Hello! I love your Cosplay Guides for COD! It’s very detailed and well done! But I can’t seem to find the character I’d like to cosplay beside Soap! I even found and looked on your DeviantArt, but he wasn’t there. Would it be possible to consider adding Gary ‘Roach’ Sanderson? Thank you in advance! :)

Ah, here’s where it gets difficult as there isn’t a “canon” reboot appearance of Roach that is able to be properly broken down. A lot of the “remaster” Roach images out there are actually just using modified or “kitbashed” versions of AI NPC skins or generic MP “milsim” skins, which share a lot of the same core assets as the campaign characters in terms of clothing, plate carriers, and pouches, albiet in different configurations and colourations.

The OG trilogy doesn’t give us much to work on either as we didn’t really see more than his arms from the first person mode, and what glimpses of his body we do get, he’s wearing the same kit as the other TF141 characters as their appearance was a lot more uniform than the reboot is. The other issue with the OG trilogy is that the equipment, even in the remaster, is too low-poly and generic to really make any kind of identification of specific equipment nearly impossible.

(Post-note: This is turning into a longer response than I expected so I’ll throw this under the cut)

Personally, if I were building a cosplay for Roach that was in line with the reboot’s aesthetics, then I would start with what “theme” I want to capture based on existing trends. Looking at what the other boys have there are about three, maybe four distinct themes:

- Night Raider: the “nightwar” gear where they’re all in black and navy blue, night vision goggles, all that “going dark” angle

- Field Work: what the boys wear a lot during MW19 and MWIII, your more conventional SF look with the green, brown, and camouflage printed clothing and gear, maybe helmets or hats, etc.

- Urban Ops: essentially streetwear or civilian attire with their combat loads just thrown over the top, maybe a thinned out load for mobility or “short duration” actions. Think Soap’s tee & jeans load or what is worn during the tunnel fight in the end of MWIII.

Once you have a theme in mind, draw inspiration from the others for what Roach might have, and don’t be afraid to incorporate headcanons if you so choose.

Here’s what I would do if I were building a Roach costume, using what is known from the canon trilogy and commonly adopted fanon.

Theme: Urban Operations

Clothing:

- Ranger Green Crye G3 combat shirt, rolled up sleeves to below the elbow. UK IR flag patch on right shoulder pocket flap.

- Faded blue and torn denim jeans, single kneepad on the right knee.

- Mechanix Original gloves in Coyote Brown, cutoff the trigger finger halfway on the right glove.

Platform (vest):

- Crye CPC in coyote brown

— Condor Tactical Annex Admin pouch on the top velcro section of the vest

— 2x HSGI Twin AR Taco rifle mag pouches on the front MOLLE panel, occupying wearer’s left and centre row pairs

— Flashbang pouch occupying right row pair of the front molle panel

— Left cummerbund, running front to back: HSGI Single AR Taco rifle mag pouch, Spritus Systems GP pouch, Tactical Tailor PRC-152 radio pouch - all coyote brown

— Right cummerbund, front to back: flashbang pouch, Spritus Systems GP pouch

— Rear platebag just remains empty to accommodate a backpack when needed

— Patches: Green IR UK flag patch attached to the admin pouch

- Ronin Tactics TF Belt, coyote brown

— Left hip: ESSTAC twin pistol magazine pouch, with single HSGI AR Taco behind it

— Small of back: Blue Force Gear Micro Trauma NOW IFAK

— Right Hip: holster of some kind on a low-ride platform, suitable for a sidearm of your choosing. Recommend Safariland brand.

Headwear:

Beanie/watch cap with Opscore AMP headset over the top, half-face neckwrap in black or grey, with tinted wrap sunglasses.

Haven’t covered footwear as I have a few boots I wear personally, can’t go wrong with either Underarmour or Oakley tactical boots, or cross reference my guides and see what the others wear.

I hope this serves as a helpful guide or something to help you out with your own Roach cosplay. And believe me, if we do get a Roach character in the reboot verse you can bet that I’ll have their loadout breakdown done!

State of the Thing: December

Heyo everyone, it's nearly the end of 2023, and what a wild ride it was. A return to full-time freelancing, as well as several new clients and pushing past my comfort zone with some of this year's new works. With the start of a new year coming, I figured this calls for a long-from article rather than the usual "Commissions for the month" post.

So, on the topic of commissions, due to several reasons (which will be brought up further down) I will be very busy in December, and as such will be offering 2 Rendered-style slots for the month of December! Since these are the days where my friends, family, and I commemorate Christmas and New Year's Eve, I will not be available for contact during these days as well.

Now, let's talk about 2024; it's no surprise that 2023 wasn't the most fantastic in terms of earning my keep, what with the worsening state of the economy, the increasing efforts of social media to strangle the reach of creators, as well as the ongoing threat of unscrupulous users of AI. In light of all this, I've been thinking of a few possible things I could do to bring more to the table:

Streaming?

A few people have expressed interest in seeing my workflow, and so I was thinking of possibly streaming for 1-2 hours while I work on art. I'll be doing a few trial streams in January 2024 at different time zones to gauge interest, and if it pans out well, I'll iron out the kinks regarding the times when I'll stream, with possible expansions to content.

Restructuring of Ko-Fi subscriptions

Since my Ko-Fi Subcriptions haven't been gaining a lot of traction, I've been thinking about offering more stuff to entice others to join in. The $1 tier will remain the same, but there will be adjustments to the $3 tier and an additional $5 tier with addtional rewards (with updated branding to reflect the changes), and the changes will apply in January 2024.

The updated tiers and rewards will be as follows:

Since Singapore has been increasing Goods and Service Taxes to 9%, and most services (Paypal, website hosting, cloud storage) upping operation costs to compensate, it may be time to increase prices for commissions. I'll formulate an updated rate based on the current trend of living wages, and will probably announce the updated prices during the March commission announcement (at end of February).

If you don’t mind,, can I ask you what your favorite thing is about milk bastard? He’s such a rare blorbo to have (positive) and I haven’t seen a lot of people blorbifying him. Which is such a shame.

I've gotten a few other asks along these lines so I'll be answering all of them here haha.

Ash really snuck up on me slowly after I first watched the OG alien movies during the big covid lockdown. I initially came for Ripley and the xeno but something about Ian Holm's acting as Ash really stuck with me and over time it kinda made a home in my brain. I also love to cosplay and just so happen to be the same height and build as him, which made my decision to cosplay him for a comi-con.

The more I thought about the movie the more interested I got in the implications of what it means to be a secret robot who is a man but also not a man, and how it might have felt for him to go crazy like that.

That line of thought coincided with that trend a while ago where everyone was analyzing what traits a character would need to increase their chances of being blorbofied. I discovered that there were five major ones that were pretty consistent throughout my history of having hyper-fixations on characters.

I also ran into that AI-generated issue a couple times, once with seeing a cool video for a manga series I like where it was x series but 80s fantasy movie so I checked the description like oh wow who cosplayed this and it was just. AI (so disappointing) and one of my favorite channels ( a soapmaker one) all of a sudden making a video where AI designs their soap

See, and I could almost ALMOST see some merit in someone like, say, a cooking channel compiling a bunch of one-star, legitimately awful recipes, and shoving them into an AI to see what comes out.

Because at least in that case, it's less 'look at this original content I totally made on my own' and more 'these recipes are so shite that human hands can't make anything from them, let's see if a computer can'

But with the whole 'let me make soap/cake/comics that AI designed for me' trend it's like... No. Stop that.

And, for another example of 'no, stop that', that Stephen King channel I mentioned. For the video they did on The Stand and The Long Walk, do they really expect me to believe that they couldn't find license-free pictures of heartland America or military personnel that they had to rely on AI? Hell, with The Stand there's not one but TWO film adaptations to pull pictures from.

There's no excuse!

Nas últimas semanas, a minha psicóloga me passou como dever de casa fazer o Moda Personagem de uma personagem específica: A Adulta Saudável. E para quem não conhece, o Moda Personagem nada mais é do que uma forma que eu criei para fazer cosplays dos personagens das minhas histórias. Comecei com isso lá em 2012/2013, não lembro com certeza. Claro que era apenas por diversão que fazia, uma forma divertida (e barata) de colocar os personagens que estão na cabeça e no papel para o mundo real. A ideia era fazer usando com as minhas próprias roupas. Nessa época eu fui criticada por algumas pessoas por fazer isso. Que talvez não mostrasse a seriedade que uma autora deveria ter ou que talvez eu tivesse algum problema mental e deveria me tratar. Claro que fiquei chateada - até porque ninguém gosta de ser criticado - mas continuo fazendo até hoje. Ironicamente, com as redes sociais de vídeos curtos, uma das trends são justamente os vídeos de looks e especialmente os inspirados em personagens. Pois é! E uma pequena informação para a pessoa que disse que devia ir para a terapia: a minha terapeuta acha muito legal e incentiva mesmo. Tanto que até pediu como dever de casa né? Mas, a questão aqui nem é o Moda Personagem. Voltemos a Adulta Saudável... Eu refleti bastante para poder montar esse visual. Primeiro tinha pensado numa coisa mais formal, mas ai não ia passar a ideia que eu tinha. A adulta saudável é aquela que saber exatamente as origens de todas as suas crenças, se desconstrói delas. Sabe sobre o que está sentindo, o por que está sentindo e como reagir e lidar. Ela é como se fosse mais um daqueles meus sentimentos do conto "A Busca da Criatividade", andando junto sempre com a Determinação. E parafraseando o que coloquei na legenda da foto no instagram... "Ela é poderosa, ela é dona de si, ela sabe controlar os outros sentimentos e sabe as origens e bases de tudo o que sente. Ela tem a alma colorida, é espontânea, adora a cor vermelha. Só que ela não é uma personagem, ela é uma versão melhorada de mim. A minha versão depois de anos de terapia que finalmente se entende e se acolhe quando necessário, pensando principalmente naquela pequena Anelise que nem sempre podia fazer tudo o que queria ou reprimia muito seus sentimentos. Ela é livre, ela coloca todos os acessórios que quer, coloca uma pinta, um batom vermelho, veste o que quer e faz o que quer. Simplesmente não liga para o outros, ela é, simplesmente e plenamente, ela!" E eu me emocionei muito quando expliquei para a minha psicóloga os motivos de ter escolhido aquele visual para a "Adulta saudável"... Eu queria ser ela sabe? Mas, é ai que está a questão: Eu já sou ela! No momento em que cuido de mim e dos meus sentimentos, das minhas vontades, entendendo e compreendendo, sou uma "Adulta Saudável". E cada dia mais vou tomando posse dessa "versão melhorada" de mim!

Jeris Johnson - Dragonborn

Let me ask you all a really strange question: have you ever wondered what an album created from TikTok trends would sound like? I haven’t earlier, at least until I heard the debut album from Jeris Johnson, entitled Dragonborn. I’ve vaguely heard of him, mainly through scrolling past his TikToks of trendy nu-metal, metalcore, trap metal, and hip-hop, but this record includes some more TikTok trends, like Viking and fantasy cosplay and aesthetics, sea shanties, and random stuff like that. It all just feels like an AI-generated TikTok album, and because of that, it feels so manufactured and it ends up sounding absolutely awful.

The myriad of sounds isn’t the issue all in itself, but it’s how it’s done. Johnson’s voice is one of the most gratings I’ve heard in awhile, reminding me a lot of Ronnie Radke (another guy that makes really bad nu-metalcore / hard-rock these days), but this album has no sense of flow or focus. The songs can switch genres in the middle of the song itself, and it just turns at the drop of a hat. It doesn’t know what it wants to be, and that’s the other main thing. Sure, this album’s sound is pretty bad, but its messiness just makes it worse.

This album is just so baffling, because who’s it for? This album has Octanecore, nu-metal, butt-rock, hip-hop, trap-metal, sea shanties, and some medieval-sounding music, but it doesn’t know how to combine it. Not to mention, the lyrics on this album are beyond awful, but there are also some strange covers, too, like Seal’s 90s song “Kiss From A Rose.” Who asked for that? This album is one of the most baffling things I’ve heard all year, but it’s also one of the worst things I’ve heard, too. It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard all year, but it’s up there.
