Final Fantasy VII Review

Year: 1997

Original Platform: PlayStation One

Also available on: PC, PlayStation Store

Version I Played: PlayStation One

Synopsis:

The Shinra Electric Power Company rules over the city of Midgar, and the eco-terrorists AVALANCHE stop at nothing to try and prevent the life essence of the planet from being used as energy. Barrett, leader of AVALANCHE, hires a mercenary named Cloud Strife for their bombing mission on a Shinra Mako Reactor. Cloud doesn’t care much for the greater cause and only wants his pay. But then, after a mission goes awry, he meets Aerith, a flower girl who is the descendant of the Ancients. He quickly finds himself wrapped up in the greater conflict against Shinra.

Gameplay:

Final Fanatasy VII utilizes magic spells via Materia – little orbs that come in a variety of colors pertaining to the natural elements. You can mix and match them on your weapons and equipment, which gives you access to different spells and stats. All your equipment varies with the number of slots for how many Materia orbs you can put in. Leveling up not only upgrades the character but the equipped Materia as well.

Final Fantasy VII also uses an ATB system but is known for introducing Limit Breaks – finishing moves that build up after the character gets hit over time. Final Fantasy VI had a prototype called Desperation Attack – but it was very rare as it only appeared when your character had 1/8 of their total HP, and there was a 1 in 6 chance of performing the Desperation Attack after selecting Attack. I actually had no idea that was a thing until long after I finished the game, and never experienced it when I played Final Fantasy VI.

Graphics:

Out of all the Final Fantasy games, I have to say that this one has not aged well. It has the worst graphics of the entire series. The battle and cinematic graphics are passable.

(Most of the graphics power seemed to be put in Tifa’s, uh, bosom.)

But the characters in towns, the overworld, and in-game cutscenes are incredibly blocky. PC versions are supposedly sharper, but the PlayStation One version makes it nigh impossible to see any facial expressions.

The graphics are definitely a product of its time. I always say that the beginning of 3D gaming was essentially like puberty – awkward and full of zits. It wasn’t yet at that stage where it could be aesthetically pleasing. We marveled about it when it was first released, yes, but then we cringed in retrospect.

The environment backdrops however are probably the strongest points, where they capture the industrial nature of Midgar, the reactors and other such buildings.

Story:

Final Fantasy VII became legendary the minute Square released it. Every aspect was memorable. Part of it could be due to the fact that it was the first Final Fantasy game to enter the 3D realm. Another part was Tetsuya Nomura’s character designs, which hit the cool meter to the point of sub-zero.

The cinematics blew our minds. The opening action scene with Cloud, Barrett, and the rest of AVALANCHE attacking Shinra’s mako reactor is the most memorable opening to a Final Fantasy game. Period. Final Fantasy games really do know how to start at the right spot, no matter how good or bad the overall game is. The opening is always the best part.

Then there was the motorcycle chase. Cid’s airship. The gun fights. Battles with Sephiroth. The extra stuff to find, like summons and extra bosses. So much was jam-packed into the game.

But the story was the primary factor in making VII famous. It’s definitely one of the better ones. Man, the story became so famous that even gamers who haven’t touched a Final Fantasy game knew the major spoilers. It is the equivalent to knowing Darth Vader’s line, “I am your father” without having actually watched Star Wars.

Aerith (Aeris in the English releases) Gainsborough – the innocent flower girl who holds the secrets of the Ancients – develops a romance with Cloud and fucking dies at the end of Disc 1 by the main villain – Sephiroth. The scene shocked everyone and practically made headlines. Everybody has seen the horrible image in one way or another.

It seems to me that since Final Fantasy V, the stories have gotten more and more used to main character deaths, ultimately transforming into a heavy-hitting TV series rather than simply a video game series. In other words – it matured. Looking back, Final Fantasy IV appears to be child’s play and a prototype of later dramatic storylines with fully realized worlds.

Final Fantasy VII was also the first Final Fantasy game to create a world much like ours – one with cars and trains and airplanes and machine guns and even cellphones. The main city of Midgar reflects industrialization at its worst, with miles of slums and claustrophobic cities. Shinra Electric Power Company is a reflection of capitalism at its worst - a single entity in charge of so much that it’s pretty much the government. For the first time in a Final Fantasy game, you play as characters who dance between the morally ambiguous line of terrorism and activism. Funny enough, the theme of neglecting the planet resonates with us now more than ever. This game ended up being rather prophetic about the uncontrollable growth of corporations.

While the story is memorable with many intriguing elements, the plot itself is a tangled web. In my opinion, they really hashed in so many things that it’s easy to forget crucial details. It’s not straightforward, but at the same time everything does connect by the end. While Shinra is the driving force as a whole as the villain, Sephiroth takes over, then you learn about his backstory and then with the evil scientist Hojo and the extra-terrestrial Jenova and then “Weapon” and then the planet’s history and this and that and the other thing.

If I were to put Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VII together and contrast them, as many gamers do, I would find that Final Fantasy VII is the summer blockbuster and Final Fantasy VI is the Oscar winner. Final Fantasy VII started introducing the sappy romance subplot to the series. A love triangle forms among Aerith, Cloud, and Cloud’s childhood friend Tifa. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with having a love triangle, the writing is like watching middle schoolers trying to express their feelings. Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy IV treated any romance with dignity and realism.

But maybe I’m being a bit harsh. After all, Cloud Strife did go through some suffering as an adolescent. His backstory clearly drives his antisocial behavior, so that becomes a good arc.

The goofiest but memorable part of the story deals with Don Corneo and Wall Market and running around store to store doing tasks in order to free Tifa from Don Corneo. It ends with Cloud needing to cross-dress as a woman to get inside Don’s mansion. Because, you know, it’s not like Cloud can just break in with his sword and Aerith’s magic or anything like that. But whatever. It’s anime.

The recent Final Fantasy VII Remake for the PS4 seems to streamline the story, and actually enhances the emotions they were trying to deliver in the original. I will be talking about the remake in a separate post altogether since I’m almost done with it at the time of this writing. But there’s a lot that I want to say about comparing and contrasting the remake and the original.

The latter half of the plot takes a couple weird turns. At one point, Cloud became catatonic and confined to a wheelchair.

That part of the game became the sluggish part for me. Sephiroth also tries to confuse Cloud, which confused me. Cloud apparently suffers from some alternate subconscious mumbo-jumbo and like. . .ungh. I get an aneurysm thinking about it sometimes.

Complicated plotlines like Final Fantasy VII start showing up from here on out in the Final Fantasy series. The trend of bishonen characters also begin here, bishonen being the Japanese term for “beautiful boy.” Cloud and Sephiroth have that look. The series starts hashing in sappier romances and much more of an anime feel.

Final Fantasy VII ultimately marked the start of a new era for the series – introducing both cool and overused tropes.

Music:

Hands down the best Final Fantasy soundtrack of all.

The entire soundtrack of this game is memorable. The opening tune, with its light twinkle when the stars show up, is enough to make any gamer know exactly what that’s from.

With a story set in a more modern world, we have music that is more modern. After Final Fantasy VI had a more serious and operatic score, Uematsu displayed his love of progressive rock here. The motorcycle chase incorporates a lot of synth, which was fitting for zipping through the streets of Midgar. However, Final Fantasy VII is the first Final Fantasy game without that familiar starting bassline for the battle them. The battle theme is instantly recognizable but also radically different from its predecessors. It’s dramatic and displays danger.

Meanwhile, the boss theme is one of the best boss themes in the series, or any video game really. It’s an electrifying progressive rock piece, and it’s my personal favorite boss theme.

The more instrumental pieces are somber, given the dreary atmosphere of the planet. The world map music is very different from its predecessors. It’s romantic one moment, soaring the next, and then dips into foreboding terror. I guess that sums up the story of Final Fantasy VII.

And we cannot leave out One-Winged Angel, which I will talk about below.

Notable Theme:

Without a doubt, One-Winged Angel – played during the terrifying final battle against Sephiroth – is the most memorable piece of music in Final Fantasy VII.

It may very well be the most popular song of the entire series. Nobuo Uematsu was inspired by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. It’s a whopping 30 something minute classical piece. If you look it up on YouTube and browse through it, you can definitely note the similarities. However, Uematsu didn’t want some boring classical introduction to the piece. He wanted to add the destructive impact of rock. The theme has a very distinct stamping-your-foot-down quality to it.

I had noticed a certain piece-by-piece feel of the song and that’s exactly how Uematsu composed it. This is the only song that Uematsu has composed where he created several tunes in his head and then rearranged them to make a single comprehensive song.

If you want to get technical, One-Winged Angel is the first Final Fantasy song with lyrics. The chorus sings in Latin about Sephiroth’s burning anger, with some lyrics actually taken from the medieval poem Carmina Burana. It sounds fantastic when fully orchestrated.

In Advent Children, the animated sequel to Final Fantasy VII, the music is accompanied by hardcore metal. This new rendition really illustrates the destructive power of Sephiroth. Uematsu changed the lyrics for Advent Children. They are more original now. I specifically noticed the lyrics “Veni, veni, mi fili”, which translates to “Come, come, my son.” Sephiroth is inviting you so he can kill you.

Uematsu has stated that the original orchestration didn’t sit well with him. As I suspected, Advent Children’s hardcore metal version is the one he preferred, the one he would have composed had he the technology at the time of Final Fantasy VII.

Verdict:

Another must-play for any RPG fan, even if you think it’s overrated. It’s a must-play because of its popularity, in the same way that people are wide-eyed when you say you haven’t seen Star Wars or such-and-such other popular movie. It’s a whole lot of fun, especially in the scenes that involve other forms of gameplay, such as the motorcycle chase and even a battlefield strategy game in protecting Fort Condor.

Direct Sequel?

Yes – first there was the CGI movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

I actually watched Advent Children before playing Final Fantasy VII. I had already known most of what happened in the game and Advent Children became a monumental craze when it first came out. Everybody was talking about it. Watching the sequel before playing the game skewers your interpretation of things. My first impression of Cloud was that he was always whiny and angsty, and meanwhile Tifa kept nagging him to move on. I felt really bad for Cloud losing Aerith.

Then when I actually played Final Fantasy VII, I saw that Cloud starts as this badass mercenary. Tifa is spunky and clearly is the better choice (IMO) but Cloud is enamored by Aerith after only meeting her briefly. WHAT? Cloud. Bro. Make a move on Tifa, you nitwit. Tifa is AMAZING.

Square Enix then continued the story with Dirge of Cerberus – Final Fantasy VII. This video game sequel focuses on Vincent Valentine, a fan favorite of the original game.

Let me remind you about something – the original game revealed Shinra’s inner deep secret experiments, namely with Sephiroth and Jenova. Dirge of Cerberus introduces an even deeper research team within Shinra called Deepground. I don’t know about you, but it already sounds like the start of a terribly redundant string of sequels, like how the Jason Bourne movies keep revealing an even deeper level of conspiracy theories. Vincent’s mysterious background is now fully revealed. He is defined by – guess what? – another angsty lost lover story, this time with a woman named Lucrecia. Now, okay, look, maybe I’m just being a dick about these types of love stories. But when it keeps popping up within the same series in the same manner, I start asking if you have anything else to offer on your menu.

Lastly, there is the prequel for the PSP – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Of all the games in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core has received the most positive reception. If anything, play that after playing Final Fantasy VII before bothering with anything else.

Oh, and of course there is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which we thought wasn’t going to happen for the longest time but they finally released it in April 2020. More on that later after I finish it, and after I post my entire series of Final Fantasy reviews!

stating if I don’t want to follow the system I can leave he then takes my entire duffel dumps it onto the floor and then rebags it into victoria secret bags then moves it to the front counter so it can be rang in I thought this was a little odd but hey he was doing all the work rebagging it so whatever i’m like dude i’m going to be spending about 8k today all I want to do is come in spend some money get out without any drama what’s the problem whoevers in charge should be thrilled with a sale like this we’re spending 8k keep in mind that I told him that I would do what he wanted and it wasnt’ a big deal and the response was to the effect of stop being lippy and just listen I told him what do you want from me I just agreed with you and said I would use your bags i’m not being lippy at all I know this because I said okay dude not a problem i’ll use your bags his response was maybe if you get to buy it i’m like what are you suggesting that an 8 000 order is something you guys don’t want he’s like yeah if you buy it i’m like dude we are spending 8k today why would I bag up a bunch of stuff and spend 2 3 hours picking our your fabulous product to not buy it anyway so I had 4 credit cards one card had 2 000 one had 3500 one had 2000 and one had 1000 because I am buying for multiple people I had 4 different cards all in my name I wanted one receipt for each card not a big deal to me right wrong again he cited some policy and said if the order is more than 750 items that they aren’t allowed to ring in under 750 items on any one receipt id like to point out that that amount is higher than your employees said they could take as a cash payment I asked him to please show me that I would understand better if I could just read it he was willing to do so he brought out the policy book and to my surprise what it actually said was words to the afffect of cash payments cannot be split up or over 750 items I forget the second half my immediate reply was so what’s the big deal im using credit not cash he snatched the policy book away from me at that point and said you know what you can just listen to me or I don’t have to let you buy anything it’s up to my discretion I then called your orlando outlet and your new jersey outlet and talked to the store managers and cited your policy I was given I asked them to confirm if that was accurate and both said if it was a policy it was news to them I then asked if they would let me buy my order using 4 cards and 4 receipts the woman at orlando said oh my gosh yes we do that every single day I asked if I went to her store if I would have any trouble with this in the future and was told no then she said you can always come down here if you’re in the area and i’ll be happy to take your order after that phone call I tried again here’s the video of that attempt I said listen I have 4 credit cards your register girl said you told her she can’t ring up an order under 750 items that’s 3500 if it’s 5 items not all of my cards have that much I have done multiple receipts every time I came here heck I can even supply them to show it he tells me that because I am order so many items that I can’t have less tan 750 items per receipt so I point around to everyone else and ask what about everyone else you aren’t forcing them to spend a minimum of 750 items what about the final charge i’ll have 750 items for two tickets but the leftover isn’t going to be 750 items you’re not going to let me buy them he shrugged his shoulders to say no at this point I haven’t yelled ive been a bit snarky and sarcastic because I know he’s just giving me a hard time two people ring in our order almost every time I am up there and we were there 3 times in the last 6 months spent a bunch each time so at 730 8pm or so we are done shopping assuming that two people could ring us up ended up being a fantasy he forced one employee only to ring us up later on he comes up when its now close to 9pm and says hey you mind if we ring you up on both registers I chuckle and say no I don’t but you do you don’t want to be breaking that 750 rule do you he glared at me and then sent the employee away and walked off after blinking a few times I laugh because after telling me over and over he couldn’t do it he just got caught trying to do what should have been done to begin with a short while later after 9 I find out that everyone is standing uip front except for the one girl and another associate because none of the rest of them are allowed to help her ring us up the only two people left in the store with about 700 more items to be rang in if that’s not enough since it was a holidy all of these employees are apparently being paid overtime to stand around and wait at a bit after 10 all but two girls leave and one girl is waiting to count cash while the other girl sits and keeps ringing stuff in we apologize profusely we expected two employees to ring us up like always and timed our visit to be out around 9 if this had happened instead of having one literally stand there and watch her for 1 hour and 47 minutes after close we would have all been out on time and no overtime or extra hours spent so finally at 10 47 pm our orders are done we thank the lovely girl lauren and jasmine who got stuck staying 2 hours past close because a manager made up some random policy and had to double down when I pointed out he really needed to follow that 750 rule when he was going to toss another girl on the register if this is policy fine it doesn’t seem to be no manager at your other outlets knew what he was talking about the orlando one insisted that the only restrictions are on cash payments and verified I was paying cash or credit it’s a pretty humiliating experience to get hassled trying to buy panties and bras by someone who’s on some type of power trip the only thing I said sideways to him was that I flat out didn’t believe his policy and that credit absolutely is not the same as cash I didnt call him any names scream at him or did anything to disrupt the store beyond what you see in the videos if this is not policy i’d like an apology from that manager in person or over the phone admitting he was mistaken I would hope that the next time I go there I am not hassled but if not I guess there’s always orlando or new jersey who seem to be quite friendly I also want to give recognition to jasmine and lauren lauren is the poor soul who got stuck ringing everything in alone because of the manager’s silly rule and not allowing anyone to help because it would be in violation of the 750 item rule jasmine was the cash counter who had to wait until we were out of the store to count cash even more interesting is that I had a former employee with me helping me buy and she said she never heard of this policy either but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t added since she left she was just as confused because the manager spent over 30 minutes trying to explain and defend this when that time certainly would have been more efficiently spent doing productive things instead of hassling someone who literally sits in a corner and speaks to no one while sorting through your products one bin at a time id love a call back about this or to find out what exactly is going on ive never been hassled like this before and it was a little frustrating and very trying to keep my cool joe A Declaration of Lost Independence

As we get older, as we live life, like stone eroding under the power of crashing waves, our bodies break down. And as our bodies break down, we become more and more unable to do things. Sometimes not to the standard we once did, and sometimes we lose the ability completely. We lose things that bring us joy, and we lose things that bring us to life. Whether it be slowly or quickly, we all lose our independence. Aging is something, like it or not, we have all signed up for. We will get older, our bodies will break down, and we will lose our overall independence. It’s not ideal, but we understand it to be true.

For Chronically ill people, however, we can lose our independence rather suddenly, and it has absolutely nothing to do with natural aging. If someone aged 78 years has trouble walking, getting dressed, or going to the bathroom, very few would question it. But imagine you are 28 years old and you have the same difficulties. Think of how you would feel. In this article I will discuss the ways in which people with chronic illness lose their independence in the areas of physical, mental, social, and dietary, and the toll it takes on us when the things that we should be able to do becomes out of reach.

Physical

Loss of physical independence is the area that most people think about when illness takes over. It is at least the most public. People see wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, and handicapped placards. They are also readily aware when someone takes a little longer to stand up, when they have trouble buttoning a shirt, or their handwriting becomes illegible. If someone gets to know a disabled person well enough they may also become aware of PIK lines, feeding tubes, and colostomy bags among others.

When someone is chronically ill/disabled their bodies are the primary victim of their disease. In one way or another, our bodies are malfunctioning. As my primary care physician said to me once, “We are all getting older, you're a just doing it a lot faster”. (If anyone is curious, I did not take offense, I appreciated that he acknowledged my illness and my lack of certain abilities)

Our independence is very much directly lost in these examples. We lose the ability of climb stairs, walk short distances, wash ourselves, cook food, and one I’d like to discuss a little more, exercise.

Doctors and online experts tell us we need to exercise. I can’t disagree with that. Exercise is important to keeping what we have left tip top. However, when we can’t climb stairs, walk short distances, or wash ourselves, how do you expect us to get the the gym to do some Cross Fit? I know for me, exercise of any kind hurts and has lasting effects. Some of my readers may remember how not long ago I walked a peppy poodle for half a mile and my legs hurt for three days after. This wasn't from being out of shape, this was due of my condition. Yes, exercise, but understand sometimes it's more harm than help.

I used to be a distance runner, a golfer, and could give the best piggy back rides. Now, due to Ankylosing Spondylitis, I can’t do any of that. And believe me when I tell you, that hurts me mentally as well.

Mental

With chronic illness and disability there comes a mental toll as well. Both in the areas of cognitive ability, and depression.

First, let's touch on cognitive ability which will then (as all of these sections do) we will move on to depression.

I imagine many of my readers are already well versed in the words and terminology used in the discussion of chronic illness. However, if you are new to this world, let me share a term that I, and all of us use probably on a daily basis: “Brain Fog”.

Brain Fog is exactly what it sounds like, a thick layer of fog on your brain. You know how hard it is to see through a covering of fog? Now, imagine that fog is in your head and your brain is trying to see thoughts, feelings, and ideas through it. It’s not easy and often things are lost.

Brain fog is caused by pain and the inability to actually shut down and rest. When people go to sleep their bodies and minds go into power saver mode to recharge, refresh, and do diagnostics checks. However, what happens when you drink caffeine, or you eat a big meal before bed? Well, if you can sleep, your body has now been given other things to work on. The caffeine makes your heart work harder, and your body needs to work to digest that big meal. So what happens? You don’t wake up rested because your body never actually got any rest. The same thing happens every night for people with chronic illness, but without the caffeine and steak dinner. In my case, with Ankylosing Spondylitis, my body is always working to fight off a foreign invader known as the lining between my joints. (I guess it’s actually a domestic invader) For most of us, because of constant pain, we can never get comfortable and even when we do sleep, we aren't actually resting. This lack of true sleep causes our brains to process at a diminished rate limiting our abilities to remember, problem solve, and function.

When I go to the doctor, I bring my wife. Not because I need a supportive hand, but because I need a partner and coach to help me tell the doctor what I need to say, and then remember what the doctor tells me. There have been times I have come home from an appointment solo and either forgot what treatment we discussed or, through my fogginess, made up something completely different because I could have sworn the doctor said she wanted to try bloodletting. (Or was it Methotrexate? I can’t remember) Although I love my wife, and I will always welcome her to join me at an appointment, I'm 37 years old, I shouldn't need someone to be my brain while the doctor checks out my body. While I am not depressed about this, this loss of mental and physical independence can also lead to depression.

I used to run, and I loved running. When my health got worse I took up walking long distance. However, only a few short years later, I couldn't even walk short distances without great pain and weakness. I was 34 the last time I walked with any kind of purpose. Far too young to lose so much ability. When I see people out running, or I drive past the local health club with overly large windows, I get sad longing for my glory days. When I watch American Ninja Warrior I’m sometimes heartbroken. Believe it or not, I used to be able to do stuff like that. It’s crushing to think that somebody actually has the freedom to wake up in the morning, pop up out of bed, and then think to themselves “Well, I think I will run 10 miles, shower, go to work, spend an hour at the gym, play with my kids, and then get 8 hours of restful sleep before doing it all over again.” Here I am thinking, “I hope I can get out of bed.”

Chronic illness can take a great toll on our mental state and subsequent independence.

Diet

With the chronic illness life, more often than not it seems, comes a list of dietary restrictions. 90% (not actual figures) of life comes from our gut. What we eat and drink. Other than breathing and IV treatments, it’s the only way anything gets into the factory known as our bodies. So, there is much stress put on us by our doctors, friends, family, TV, and the woman on the corner to eat right to better our condition. And not everyone is wrong. There are certain things that improve or worsen our condition. We will listen to the “experts” and try certain things. Excluding things like sugar, dairy, nightshades, and gluten. Or “fad diets” like Paleo, Keto, Vampire, or Atkins.* We might even try Kale! Many of us will try anything if it means we reduce our pain and get a little life back. But, the more foods we give up, the more independence we lose.

Personally this area has been my biggest struggle. Two years ago I went dairy free at the suggestion of a nutritionist, and one year ago I totally cut out sugar. And, I won’t lie, excluding both of those have been fantastic for me! I may not always notice the improvement, but if I happen to slip up on purpose of by accident, I certainly notice then. I am solid and confident in my sugar free/dairy free life, and for the most part I am happy.

However, this does not mean everything is butterflies and unicorns. I still struggle as I’m sure many many of my chronically ill brothers, sisters, and non-binary siblings do. Two examples: My birthday, and the ice cream aisle. On my birthday my co-workers wanted to know what to get me for my party. Typically the birthday treat is cupcakes and fudge. Hello sugar and milk! After much thought, I received the treat of peanuts and pickles. (And I didn't complain) However, it didn’t mean it didn't hurt. My co-workers needed to avoid yummy delicious treats because of my AS. They were supportive, but it didn’t mean I didn’t feel like a party pooper. As for the ice cream aisle, they have dairy free ice cream, and they have sugar free ice cream, but as a friendly store clerk told me, diary free & sugar free ice cream isn't ice cream. I'm out of luck there.

When it comes to dairy and sugar, I have lost my independence. People need to accommodate for me. Oftentimes meaning they might miss out on what they want. When my school does nacho day, frozen custard day, cookie day, etc for staff wellness days, I’m the only one not well. I could tell the people that sorry I can’t eat this, but that opens me up to feeling bad for making them feel bad.

Or when you need to find out if a restruant is accessible. Many would think that with all the handicapped parking spots all places would also be accessible. This is not always true. I have seen places where the "accessible" table is in a door way or up against a wall. The freedom to go to any restaurant one wants is never a guarantee.

When friends want to go out those of us with diet restrictions need to be “that guy/girl”. The one who has hard opinions on what we can eat. Ever stand behind the person at Starbucks who insists on soy milk and Stevia? Have you ever thought “Just take your coffee and drink it! You're holding up the line!” Yeah, that’s us, the ones holding up the line. Doesn't feel good.

We are jealous of those people who can eat whatever they want. Go to any restaurant, order anything off the menu, and even have dessert. This isn't about gaining weight, it's about being able to get out of bed in the morning.

Social

The next topic of how we lose our social independence ties into the three topics above and any others I have not mentioned. Humans are meant to be social. We aren't bears where we can just crawl into our cave and sleep for a few months. If any human crawled into a cave, nobody would be friends with them. Why? Because interacting is one of the standards of human life. We need other people! Sure, there are the mountain folk who go out, kill a deer, make clothing from it, light a fire and live their life in seclusion. (And there is nothing wrong with that) But, most humans need other people to cook our food, make our clothes, work on projects, drive us, and socialize purely for fun. The problem is, for many chronically ill people, getting out of the house and socializing sounds equal to climbing up and living in a mountain.

We are exhausted! Chronic illness takes a lot out of us! Every day can be a struggle to move, breathe, think, and complete other daily activities. Showering can be one of the most difficult activities for some. Doing laundry is pure hell! When most people hate it for the fact they have to do it, for me, folding makes me want to die! Seriously, I don't fully know why, but it hurts so much and takes so much out of me. After doing everything we have to do, we don’t have energy left for what we want to do.

I come home from work, my shoes come off, and I’m done! Very little is going to convince me to put my shoes back on and go out with friends when all I want to do is sleep. Because of this, many chronically ill people are forgotten. We bail on friends two or three times, and they just stop inviting us. But, then we have a good day, we are ready to accept an invite. Do we take it? No. Why? Because, we feel good now, we don’t know if we will feel good later.

Chronic illness symptoms can come in waves. We can have good days (or at least the start of a day) but then we drop. We don’t always know why we drop, but our feelings and mood are in no way guaranteed. So, we don’t risk it. It’s far better to be at home near our bed than 30 minutes away with a group of people you will need to apologize to for leaving early. Declining the invite or simple ghosting is far easier and less harmful to our psyche.

Chronically ill patients lose all sorts of independence. We can not truly live free with AS, Fibro, EDS, POTS, Lyme, MS, ME or one of the many other chronic illnesses that totally sap us of life. We are not free do do as we like.

While others wake up and get to choose between running, biking, partying, fixing cars, eating amazing food, and/or playing with their kids. We wake up and.. well.. that's it.

In closing. If you know a person with a disability/chronic illness try to be understanding of their limitations. Don’t give them a hard time when they can't do everything you want them to. Our lives are hard enough dealing with all the independence we may have lost.

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’ Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? (i) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

The parable Jesus tells in today’s gospel reading is the story of a man who sought to make his life secure by holding on to and enhancing what he owns. At the beginning of the story he is already a rich man; he has more than he needs. When he has an even bigger harvest than expected, his only problem is how to store this unexpected bonus. The answer he comes up with is to tear down his perfectly good barns and to build bigger ones. His preoccupation with storing his surplus blinds him to other more important considerations, such as, ‘What might God be asking me to do with my surplus?’ ‘How can I serve others with this surplus?’ He was looking for security in the wrong place. He thought that a greater abundance of possessions would make his life more secure. However, death came to him in the midst of his abundance; his life could not be secured in the way he thought. Jesus is saying to us that what makes our life really secure is making ourselves rich in the sight of God. We become rich in the sight of God by recognizing that all we have is ultimately a gift from God to be shared with others. God graces us so that we in turn can grace others. If we make ourselves rich in the sight of God by living generously out of the abundance that God has given us, then our lives will be truly secure with a security that endures beyond this earthly life into eternity.

(ii) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

We all place a high value on security, in its various forms. We like our lives to be financially secure; we like to feel that our job is secure, that our home is secure, that our health is secure, that we live we a secure society. Security is a very legitimate human need and requirement. In this part of the world we are likely to have more security that people who live in other parts of the world. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus speaks about security of life. He says that a person’s life is not made secure by what he owns. Possessions can only give us so much security and no more. The man in the parable we have just heard made the mistake of thinking that possessions would provide him with total security of life. Jesus declares in the gospel reading that it is the person who is rich in the sight of God who will be secure in the ultimate and true sense of that word. We are rich in the sight of God when we live our lives generously, when we give of ourselves, as Jesus did, rather than hoarding for ourselves, like the man in the parable. We pray that the same generous spirit that filled the life of Jesus would also fill our lives, so that we would know true and lasting security.

(iii) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

We all know that wills can be very contentious affairs. There has been many a family row over inheritance. In this morning’s gospel reading, such a family dispute is brought to Jesus’ attention. A man comes up to Jesus to ask him to intervene in a family dispute about inheritance. Jesus very wisely declines to get involved, and most of us would do the same in similar circumstances. However, Jesus takes the opportunity to give a teaching on what constitutes true riches or true security. We all like to feel financially secure. Jesus reminds us in that gospel reading, however, that we also need to be rich in the sight of God, because our ultimate security is to be found in God. Being rich in the sight of God means being generous with what God has given us, whether that be our earthly riches, our health, our time, our talents and gifts. The man in the parable is the ultimate hoarder; he hoarded everything for his own selfish purposes. For all his riches he ended up poor in the sight of God; for all his material security, his life was very insecure. This morning’s gospel reading calls on us to pay attention to where true security and lasting riches are to be found.

(iv) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Issues of inheritance can be very divisive in a family. Family members have been known to fall out over wills. In this morning’s gospel reading Jesus is portrayed as showing a great reluctance to get involved with a family dispute over inheritance. Instead, he takes the opportunity to give a teaching on the dangers of greed of any kind, and he illustrates his teaching with a parable. The main character in the parable comes across as rather insecure. He has had a wonderful harvest, but he is not happy. He immediately begins worrying about how he is going to store all his extra grain. He begins to be happy when he builds himself bigger barns to store all his extra grain and his goods. He begins to feel secure. However, having built all his barns he dies; he was storing all his goods for himself to secure his life, but it turned out to be a false security. Jesus’ comment on the parable suggests that we find our security not in storing up excessively for ourselves but in making ourselves rich in the sight of God, and we do that by emptying ourselves as Jesus did so that others might become rich. The message of the Scriptures is that God is our rock, our refuge, our security. If God is our security, then we are freed to give generously of what we have been given, after the example of Jesus.

(v) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Jesus had a great capacity for telling very short but memorable stories. Many of this stories or parables involve more than one character, but this morning’s parable has only one character in it. He fills the story; there is no room for anyone else in there. That feature of the story reflects the character of the person of the centre of it. This rich man was so absorbed by his possessions, so self-absorbed, that there was no room in his life for others, especially for those who could have benefited from his abundance. There was also no room in his life for God. All his plans are for himself; he speaks only in terms of ‘I’ and ‘my’. Jesus is painting a picture of where excessive greed can lead to. The desire to keep acquiring can leave us blind to other, more important, realities; it can impoverish our relationship with other people and with God. Jesus contrasts that way of life, with what he calls ‘making ourselves rich in the sight of God’. The person who was rich in the sight of God more than any other person was, of course, Jesus himself and that was because, in the words of Saint Paul, ‘he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant’. Elsewhere Paul said that Jesus became poor for our sake, so that we might become rich, rich in the sight of God. We look to Jesus to understand what it is to be rich in the sight of God. We call on the Holy Spirit to form in us what Paul calls ‘the mind of Christ’, so that like Jesus we learn to empty ourselves, to become poor, in the service of others, and, ultimately, in God’s service.

(vi) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

We have become more security conscious in recent times. We all want to feel secure in our homes especially when we hear of break-ins in the neighbourhood. At a deeper level we want to feel secure also. We want to secure our lives. We can sometimes look for security in possessions of one kind or another. In the gospel reading Jesus warns against seeking security in accumulating desirable objects. When someone comes up to Jesus asking him to intervene in an inheritance dispute, Jesus informs him that a person’s life is not made secure by what he owns. There can come a time in our lives when we realize this more clearly and we find a freedom to let go of what we have been hanging on to. We realize that possessing things is not meant to be an end in itself but rather what we possess is always for the good of others at the end of the day. This is a lesson that the rich man in the parable that Jesus spoke had not learned. He accumulated the goods of this world for the sake of accumulating. He stored them but they were serving no useful purpose. He made the mistake of thinking that accumulating and storing would make his life secure. However, when God suddenly called him out of this world, he stood before God a poor man. In spite of his many possessions, he was not rich in the eyes of God. Jesus calls us to be rich in the sight of God. This will often entail making ourselves poor for the sake of others, emptying ourselves in some way so that the lives of others are enriched. Jesus shows us the way. Saint Paul says of him, ‘though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich’.

And/Or

(vii) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Inheritance disputes can be very contentious. Families can fall out over such disputes. In this morning’s gospel reading an attempt is made to draw Jesus into a family dispute over inheritance. A man wants Jesus to take his side against his brother in the dispute. Very wisely, Jesus does not allow himself to get drawn into this dispute. Instead, he addresses the issue that is likely to be at the heart of the dispute, greed. Jesus recognizes that underneath the greed that seeks to accumulate can be a great insecurity. Some people accumulate more than they need and hang on to it because they want their lives to be secure. We all need to find some level of financial security. What Jesus warns about is thinking that genuine, enduring security is to be found in accumulating wealth or possessions. ‘A person’s life is not made secure by what he owns’, Jesus declares. This truth is illustrated by the parable of the rich man who put huge energy into accumulating, holding onto and storing large quantities of grain. His was a false security; when his life came to a sudden end, his real insecurity was revealed. He had built his house on sand. Jesus declares that genuine security comes from making ourselves rich in the sight of God. Jesus was the person who was supremely rich in the sight of God. Rather than accumulating, he emptied himself in the service of God and God’s people. Insofar as we can enter into that self-emptying love of the Lord, we too will be rich in God’s sight and our lives will be truly secure.

(viii) Monday, Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

In this morning’s gospel reading, Jesus tells a story of a man whose whole focus in life is to accumulate more and more. He is already rich at the beginning of the story. Nonetheless, it seems what he possessed wasn’t enough for him. After an exceptionally good harvest, he decides to go on a building spree. He knocks down perfectly good barns and builds bigger and better ones to store his extra grain and make his future even more secure than it already was. It is a story of someone who is thoroughly focused on himself; his speech is peppered with the words ‘I’ and ‘my’. In commenting on his own story, Jesus declares that even though this man looked very rich, at a more fundamental level he was very poor, because he was not rich in the sight of God. In immersing himself in his own possessions, he had lost sight of God completely. He never spoke to God; he was not aware of God. Yet, God was aware of him, and, at the end of the story, God spoke to him. God never loses touch with us, but we can lose touch with God. When that happens, our life is impoverished, even if we are well endowed with this world’s goods. In a sense, the gospel this morning calls on us to put first things first, to put God before all else. Being rich in the sight of God is more important than being rich in our own eyes or in the eyes of others. We are rich in the sight of God when we live our lives in the Spirit of God’s Son, who, more than any human being, was rich in the sight of God.

Tournament Report - A Noobs First 1st tournament

Hello my dear non-existent readers, I am Kunic and I literally just started playing Final Fantasy TCG not 8 days ago. Twirls mustache

Before I get on with everything that’s happened in this slightly-elongated past week, let’s get to my backstory!

...

Okay, okay, I won’t go into too many details; only the relevant stuff will be covered. In short, this is the first physical TCG I’ve played in over 11 years. The last TCG I played was Yu-Gi-Oh!, which I played for about 5 years from 2002-2007. I wasn’t anything huge in the scene, but I did stand out a bit (not to stroke my own ego or anything).

The area I lived in was the heart of where some of the Metagame.com writers lived (remember that awesome site?), and, taking inspiration, I began to write for TCGPlayer.com. Coinciding with this, I also moderated their Yu-Gi-Oh! forum. Therefore, to say I was heavily ingrained in a subsection of the NA Yu-Gi-Oh! scene would be an understatement. However, as life went on, I had to make some choices that drove me away from the game.

As a last hurrah, after 7 months of not playing the game, I entered into a 2007 Shonen Jump Championship that happened in my city, where I took 23rd out of close to 230 entrants, with my only 2 losses happening to top-8 finalists. This is my highest Yu-Gi-Oh! accomplishment, and I’d say that it’s a damned fine way of ending things, wouldn’t you?

Anyhow, backstory complete, let’s move on!

So after a long hiatus, I was itching to get back into a card game. Yu-Gi-Oh! has changed way to much, and not for my liking, so that was out of the question. Ultimately my friend messaged me on Discord about how he’s wanting to try out Final Fantasy TCG. So I read the rules 8 days ago, and off to the races we went!

My local card shop hosts tournaments every other weekend, so I had just a week to prepare for my first event, and then I’d need to wait 2 weeks for the next. I decided that I wanted to build a cheap deck with locally sourced cards first, and then I’d splurge on the harder-to-find cards online during the 2 weeks of downtime I’ll have. To achieve this, I purchased a few Opus IV boosters, as well as all 3 Opus V starters (my local card shop was running a weekly special, putting them all at $8.99). This helped to pad out my core cards (Evoker’s and such).

During my research, I discovered the lovely midgar.blog, where I took immense inspiration for a mono wind deck. I pieced together a near carbon copy, sans a few of the harder to get cards (lookin’ at you, Izana), and with just $17 spent, I was ready for the event.

My first FFTCG Tournament

We had a turn-out of 9 total people. Well, it was 8, and then 9. You see, standings were posted, my opponent and I sat down to play, and then... Nevermind, we have a 9th person, new standings will be posted! So round 1 ended up being a BYE for me. I was a little disheartened by this, but by now a few players knew I was brand-spankin’ new to the game, so they let me hover over and watch their games to learn.

One of the players I was watching wrapped up his game in about 10 minutes, and wanted to have a match with me to teach me. Thanks dude with the rainbow watchband (I’m horrible with names)! He was going to use his tournament deck, which was a Chocobo’s deck, but then I mentioned it’d be a near mirror match-up, so he swapped it out for a mono-lightning deck (I think). I ended up winning this (yay!), but I knew it was because he didn’t get the removal he needed.

Standings for round 2 were posted and I was up against a Scion’s deck! Specifically it was Earth/Lighting. Thing’s started out nicely for me, but then they turned sour real fast. You see, this deck has 1 major weakness, and that’s removal. It doesn’t matter the type of removal, the opponent just needs it and I can’t come back. Well, he had Al-Cid. The good Al-Cid. Yeah I was dead by turn 3. I scored two points of damage out of spite and conceded as I just couldn’t come back from that.

But hey, at least some hot Yuffie-on-Yuffie action happened this game. That’s always a plus, right?

The third round was a bit more interesting as I was up against Mono Ice. You know, discards and crap. Pretty fast he had 2 Gesper’s and 2 Thaumaturge. Yeah that was brutal. But you know what he didn’t have? Removal. Considering virtually every card in my deck is a 1 or 2, I just resorted to dumping my hand every turn. Yeah that buffed Thaumaturge, but he couldn’t risk attacking with them due to the size of my board. So I just bide my time with Black Chocobo and waited until I drew Shemhazai, the Whisperer. Boom, victory over the ice threat!

The fourth and final round before the semi and grand-finals. I was placed in top 4 at the time and, as a result of how my local store does things, was given an non-foil Promo Exdeath. Neat!

Alright, so I was originally going to by up against rainbow wristband guy again, but the system accidentally gave someone a BYE two times in a row, so they had to redo the listings. Rainbow wristband guy begrudgingly got it, sorry dude.

Anyhow, my final opponent... I can’t really recall his deck. He really only played 3 cards against me:

Zodiark, Keeper of Precepts

The Zodiark was both a huge issue, and why I ultimately won this game. You see, due to these big plays (all happening within the first 3-4 turns), he didn’t have much else in terms of board presence. He had a 2 drop that blocked me early early on, but I was able to deal with it. Afterwards I could easily direct attack past the Kam’lanaut... until he dropped the Zodiark. This wiped out 4 of my forwards, which immediately brought him down to just 2 life, but I lacked a board, and only had 1 card in hand. Thankfully that card was my faithful Black Chocobo, and I drew into 2 more forwards, including Yuffie. This lead to a secured victory on my next turn.

Boy this is getting long. But I got top 4!

At this point it was time for semi-finals. Now, my shop does something cool here. First place gets 8 boosters and 2 promo cards, second gets 6 boosts and 1 promo card, and 3rd/4th gets 3 boosters. However, instead of playing, we could split all the boosters evenly (5-each), and the top 2 seeded players get their respective promo card prizes. We opted for the latter. So a $5 entry got my a Promo Exdeath, and 5 boosters of my choice (per the suggestions of everyone around me, I went with Opus VI).

And that’s it for the tournament! I got 3rd place, which is about 6 places higher than I expected to be. Pretty proud of that.’

Post tournament shenanigans

At this point, my friend had showed up and mentioned how the shop still had 3 of the Opus VI Pre Release Kits on hand for $35 each... Yeah I was gonna get me one of those!

I didn’t get too much from all the boosters, mostly just a few foil Hero and Rare cards, but man it was all worth it for that sexy foil Guy and the Gullwing card back.

Yeah, this was a ton of fun. For having not played a physical TCG in over a decade, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Does anyone still have trouble...

...with the fact that, these days on most standard computers, you can put spaces in filenames?

...with the fact that you can put more than 8 letters/numbers in a filename?

...with the fact that most of the time, typing the file extension while naming a file is not necessary unless you’ve specifically set things up that way or it’s one of those “filetype determined by extension” saves in specific programs like GIMP?

Because I have trouble with all of these. I am getting better (I just named an entire series of files “Igor head snuggle 01″ etc. without trying to type .jpg at the end, without eliminating the spaces or replacing them with dashes or underscores, and without saving it as IGRHSN01.JPG or IGORHD01.JPG or IGORHEAD.JPG or something.) But it feels wrong, and I’m still ridiculously efficient at figuring out how to condense things down to 8 letters or fewer.

And don’t get me started on what directories got called on a GUI. (Our first major computer was an Amiga 1000 so I still have a weird tendency to think of them as “drawers”, something that never really took off the way “folders” did.) Or the fact that GUIs are the norm, and that there are avid computer users who have never seen or heard of a command line in their life. And watch-sized computers (calculator watches -- with individual buttons -- were the nerd equivalent when I was a kid).

Or the fact that our first-ever computer stored files on tapes (like the same kind of tape you taped music on, which also doesn’t happen much these days it seems, although at least people still know tapes exist). Or when floppy disks were usually floppy (and when they were seemingly rigid, they were just keeping the floppy bits inside and invisible), and most computers didn’t have hard drives. Or modems. And USB wasn’t a thing so every type of computer had a different configuration of pins for peripherals to plug in(1). Or when all web pages were written by hand in text editors.

Or just... argh. I feel like my brain can’t keep up with technology anymore, even cars freak me out.(3) Especially the new kind that don’t have keys. I mean on the one hand it’s cool living in The Future, but in other ways my brain just can’t keep up with what technology exists let alone how to use or even coexist with some of it. And seriously 37 (or really 36 I think, it’s 37 in August, I’m also losing count of birthdays these days so I go by year -- when I can remember the year -- and then get confused) isn’t that old.

(1) Which was obnoxious enough that my dad designed something akin to USB -- but never went to the trouble of marketing or patenting it. Which makes me imagine that tons of people were inventing similar things at the same time.

If that confuses you, see multiple discovery/simultaneous invention. a.k.a. also the same thing (that people’s ignorance of pisses me off about) when people start fighting over who “really” coined a word or phrase when I can vividly remember multiple simultaneous (or non-simultaneous but without having ever heard of each other) coinings. When a concept or invention is necessary and two or more people have very similar situations, background knowledge, etc., then two or more people are very likely to come up with the exact same word, invention, etc., without having known each other.

Famous example: The word autism, originally coined by Bleuler to describe a symptom for his also-newly-coined diagnostic term schizophrenia, was picked up and changed in meaning almost exactly simultaneously by Kanner and Asperger to describe two almost completely overlapping(2) groups of kids they were working with. They had roughly the same background, the same training, and the same social and cultural circumstances that made certain people stand out who hadn’t stood out that often before, so they slapped the same name on us while (for many reasons) emphasizing slightly different aspects of who we were.

(2) No, really, there are a lot of myths about both groups of kids that cause people to assume they were wildly different. They weren’t. Kanner’s patients were usually far more capable (speech, college, etc.) than people who’ve never read him assume they were, and Asperger’s patients were sometimes (including speech delays) less capable than people who have and haven’t read him assume (he emphasized and sometimes distorted their capabilities and downplayed their difficulties to save them from Nazi eugenics). There are people in Asperger’s original writings who would meet DSM-IV and previous criteria for ‘autistic disorder’ or ‘PDDNOS’, and there are people in Kanner’s original writings who would meet (or be falsely assumed to meet and therefore get diagnosed with, which often amounts to the same thing given how all professionals starting with Kanner and Asperger see traits that aren’t there and miss ones that are) DSM-IV and previous criteria for ‘Asperger disorder’ or ‘PDDNOS’. The two original doctors also both focused on different aspects of similar people, so if you sent the same kid to both people he’d be described totally differently. Mind you I don’t even consider autism to be a thing the way most people do. But even though I consider it to actually be a bunch of people who don’t always have significant things in common, I don’t consider the differences to have anything whatsoever to do with Kanner vs. Asperger, that’s barking up the wrong tree entirely even for people who believe fervently in these ways of categorizing people.

(3) Including, when delirious a few years ago, part of what gave me a delusion that it was about 30 years in the future, was the car they used to drive me home from the hospital that had some kind of computer screen embedded in the dashboard (with GPS, various monitors, air conditioning controls, etc.) and other ridiculously high-tech crap. A lot of which makes me nervous. Hell, power windows still make me nervous -- the idea of needing power in your car in order to open the window, with no manual override, strikes me as incredibly unsafe. And manual overrides aren’t hard to put in. My dad and I designed about three entirely separate ways to do it within five minutes of conversation. And that’s conversation slowed down by the fact that I type to communicate.

The USA Pans are so fantastic, I recommend them for any kitchen and any cooking style. They are 100% completely non-stick, super heavy-duty, and cook very evenly. Plus, they are made in the USA!

I have the 8" loaf pans, the mini loaf pans, the XL sheet pans, and cookie sheets -- and I'm always looking to grow my collection as I use them all on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis.

Wet Brush Hair Brush

Many years ago, after mentioning Nora's extreme sensitivity to having her hair brushed, many of you recommended the Wet Brush... I am forever grateful!

Literally, the very first time I used the brush on Noras hair, she was a completely different person. She didnt whine, complain, and cry ouch the ENTIRE time I brushed. Instead, she just sat there and even made the comment this brush doesnt hurt my head!

We now have 3 Wet Brushes (one in each bathroom) and 2 Mini Wet Brushes for traveling.

They are, hands-down, the best hair brush I've tried -- perfect for children and adults, straight or curly hair, thin or thick hair, wet or dry hair.

Velvet "Huggable Hangers"

Our family uses velvet hangers exclusively for all our closets (we use heavy-duty plastic hangers in the mudroom).

I have adult size hangers for our closet, kid size hangers for the older 3, and I even found baby size hangers for the nursery.

They are so slim and they really "hold on to" the clothing so well.

We have had a handful break over the years -- but that's a byproduct of 4 children who like to pick their own clothing out!

I've always recommended velvet hangers for all my organizing clients, and I will continue to use them in my own home.

The 5 Love Languages Book

I first read The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman when I was in college, after Dave and I got engaged. He read it too, and we quickly realized we have very opposite love languages!

Since then, I've reread this book many times.

I think both Dave and my love languages have morphed and changed a bit (Im totally acts of service now, and I used to be more gifts) but I cant tell you how valuable it has been for us to not only learn the other persons love language, but also realize that we both have very different love languages.

I think it saved us lots of frustration in the early years of our marriage and even still today.

I highly recommend this book to all dating, engaged, and married couples, as well as any of the other books in the growing "5 Love Languages" collection.

Gecko-Loc Shower Hooks

Originally shared in July of 2017.

Several years ago, I replaced all our suction shower hooks with Gecko-Lock Super Suction Stainless Steel Double Hook, and we LOVE them!

They are so easy to install and VERY strong. Plus, the stainless steel looks so much nicer with our Chrome shower fixtures than the plastic hooks I previously used.

We've never had any issues with them losing suction or falling down and if/when I want to move them, I just unscrew the knob and the hook immediately comes off the shower wall with no pulling or tugging on my part.

got 2b Hair Products

Dave and I both use the got 2b hair products every day (for years and years)... and we have no intentions of switching to anything different.

Topseat Child's Toilet Seat

I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to potty training. However, I have found some really great tools to help simplify the process a bit!

The Topseat toilet seat has been a life-saver for our busy bathrooms these past several years. It's such a simple, convenient way to always have a child's toilet seat available when needed -- and out of the way when not needed.

It's much cleaner than removable potty seats, and it looks a lot nicer in our bathrooms too!

Vera Bradley Crossbody Wristlet

I've used a Vera Bradley Wristlet as my main "purse" for probably close to 10 years now, and although I'm not one to be brand loyal, I REALLY love these wristlets (and I researched several other brands).

They can be pricey, but considering I'm only on my 2nd one in 10 years, they are worth it for me.

I love that my phone fits inside (along with everything else I need to carry around) and that there's a clip for my keys. Plus, I can wear it as a wristlet OR a cross-body bag depending on which strap I use.

It looks like my polka-dot fabric isn't available on Amazon right now, but there are TONS of other really fun (or simple) fabrics to choose from.

Presto Electric Griddle

I use our electric griddle almost daily... and this one is HUGE! I can easily make 12 pancakes or 9 grilled cheese sandwiches at one time!

I love that this specific griddle is a square (not a longer rectangle) so it fits in my kitchen cabinets better.

I've taken this griddle on many family vacations, and even thought about trying to smuggle it in my suitcase when we fly! It's probably my most-used small appliance.

Big and Easy Colouring Books

Nutrimill Artiste Mixer

The Nutrimill is the one and only mixer I use for everything from homemade whipped cream and butter to whole grain bread dough -- and anything in between.

Its so powerful and has a huge mixing capacity, but its much more compact and lighter-weight than KitchenAid Mixers so its easier to store and lift and carry around my kitchen.

NOTE: Here's my recipe for 100% whole grain bread dough, and my recipe for monster cookies (a HUGE batch that I've never been able to mix in anything other than my Nutrimill!)

Britax B-Agile Single Stroller

After almost a decade of pushing babies and toddlers around in various strollers, bike trailers, etc. my most favorite single stroller is the Britax B-Agile.

This is the stroller I use most often for the last 2-3 years as it's very light-weight and SO easy to push around.

The wheels glide everywhere and turn on a dime. Its technically considered a jogging stroller, but you know I dont jog! I just really do like having 1 wheel in the front as its easier to push.

We are nearing the end of our need for strollers -- but I have a feeling I'll keep this one around for a few years in case we have baby visitors who need to be pushed around.

Preen Weed Preventer

Originally shared in July of 2016.

If I could onlypick one product to use in my garden all year long, Preen would be it.

Year after year, Preen continues to save me hours upon hours of pulling weeds because it STOPS the weed seeds from germinating, which means there arent many weeds to pull!

I apply Preen to all my planting beds 4 times every season:

1. Mid-March, right after the weather starts to warm up.

2. Early May, after we spread mulch

3. Mid to late July

4. Late October, to hopefully prevent weed growth in early spring.

In May and July, I use the Preen + Fertilizer, and then I use the regular Preen in October. The added Fertilizer is great for perennials, annuals, shrubs and trees, and even in vegetable gardens.

The only caution is that you do NOT want to spread Preen in your veggie garden until all the seeds have germinated as Preen PREVENTS seeds from germinating.

NOTE: Here are a few more of my favorite weed-fighting tools (pictured above). And here's a post about our sort-of crazy way to prevent weeds in our vegetable garden (since we don't always use Preen around our veggies).

MAM Baby Products

I first got hooked onall the amazing MAM productsway back when I FINALLY got my almost-2 year old, Nora, to drink water from a MAM sippy cup. She previously refused all sippy cups, bottles, water bottles, etc. so it was a BIG deal!

Since then, we've used the MAM brand of bottles, pacifiers, teathers, and sippy cups exclusively for our babies and toddlers.

I also still use the MAM bottle cleaning brush to clean all our water bottles and other long, skinny kitchen items. That thing is the best!

We give MAM goodies to all our friends and family members who have new babies!

OLUKAI Footwear

As many of you know, I buy the vast majority of all our family's clothing from local thrift stores for pennies on the dollar.

And I rarely ever spend anywhere close to "full price" on anything.

However, one thing I'm willing to pay a bit more for is good quality footwear (especially since I've had lower back problems for the majority of my adult life).

The OLUKAI line of women's footwear is one of my favorites -- I live in their flip flops in the summer and their slippers in the winter (slippers pictured above).

Their shoes are SO supportive, so comfortable, and actually pretty stylish too! I've had mine for years and they still look brand new!

BABYBJRN Bouncer

This bouncy seat is one of my most-used baby items EVER! I used it daily for all 4 babies -- and honestly, Clara still uses it now (at 27 months).

It is THE BEST bouncy seat around... the only downside is the price tag.

Thankfully, I was able to find my Baby Bjorn used on Craigslist before Nora was born... and it has served us well for over 8 years now. This bouncer is one of the very few baby things I plan to keep for whenever babies visit our house (and if I'm willing to hang onto something we don't necessarily NEED, you know I really really love it!)

I love that the fabric easily comes off to wash, and that it folds completely flat for storage. I love that it doesn't require batteries or installation or assembly. And of course, the fact that even small infants can easily bounce themselves in this chair is just the icing on the cake!

Start looking for a used one, or splurge on this amazing bouncer for yourself (or a new parent in your life). You will not regret it!

If youve ever been frustrated with plastic wrap that doesnt stick or sticks too much you definitely need to make the switch to thePress'n Seal wrap.

I use this every day in many different ways obviously to cover food dishes and plates, but also to line my paint trays, wrap paint brushes, and many other random things all over our house.

This wrap sticks amazingly well with just a little bit of firm pressure and (at least in my experience) it can be used over and over again without getting ruined or getting jumbled up into a sticky balled mess (can you tell I absolutely hate traditional plastic wrap?)

I love that there are so many customizable features and the fact that it always seems to function perfectly for my schedule, my family, and my life.

I am not a professional chef, nor do I aspire to be one but having GOOD knives to use in my kitchen has made a huge difference for me over the years.

Ive slowly switched almost all my knives (and kitchen scissors) over to the Wsthof brand, and I can honestly say Ive never once been disappointed. They are super sharp, they feel amazing in my hand, and they cut, slice, and chop better than any other knife Ive used.

POT stock ticker generates frenzy as WHO softens stance on marijuana

Little illustrates the mania for cannabis investments better than the unprecedented demand over the stock symbol POT, but new recommendations from the World Health Organization suggest some of that frenzy may not be unwarranted.

Tiny Vancouver-based cannabis company Weekend Unlimited Inc. saw its stock gain as much as 148 per cent Friday after winning out over 40 other companies in the first-ever lottery for a stock ticker held by Canadian exchanges. Weekend Unlimited, which previously traded under YOLO, short for “you only live once,” wasn’t exactly lacking a memorable ticker.

In a weird twist, the YOLO symbol may find new life in another pot-related security, as the AdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF has filed to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under YOLO.

In more serious news, the WHO is recommending that cannabis and its resin be removed from Schedule IV, the most restrictive category of a 1961 drug convention that governs international treaties. The WHO is also moving to clarify that CBD containing less than 0.2 per cent THC is not under international control at all.

If adopted, these recommendations would recognize changing attitudes toward the drug and its medical properties, potentially encouraging fence-sitting politicians to speed up the pace of legalization. They could also be a “catalyst for Big Pharma to further assess the global medical cannabis opportunity,” according to BMO analyst Tamy Chen.

Advertising Challenges

“The treaty’s recommended cannabis rescheduling provides countries additional political cover to reexamine their current state on cannabis, given it serves as the regulatory framework for many,” writes Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kenneth Shea.

The proposals will now go to the United Nations’ Commission on Narcotic Drugs, whose 53 member nations will have the chance to vote on them, likely in March.

POT hype and WHO recommendations aren’t making it any easier to advertise cannabis brands, at least not yet. Earlier, this month, CBS declined to air a commercial touting the benefits of medical marijuana during the Super Bowl and Facebook has booted some pot sellers off Instagram, Bloomberg’s Craig Giammona reported last week.

The restrictions are even tighter in Canada, where nearly all forms of marketing and branding are prohibited. Our pot containers here are dominated by a big red stop sign-shaped symbol that says “THC” and a yellow warning label that dwarfs the logo, much like cigarette packages. This makes it difficult to spread brand awareness except through word-of-mouth, companies argue, and may be one of the reasons behind the slow ramp-up in legal sales.

Canadian Supply

The Canadian government reported that total cannabis sales in December were up 4 per cent from the month before, a muted gain given that November sales marked a 42 per cent decline in per-day recreational pot sales from October, when legalization took effect.

The fact that total inventory continues to grow, hitting nearly two months’ worth of dried pot and five months’ of cannabis oil at the end of December, indicates that Canada’s ongoing supply shortage is more a function of supply-chain problems than a lack of product, according to Eight Capital analyst Graeme Kreindler.

“The process of getting products from vault to shelf remains a key step in alleviating supply issues in the Canadian market,” Kreindler said.

Edibles Question

The ongoing shortages, whatever their root cause, have raised concerns among some in the industry that it won’t be ready to meet demand for edibles and concentrates, which were expected to join dried flower and oils on store shelves by October of this year. However, Justin Trudeau’s pot czar told Bloomberg’s Josh Wingrove last week that sales may lag regulations, citing the 17-week gap between the federal pot law passing last June and the formal market opening in October.

According to Keith Merker, CEO of WeedMD Inc., “It’s classic cannabis industry stuff; you’re operating in this mist of uncertainty and trying to make business decisions that are appropriate.”

The lack of clarity isn’t deterring big U.S. funds from sniffing around the industry. Funds with US$100 billion or more in assets under management are exploring lending to Canadian cannabis companies as a way to gain expertise in the burgeoning market ahead of potential legalization, my colleague Paula Sambo and I reported last week.

The idea is to provide first-lien loans, which are first to be repaid when a company fails, to mid-tier pot firms, according to Cormark Securities Inc.’s Alfred Avanessy. This would open up a whole new world of financing to the industry, which has largely relied on equity raises and convertible debt to date.
