Lottie is the good girl, queen bee child prodigy pianist of Wiskayok High School

Natalie Scatorccio is the lead singer of a rock band that covers 70's/80's rock classics

Also in the band is Shauna Shipman as lead guitarist and Jackie Taylor on Bass with Van Palmer on Drums

Shauna and Jackie are constantly bickering and fighting in the background and lowkey dating

Van is dating Taissa who's in another band but both super supportive of each other

Lottie is under a lot of pressure from her parents and her school and the parents fund the school to give Lottie every chance at practising piano and she wins loads of trophies for the school trophy case. a win win scenario for the school and her parents

Lottie and Nat used to be childhood best friends till Lottie's family put a stop to it and made Lottie focus on Piano instead.

Piano has now become a chore for Lottie and she wishes she could do something for herself for just once

Battle of the bands is coming up and the band decide they need a keyboardist.

Jackie designs a flyer and sticks the up around school but the jocks, aka jeff and randy stick Lotties recital flyer over them

jackie doesn't even notice and is ecstatic that her flyers came out okay while Shauna massively rolls her eyes in the background.

Lottie sees the flyer sticking out behind one the recital flyers and decides to show up to their rehersal.

Nat is an immediate "no" to the idea but the rest of the band wouldn't mind.

"I don't need to, I just need the sheet music and I am good to go" - Lottie

"I like her"- Shauna to which Jackie bickers with her about

Natalie comes around to the idea when they play Everybody wants to Rule the world and it sounds a million times better with the keyboard in it.

She makes Lottie mixtapes and quizzes her on the music when the bands meets privately.

They start to bond and slowly fall for each other

Nat turns the mic to look at Lottie when singing and sings certain lines of songs to make her see her feelings

Shauna and Jackie pick up on the lingering looks between the two girls

"somebody's got a crush" - Shauna sing songs to nat

"I do not" - nat

"Oh really? how come you've never sung crimson and clover to me like that then Nat?" - jackie presses with a smile

"oh shut the f*ck up weirdos" - nat and storms out the door with that knowing smile on her face

Lottie makes Nat listen to one classical song for her

"No, when I say I like 70's music, I don't mean the 1700's" - Nat jokes

"Come on, I've listened to all your songs, please listen to just one for me??" - lottie pleads with her doe eyes

"Fine" - Nat says and the opening melody to Clair De Lune plays

Nat never knew that stupid old classical music could be so beautiful.

Nat and Lottie lock eyes as the music swells

Nat pictures Lottie playing the song, her fingers dancing on the keys with her face locked in concentration.

The song made her want to actually see Lottie play

See what all the hype is about

But then the cold front comes up from Nat and she remembers how Lottie shut her out

When the song ends, Nat turns to make a quick exit but Lottie grabs her hand.

"Thanks for listening" - lottie, and nat leaves

On the next mixtape, clair de lune is tucked into the playlist.

That's pretty much all I got at the moment, but i'd love for someone to write a proper fanfiction of this. I have tons of ideas but just not the time to write at the moment.

Well, based on the various glimpses into the mixtapes for El, we can deduce that Mike is a fan of romantic, classic rock ballads, so REO Speedwagon, Corey Hart, etc. Then, taking into account the other music incorporated into the show, Journey is an option, and further expanding into that genre, you could have Kansas, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Eagles, and other bands and singers with a foundation in rock but with the emerging synth trend thrown in the mix. For specific songs, we know he likes “Can’t Fight this Feeling” and “No Surrender”, but I could also see him liking “Any Way You Want It” and “Don’t Stop Believin’”.

El is interesting, though. She has no exposure to popular music until she leaves the lab. It’s not a big focus during her week at the Wheeler’s, so the first time we see her deliberately exposed to music is Jim Croce. After spending a year with Hopper, she’s likely grown an affinity for that folksy, singer-songwriter genre. Creedence Clearwater Revival would be a good option as well. Heavy emphasis on drum and guitar melodies to carry the songs, but not over-produced, and with a focus on interesting lyrics.

Then, we circle back to classic rock with Mike, and later 80’s synth-pop with Max, specifically Madonna. We know Max’s taste consists of female singers, so El likely heard a lot of that as she got to know Max. There’s no doubt that Max played her some Kate Bush, but you could also include Cyndi Lauper and Pat Benatar, again using the choices made in the show as a guide, and other singers with a heavy focus on female empowerment.

Overall, though, we don’t have a sense of El’s taste yet, and I think that’s on purpose. She’s still forming her personality and identity. Ultimately, I think she has a very eclectic taste in music, so you can’t go wrong. She tends to absorb the tastes of whoever she is closest to at any given moment. Though, depending on when you set the AU, I’d avoid bubblegum Top 40. Popular songs are fine, but El would likely listen to songs with meaning and intention. She’s spent her life finding a voice, so she’d gravitate towards other people who have something to say with their music. I think The Beatles would fascinate El because of how experimental and expansive their discography is. She’d like how they can go from “Yellow Submarine” to “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” to “Hey Jude” and so on, and so forth. That last part is entirely my own headcanon.

For more modern artists, in keeping with that romantic, ballad vibe, I think Mike would like Coldplay, OneRepublic, Imagine Dragons, and Fun, and songs like “Some Nights”, “Paradise”, and “Connection”.

El would keep her love of old music, especially if you have Hopper as her father-figure, but I could see Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, TLC, Beyoncé, and Spice Girls from her influence by Max, and the ones I mentioned above from her influence by Mike. She’s still very much a chameleon with her interests, so anything goes. I think she’d also love more indie stuff, and she’d be particularly skilled at finding up-and-coming artists. Again, she’d find people who have something to say and a unique voice.

At the end of the day, these are my opinions, and I’m not as well-versed as I could be on some of these genres, so feel free to take these suggestions or not at your own discretion. The music in the show is just as tied to the themes and messages as any other element, so it’s good to want to make deliberate choices for that, even in fan fiction! Let me know your thoughts!

a/n: kinda plotless and just mindless word throw up because im a homeless romantic who’s whipped for tsukishima, plus it’s my 500 follower special ✋🏻😌

you and tsukishima always had quite the simple romance. the only factor that was not exactly simple was that it was tsukishima who confessed first one september day. it was early in the morning the moment the sky bled its onyx night sky into an orangey-dawn.

you had barely left the safe confines of your home when the tall blond that waited outside your door in the crisp autumn air had nonchalantly confessed. usually it was him and yamaguchi waiting for you, but you figured he made his best friend walk ahead in order to be alone with you.

it was quite surprising, really. you assumed that all you were to tsukishima was nothing but a friend, someone so annoyingly bearable that he only let you stick around because you made him bentos once in a while. and in a surprising turn of events, you accepted his feelings and the two of you have been dating primarily on the low.

having your relationship known wasn’t exactly your main priority and neither was tsukishima’s. especially considering that if his volleyball team found out, they wouldn’t leave you alone for a second without bombarding you about why you would end up with someone as salty as him. the funny thing was that you often asked yourself that as well, but with how simple your romance was, there was nothing more to answer that question besides the fact you liked being with him. so you digress.

granted, since your relationship was more or less a secret besides only yamaguchi being aware of this fact, you and tsukishima often had to see each other in away from the sight of others. most of the time is was behind closed doors, but sometimes, sometimes, very early in the mornings you two would have a sweet rendezvous somewhere behind the gym before spending the rest of the hours before school starts on the field.

with you being a member of the track team and tsukishima being in the volleyball club, the field seemed like the only plausible reason why the two of you would be there. every friday morning you two would come early just to run around the track with the cool morning breeze and the tweets of songbirds tweeted among the peaceful silence.

you and tsukishima walked upon school grounds with water bottles in hand and your walkmans in the other. you had recently gotten a new one for your birthday, the latest 1984 Sony Walkman that was progressively better in sound quality than your boyfriend’s old 1982 model, to which he stated, “how much better can it be when your music taste is trash?”

you rolled your eyes and ran ahead of him. he gets quite annoyed when you do that as he isn’t necessarily the fastest runner. the only reasons why he does these morning runs is to be with you, so you ditching made him put on that cute pout you can’t resist. besides, you would reward him with a heated make out session behind the gym or the storage closet in return.

ten laps around the track was all you two ran, occasionally making small talk on the most existential topics on whether or not aliens exist or the stupid hypothetical questions about a zombie apocalypse—to which tsukishima would tease you and say he would feed you to the zombies. but it wasn’t to say that sometimes waves of comfortable silence wouldn’t fall upon you two. you concluded that no matter what, you would always find yourself in this type of tranquil silence with tsukishima. you had even forgotten your boyfriend’s stares of admiration, rather, you didn’t actually know if his gazes were of malice, indifference, or adoration, but whatever it was you hoped it was something good.

despite dating for a year now, you still couldn’t tell the difference, but you knew deep inside your gut that was accompanied by the same butterflies that all he means is nothing but love. and you wished to show that love as today was your anniversary.

and to which tsukishima thought you couldn’t get more breathtaking than the last time you had been at each other’s companies just yesterday, it seemed he had been proven wrong. you were teeth stark against the moonlight, divulged in night torn howls of winds and slick with honor. even at your worst, with skin frayed with abrasions and scrapped knees, tsukishima still found light within your fondness. and right now, you were filled with ichor of charming homemade raptures. your boyfriend couldn’t fathom how beguiled he was for a girl he hadn’t thought of more than an add on to his friendship with yamaguchi.

after your run, you two found yourselves resting upon the bleachers near the baseball field. you rested your legs atop tsukishima’s as he fiddled with your walkman. your headphones were now rested over your boyfriend’s ears as he listened to your curated mixtape of songs you specifically listened to on your runs with tsukishima. the songs that you burned on it were special to you and him and to you and him only. the songs that reminded you two of your first date during the night when you breathed out against the late night’s mist, inhaling the stars as you and tsukishima walked hand in hand through the city—of his quips of banter, his wisecracks of pleasantries, even his annoyingly amiable witticisms that would often put you in your place of not being as clever as your boyfriend—had a special place in your heart.

your gaze, warm in admiration as you looked upon his handsome features, took him in like a breath of fresh air. he was bobbing his head lightly to the music. it made a smile melt upon your face as your thoughts were scattered by the wind (a mere light breeze) as you exhaled your silk promises. your bare knuckles grazed over his as your hand lifted to his face, running your hand through his messy blond hair.

within seconds, the mixtape clicked to an end to which tskushima kissed your palm messing at his hair as he sat up. “this is actually good,” he mutters. “perhaps your music taste isn’t as bad as i remembered.”

“that’s funny considering most of my past music taste was from you.” you jested with a smirk on your lips.

he scoffs playfully, pecking your lips quickly. “yeah right, the majority of your mixtapes were nothing but queen and abba.”

“please tell me you’re not trashing queen and abba,” you rolled your eyes and feigning offense, “they’re literally iconic.”

“if you added some mötley crüe or tears of fears, maybe it would be better.” tsukishima smirks, making you huff. “but it’s fine as since it is our anniversary today, i figured i would be nice.”

“do you want to give our gifts now?” 

tsukishima nods as he smiles, “so i can listen to it throughout the day.”

your eyebrows furrow together in confusion, “how’d you know i was going to give you a mixtape?”

“mere intuition,” your boyfriend jokes, causing you to shake your head as you reached into your backpack’s front pocket. “i actually burned you one too.” tsukishima did the same as the two of you faced each other once more with mixtapes in both your hands.

your fingers brushed each others briefly as you two traded gifts. and despite contact between the two of you hadn’t been scarce, there was still that same spark and radiating warmth that would consume you two.

both had cute notes attached to it as you had both read it.

FOR MY LOVE: the first mixtape of yours that isn’t complete rubbish and the first mixtape given to you for your new 1984 Sony Walkman that you won’t stop talking about. i don’t have to worry about you liking these songs because i know you will since i know you so well. i’ve also come to notice that you like to mix severely opposite genres on one tape i.e fleetwood mac and metallica like an absolute monster. so i did that on this tape for your sake. i love you, idiot.  —tsukishima kei

you two sit in silence for bit, doing nothing more but being in each other’s presence and embrace. letting the world before you continue to move as you looked at the tape’s songs. you were immediately struck with the feeling of the nostalgic nights with tsukishima, laughing in the dark at two in the morning of messing around and reassuring pats on the back. you two were quilted blankets and moonless nights, of warm sunspots on a cloudy day, and cherry blossom petals falling upon your hair without noticing. you were tsukishima’s cure to boredom and lack of sleep. you two were each other’s everything.

it was your simple romance.

This show is so lucky to have so many incredible authors. I compiled a sizable list of my favorites at the bottom of this post. Definitely take a look at the authors on there because you really can’t go wrong with any of them. And once you get through their works you can check their bookmarks because they’re sure to have impeccable taste.

But THE wayhaught fic? I’m gonna have to go with the ‘80s Mixtape AU by @piratekane and @iamthegaysmurf. This one is a staple of the wayhaught fic canon and something it seems like everyone has read. The only reason it isn’t listed above is because I hadn’t read it when I made the list!

This fic series has inspired many other folks to write their own 80’s AU fics, create art, post themed photo ops, create playlists, and craft other fandom content.

I just feel that if you haven’t read this series you’re missing out on a lot of other fandom content since you probably won’t realize what it is in reference to. It’s a very ambitious read so suit up with your reading pants on!

Holmes Chapel, 1985 - Best friends since childhood, you and Harry have grown up to lead lives on opposite ends of the spectrum. He travels the world as a journalist for Rolling Stone. You’re stuck in your hometown, waitressing at a diner. You and Harry keep in touch through letters and postcards until the day he returns home and flips your world upside-down. 

This month’s featured story, Love Always, Harry, takes us back to the 80s when we raid record stores with our best friends and send letters to each other as we travel! This fic tells a beautiful love story that blossoms between two best friends who are so different, yet similar in many aspects. Read below to learn more about it from our interview with the lovely author!

How long have you been writing for?

I had always been coming up with little stories in my head, but the first time I actually wrote a story down was when I was ten years old. My class had just finished reading Old Yeller and I was really upset about the ending, so I wrote my own version of the story where the wolf bite ends up giving Yeller superpowers instead of rabies, and Yeller uses those powers to fight crime in the town (very highbrow stuff). I haven’t stopped writing since then!

Do you have certain habits or rituals you have to do while writing?

So before I start writing, I have to clean my room or whatever area I’m in. I tend to talk aloud to myself and pace around a lot if I’m trying to work through any snarls in the fic so I need plenty of clean space for that. The first things I pull up on my laptop when I’m starting out are my fic outline and thesaurus.com. I read through the outline a few times to smooth over the scene and get a clear picture of it in my head. Also, I turn into a bit of a hermit when I’m really ready to write. I have to be alone and I need complete silence because I have a goldfish’s attention span and get sidetracked very easily.

The ever famous question: how did you come up with this idea?

I really like the whole “opposites attract” trope and I think showing that dynamic within a close friendship is really interesting because (most) friendships have a stronger, more enduring bond than (most) romantic relationships. So I knew I wanted the story to revolve around two best friends – one who is really confident and more of a free-spirit, and the other who is very reserved and a bit cautious – who fall in love. I also wanted the characters to write letters to each other because I just love the idea of them. I think it’s so sweet when someone takes time to sit down and write out a letter; it adds a nice personal touch.

When does a story go from an idea in your mind to paper? Is there a process you go through before writing it out, or do you just get straight in it?

Some of my writer friends can just dive in and write absolutely beautiful pieces without planning and it makes me so jealous because for me, it takes a loooong time for an idea to go from my mind to paper. I usually have a few different AUs brewing at a time, and I cycle through them until one idea starts to branch off on its own and grow into a Thing that takes up 95% of my daydream capacity. Once I’ve decided on the basic story, I write everything out in an extremely detailed outline that describes the characters and their personalities, and breaks the story down into parts, what events happen in each part, etc.

Your fic is set in the late 1980’s, was there a specific reason for it?

When I decided I wanted to write a fic based around the idea of sending letters, I knew I would have to set it in an earlier decade. It wouldn’t have been realistic to set it in 2019 and have Harry and MC send letters back and forth when they could easily text, call, FaceTime, or stay in touch through social media.

I chose the 80s on a whim. I really love the aesthetic of that era, and after I had an 80s movie marathon I could see Harry fitting perfectly in that time with his cuffed jeans, and Vans, and high-waisted pants.

As a young adult in 2019, how did you find writing a story set in a different time period?

I had a TON of fun writing it, but it involved significantly more research than a fic set in present day. I had to do a lot of research for the little things that make an appearance in the story and make sure that they were actually around in 1985/1986 (i.e., the books on Harry’s nightstand in his room, the candy Harry and MC share when they’re smoking, the VHS tapes, the magazine that the MC interviews for).

I also had to be cognizant of not overdoing the pop culture references in that time. Sometimes after reading over first drafts of the installments, I would find sentences that essentially sounded like, “MC threw on her neon leg warmers before she grabbed her Walkman and listened to a mixtape.” So I edited a lot more to have a balance where I could create an 80s atmosphere, but avoid making it sound contrived.

What made you want to write about a girl who sacrificed the things she loved for a secure future? Is this something you’ve ever had to do?

I wanted to write about it because it’s a trend I see so frequently among my friends and my age group. One of my friends is such a talented artist, but she gave that up to study engineering (which she hates); another one of my friends decided not to pursue his passion for music and instead go to pharmacy school (which he hates), solely because it provides a secure future. I think I had to do it to a lesser degree – I wanted a job that involved lots of reading and writing, and I’m pursuing law which has a ton of that but it’s not the publishing or journalism career I had in mind when I was in high school.

Harry and Y/N have a very special bond. Without Harry, would Y/N have married a controlling man like William?

No, she wouldn’t have. I think eventually she would have realized how stifled she was and how she wouldn’t be happy with someone like her fiance. Harry just expedited that realization for her. Without him, she might have called off the wedding five minutes before she was going to walk down the aisle as opposed to months before, but she would never have actually married William.

Y/N’s self-discovery and growth can all be credited to her (for pursuing her dreams and aspirations) but her decision was heavily influenced by Harry. Would a woman like Y/N have gotten to this position without someone like Harry in her life?

Everyone has someone in their life who pushes them to be the best version of themselves, who calls them out whenever they’re falling short of their potential, and essentially tries to get them into gear whether that’s a friend, family member, mentor, or whoever. In the MC’s case, that someone for her is Harry. Without Harry in her life, I think the MC would still have gotten to her position because she has that drive and desire to do so, but it certainly would have taken her a longer time.

There are a lot of artists and bands from the 80s being referenced in this fic, did you have to do research for it or is old music something you have an interest in?

I really love 70s and 80s music because it reminds me of the stuff my parents used to play while I was growing up, but I did still have to do a lot of research for this fic to make sure it was historically accurate. For example, in Part I the MC gets a letter from Harry dated December 7, 1984. I originally wanted Harry to tell her about how he was reviewing a Fleetwood Mac show, but it turns out FM didn’t tour at all in 1984. So a lot of the time I had to research to make sure the dates, the locations, the artists, and the events all matched up with what actually happened.

I also looked up the actual Rolling Stone UK covers from the 80s to see which artists were featured and what year they were featured in to see if it could fit into the storyline. The actual RS archives are available online for a fee and only for the US editions, so I ended up combing through really obscure websites to find the UK versions, and spent hours on that just for the information to feature in like, one or two lines of the fic.

You wrote a very inspirational and powerful piece about self-growth and knowing your worth, did you hope to influence anyone with it?

Honestly, I treat writing as a form of therapy so when I started writing this fic, my intent was just to vent out my own feelings of inadequacy or frustration, and my fear of failure. When I started this, I wrote the characters to mirror the two “voices” I always have in my mind. The MC is the irrational half of me who’s afraid to even attempt new things out of fear of failing and Harry is the more rational half saying I’ll never get anywhere if I don’t at least try. So not to sound like a narcissist, but I think I mainly hoped to influence myself to grow as a person.

That being said, I have received a few messages from readers about how this fic has influenced them to grow, or recognize their self-worth, or make a change in their lives and it absolutely blows me away that anything I’ve written can do that. I cannot explain how honored I am to have played an iota of a role in helping someone decide to improve their lives. It’s been absolutely the most rewarding facet of sharing my writing.

Note: this is an 80′s AU (1989 to be more specific), but maybe it could seem a bit anachronistic. Since it’s my own birthday present, it doesn’t really matter.

In her first day of college, Mei meets Lars. At first they didn’t like each other, until they meet again in a concert. She tells him that she is alone because none of ther friends like that band, and he says that he is in the same situation, so they enjoy the concert together. 

After it he asks for her telephone number. They see each other everyday, even though they don’t study the same. 

They talked about the concert and then they realize they like the same kind of music. They recommend each other songs and bands, and later they spend several afternoons together listening to music. 

It’s that what joins them together. They fall in love slowly and they express their feelings in every song. When they become a couple, he gives her a mixtape.

For the send you a character/au thing,, Henry Dubois + 80s high school au because I'm Diviners trash lmao

I think this is the first time I’ve ever written about MY BOY HENRY, so thank you so much for this LOVELY ASK! 

1. His dad is a super conservative Louisiana congressman. At fifteen Henry ran away, is now living in Cali and making a go of things being a pianist at weddings/bar mitzvahs/funerals ect, although he’s working his way up to playing in the background on music demo tracks. 

2. He and Theta split one of those neat loft apartments artsy people always have in movies. She’s a backup dancer in music videos and they hustle a lot to get each other better gigs, not to mention getting into industry parties for the food. 

3. Cheating a bit, cause he’s not in regular high school, but he’s taking evening classes to get his GED and runs into Ling into the English Lit one, which she’s in just to try and get her diploma early. He’s alright and good at poetry but not particularly bookish, but she doesn’t mess with Humanities bullshit and spends most of her time doodling airplanes and awkwardly staring at Alma, the class’s one (1) good student. 

4. Mixtapes! Makes and listens to them constantly, has a pair of massive orange headphones. Probably a bunch of Bon Jovi. 

5. The most important part of it: PUNK BAND. There is not one single way that an 80′s au for Henry doesn’t include a punk band. It’s called DREAM or something like that. Initially it’s just him and Ling scratching out bits of songs in the back of her pick up truck, but they recruit some more people: Memphis, an up-and-coming amateur poet who does the vocals, Evil O’Neill, the tiny, dynamite electric guitarist, and Sergei, a drummer of mysterious background who sources all the band’s more expensive equipment with the usual explanation that he “knew a guy.” (After Henry recognises the band’s exact, specialised sound system in a rerun of a local Republican rally, he decides to stop questioning where Sergei “permanently borrowed” their equipment from.) 

Initially they practice in Ling’s parents garage, an experience Ling finds absolutely mortifying but that the rest of the band members love because Ling’s mom brings out milk and cookies every forty five minutes and tells them they have a “cool sound.” The eventually move into practicing in an old warehouse, but stuff themselves at the Chan family restaurant after the gigs so Mrs. Chan can feel satisfied that they’ve eaten something at least. 

  Henry, Memphis, and David have songwriting sessions that may or may not feature safe use of mind-altering substances. 

David was the secretary at the first record label Henry tried to pitch he band to. He ends up as the band’s manager, and he and Henry really awkwardly stand around staring at each other when the band wraps up rehearsal until Henry finally asks David out. Their first date was to see Terminator but if primarily involved making out in the back row.
