#10 happened to someone I know who bought a used backpack and then a few months later tried to travel with it. TSA stopped them bc the drug sniffer dogs went apeshit. They got very thoroughly searched :| Do you know how hard it is to explain that it really honest to gods "isn't mine man!" to the TSA?
Least fun parts of thrift shopping:
This thrift shop used to have jeans for like $3 and now everything is priced like it's new
Hear about a cool new thrift shop in town and you check it out and it's actually "vintage upcycling and consignment" so the shredded jorts are $250 on sale
This place used to get cool stuff but the tiktok haul resale people found it and now anything decent is snapped up and immediately resold for like $500 online
"Ooh this is cute" and then you check and it's shein
"Ooh this is cute" and then you check and it's Harry P*tter
The jacket of your dreams is in your price range but it's 3 sizes too small
Your absolute FAVOURITE thrifted item finally wears out beyond salvation and when you do research to maybe find a replacement it's been discontinued since 1983
Check the pockets and find used kleenex
STICKY THING
This was exactly what I was looking for but I can't get the weed remnants out
"This is obviously broken but I know how to fix it" (never fixes it)
#UGH yes to all the fast fashion trash. The prints are cute but the fabric is like cheap polyester lining material (like jacket liner)#This is why you gotta go out to the small town thrift shops#They all have sorta ridic pricing now but there are still gems to be found#My kid bought a pair of barely worn suede boots at the Goodwill for like $10#I looked them up because they looked expensive to me and they are $300 Italian leather boots#They're SUPER cute too#My mom found brand new $90 BOGS boots for my niece for $25 at a thrift store#She also found a new in box Instapot brand air fryer for $50 and it retails for $179#I found three huge sheets of Arches watercolor paper for $2.99 at a Goodwill. Not each. All three together.#Scored a bag of about 10 totally full Golden fluid acrylics for $5 at a cat shelter thrift store#Sample bottle size but still a good find#I once bought a romper for $3 and then found $5 in the pocket when I washed it. So basically I made $2 on the purchase#I did help a guy who was “picking” at the GW the other day because it can be a legit way to make money but I felt bad bc GW prices are craz#But I found a couple of books they had marked $4 and sell for $25+ on eBay and he was thankful#I think about doing it sometimes but OP's post is one reason I don't#Leave the good scores for those who deserve them!

#pleather pleather 50% acrylic 50% polyester and it was 98zł which is unexpected for a thrifted thing#but it was the weight based thrift store and it was 86zł per kg and the coat is heavy and kinda long#and it even had a tag and i checked out the brand online and its jackets were on poshmark and ebay and similar for like 30-40 bp#so its still okay i think#it has a small stain thats like white paint or what have you and i havent tried cleaning it yet but its like on the collar on the necks sid#so if youre wearing it noone will know

Hi! I’m not someone who normally like, sells or talks about my crafting too much, but this is such a cute idea! Plus, I just learned to knit socks, and I would love the chance to practice more.
The yarn would be what I used for the left hand photo, a reasonably thin multi-strand maroon/blue/white. (I’m low on sock-weight yarn right now because I haven’t done socks before this year, but I unraveled a sweater I never wear (90% acrylic, 10% polyester, machine wash cold and dry on low) so I have plenty of this.
You would just have to tell me 1. Length you want for the ankle (not like, knee or thigh-highs, please, just like your preferred height for a normal every day sock, excluding heel) 2. Circumference of your ankle or calf (depending on sock height obviously) 3. Length of your foot from heel to toe, and 4. Which kind of a heel you want (the left-hand sock is a German short row heel, which you can’t see well with that yarn but is very neat looking and similar to what you find on a store-bought sock. It can be kind of narrow, though. The right-hand sock has a heel flap and gusset with instep decreases, which is common on handmade socks, and from what I’ve read often is more comfortable for people with larger or wider feet). If you have an opinion on how long you want the ribbed (cuff) part of your leg to be you’re welcome to tell me that as well.
It’s been taking me a little over a week to knit one pair of socks, I’m knitting a pair right now, and I have one more lined up after this, for an idea of timeline. For full transparency the two pairs of socks pictured here are both pairs of socks that I have ever knit (not including the unfinished ones on my needles), although by the time I knit socks for any exchanges, I will have knit four pairs of socks, lol. They will be quite simple like these, no cabling or anything which wouldn’t show up well with the yarn I have anyway. But I can put little white accent stripes on them like I have here if you’d like!
Oh, I suppose I could also make amber and pearl earrings:
For some reason I can’t find other pictures in my camera roll even though I have done a few of these. Ignore the tarnish on the hook lol, this one is mine that I’ve worn a lot, obviously I have bright and shiny new hooks for strangers. I would just do whatever sort of design I felt like, but you could tell me if you want something fairly simple like this with just two or three beads or something fancy. It is real amber and real pearls, I have a whole little bag of each plus those little baby manufactured pearls at the top (still “real” in a sense- they’re made of mother of pearl, so it’s like, pearl stuff, just ground up and shaped more precisely into a nice round shape) and as you can see each one is going to be a little bit different but I do match the size and shape as best as I can for a pair of earrings.
I could probably do, idk, up to 4-5 trades? 4-5 of each? Earrings I can knock out in an evening whereas the socks take a bit of time, as I’ve said. I’ll ship within the US.
ISO: nothing in particular? Am I allowed to say I’ll just accept trades that interest me without having specific parameters as to the type of craft? My tastes in most things, clothing/accessories/art/decor/etc tend towards vintage. I like 40s-50s (mostly femme) fashions, and antique furniture. I like plants and outer space and retrofuturism and sci-fi, I garden, I sew. I try to be environmentally conscious in my purchases and use of resources. I like art and fancy pretty things and useful trinkets, but not so much knick-knacks and tchotchkes (well, I do like them, but my surfaces are pretty cluttered already).

HEY guess what you can do with wool? That's right!
DYE IT
With food coloring and kool-aid!! And also acid dyes, which are designed for this, but acid dyes can't be used with cookware you put food in, and Kool-Aid packets are 50 cents.
.. did they go up in price? Didn't they used to be 20 cents? Anyway
Tbh a big part of the allure of spinning my own yarn is dying either the fibers or the final product. I just like the sense of independence that comes from going "ah, I need a color, and I have a lot of white and a handful of dyes!". I did this a lot with my posable critters too, though acrylic and polyester are a lot more strict about what dyes will actually work.
(Though tbh? Soaking acrylic faux fur in watered down acrylic paint, waiting for it to dry, and then taking a slicker brush and brushing out the clumps will get you pretty far!)
The evidence of crimes past with that paint permanently on there. I think this fucker is almost old enough to make its own Tumblr account (but not in Australia 8()
I digress! Because I haven't been dyeing acrylic, but KERATIN!
I did actually try dyeing a chunk with the same semi-permanant magenta dye I use on my own hair, cos like. Hair is also keratin.
Actually, it was supposed to be a bisexual gradient from pink to blue, but when it came time to heat set the color, the manic panic blue just fucking vanished.
Lesson learned: Ion Color Brilliance is a good brand, Manic Panic is not.
My bestie has inquired about me spinning the yarn and knitting them a scarf, so I wanted to make what was basically a mockup of the different ways you can spin the fibers to get different colors effects. And also I got Kool-Aid this past grocery visit and have been chomping at the bit to use it.
@sivilityy enables me <3
BEHOLD, MY CHILDREN!
Dyeing wool with kool-aid or food coloring is very easy!
Step 1: Soak wool in warm to hot water with about a 1/3rd of a cup of white vinegar for 15 to 45min. The vinegar is a mordant, something that helps the fibers take up the dye.
Step 2: Mix your dye of choice into a pot of warm to hot water, close in temperature to the soaking bath. The more kool-aid or food coloring, the stronger the color. I was going for pastels, so I used half a pack for the blue and pink, and a single drop of yellow food coloring for the yellow. The purple... 8') We won't talk about the purple.
Step 3: Fish your wool out of its soak, give it a gentle squeeze, then plop it into the pot. I like to scoop out some of the vinegar water and pour it into the pot as well. For insurance!
Step 4: Heat your pot to just below boiling. You want steam, but little to no bubbles. Agitation + heat or sudden temperature changes = felt. You can't spin felt. If you want to to make felt, though, now you know.
Step 5: leave your wool at simmering for around 30 min. How do you know when its done?
it fucking sucks all the color out of the water. How sick is that?! In the few batches I've done, I haven't always gotten it to be clear like that but don't stress it. About 30 min seems to be good even if there's still some color in the water.
Turn off the burner and let your creations cool down in their soup. Or, if you're impatient like me, run your hottest tap water into a different pot, then pour your wool into the slightly cooler but still hot water, so it doesn't get a HUGE temperature shock. Don't use cold water, or you're gonna get felt! Give em a rinse in the hot water to get any extra color out.
Let 'em hang and dry, and you're done!
So far all of mine have felted a little bit? Which hasn't been so bad, I've just needed to fluff them up a little once they're dry. I want to try indirect heat with a steamer basket and see if that helps, but I only got the one basket and 4 colors this time, so I used the pots.
SCIENCE
#Technically art#Hey butters how is chapter 19 coming along#*flips water pitcher* YARN#If you want to try this yourself please look up a tutorial that wasn't written on a phone on Tumblr#I haven't skipped any steps but I didn't elaborate as much as I could have#Tbh I just wanted to show off how the color got complete sucked out of the water#But then my Adderall kicked in

We officially have a hobbit hole!
50 rows out of 810
I am using Stylecraft's ReCreate which is made from recycled garments! I imagine it's offcuts or "factory waste" but it's nice to use an acrylic blend that doesn't just feel like new plastic. It's a 40 wool 30 acrylic 30 polyester blend, the label claims the poly is derived from recycled plastic bottles as well but I'm not sure on the validity of that. Nonetheless, it makes a good gifting yarn. It's a lighter DK, I'm using 3.5mm needles here it's recommended for 4 though. I chose these colours (ink and ecru) because I liked the idea of it looking like ink on a paper as an illustration
My deadline for this project is the 27th of November and I started it on the 7th September - my aim is to have an 80 row chart done each week or ~ 10-15 row done a day! I'm making it for my dad's 50th birthday. This is such a beautiful project it's going to be difficult to give away. It's also going to be incredibly long - the original pattern is a lace weight and knitted on 2mm, I'm on 3.5mm as I said with a light DK weight

Hi! Saw a post a while back on "pointless wool blends". I'm a big fan of natural fibers, and I try in general to learn as much as possible about the different characteristics of materials. Do you know why blends with like, 10 % wool is pointless? Does the acrylic like, cut it? Does the warmth not work? Legitimately curious! <3
Hi! I'm not a materials scientist, just a knitter, seamstress, and person who gets real sweaty in polyester, but basically: You're going to be feeling the properties of the other 90%, not the 10% that's wool.
Like: Wool is warm when wet. Polyester is not. The 10% warmth you'll get from the wool is offset by the 90% chill from the polyester.
Wool is naturally self-extinguishing when exposed to flame. Polyester melts. The 10% of the fiber that will self extinguish will not matter when 90% of it is melting to your skin.
My wife (who works in performance apparel) says that she thinks (don't cite her) that the minimum amount you need to start getting the benefits of a fiber is 30%. I personally can wear stuff that's 50/50 cotton/polyester without descending into The Damp, so I don't buy anything with a lower percentage than that for my personal wardrobe.
Hope this helps!
