Chemise Sewalong 2025 - Step 1: Measuring and Cutting

Step 1: Measuring and cutting
Time to start the chemise! Find a measuring tape and a flat surface to lay out your fabric.
The necessary measurements are:
Desired full length of the chemise = measured from where you want the neckline to hit down to where you want the skirt to end
Arm length = measure from where a tshirt seam sits down to where you want the sleeve to end (+add 10cm to this length for floof)
Wrist width = measuring tape goes around the wrist, not too tight ( measure your elbow width for half length sleeves
Pieces to cut:
2 body pieces, full fabric width x 80 cm each
2 sleeves, 60 width x 70 cm length for full length each
2 underarm gussets, 18 x 18 cm each (these get cut in half to get triangles)
Binding (or buy bias tape), 4cm of the full fabric width is the easiest. (cuffs can be cut larger, or taken from this piece)
I find it helps to just draw it out on a piece of paper:
Cut all these pieces. This already includes 1cm seam allowances on all pieces. If you don’t have tailor’s chalk, you can measure on either side of the fabric, fold where you’ve measured and cut the fold. It’s less accurate, but it’ll do.
If you happen to know a quilter, steal their cutting board and rotary cutter, it’ll make this step a breeze. If you’re a dutiful sewer, iron all pieces. Conveniently become unable to read at this point if you are not.
Make sure you mark all pieces so you’ll know what goes where next step. If you don’t have a fabric marker, write it on a post-it and pin it to the squares.
Next up: starting the stitching!
Tl:dr – Cut all your squares according to the little diagram (amended with your own measurements)
