Stellan Skarsgard to Receive Locarno’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Skarsgard will attend the Swiss festival to accept the Leopard Club Award and present 'What Remains,' a film in which he co-stars with his son, Gustaf.

Legendary Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard (Good Will Hunting, Mamma Mia!, Nymphomaniac) will be honored with the Leopard Club Award, a lifetime achievement honor, at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival.

Skarsgard will receive the prize on Aug. 4 at a ceremony at Locarno’s Piazza Grande and will take part in an audience Q&A on Aug. 5. In his honor, Locarno will screen Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg (1990), Kjell Grede’s period drama in which Skarsgard plays Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews during the final months of World War II. The festival will also screen What Remains, Ran Huang’s crime drama, co-written by his partner Megan Everett-Skarsgard, which features Skarsgard and one of his actor sons, Gustaf (Vikings, Oppenheimer). Huang and the Skarsgards will attend the Locarno screenings.

The 72-year-old has successfully balanced a career as a European art house star. He has made five films with Lars von Trier — including Breaking the Waves (1996), Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003) and Melancholia (2011) — and five with Norwegian auteur Hans Petter Moland, such as In Order of Disappearance (2014) and Out Stealing Horses (2019). Skarsgard has also held supporting roles in Hollywood blockbusters, like Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia!, Thor and the Avengers movies. He played Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, a role he will reprise in the upcoming Dune: Part Two. On the small screen, Skarsgard won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a miniseries in 2019 for his performance in HBO drama Chernobyl and recently starred in Tony Gilroy’s Star Wars spinoff Andor for Disney+.

“Stellan Skarsgard belongs to the tradition of European actors who have distinguished themselves between auteur cinema and Hollywood,” said Locarno artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro. “Endowed with a very powerful stage charisma, he has been able to make every role he has played unforgettable. Capable of reinventing his character according to the needs of the director and the script, he was able to inject his personality into films that were extremely different from each other.”

Locarno’s Leopard Club award is presented every year to an individual “whose work in the film industry has left its mark on the collective imagination.” Previous winners include Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, Adrien Brody, Meg Ryan, Hilary Swank and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Steven Spielberg Wins Best Director of a Motion Picture | 2023 Golden Globes

What I found really smart about this speech was the way he told the story of his film. It made me realize how he and many other filmmakers were still cognizant that the win is a great marketing opportunity. This show (along with the Oscars) is the best place to re-sell your film to the millions of people who love entertainment enough to watch this televised show.

The Fabelmans is the largest box office flop of Steven's career. But in this speech, he really gives the movie intrigue. Now people like me, who were mildly interested in this film, and people who had no idea this film even existed, are interested in the revealing aspects of the movie. I want to know what DRAMA Steven couldn't bring himself to share in a film until he was 72!! I wanna know the magic of his life. I didn't before, but now I do!

And Guillermo Del Toro did the same thing by even ending his speech with how people should watch the film even though it's not made for kids, though you can watch it with them if you can explain some things lol. It's a very smart move since people are already inclined to watch the winning films, but the speeches are critical to the sell too.

Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.

This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne

Anyways here's the list in primary chronological order:

Batman: Year One (Batman Vol 1 #404-#407)

This story line established the back story for Batman in the post-crisis timeline, along with the back stories for Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle. Not necessarily canon anymore, but a good story to get the feel of the characters

Batman: The Man Who Laughs

This is a one shot that was published in 2005 that tells the story of Batman's first encounter with the Joker roughly a year after the Batman's debut in Gotham. Based on the Joker's original first appearance in Batman Vol 1 #1.

Batman and the Monster Men

This is a 6 part mini series that takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. First half of the Dark Moon Rising series. Story revolves around Batman's first dealing with Hugo Strange

Batman and the Mad Monk

This is another 6 part mini series that is the second half of the Dark Moon Rising series. It is a retelling of a story from Detective Comics Vol 1 #31-32

Batman: The Long Halloween

This is a 13 part limited series, that serves as a re-introduction of the Calendar Man and features a wide array of Batman's rouge gallery such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, and Poison Ivy.

Batman: Dark Victory

This is a 14 part limited series that is a sequel to The Long Halloween. The main case in the story is a turf war between Two-Face and the Falcon Mafia. It also serves as a re-telling of Dick Grayson's Robin origin.

This is a collection of 3 Batman one shots: Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon. All stories center around Ra's al Ghul and Talia al Ghul.

Batman: Strange Apparitions (Detective Comics Vol 1 #469-479)

This collection reintroduces Golden Age villains such as Hugo Strange and Dead shot along with introducing new villains such as Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface III.

Batman: The Killing Joke

A 60 page one shot that hints at the Jokers true identity, along with pushing the Jokers madness to new extremes, and showing just how dangerous he can be.

Batman: the Cult

This is a 4 issue mini series, in which Batman gets captured, torture and brain washed by Deacon Blackfire. This is also one of the few stories written by Jim Starlin that shows Jason Todd in a favorable light, as Starlin had a dislike for the character and kid sidekicks.

Batman: Death in the Family (Batman Vol 1 #426-429)

The famous 4 issue story arc that allowed readers to vote on the fate of the then current Robin, Jason Todd.

Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman Vol 1 #440-442)

This story is the introduction of Tim Drake and his taking of the Robin Mantle. The story also involves a case with Two-Face

This story shows us the inner workings of Arkham Asylum, along with introducing new villains such as Zsasz, Jeremiah Arkham, and Amygdala

72 Hits Of The ‘50s Commercial with Jeff Conaway (1978)

I stumbled across this commercial on YouTube, so I hope you all enjoy this one. As the title mentions, this has Golden Globe Nominee Jeff Conaway (Taxi, Grease) and an actress named Elaine Petricoff.

Frozen and Frozen 2: a difference between awards and score

We all know that Frozen 2 outdid Frozen 1 with 200,000 millions of takings of difference.

And that Frozen 2 didn’t receive any nomination for the Oscar besides the “Best original song” for the hardly memorable Into The Unknown, whilst Frozen 1 received 2 Oscar nominations and it won both of them. But what about other awards? I made a little resarch not so long ago. According to IMDB:

As you can see, there’s not only a huge difference of winnings, but for nominations as well. Basically, we have:

Frozen: a total of 140 nominations. 81 winnings and 59 other nominations

Frozen 2: a total of 87 nominations. 15 winnings and 72 other nominations

But let’s dig up a little more. The other most considerable awards just after the Oscars are the Golden Globes and the Baftas. Let’s take a look (I wanted to post pics as well, but Tumblr is literally a mess and didn’t share my pics)

Frozen:

1 Golden Globe winning for best animated feature, for a total of 2 Golden Globes nominations.

2 Baftas winnings (one for best animated feature) for a total of 3 Baftas nominations.

Frozen 2:

0 winnings for 2 Golden Globes nominations

0 winnings for 1 Bafta nomination

Also, there’s the Annies, the “Oscars of animation”. We have:

5 Annie winnings for 10 nominations (there’s also best animated feature)

Frozen 2:

2 Annie winnings for 8 nominations (but none of them is best animated feature)

Frozen 1 and Frozen 2 are literally on another level talking about nominations and winnings. Why so little interest? Did they know the sequel wasn’t comparable to the first one?

Also, there’s the reviews. According to IMDB, Frozen 1 has a 7,4/10 on 556.334 ratings and 75 on Metascore. Frozen 2 has a 6,9/10 on 112.763 ratings and 64 on Metascore. People have chosen: the first one was the most loved and beloved.

Basically we can say that even if the sequel had more takings, it’s all thanks to the first Frozen. If Frozen 2 was born as a stand-alone, I’d be sure it wouldn’t have made all that money. There’s so little interest compared to the original one: even the songs on Youtube have basically little views, comparing to the 2 billions views of Let It Go. Views don’t lie.

So, what about now? Jen, Chris... are you really sure taking Elsa in the forest with stranger people was a good idea?

 Three Women designers and their influence on contemporary typographic design

Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designers of recent and has worked for the design firm Pentagram since 1991. Her designs can notably be seen in the Public Theatre logo and its promotional material. Her poster for “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in da Funk” was groundbreaking, it helped to shift the perception of the Public Theatre and its shows. She used typographic design to express the feeling of the show by displacing text that fills the entirety of the poster. It strikes the feeling of rhythm within a tap dance and is filled with life, just like New York. This design really put Paula Scher on the map and was such an influential design that Paula herself admits (to her dismay) that everyone began to imitate the design.

When speaking about her work for MoMA, she touches on the difficulty they faced in creating consistent designs for their promotional material. Scher managed to align this to the lack of communication between departments at the company and suggested a structural overhaul for creating more consistency within the brand. The outcome was an adaptable design template that could be used across a variety of marketing materials along with a new Art director at the helm. An innovative and game changing direction for MoMA that really speaks of Scher’s brilliance.

Scher has also worked on larger scales creating environmental graphics for interior and exterior buildings. The aim of these was not only to be a purposeful design for navigation but also to create a sense of a place. This idea reminds me of Otl Aicher’s stick figure designs for the Olympics’72 where the iconic bathroom figures originated in order to create an inclusive signage system for multitudes of languages.

Scher played an integral part in bringing about The New York High Line Logo and its fruition as an attraction. The logo itself was a simple letter ‘H’ derived from a font used in British railroads and was altered to resemble the look of  track lines. Scher says the design was easy and she was originally surprised the project became a reality due to its huge fundraising goals.

I recently watched Scher’s episode on Netflix’s Abstract. It was incredibly insightful to listen to her speak about her design process and the importance of the use of language in conveying your message about a design.

"Designing the logo isn't the hard job, it's persuading a million people to use it"  (Netflix 2020)

Scher says her most brilliant ideas come to her in the back of NY taxicabs, the process is “allowing my subconscious to take over so I can free associate. You have to be in a state of play to design, if you aren’t in a state of play you can’t make anything.” (Netflix, 2020)

Gail Anderson is a New York based Graphic Designer who was mentored by none other than the iconic Paula Scher. Anderson’s work spans from its beginnings in the late 80’s working at the Boston Globe, to working for Rolling Stone Magazine where she helped define its definitive style during its peak years. A job that offered less money but she felt was an opportunity of a lifetime has reminded her throughout the years to keep on challenging herself even if a job sounds a bit scary or unknown.

“-had I not done that (taken the Rolling Stones job) - I would have been kicking myself because it was this golden moment at the magazine that I got to be part of.”  (AEF, 2019)

After 14 years Gail moved on to work with SpotCo. creating iconic promotional posters for very well known Broadway and Theatre productions where the focus was on creating designs that help give an overall sense of a show.

“we are trying to provide an emotional promise - you’re not framing a scene or a moment”  (American Theatre Wing, 2013)

Her most current endeavours are with her own design studio, Anderson Newton Design (AND) and as a faculty member at her old stomping ground of the School of Visual Arts. Throughout her years in the design industry she has created a variety of design based books with co-author Steven Heller all about illustration, design and typography and was the first woman of colour to achieve the American National Design Award of Lifetime Achievement from the Smithsonian Design Museum in 2018.With over 30 years of design work under her belt, there is no doubt in saying that Anderson has had a great influence on contemporary typographic design. A self confessed design book hoarder, Gail has been scrapbooking her own magazines from a young age and found her calling through her curiosity of illustration and type design within these publications. Gail preaches the importance to a designer of being aware of the world around them and not just what is in front of them whilst scrolling on a screen. A sentiment we can all certainly learn from.

Jessica Hische is a letterer and occasional type designer based in San Francisco. Her hand lettering has become well recognised and can be seen in a variety of her high profile client work throughout the years from Starbucks, Penguin, Mailchimp and The Washington Post.One of Jessica’s most well known projects was her drop cap series for Penguin Random House. Here her hand lettering mixed with an illustrative look allows her distinctive style to shine. The designs are minimal and yet each letter standing alone subtlety tells a story about the theme of the book. 

She has become so well known for her lettering work that Hollywood eventually came calling. Director Wes Anderson commissioned a custom font for his 2012 movie titles of ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ a film focused on 2 kids adventures in a small New England town. Hische created a custom font titled ‘Tilda’ just for this purpose. Derived from the Edwardian Script typeface but a little less formal and with influence from the titles of La Femme Infidele. Hische created an elegant, cursive and almost fairytale looking typeface that had a hand written feel to it. The type itself became a huge part of the identity and branding of the film.

“- if you think about New England in the ’60s… it’s not like most places would be staying on top of the most current trends in type - So, using something from the ’40s made sense to me. If you think about a small, conservative New England town, lord knows all the printers and designers in town are probably still using type from years ago.” (Landekic, 2014)
