Die Abenteuerkomödie Our Flag Means Death, die zu unseren Top-Comedys des Jahres 2022 zählte, kommt am 1. Juni endlich via RTL+ nach Deutschland. Die zehn Episoden der ersten Season laufen dann pünktlich zum Pride-Monat im hiesigen Hafen ein - schließlich ist das Format mittlerweile als „the gay pirate show“ bekannt. Eine zweite Staffel, die im Juni letzten Jahres bestätigt wurde, ist der Serie von HBO Max auch schon sicher und derzeit in Arbeit.

Der Neuseeländer Rhys Darby, den man als Bandmanager aus Flight of the Conchords oder als Werwolf aus der What We Do in the Shadows-Filmvorlage kennt, spielt in „Our Flag Means Death“ die historische Figur des Aristokraten Stede Bonnet, der 1717 sein gemütliches Adelsleben hinter sich lässt, um als zartbesaiteter Gentleman Pirate halsabschneiderische Abenteuer auf dem Meer zu erleben. Dabei kreuzen sich seine Seewege mit dem legendären Piratenkapitän Blackbeard (Co-Produzent Taika Waititi), dem wiederum das aufregende Seeräuberleben immer mehr zum einseitigen Trott wird...

Weitere Rollen haben Rory Kinnear (Years and Years) als Captains der englischen Navy in einer Doppelrolle, Nathan Foad (Bloods) als Lucius, Samson Kayo (Truth Seekers) als Oluwande, Ewen Bremner („Wonder Woman“) als Buttons, David Fane („Next Goal Wins“) als Fang, Joel Fry („Cruella“) als Frenchie, Guz Khan („Man Like Mobeen“) als Ivan, Matt Maher („Marriage Story“) als Black Pete, Con O'Neill (Happy Valley) als Izzy Hands, Kristian Nairn (Game of Thrones) als Wee John, Vico Ortiz (Everything's Gonna Be Okay) als Jim und Leslie Jones („SNL“) als Spanish Jackie.

the thing about spike is that he's such a rat man, such a pathetic, horrible freak, but james marsters is so charismatic that even when he's at his worst, he's got something interesting to him, and then of course at some point spike's development is such that he'll say things like "made a promise to a lady" in order to explain why he's helping the good guys at high risk of death and it's so very casually heroic and chivalrous, and he'll collapse to the ground and sob into his hands when buffy dies, and you can see how that was there the whole time, but twisted by all his anger and a lifetime with drusilla (who herself was twisted into her shape by angel), so you just can't help but root for him to become a hero of some kind
