The Advent of Ardor: Post-Mortem/Epiphany
So! I meant to do this in the short days after my 12 days of Hannigram fic wrapped up, but then, y'know. Life! Here are some additional thoughts, and more on the thematic gifts and meals for each day. There are many spoilers ahoy.
I had the idea for a 12 days of Christmas fic in November, because I'd bitten off way more than I could chew trying to do Kinktober in my first year writing. 12 days seemed more reasonable, especially when I discovered that the 12 days actually start ON Christmas, and it became even more doable. So I went and did it.
I had planned from the beginning for each of the 12 gifts to reflect the number of the day, in some ways obvious and others more abstract. The gifts were:
A single book on Scandinavian woodworking (which also shows up in another fic of mine, a fictionalized nod to Mads' Danish heritage and also that my friend is obsessed with a book she has on Scandinavian woodworking)
A pair of cufflinks - the classic, simple sterling silver wrapped around wood felt so right for the two of them. You get it.
Triple-casked whisky (I wanted some of his earlier gifts to feel obvious, as if Hannibal intentionally is throwing him off the scent of how much thought he put into them)
A four-aging knife. I know. I hated myself for that one, too.
A pair of gloves. Will's comment about how it would've better suited the tenth day, on account of the five fingers x two, was me realizing that after I'd already written it. It felt suitable - Hannibal had noticed Will's hands were getting cold. He wouldn't want to wait five days. Maybe he'd had another gift planned originally and bumped up the gloves for practicality's sake. Also, glove kink had featured prominently in my first Hannigram fic Who Will I Be Tonight, and it felt right. In my head, Will Graham canonically has a thing for leather gloves.
A six-pack of New Orleans' classic beer Abita. I've never tried it. I'd like to.
A song. This one, I was giddy to get to. There are seven notes on a traditional musical scale. Of course Hannibal would have a secret baroque music room at his Canadian safehouse.
A chess set. I was cheating the 8 of it a bit, but a chess board is 8x8 squares, combined to make 64. Listen. 8 was tricky to do without it just being a pun on ate.
This one came to me as I was falling asleep and I said "oh, shut up" out loud to myself. I knew I wanted to incorporate Dante's Inferno and the nine circles of hell, but how? I considered some sort of woodcut print or early edition of the book, but Will already had a book and Hannibal would never repeat himself. Then, I considered how that particular interpretation of Hell has frozen over, and it all came together. Fun fact that I kept waiting for someone to notice but I'm impatient: all the names of the circles of hell are hidden within the text of the chapter. Find them all!
For the life of me, I could not think of something for 10. Probably because I'd messed up with the gloves and my brain was stuck on it. So I went for a classic - Will's fly-tying. What an utterly twisted gift.
What comes in elevens? Nothing. I had to resort to googling and when I discovered that the Canadian maple leaf has 11 points, it all came together in a snap. The coin toss wrote itself.
The dozen roses I knew before I started writing. Disgustingly romantic. How would you get a dozen roses in January in the Canadian wilderness? The answer is magic, because Hannibal is the devil.
Some inspirations for the gifts in question:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, there's the foods. I, somehow, hadn't even considered also theming them to the 12 days of Christmas. Then, after the 3rd day had already been posted, I started goofing on the idea with a friend and she laid out, in like 20 minutes, perfectly appropriate recipes for each day. I went back and edited, and then continued with them. I tried to make some of them subtle, so Will's late realization wasn't TOO embarrassing. I mean, it took him 'til season 2 to figure out Hannibal was the Chesapeake Ripper. There's some leeway with his observational skills. ANYWAY.
Partridge in a Pear Tree: Poached pears. Simple enough.
Turtle doves: Squab! Usually a baby pigeon, but sometimes a dove or chicken. Bit of a stretch, but the other option was Turtles chocolates and that felt a bit beneath Hannibal.
French Hens: Croque Madame! A twist on the classic French Croque Monsieur, with the difference being an egg on top. This one I came up with, and I was rather pleased with myself.
Calling Birds: Lotta birds up top in this song. Real bird-heavy, so we got creative - four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie became blackberry pie.
Golden Rings: He made onion rings. My friend said I could do better than that but I liked it too much. So stupid.
Geese A-Laying: Foie gras, which was especially funny because I had already written a joke about Hannibal not wanting to overwhelm Will with foie gras too soon in an early chapter.
Swans A-Swimming: I'll give it to my friend on this, she's a genius. She suggested Pavlova, a meringue dish named after Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Ballet = Swan Lake. A stretch, but one Hannibal would surely delight in making.
Maids A-Milking: Here, Will finally puts it together. I'm lactose intolerant, this chapter was a horror story for me. Hannibal makes Panna Cotta, a sweet cream custard. 8 kinds of dairy in one day. I'd rather a knife to the gut.
Ladies Dancing: Tiramisu, which is made with cookies/biscuits traditionally known as Lady Fingers.
Lords A-Leaping: Frog's legs. I had a lot of ideas for this one, but then frog's legs came up and they went in the trash.
Pipers Piping: Eclairs, a piped pastry. Someone commented that this was an appropriately filthy dish to follow their consummation, and though I hadn't intended it, I absolutely agree. Perverts.
Drummers Drumming: This one was pretty straightforward, but my friend came up with the giant raviolo and asparagus drumsticks. Obviously, chicken drumsticks were considered, but raviolo felt so much more Hannibal.
I think that's all. I'm sure this is of interest to maybe one person, but I wanted to write it down for posterity.
Thanks for reading!! xoxo.

brownie update: swirling crunchy peanut butter through the batter is great. swirling it through only when it's already in the pan, so you get attractive golden marbling and a distinct top layer of crisp crunchy peanut butter brownie goodness, is even better.
(original recipe)
general notes:
— if adding peanut butter, you might need to heat it up a little in the microwave to thin it out enough first. the weight recommended for nuts in the recipe works fine.
— you can in fact substitute both eggs for one banana - I blended it rather than mashing it because I don't like lumps - and yes the result does taste like banana.
— you can also substitute butter for oil: use around 7.5 tablespoons. you might need to add a few tablespoons of water to make the mixture behave; butter does have water in it too. (I started doing this because I like shelf-stable ingredients and kept doing it because lactose intolerance. ideal.)
— personally I deliberately overbake these a touch because I've had too many "oh that's a volcano in the middle" Underbaking Events, and even aside from them, the middle pieces can be very soft.
— you can use a 9" round cake tin if you don't have an 8x8 square tin - it's almost exactly the same area and I've tested it - it's just a bit of a faff to cut up neatly. any tin smaller than the one recommended will lead to Underbaking Events no matter how much extra time you add.
— in british terms the oven temp is pretty much 160 C. don't use fan.
— I have never bothered with vanilla (I don't bake often enough and time is fake so it's a "blink and it's expired" situation) and it's fine
— the "pop it in the freezer for a bit so it cuts neatly" advice in the recipe is magic, actually
— these freeze fine! just keep the pieces separated if you want to defrost them individually.

The magic ingredient in these brownies is sweetened condensed milk, which makes them rich and fudgy and also very easy to make. The chocolate makes the brownies sweet, moist, and creamy, making them impossible to resist.
Ingredients: 1 can sweetened condensed milk. 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour. 1/2 cup melted butter. 2 eggs. 1 tsp vanilla extract. 1/4 tsp salt. 1/2 cup chocolate chips optional.
Instructions: Warm the oven up to 175F 350C. Melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, salt, and sweetened condensed milk should all be mixed together in a bowl. Mix everything together well. You can add chocolate chips if you want to. Put the batter into an 8x8-inch baking dish that has been greased. If you stick a toothpick into the middle and it comes out with moist crumbs instead of wet batter, the cake is done. Let it cool down before you cut it into squares. Serve and have fun!

2024-08-24: Hex 24 (Forest)
Branches sway and creak in a steady rhythm above, as though they are each trying to relay a message to their neighbor.
Notable Feature: Dungeon (Burnweed Bill's Brutal Butterfly Ballad)
Small Dungeon, 5 areas
A traveling musician (Elena de la Cruz) heard snippets of an otherworldly song coming from the middle of this hex while she was passing through, but was unable to approach the source of the sound because she was attacked by butterflies. These weren't just any butterflies, but dog-sized ones. An entire swarm of these giant butterflies is circulating through this hex, and they are under the control of a druid named Burnweed Bill.
The source of the music Elena heard is coming from a perfectly spherical boulder that intermittently plays otherworldly tones. The boulder's music serves two purposes: transmit instructions for the butterflies to follow, and to draw people to the boulder so that the butterflies may use these folks as a food source for their huge proboscis. Each day, the song gets a little louder, making it a little more likely that more people will hear enough of the songs to be compelled to travel to the singing stone. Because Elena was attacked by butterflies before she could hear enough of the music, she was able to get away.
Now Elena wants to transcribe some of the music, thinking it will provide a boost to her career. She just needs the party to stop Burnweed Bill while also keeping the boulder intact. If the party can do this, Elena can transcribe the song to play with non-magical instruments. As a reward, Elena will compose a song about the party's exploits that will provide advantage on CHA checks the party makes involving people who have heard the song.
Hidden: Backyard Exploration
In a particularly dense stretch of forest, there is a square cabin that is incredibly small (8x8 feet). This cabin is the home of Justin Boudreaux, an agoraphobic hermit who subsists on plants that grow near his home, which is the only part of "outside" he can tolerate because the trees are so dense here. Justin recently tried to explore the land outside this hex after seeing a beautiful bird that he had never seen before, and it reminded him of the time before he became a hermit when he could travel the world freely. Unfortunately, this attempt ended badly when the tree cover opened up and he was forced to retreat back to his tiny cabin.
He asks the party to capture a specimen of this bird alive, telling them it came from the hex just south his cabin (outside the sandbox) and flew back that way when the bird was disturbed. Perhaps having the bird would motivate Justin to try to explore the world again.
Hidden: Fire In The Hole!
An old wooden structure that is the ruins of some sort of chapel still provides a small degree of protection from the elements. Curled up on the floor is a badly-burned woman who is covered in bandages. The woman is Cathelijne Schutte, who explains that she is traveling to the east to the settlement of Tabremont but was accosted by a group of fire-breathing alligators in the wetlands southeast of the hex (outside the sandbox). Cathelijne was barely able to escape and make it back here. She asks the party if they would slay these magical monstrosities (she's aware there are at least 4) so she can continue her journey to town.
Cathelijne is telling the truth about the fire-breathing alligators, but is lying about travel plans. She is a professional thief who tracks down and "recovers" items from magic vaults. Tabremont is just a convenient cover story to explain why she's traveling through an uninhabited stretch of wetland. She found the vault, but accidentally set off its defensive measures and got burned. The vault itself is still well-hidden, and Cathelijne thinks that the party would be able to track down the alligators without discovering the entrance to the vault and jeopardizing her haul.

Prickly Pear Gum Drops Ingredients: 1/2 cup ripe prickly pear cactus fruit peeled, pureed and de-seeded 1 1/2 cups plain no sugar added applesauce 3 teaspoons of powdered pectin I used Sure Jell 2 1/2 cups sugar divided Sugar for dusting each gumdrop at the end Instructions: Spray an 8 x 8 glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Then set it aside. In a large saucepan, combine the pureed and de-seeded prickly pear cactus fruit with the applesauce. Whisk the pectin and a ½ cup sugar together in a small bowl. Once mixed well, add to the cactus fruit. Clip a candy thermometer onto the side of your saucepan and bring your mixture to a boil. Whisk in the remaining 2 cups of sugar. Bring everything to a boil and stir constantly until your mixture reaches 225°. (this took me less than 5 minutes) Remove from saucepan from the heat. (and shake your arm from all that stirring!) Pour the hot mixture into your 8x8 prepared glass dish. When slightly cool (about an hour), sprinkle sugar on top. Allow to set several hours (this is going to vary depended on your weather, humidity outside/inside. I'm recommend letting them dry at least 12 hours. (Seems like 12+ is the magic number so plan ahead) Once the candy is mostly set, enough to cut, cut your mixture into 1-inch squares, or use a mini cookie cutter sprayed with non-stick cooking spray to make hearts, flowers, whatever - though if you plan to use anything other than just a sharp knife, you might need to let them dry even longer, though they will dry better when cut. Dredge in some sugar and allow to dry another 6+ hours or overnight on a piece of parchment paper. Store covered for up to two weeks. https://www.instagram.com/p/CffrFbXr9s2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Greetings, darlings!
Tonight, I wanted to show you how I make my sigils. Before we get into it, I’d like to start by saying that this is my preference and that this does not invalidate any other sigil-making processes. I like geometric shapes and I’m not really a talented artist so that’s why I do it this way.
That way is using magic squares that coincide with your dominate planet. I’m a Gemini and that means my planet is Mercury. This is going to make for a good example because my magic square is going to be 8x8 and a little more confusing looking so if you can understand something as big as Mercury’s than you’ll do just fine ♥️
Step one: draw the magic square you’ll be using
Tumblr media
Step two: choose a word or phrase that you would like to make into a sigil. For this example, I used the word protection
Tumblr media
Step three: cross out repeat letters
Tumblr media
Step four: assign remaining letters numbers
Tumblr media
Step five: chart this unto your magic square
Tumblr media
Now I circled 16 because that’s going to remind me where I start this sigil
Step six: finish off your sigil and then copy it off the square so you can see the end result clearer
Tumblr media
So you can see, my circle marks the beginning and the small ‘-‘ at the end is the close.
Finally, charging and casting. For this, I’m going to meditate on this symbol and my intention I assigned to it. Then when I feel that the energy is thoroughly associated with the sigil, I cut it out and either throw it away or I burn it, depends on where I am and who’s around.
A natal chart will tell you your dominate planet and then just look up that planet’s magic square. HOWEVER upon further searching, I found that there are only seven magic squares for the original celestial bodies that were recognized. If your planet doesn’t have one, use this link to find which magic square would work well with your intention.

See I've had this thought.
I think it's very much eighth child of an eighth child, genders be damned and if a person turns out to be a wizard all comes down to the belief that they will or won't be one.
So if a woman was an eighth child and had eight kids with a wizard, I figure the maths works out to make like a super sourceror.
Cos if the magical potential is squared for a wizard's eighth child to be a sourceror, adding in the 8x8 to create a wizard would be 8x8x8 + 8x8, right?
Hey totally random question about Discworld
A wizard is an 8th son of an 8th son. But in reality the 8th child of an 8th child can be a wizard, but women aren't supposed to be wizards.
If an 8th daughter had her 8th child with a wizard, would that make the child a sorcerer? Would the child even be a wizard?

Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars
These Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars are a MUST for your next party! Think: Super Bowl, office party, or birthday. They have a pretzel crust with layers of peanut butter, chocolate, coconut, and sweetened condensed milk topped with more pretzels.

Have you ever had a magic cookie bar? They’re shaggy little squares of graham cracker, coconut, chocolate, butterscotch chips, and condensed milk.
This is an amalgam of pantry goods that, when combined, make for much more than the sum of their parts.
A NEW RIFF ON MAGIC BARS
And while I do love a good old magic cookie bar, for me, the original version leans a little too sweet. So, I made a version with pretzels and peanut butter to bring some salty balance to the party (salt + sugar is my baking language).
The results are these cookie bars layered with a sandy pretzel base, chewy coconut, peanut butter chips, and chocolate chips, bound together with sweetened condensed milk fortified by peanut butter.
They are at once, sticky, chewy, crunchy, sweet, salty, and totally craveable.
TIPS FOR BAKING THESE BARS
To make sure the center of these bars set enough to slice, be sure to bake them until the edges caramelize and turn golden. Then cool them completely to room temperature for a few hours before cutting.
When you are ready to remove the bars from the pan and cut them, run a knife around the edges and gently turn out the bars. They should be firm enough to handle but the crust can crumble a bit.
Cut into squares with a serrated knife.
MAKE-AHEAD AND STORE (OR FREEZE!)
You can also make these bars a day ahead. Just cover the pan of cooled bars in foil and leave them on the counter.
The sliced bars can be stored at room temperature for up to 5 days. Store them with parchment between the layers or individually wrapped in plastic wrap (easy for grab-and-go treats!).
The bars can also be frozen for up to a month, either individually wrapped in plastic, or with parchment between the layers. Place the bars inside a freezer bag with as much air pressed out as possible.
To thaw, remove the bars from the bag and let them thaw at room temperature.

Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars Recipe

These bars are quite rich and decadent. Cut into 25 squares if serving at a potluck or large gathering, or into 16 squares if you're in the mood for a bigger treat.
Ingredients
4 cups (160 g) salted mini pretzels, plus additional for the top
1/2 cup (4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
3 tablespoons sugar
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (397g), divided
1/4 cup (57g) smooth peanut butter
3/4 cups (100g) peanut butter chips
1/2 cup (100g) mini chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups (75g) unsweetened coconut flakes
Method
1 Prep for baking: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray or grease an 8x8-inch square baking pan and line the bottom and two sides with parchment paper.
2 Make the crust: Add the pretzels to the bowl of a food processor and pulse until most of the pretzels are fine crumbs with a few larger bits (no larger than the size of a pea). You can also crush the pretzels in a bag with a rolling pin.
Pulse in the butter and sugar (or stir together in a bowl). It should hold together when pressed together with your palm but it’s sandier than a graham cracker crust.
Press the pretzel mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Use the bottom of a measuring cup or glass to really compact the mixture.
3 Bake the crust for 15 minutes. Remove and place on a rack to cool slightly.
4 Warm the peanut butter: Measure out 4 tablespoons of the condensed milk into a bowl and set to the side to use later. In a 2-cup measuring glass, combine the peanut butter and remaining condensed milk and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir the mixture until smooth.
5 Assemble the layers: Spread half of the coconut onto the pretzel crust, followed by half of the peanut butter chips and chocolate chips.
Pour the peanut butter and condensed milk mixture over the top and repeat the layers of coconut and chips. Arrange a few whole pretzels on top and drizzle with the reserved condensed milk.
6 Bake the bars: Bake on the center rack of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until the edges are just golden around the edges.
7 Cool and store: Remove from the oven and cool completely on a rack before cutting. Use a serrated knife to slice into 16 large bars or 25 bite-sized bars.
Magic bars will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days.
