Finally got around to watching the 911 ls finale & honestly? I feel like they really captured the thesis of the show. Ik there are very mixed feelings about it & I get them to a degree but at the same time I don’t think I would change anything.

Gabriel dying did overshadow some of the happiness but this is a show that begun with tragedy. Like yes there could have been an emergency, and if this was the og show that’s probably what would have happened. But lone star… it’s all about those worst days of your life, where everything just seems so entirely hopeless. And how despite that you find a way to be a happy anyway. All their joy is built on tragedy. On grief and survival and guilt and anger and fear and sadness.

Like that scene where Wyatt starts building blocks with Charlie?? Or when Tommy jokes about the bouquet?? And just, when Carlos decides to go ahead with the wedding anyway like. The worst day of your life does not have to be your last day, and that’s Lone Star at its core baby

SaL anon here friend and it's Friday, i'm getting over my 12th cold since the year started, and AO3 is down so if you don't mind I'll be ranting about my recent Buddie thought. So with all the discourse over if Buddie is actually happening I've been thinking about scenes and got stuck on 4x14. As you've noted that episode would be pretty shitty without Tim's scenes, and I'm fascinated by the choices made in the scene where Buck talks to Chris. Obviously we start with Buck barely holding it

together when he enters. They talk, and then Buck gets that text that Eddie is going to be okay. And he just breaks. Now if this was JUST about Buck having to tell his BFF's kid bad news, when Buck gets that text shouldn't he have been relieved and happy?? Isn't that what his reaction you'd expect if the same had happened to Chim or Hen? But it doesn't happen here and it's easy to say after everything, he's just so relieved but that's a pretty specific reaction. I'm thinking something like Sense and Sensibility, when Eleanor cries finding out Edward isn't married and forever beyond her reach. Its the reaction you'd expect from someone who's had to think about never having this person in your life and finding out it's not going to happen and hate to tell KR, that is NOT a platonic reaction. I don't know why that got stuck in my head recently, but I blame the absolute boredom of last season for not giving me something better to think about.

Okay, so you know my thoughts about the shooting specifically being good, but 4x14 in general being way overrated just because of a couple scenes which ignores how KR sidelined the firefam from Eddie’s injury/recovery and also sidelined EDDIE himself from what should have been his own story. (Unlike Buck who still got to have a whole spin-off thing from his ladder truck injury. At the time it happened it was about Bobby, but Buck still got to be centered in his injury and recovery, just saying). 

ANYWAY, that all aside, you bring up a VERY interesting point which is one of the things that people latch on to about this episode, and that, as you pointed out, nearly didn’t exist because KR didn’t think the audience needed to see Buck telling Chris about what happened to Eddie and Tim put his foot down. Now ostensibly, that was because Tim knew the dynamic is a favorite and a scene like that is right at the heart of the show and something at the time it was known for doing and doing well. However what we got was NOT an adult telling a kid some tough news, stepping out to take a call about an injured co-worker, letting out a shaky breath and sigh of relief, then returning to the kid to cheerfully give them the good news. Instead we saw someone the kid trusts enough to run away to when he’s upset, struggle to form the words, and then have a full-on sobbing breakdown when he found out his...”friend” made it through surgery while being comforted by the kid like they are a family. Not like Buck is just a co-worker and “dad’s friend” coming tell Chris what happened before leaving him to his grandparents or something like you would see if they were just “normal” friends. Tia Pepa and Abuela are still around, we see them at Eddie’s party, but it’s never even suggested that Chris stay with them, or one of them come stay at Eddie’s. Like????? They both used to watch Chris before and Chris is much older at this point and Carla is around to help. There’s ZERO reason why the two of them couldn’t come stay and watch out for Chris, or Eddie’s mom couldn’t come in from El Paso right away. I just...WHAT IS THE REASON?!

We have seen several members of the firefam get hurt and the only time Buck came anywhere even close to how he’s reacted to Eddie being in danger is finding Maddie in the woods and even that he’s able to be focused and present on her and is just relieved they found her. With Eddie, he’s completely lost and has to have Bobby pull him together during the well incident, and during the shooting Buck freezes first, then saves Eddie but looks one second from falling apart the whole time, and the second he isn’t actively keeping Eddie alive, he’s nearly catatonic. Speaking of other members of the firefam, we saw Bobby’s reaction to Athena being attacked, and Maddie breaking down sobbing (very much like Buck did with Chris) when she hears that Chim is alive, and how Chim broke talking to and about Maddie in regards to her leaving, hell we literally JUST saw in Tomorrow Hen having the exact same reaction to Karen nearly dying and the way she broke down when they got Karen’s pulse back and handed her off at the hospital. The parallels there are....very loud. Which begs the question WHY was Tim so adamant that this scene take place and give us all of that, only to ultimately do nothing with it? BRB gotta go scream into the woods about this for a bit.

Probably because we went through 9 hours of show that was about 6 hours of filler that didn’t tell us anything at all. Not a great thing when your show is going to be off the air for 3 months.🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for giving me something to do while waiting for Ao3 to come back up, I am always here for the salt and the general “WTF is all this then?”-ness. And as always, it’s a delight hearing from you. Let’s all manifest some direction for 6b, a return to emergencies that mean something and actually pertain to the main characters and their arcs, FINALLY some good Ravi content, and most of all, Buck and Eddie being allowed to be friends on screen again. Considering that was something very loudly mentioned all season across the board, hopefully someone took some notes. Until then, I’m always here for your rants- excited, frustrated, or otherwise!

obsessed with eddie crawling into his shell in this episode actually. obsessed with the notion that therapy isn’t an immediate fix-all and while he lost his mind while his partner was actively dying in front of him, once there’s nothing left to do, he also seemed return to similar coping mechanisms as we saw when he thought chris was gone. not completely. there’s a difference for sure. and i do think he lets himself feel more while he’s at home. but he still seems to try to suppress the pain to a degree and it makes me so insane.

You do remember that those pride post excluding Eddie only showed up after some Buddie fans very deliberately excluded and outright erased Tommy and the Bucktommy realtionship from their pride posts and still called them "happy pride for all the canon(!) queer characters of 9-1-1"? You wouldn't call that homophobic?

Actually what happened was the 911 news account made a post for pride that included multiple queer characters and ships (both canon and not) including Buddie and B/T. (You can't see B/T in this screenshot but you could in the og twitter post. They are in the top left corner.)

After that was posted some B*mmy fans did not like that Buddie was included even though Eddie has been headcanoned to be queer pretty much since he showed up on 911 and Buddie has been a popular queer (non canon) ship since s2 as well.

So they harassed the 911 news account over this. Some of them even decided to make their own 911 news account because they decided that news account was too biased (solely because they had included a non canon ship in a pride post I guess). The B/T shippers then made their own pride post on their new account highlighting canon queer characters and it didn't include Eddie or Buddie. I believe not long after that they took down their news account. Not sure if it was because of lack of interest or because people were calling them out on the ridiculousness of it all or what.

Also the posts you're talking about the ones Buddie shippers made some that looked like this👇 happened after we started seeing you attacking Eddie and Buddie. Especially when you all have continually been saying that canon is all that matters.

I find it seriously hypocritical and offensive to call us homophobic when you lot just don't seem to even understand queer history. Lgbtq people have ALWAYS headcanoned characters and ships and while getting canon representation is great and important it doesn't negate those characters and ships that people have seen as queer for years.

A lot of lgbtq people love and relate and feel seen by Eddie and Buddie. And while we want them to be canon of course, just the fact that these characters exist and we can see ourselves in their journey matters.

You don't have to like Eddie or ship Buddie and you certainly don't have to include them in the stuff you make and that goes the same for us not having to include B/T or T*mmy in our stuff either. The problem comes when some in your fandom try to act like you're in charge of the entire 911 fandom and even apparently in charge of the correct way pride month is supposed to be celebrated.

A lot of you were Buddie shippers for YEARS and you had no problem headcanoning Eddie as anything but straight and shipping Buddie. There never used to be any issue with celebrating them during pride I've been around fandom for years and there's been Buddie pride stuff made since s2.

I guess things changed when you all decided to jump ship after Buck kissed a guy. And you know what that's your right. You have the right to ship whoever you want. But you don't get to decide that canon characters and ships matter more than fanon ones.

I also think your fandom needs to find some new ways to disagree with people because calling us homophobic every chance you all get is only making you look bad.

Season 7 Press Article Buddie Analysis

Okay I don't usually write meta/spec on press runs/articles but I found these super fascinating today, especially in comparison to how the showrunners (including Tim himself) and the actors have spoken about their arcs in the past.

First I want to say that in these interviews the goal is never actually to give the audience any important information but rather to tease, and purposely be as vague as possible. So most of what they're saying will likely have double meanings and all of them are being extremely careful with the words they choose to say. Now with that out of the way in the first EW article (linked here), I found several things extremely interesting.

Calling Marisol Eddie's "Hardware store flirtation". It's so funny to me, for one, but it's also interesting that that's all she's reduced to. A flirtation. I know that was really all they were in the last season, but we know Marisol's involved (likely minorly) in at least 2 episodes out of the first 5. Natalia on the other hand is for the most part understood to not be coming back (I would honestly be surprised given the actress is in NYC). But what's even more interesting is that Marisol is not mentioned anywhere else in either of these articles, meanwhile Oliver WAS asked about Natalia. So, I want people to keep in mind that in whatever way Marisol IS a part of this season, I SEVERELY doubt she's making it past the finale.

2. This answer about Natalia is your typical non-answer but to me, it's basically a confirmation she isn't coming back, which lends a tad bit more credibility to Tommy potentially stepping in as a LI for Buck (fingers crossed).

3. Buck is apparently called in to help talk to Christopher about dating women. Do I even really have to talk about how weird this sounds? Eddie had a whole WIFE? He dated Ana for many many months. He's currently dating hardware store flirtation Marisol right now. And yet, Ryan is claiming that Eddie feels like he doesn't know how to talk to his son about women? Enough so that he calls Buck to help? Talking to your kid about dating is a new avenue yes, but why are we acting like Eddie has never been with a woman before? Like I know last season in particular emphasized that Eddie isn't the best when it comes to dating but like ??? I swear to GOD y'all it's giving such severe compulsory heterosexuality. Eddie, my man, I hope this is indicative of where your story is going this season because it's been heading this way for many many many years. Separately, I also find the lack of mention of Shannon very interesting as well.

4. Which brings me to this part. The whole family dynamic aside...Buck's romantic relationships have been severely questionable at best the entire show. Before Abby, it's canon that all Buck did was sleep around a lot, which doesn't seem like something you wanna tell a young teen dating for the first time. So what's he gonna talk about? How women flee him? As I saw someone else say on the timeline "are the successful relationships in the room with us"? This is especially odd if the spec is true and he and Natalia broke up off-screen prior to the start of the season. Eddie, you just saw Buck have yet another failed relationship with woman #4 and your thought is that HE'S the one best suited to talk to your son? These two men are so queer and so dumb, but their hearts are in the right place.

Okay, moving on to EW article #2 linked here. Here I'm shifting a little bit more to Tim Minear, and what he's said before in the past as showrunner about Buck, Eddie, the buddifer dynamic and the buddie ship.

I have a love-hate relationship with Tim. On one hand, I think he's a far better showrunner than Kristen (for OG 911, 911 Lonestar does and always will suck ass). But on the other hand, I remember some of the things he said back when season 2 was airing. It's part of the reason why I can't take things like "he's so cute. he gets that a lot" or "does this boycrush on eddie mean you're over abby" or "you two have an adorable son" or any Big Buddie fanservice line in season 2 seriously or as any definitive proof of anything. Tim has openly admitted most of those were in season 2 to throw shippers a bone. Not to be taken seriously. And that didn't sit right with me. Very obviously, there was a shift in season 3 and no longer was buddie and shippers the butt of the joke. Season 3 is when I genuinely think the writers and Tim shifted from "haha this is funny" to "oh wait, maybe there IS something here" and obviously The Powers That Be (Fox) had some control over whether or not that happened and is honestly why I think it didn't happen in season 5 or 6 where it realistically could've fit very well after s4.

So firstly, please take everything I say with a grain of salt because Tim is a Known Liar and Word Twister and is very VERY good at saying a lot while absolutely saying nothing at all.

5. So...I find what he says in this article interesting because it's not in the first article. First, his word choice is very interesting. Using both "friendship" and "coupling" in the same sentence, which have two different connotations. Secondly, he says that "at their core" their relationship is about their friendship. When something is the core of something else, that doesn't mean that's all there is. The core may be the essence, or the foundation, or the glue of something. But it is something that is BUILT UPON, something that extends past the core. To me, it means that while the core of buddie's relationship is their friendship, their relationship encompasses much more than that. It's like those successful old married couples who say the key to being married happily for 50+ years is that "we're still best friends" or that "the key to a successful romantic relationship is having that foundation of strong friendship" etc. Now, I'm not SAYING this means canon buddie, but I just find it interesting that this is how Tim chose to describe them this time around. To me, that says Tim is very much aware that there's far more to be explored in their relationship than just their friendship. Whether that means far more buddifer family arcs, or an actual real exploration of Buck and Eddie as a romantic couple, I'm very excited to see where it goes.
