries?

But why would he need that? He already rules Mobotropolis, why would being King make any difference over being a dictator?

Has Netflix misordered the episodes or was there a time skip? Where the fuck did this van come from. Also, if the three of you are wanted criminals, why the hell do you have your logo painted on the side of the van?

The voice acting in this episode is a little hit and miss. They really should’ve had separate VAs for the triplets because you can tell sometimes that Jaleel has difficulties switching between them. Seriously, they have separate voice actors when singing I don’t get why they couldn’t have brought two new actors in for Sonia and Manic.

"to be expected from the lower classes"!? WTF Sonia? I've been singing your praises in your profile sheet about how understanding you are when it comes to your brothers’ upbringings then you say THAT? Please tell me this is supposed to be banter and I’m just misinterpreting it.

Efficient communications system, Robotnik. Go ahead and destroy your city’s roads.

Ha, but actually though, I did laugh at this line.

You don’t need to actually pay for it though, Robotnik. You’re a dictator, just threaten your wedding staff with roboticization if they don’t comply.

Again, I want to point out how gorgeous some of the background art is.

No, ‘where the fuck have you been’, ‘Lady Windermere has been roboticized’, ‘Robotnik's after you’ or anything like that, Bartleby? Just a hello?

Also, I realize that I’ve been avoiding talking about Bartleby for a while now, as he also briefly appeared in episodes 1 and 3, but I wanted to talk about him now since he has a bigger role this episode.

I remember hating Bartleby when I watched the show as a kid, just really viewing him as an annoying posh twat. But re-watching now I’m older has made me appreciate his “I don’t give a fuck about anyone but myself attitude.” He does whatever makes him most comfortable. Avoid get roboticized? Pay Robotnik. Possibly get laid? Help the freedom fighters.

It’s refreshing to see someone who is neutral in a story about a conflict like this.

So, Bartleby, how exactly do you know that Sonia is the long-lost daughter of the dethroned Queen Aleena?

Why’d you let her in then, if you know she’s a wanted criminal. You saw last episode what happened to Lady Windermere.

You’ve never met Sonic or Manic, how do you about them, Bartleby?

Interesting differences here. Manic steals not because of greed, but either it’s how he stays alive or in this case, he seems to genuinely want to help the resistance. Also, I wonder why Sonic is against stolen goods for funding? Strong morality I guess? I need to explore this.

Sleet and Dingo are bounty hunters, unless they’re famous or something, how the fuck do you know them? How do you know anything, Bartleby?

You absolute fucking idiots. THE HEDGEHOGS ARE RIGHT THERE. The best bounty hunters in Mobius, people.

I think the best part about the songs in this show is Sonic's singing VA. His voice has this really nice slightly raspy quality to it.

Hold on a second, here Sonia’s upper torso is entirely skin tone, but in her normal design, her arms are pink. 

And then here, her legs are skin tone as well? What the hell is up with your design, Sonia?

You ok, Sonia? Got a bit of a thousand-yard stare there. I swear this isn’t an in-between, she holds that pose/expression for a solid couple of seconds

Wait. I just realised the music playing here is a remix of the main theme. Nice.

How exactly do you know Sonic likes chili dogs? I mean, sure. The audience knows because it’s one of Sonic’s famous character traits, but Sleet wasn’t present for any occasion that Sonic’s eaten chili dogs.

Also, isn't this the first time Dingo's used his shapeshifting abilities? Not only is this never explained, it came right out of the fucking blue. Also, random detail- I thought Dingo’s transformations were supposed to stay orange.

Sonic, you are as much of an idiot as those two earlier. You've seen Sleet before, you know what he looks like, WHY DONT YOU RECOGNISE HIM?

Yeaaahhh...that’s not Aleena. It seems that Sonia is also holding the idiot ball today.

Why on earth is this episode 4? A set-up like this could’ve been used for the finale.

Ok, I retract my statement on how Sleet and Dingo are never punished, but c'mon, that was a monumental fuck-up. Roboticize them. They’ll be a thousand times more useful to you then.

 So...yeah. One of the poorer episodes so far, everyone was an idiot, Bartleby must be omnipresent because he knows things he shouldn’t, a billion things are left unexplained, and with the exception of a few funny lines, there was no real character development to salvage this episode.

Let’s stay optimistic for next week, shall we?

Happy Monday to all you beautiful souls! I have a very special post to share with you today and it’s all because of how touched I was after attending an ‘Ahh-Mazing’ brunch last weekend. Myself, as well as several other powerful and inspiring women were invited to an exclusive Opulence Brunch at the luxurious Iberostar Grande Hotel by Cortia Bingham, C.E.O of We Inspire Ltd. The brunch was the official kick-off event to commemorate the 2nd staging of We Inspire Women Workshop & Brunch slated for August 26th & 27th in Kingston, at the Courtleigh Auditorium & The Jamaica Pegasus, respectively.

When I received the invite from Cortia to attend this brunch I was apprehensive at first. Mostly because I was intimidated by the women who I would be sharing a room with. Strong willed, powerful women of several great accomplishments while I felt I had nothing much to offer and share in return but my presence. I don’t particularly like feeling vulnerable and knowing I would be sharing a table with 10+ women made me feel very vulnerable. So like always, I asked for a plus one so I could have my mother by my side to help ease my nervousness.

On the actual day of the brunch butterflies filled my stomach and all I wanted to do was to back out. But with a very much needed push from my mom, my best friend and my biggest motivator, we both got dressed and headed out to the Opulence Brunch. When we arrived in the dining hall at the Iberostar Grand Hotel we were greeted with champagne, mimosas and blueberry fruit smoothies. As I took both a mimosa and fruit smoothie from the waiter I laid eyes on the impressive spread of hors’ d oeuvres on the table where we would all be seated. The vibrant table setting was definitely a feast for the eyes and it left us sitting with anticipation for the delicious food to come.

After gracing the table and welcoming everyone, Cortia started by mentioning that we were invited to her brunch not by chance but because we were meant to be there. She told us she was led by God to call each and everyone of us present at her Opulence brunch. At that moment in time, I wasn’t quite convinced but by the ending of the brunch I understood exactly why I was there. I was meant to be there…

After devouring a very delectable main course, Cortia had each person at the table share who they were by using the words ‘I Am…’ Once again, I was struck by nervousness but somehow I felt more than capable of sharing a few words of who I was with such beautiful, spirited women. Cortia made it clear to us how important it was for us to know that no one can define who we are as long as we know who we are and who we aspire to be.

And so the room went silent and one by one, we each proudly introduced who we were and who we aspired to be. At the end of this activity it was clear to me that I made the best decision ever to attend this brunch. I was filled spiritually, emotionally and physically (from all the amazing food). I sat in a room among 15 other women and for the first time in years I did not feel judged. Though we knew little of each other, I felt love, peace, camaraderie and acceptance.

The short time I spent with these ladies, I was left in awe at how inspired I felt. I drove home that evening feeling like I had a much greater purpose in life. By the time I made it to my room, I felt overwhelmed with emotions. Cortia presented an opportunity for me to sit amongst some very influential women and it reminded why I need to step outside of my comfort zone and how much more of myself I need to share. I have some soul searching to do, and perhaps you do too. I urge you all to hold yourselves accountable for what you say about yourselves from now on and when you have some free time say out loud who you are, starting with the words ‘I Am..’ Talk Soon.
