They meet there when Louis is waiting for the bus, Harry tries to cheer Louis up and agrees to write to him while he's deployed because Louis doesn't have anyone else to write to. People kinda make fun of Harry for writing to (and falling for) a virtual stranger but otherwise everything is great until Louis stops writing. AKA travelin' soldier by the Dixie Chicks but gay and with a happy ending.

⋙ Ever Since I Tried Your Way | anon | historical - 1940s - 1950s - farm/ranch - internalized homophobia - hurt/comfort - emotional hurt/comfort - fluff - smut - gender exploration - body worship - 26k Harry had been kissed before, but never like this. He’d shared sweet, curious kisses behind bleachers and in soda shop booths, one or two more daring ones in cars parked on dark suburban streets, but the girls he’d kissed had never filled him with the desperation that erupted from Louis’ touch. He parted his lips and pulled him closer, as though he could breathe Louis straight into his lungs, as if he could swallow him. Like now, when he’s gazing down at Louis with so much adoration and tenderness. It’s like they’re both on the cusp of something more, but neither of them ever say a word. His confession is on the tip of his tongue ready to slide out like honey, and yet he remains silent. They both do, looking at each other and recognizing the reluctance mirrored in each other’s eyes. He’s actually glad it’s Liam that's dragging the subject out from the shadows and into the light. Louis turns to face him, mirroring his position on the couch and nods, ready for him to continue. Liam takes a deep breath. “Have you spoken to Harry recently?” Five years after Vertigo goes on hiatus, the band comes back together for a benefit concert. Can Louis and Harry work through their complicated past, or are some wounds too deep to be healed?

He took a long, dramatic pause, sipping his lemonade, and then said, “Scheming.” aka I've watched Shura's "What's It Gonna Be?" music video one too many times. ((Or, Louis and Bebe, best friends since childhood, have crushes on two of the most popular kids in school, and in an attempt to increase their respective chances, Louis befriends Harry Styles, quarterback of the football team, while Bebe befriends Clare Uchima, head cheerleader. Only... the plan... doesn't go exactly as planned.))

Your friends are staring a lot.” Oliver goes beet red at that. He groans and hides his face on his hands. “Oh my god. Oh my god.” --------------------- Written for the prompt: Harry’s and Louis’ son is like 16, so he is hanging out with his friends and his friends are teasing him about how hot his mother (aka harry) is, just like the 1D boys always did with Harry about Anne. The son feels super uncomfortable and Louis is super confused why these little teenagers boys always stare at Harry’s body when he is cooking for them whenever they visit until he finds out they think of Harry as the hottest milf in town (more humor than actual sexual references pls, this is supposed to be more funny than awkwardly sexual :D)

⋙ An Invincible Summer | Brooklyn_Babylon | farm/ranch - historical - 1940s - period-typical homophobia - adoption - minor character death - epilepsy - homophobic language - smut - 44k Never content to stay in one place for long, a few months down south researching for his novel seemed like an idyllic, slow-paced summer to Louis. He wasn't ready for the blistering heat, the backbreaking work of watermelon picking, or how stifling the attitudes in rural Georgia would feel. And he definitely hadn’t anticipated falling in love with the farmer’s son. The summer of 1946 would turn out to be everything worth writing about.

⋙ a trail of honey through it all | faeriestyles | strangers to friends to lovers - mild violence - D/s undertones - 27k The boy in front of him, well really, the man in front of him, was like something out of a confusing wet dream. Built, tall, tan and muscular, his skin glistened with sweat after a long day of working outdoors with his hands. He was wearing a cut up old American football shirt, the bottom hem was torn and the sleeves were cut off to the point where the t-shirt was really just a loose tank top. The shorts he had on had clearly been full length jeans at one point, and were now just crudely cut off above the knee. His white socks were pulled up too high on his calves, and the brown work boots he had on were old as fuck, the leather peeling along the edges of the soles. Curly brown hair stuck out from the edges of his backwards snapback, and there was a smudge of grease wiped along his brow bone. The smattering of hair along his jaw proved that he hadn’t shaved in a week or two, the hair growing in thicker across his upper lip and around his chin. His sinfully bowed mouth was pink and plump, and Louis was suddenly hyper-focused on the way that he chewed at the toothpick stuck between his lips. He looked like he needed a shower. Louis wanted to lick him. Or, the TPH fic we’ve all been waiting for.

⋙ The Recklessness in Water | LarryOn | light angst - smut - 50k Louis Tomlinson is miserable. He's stuck on a family vacation at a lake cabin in New Hampshire when all he wants to do is bemoan his sorry existence and wallow in his sweatpants. As if the humidity and mosquitos weren't bad enough, he becomes the singular target of an obnoxious lifeguard named Harry.

Louis only knows what he’s seen on file and what he’s heard them talking about, but he fully lives up to the image he had inside of his head. He saunters down the front steps of the farmhouse in his Levi’s, brown snakeskin boots curving out from underneath the denim Louis’ sure he had specially made. He’s got on a plaid button-down tucked into the jeans because of course he does, curls spilling out from either side of his cowboy hat around his sunglasses and country-tan skin. “Harry Styles,” he drawls, extending a hand to Louis’ manager, “Pleased to meet ya’ll.”

Louis has a sip as well, lets the tea burn down his throat too quickly, too hot, and he feels it all the way down to his stomach. “The truth. Essentially,” he replies after a moment, licking his lips, relishing the slightly bitter taste of the brew that’s never quite strong enough for Louis’ liking. At least it’s not decaf. “That my dog scented it. That I didn’t touch the body. That I came here first thing.”

Geoff nods pensively. “Did he believe you?”

“Probably not. There’s only so many people who can drown on dry land before it gets fishy.”

or: Harry is a journalist, Louis has lots of secrets and the moors aren't exactly the ideal place to rekindle a lost romance.

Harry Styles is Team Great Britain's newest swimmer, and has spent his whole life training for this moment, a chance at the gold medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics. All his training, hard work, and dedication to no distractions is tested when he's assigned to the same Rio apartment as Louis Tomlinson, British gymnast and Harry's childhood crush.

“You’ll change your mind once you’ve seen more of the world,” Louis had teased, pressing a brutally delicate kiss onto Harry’s lovely, pure cheek. “Once you’ve been properly defiled.” He had whispered filthily, delighted by the gasp he heard, the frantic pink blush that had rested high on Harry’s cheeks, the power he had felt at knowing he could make the Crown Prince squirm.

I’m sharing this because I just SHOCKED myself with how many IDEAS I’ve had for this fanfic that haven’t been posted yet.

And half of it’s STILL IN SHORTHAND!

I ran a word count and it’s 93k words.

This story is almost 100k words, and I’ve only published 90 pages so far. Only 38k words are published.

I can’t.... That’s just.....

.....How the HELL do I run out of material??? When this story is clearly such fertile grounds for creativity?

And, more importantly: How the hell do I bridge the gap between What I’ve Already Written and What I Need to Write?

(considering Story Particulars below the cut, Final Decisions for NTS at the end. please don’t rebagle)

My biggest hurdle after we reached the Decision to Visit Lavender Tower was Getting There in the First Place. I have lots of ideas for the team exploring Sinnoh! But I’m thinking I might cut out the entire “Traveling Through Kanto” thing, because:

1.) I have no idea where the fuck Kanto is in relation to Sinnoh. I got it in my head that you can reach Kanto by going through Johto, but I? can’t figure out where I saw that or why I thought that made sense??? (I know Kanto and Johto are connected because of HG/SS and I’ve read you can literally walk out of Kanto and into Johto. But why did I think Sinnoh would be on another Johto border???)

Serebii’s PokeEarth feature, probably, but I don’t know if that arrangement of regions has any canon basis whatsoever.

2.) I have Very Few Ideas for what to do between Kanto’s border and arriving in Lavender Town. I have Exactly One (1) Idea for what to do in Johto.

3.) I have learned that I’m Very Okay with airplanes, and my trainer is okay riding on a Pidgeotto, so we can just fucking. Fly there. Probably. 15 is old enough to go on a plane by yourself, isn’t it? The Pokemon world is safe for 10-year-olds to walk everywhere on their own, for fuck’s sake. I mean, cheap flights aren’t THAT expensive either...

Not to be all “Reality Check” in a world where my favorite creature can canoically cast a love spell anytime she feels like it. But I’m gonna run some numbers real quick because Skipping The Travel is the only solution I see that will actually get this story up and running.

~ Through Extra Cheap and Basic Packaging, I can usually find a domestic flight for $75, usually comes to about $130 by the time all the fees are paid. (Unless it’s a non-stop flight from Cleveland to San Diego, but I feel like Sinnoh to Hoenn isn’t an entire whole-ass continent away. Hell even Cleveland to San Diego with a stop or two along the way is still less than $200.)

~ Poke coupons function more like yen, so $130 is like.... 14,249 according to the internet. So let’s say Jess needs 14k P to catch a flight.

That’s.... a LOT of battling. Especially for a trainer that doesn’t really like battling. I mean the very next chapter “opens” with Jess’s philosophy on training as a means of survival while traveling, and I have a couple of battles outlined, but I think I might need to.... Add More.

Kinda assume Pokecenter services are free, since Pokemon is basically solarpunk and socialist. She’d still need to buy food and supplies, though.

Now that I think about it, I read somewhere that the first 4 gen regions are based on real regions in Japan. So if we figure IRL Inspo into their distances, maybe it’s less of a flight and more of a train ride.

In which case, if Japanese trains are as cheap as Amtrack, it’s less than half the price. I’ve read Japan has better infrastructure policies by far though, so it’s probably cheaper? Not to mention, Japan is a lot smaller, so it’s probably a much shorter ride than the ones I looked up, too!

Also, Japan has bullet trains...... I can’t remember anything about Trains Existing in the Pokemon World, but if they have airplanes and road vehicles, why wouldn’t they have trains?

UPDATE: THEY DO EXIST. Canonically! And as of Gen IV, it’s a Very Freaking Fast train, too. (Suck it, Amtrack.) Thanks, Link and Jaida!

My only concern then would be traveling with 5 real actual living creatures on a train ride. Ninetales and Excalibur are content in Pokeballs, Murky happily snoozes in there if nothing’s going on, but Missie isn’t used to hers and Mistress refuses to stay in one. Missie could be convinced. Mistress? You couldn’t FORCE that ghost in a Pokeball. (Believe me, we tried.) But even being loose in a train car, I doubt she’d handle being in an enclosed space for Multiple Hours very well... not to mention, sheer boredom. She’d have a hard time with it, for sure.

Then again......... I kinda like the idea of an Attempt at Bonding With Her while on the train because everyone else is napping in their Pokeballs, and if we get a night train, the other passengers will be asleep. Also, if night trains are anything like night flights and night buses, they’d be a lot less crowded. Talking to her could be used As A Distraction because she’s unnerved...

Ooooh, I like that idea a LOT, actually!

(How fast do maglev trains run, actually? And how FAR would it be running between... Whatever city I Decide to Put the Station and Wherever It Would Arrive in Kanto? I don’t do Time Calculations, because my brain’s Fucked with time spans between Massive Time Blindness and Also Massive Dyscalculia, but I’m trying to at least figure out if this is a “15 minutes on the train” situation or “1-2 hours” situation. Because those traveling times feel VERY different, especially since this would be Jess’s first time on a train.)

(Also, how does a levitating creature “stay in place” in a moving vehicle? Wouldn’t she have to move at the speed of the train? Would that get exhausting? Prrrrobably one of those things that’s too technical to get into.)

Jim pines after Spock, but Spock isn’t available. Which sounds maybe normal and sad – but this one messes with alternate universes and timelines, and the ending had me shook for days.

Crazy awesome AU where Spock begins kolihnar at a young age and Jim escapes to Vulcan after Tarsus IV. The ending is a little sad but very hopeful, and the fic is a real joy to read.

Honestly, even just rereading the summary makes me emotional. This fic is absolutely beautifully written. It was probably one of the first that I read, and it’s very perfect. The concept/premise is really interesting – but I don’t want to spoil it, so just trust me when I say it’s amazing.

Daffodil Time by ladyblahblah; rated E, 88k words

Jim and Spock meet as kiddos and, sure enough, become the best of friends. Coming-of-age/bildungsroman kind of story. This is really, really sweet and I loved reading it. The ending is sad and a cliff-hanger, though; I believe there’s an unfinished sequel.

Gift by littlebirdtold; rated E, 30k words

Jim is stranded on Vulcan as a young child but is taken in by Spock’s family. However, he must be constantly kept in hiding, as Vulcan is extremely xenophobic and would persecute him. Spock and Jim quickly become close – but how close is too close??? The ending is amazing and makes you question like… everything.

You Don’t Have To (Say Yes) by luminousbeings; rated E, 192k words

This fic is really, really heavy. Warning – the plot and development goes back to sex-abuse against a child, but it’s portrayed as an ugly, ugly thing and is handled well. The depths to which the author digs into their characters – especially Jim – is amazing. I also wanted to cry a lot. It was amazing. There’s so much to learn from this fic, which honestly is probably one of the best pieces of literature ever. Also – Great Gatsby references! Fun!!

Mutable Signs by notboldly; rated E, 34k words

In an AU where Surak’s teachings never caught traction, Sybok presents Spock with a sex slave called Kirk. WHICH SOUNDS BAD HOWEVER, Spock is NOT a douche and does NOT take advantage of Kirk in any way, shape, or form. It’s very good. The plot-twist at the end left me yellin’ for days.

Star Trek: Mirror (The Movie) by spectralPhobia; rated T, 48k words

This is a modern take on “Mirror, Mirror” set in AOS! It’s in movie script format, but that wasn’t a trouble at all. It was fantastically action-packed and adapted, 10/10 would recommend!! I also really love what the writer did with Moreau.

This is kind of a sequel to “The Marriage of True Minds”, but not really. It’s like low-key Pre-Reform Vulcan, which is about as awesome as it sounds!! Which is very!!!! The basic plot is that Jim’s trying to get Earth and Vulcan to team up against the Romulans, and he’s trying to get his kidnapped brother back. Which he believes he can do by seducing Spock. It’s great!

THE MARRIAGE OF TRUE MINDS by spicyshimmy; rated M, 262k words

An AU where Spock and Jim are space princes and are in an arranged marriage!! Of course, they fall in love and all, and the progression from funny-pen-pals to mmmMMM-feelings-are-present to so-in-love-it’s-ridiculous is amazing. Worth every damn hour spent staying up late. (This is the fic that got me started and invested in this ship. ❤)

I didn’t even realize when I started this fic that this was a Victoria-based story!! I just saw that it was a Royal AU and I was like – that’s my jam!! But anyway, Spock is a Space Prince™, Jim is a Space Prince™ that just wants to be a Space Captain™, and it’s really great. Spock might seem OOC because he’s less logic-bound, but I think it was very well-written.

Leave No Soul Behind by whochick; rated M, 258k words

This AU is so, so perfect in so many ways. The build up to K/S is incredible, the OCs are beautifully crafted, and the characterizations are so on-point and perfect. Honestly, everything about this is perfect. The world-building… Everything is so believable and. It’s just. I could sing this fic’s praises until the end of the universe.

This one is lots of fun, and is probably the best Academy AU out there!! Basically, Jim and Spock are the same year and are forced to share a dorm, and they’re not happy about it. Except later they become happy about it. :) And there’s lots of references to TOS episodes!
