Arthur died believing that Merlin would at some point die too. He never knew that Merlin was immortal.
Spoilers btw for The Last of Us 01x07, but that fucking episode destroyed me and reminded me so much of our boys. It's literally them.

I think what really gets to me with the finale is that Merlin was so close to getting Arthur to the lake. Yet, there was no plan beyond that. It's like even if they did get there, who knows if anything would have happened.
The idea that there was still more tragedy awaiting even if they made it, that yeah despite all of Merlin’s magic, he couldn't save Arthur's life.
It was always the possibility of the Sidhe, but there was no guarantee. It was all hope from the start, endless hope that failed them in the end.
Because well, it was always supposed to happen like this anyway... Arthur was meant to die so he could rise again, there was no alternative

arthur / guenevere is compelling because it brings that arranged marriage flavor of "do i love you out of duty or of my own free will?" guenevere / lancelot is compelling because giving into their attraction not only betrays a man they both love, but inherently taints the chivalrous and dutiful qualities they love in one another. arthur / lancelot is compelling because nothing fucks harder than "i pledge my life to you." and arthur / guenevere / lancelot is compelling because it wouldn't change the ending.

#17 of random merlin prompts:
Canon Divergence where Arthur finds out that he won’t ever be able to have children of his own. It’s the same predicament that caused his father to turn to magic, the very one that ultimately caused his mothers death and started the reign of terror against magic.
Arthur knows he can’t repeat his father’s mistakes, so he vows never to have children, knowing he needs another way to secure an heir. But his heart breaks a little when he first starts courting Guinevere and she speaks of children and family and of dreams that he won’t ever be able to fulfill for her. He loves her too much to rob her of the life she deserves and ends the courtship amicably.
There isn’t anyone after her, not really, so he vows to give his all to Camelot, be the very best King his people deserve and one day find a successor worthy of the country he is rebuilding.
And of course, there is Merlin, always by his side. In the end, he is everything Arthur really needs.

It’s only tragic because it was once beautiful. It was beautiful and brief. For all the time on the earth and for every moment of their lives. It was barely enough time to sigh in content before it was gone. Taken. In the most cruelest of ways.
But for that moment…
The birds sang a little longer. And the breeze blew a little softer. Their laugh echoed through the walls. And the sun warmed them through it all. Maybe Orpheus will always look back. Maybe Merlin can never save his king. And maybe Romeo and Juliet can never be more than star-crossed lovers. Maybe none of them can escape the cruel caress of fate as their destiny comes too soon.
But for the briefest of moments. Everything is okay. And I’m still holding on to you.

And if you fight, ill fight.
It doesn't matter, now it's all gone.
I've got my mind on you.
I've got my mind on you.
I've got my eye on you.
I've got my eye on you.

Season 1 episode 1 of Merlin is just sad.
The scene after Merlin and Arthur fight(flirt) and they go back to the room Gaius is yelling at Merlin for using his magic in public and Merlin is yelling back that he’s nothing without his magic and then a little later he asks Gaius if his magic made him a monster.
And that just really hit me hard because Merlin for all 5 seasons thought that he might be the monster because he’s seen magic be evil so whose to say his isn’t. And ontop of that he’s living in Camelot so he constantly is see magic user killed and the overall idea of magic as something that needs to remain hidden.
Again and again Merlin saves Arthur using magic and then listen to Arthur thank him for showing him how terrible magic is.
And I love this because for a lot of people this supports the queer allegory as well. Hating something you can’t change because you were born with it.
Idk I’m just rewatching it and that hit.

man,,, i’m so traumatized from merlin having lancelot and uther’s death happen in back-to-back episodes. not that i actually cared about uther in the way i did lancelot but like. still. that’s too depressing and too much for the main characters to go through in such a short amount of time.

When Lancelot comes to Camelot, he doesn't expect to meet Merlin. To be fair, he didn't expect anything that happened after either.
Gaius: perhaps you don't need to forge his papers that much
Merlin: and why is that?
Gaius: you could just use your own title
Merlin: my what?
....
Because Lancelot proves not to have magic, the sigil is perfect because it's real (except the name), he is now accepted in Camelot as Sir Lancelot, son of the last Dragonlord, Balinor.
(Uther is relieved, although it was a struggle to convince him of Lancelot's loyalties and convictions)
It's awesome, because Lancelot can flee after he covers Merlin's attempts to save Camelot from the dragon. And Arthur still gets to question magic.
Arthur: what's it like... Having a father like that?
Lancelot: I don't know. I've never met him. My mother remarried and never told me until recently.
Arthur: it doesn't bother you that he is an exile?
Lancelot: .... *Sad for Merlin*
Lancelot: a little. But I have faith in the Kings decision
....
Later
Arthur: Lancelot, I'm so sorry. Balinor died in Merlin's arms. I wish you could have met.
Arthur: and.... I also must tell you, you might have inherited his powers. So you and I have to face the dragon together
Lancelot: *pales*... Yeah... Sure, sure, certainly
Lancelot: MERLIN!!!
Maybe eventually Arthur learns that the papers were forged and it's a cover to protect Merlin and his magic and Arthur is shooketh
