Back Cover to AI Art S2E12 - Ascendancy
Older video games were notorious for back cover descriptions that have nothing to do with the game so let's see what a text-to-image generator makes of these descriptions. Season 2 sees an increase in art creations for each game up from 1 in the first season to 6 for the second season
1. Intro - 00:00
2. Back Cover and Text Description - 00:10
3. Creation 1 - 00:30
4. Creation 2 - 00:50
5. Creation 3 - 01:10
6. Creation 4 - 01:30
7. Creation 5 - 01:50
8. Creation 6 - 02:10
9. Outro – 02:30
Although the 4X genre has been around since the 70s with Empire and Galactic Empire, it was not until the 90s that the genre started to really kick off with games like Sid Meier's Civilization, Master of Orion and Imperium Galactica.
Ascendency was one of these titles a sci-fi-themed 4x strategy game, released on DOS in 1995. The game was developed by Logic Factory, Inc. a short-lived developer from Austin, Texas, with The Tone Rebellion from 1997 was the studio's only other release, with the studio going bankrupt in 1998.

The promise and the peril of ChatGPT. By Casey Newton.
Reading about the potential for abuse here, I found myself thinking about the classic science fiction story “A Logic Named Joe,” in which author Murray Leinster predicts the consumer internet in 1946(!). One of the computers on the network gets a little wonky and starts answering questions on how to commit murder.
People are already using ChatGPT to get answers to potentially lethal questions.
Less significantly, ChatGPT could potentially be the end of Google and industries that have grown around it—advertising and search engine optimization. Google gives search results, but ChatGPT provides answers.

One of the big difficulties in artificial intelligence is accounting for defeasible reasoning. For example, when an agent encounters a bird, it should assume that bird is capable of flight, despite the existence of flightless birds. This is unlike mathematical logic, where-in which conclusions are only implied provided the addition of new information could not possibly invalidate them. Defeasible reasoning thus requires special defeasible logics.
Perhaps the most straightforward manner of constructing a defeasible logic is as follows. Our models are "rank" functions R : W \to \mathbb{N} which assign a degree of implausibility to every possible world in W. Here possible worlds are often just truth value assignments. We then say that a defeasible implication A => B is satisfied by R iff the set of minimal worlds in A under R, denoted min(A,R), is a subset of B.
To clarify the bird example, we can place flying birds at rank zero, birds with broken wings at rank one, and birds with broken wings nevertheless equipped with a jet pack at rank two. This ranking would satisfy the following implications: bird => can_fly, bird & broken_wing => not can_fly, and finally bird & broken_wing & jetpack => can_fly.
If you are interested, defeasible logics constructed in this manner are referred to as preferential logics. Answer-set programming is the other major and effective approach to defeasible reasoning in artificial intelligence at the moment.

"The Crucial Role of Industrial Control Integrators: Driving Efficiency and Innovation in Modern Industry"
The Essential Role of an Industrial Control Integrator in Modern Industry
In today’s fast-paced industrial environment, the expertise of an Industrial Control Integrator has become indispensable. These professionals or companies specialize in designing, implementing, and maintaining complex control systems that are critical for optimizing industrial processes. This blog delves into the pivotal role of an Industrial Control Integrator, explaining their key responsibilities and the impact they have on industrial efficiency.
What is an Industrial Control Integrator?
An Industrial Control Integrator is a specialized expert or firm responsible for creating and managing control systems that automate and regulate industrial machinery and processes. These control systems encompass both hardware and software components, which work together to enhance performance, increase reliability, and streamline operations.
Core Responsibilities of an Industrial Control Integrator
Control System Design and Engineering:
Needs Analysis: The integrator begins with a comprehensive assessment of the client’s specific requirements. This involves understanding their industrial processes and defining the desired outcomes.
Custom System Design: Based on the assessment, the integrator designs a bespoke control system, selecting the appropriate sensors, controllers, and communication protocols to meet the client’s needs.
Integration and Installation:
Hardware Setup: The integrator manages the installation of essential components such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and other field instruments.
Software Configuration: They also configure the software that governs the control system, ensuring seamless communication between hardware and other operational systems.
Testing and Commissioning:
System Testing: Before full deployment, the integrator conducts rigorous testing to identify and rectify any issues, simulating real-world conditions to verify system performance.
Commissioning: Once testing is complete, the integrator supervises the final commissioning process, making any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal functionality.
Training and Ongoing Support:
Staff Training: Integrators provide training for the client’s personnel, equipping them with the knowledge to operate and maintain the new system effectively.
Continued Support: They offer ongoing maintenance and support services to resolve any issues and ensure the system continues to operate smoothly.
Why Industrial Control Integrators are Vital
Boosting Efficiency:
Industrial Control Integrators streamline processes by automating operations, which reduces manual input and enhances precision. This leads to improved productivity and reduced operational costs.
Enhancing Safety:
Integrators implement advanced control systems that monitor conditions in real time, increasing workplace safety by triggering alarms or shutdowns when necessary.
Ensuring Reliability:
By designing systems with redundancy and fail-safes, integrators help minimize downtime, which is crucial for meeting production targets and maintaining product quality.
Facilitating Scalability:
As businesses expand, their control systems must adapt. Integrators create flexible solutions that can be easily scaled or upgraded to meet growing demands.
Incorporating Emerging Technologies:
With the rise of Industry 4.0, integrating new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important. Control integrators are key to incorporating these innovations into existing systems.
The Future of Industrial Control Integration
The field of industrial control integration is continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements and shifting industry needs. Future trends include:
AI and Machine Learning Integration: Enhancing predictive maintenance and process optimization.
IoT Integration: Enabling more detailed data collection and real-time analytics.
Enhanced Cybersecurity: Addressing the increasing need for robust security measures to protect industrial control systems from cyber threats.
Conclusion
Industrial Control Integrators are essential in ensuring the efficiency, reliability, and safety of modern industrial processes. Their expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems is crucial for optimizing operations and keeping pace with technological advancements. For businesses looking to upgrade or implement control systems, partnering with a skilled Industrial Control Integrator can be the key to achieving greater efficiency and performance.

Fair Warning: AI can neither count, or do logic.
In short, this article:
To elaborate: when a problem has ONE correct answer, whether it's basic math or simple logic, AI still fails often and spits out over-hyped, combative answers. It's as if the things were trained in India or by trolls on the internet, or both.
But mainly, it's a Garbage In, Garbage Out issue. When you have legitimate software, even if it has algorithms, it's coded with verified hard data and known answers, and the means to get them. An actual word processing program has a dictionary file in it. AI and its apps? Not so much--they're all probability pushers, programs meant to operate inside of a Bell Curve, or a box of what "seems legit."
And to use an historical example of how wrong probability-based rationality can get? Galileo and Copernicus both were punished by the Catholic Churches of their day, for suggesting that the evidence supported a Round Earth that went Around the Sun at the Center of the Solar System. Respectively. That's the exact kind of error AI pushes: if it sees a thing happen often enough, it will assume the thing is a fact even if it's satire, a meme, or just plain wrong.
