It bugs me that so many people's default example of published fanfic is 50 Shades of Grey.
What about West Side Story, a famous modern AU of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet?
What about Dante's Inferno, a self-insert RPF if I've ever seen one?
What about Wicked, a pre-canon AU of The Wizard of Oz?
Hell, what about Percy Jackson? There's definitely an argument to be made that that's a modern AU of various Greek myths.
Humans have been writing fanfic as long as they have been telling stories. In about the year 20 BC, our dear Roman poet Ovid wrote the Heroides, a series of aggrieved "letters" from the female characters of famous myths to their respective male heroes. Are you telling me that Ovid, writing a letter from the perspective of Queen Dido to Aeneas -- Aeneas, whose fantastical adventures were put into poem by Virgil -- wasn't writing an outsider-POV fic? A fic that is, in fact, translated in Latin classes world-wide today!
There is so much famous fanfic out there, but people tend to forget that it is fanfic once it becomes mainstream enough. And as a consequence of that, people who aren't into fandom don't see how beautiful fanfic is, and some members of fandom feel shame associated with writing and reading fic. But fanfic is beautiful, and it is something humans have always done, and it is nothing to be ashamed about.
So if you ever find yourself in a situation to give an example of published fic, think outside the box. Remember that published fanfics hide in plain sight; once they're famous enough, we no longer think of them as fanfic. And never forget that fanfic is a very, very old human tradition, and your ancestors who partook in it would not have wanted you to feel ashamed of it.

LI Book Headcanons
I've had this thought in my mind all day and NEED to get it out there.
(content warning: mentions of JK Rowling. Not to worry, it's bad mouthing her.)
Eden: his favourite damn series is Lord of the Rings. My man started with The Hobbit, then dived into Lotr. He's read EVERY. SINGLE. Elf song that the book has to offer. He's a fantasy nerd. However I would also see him read Pride and Prejudice. Perhaps some Terry Pratchett, too.
Avery: she grew up reading her parent's notes and bank account details. HOWEVER she's also read 50 Shades of Gray, and gave her the idea in mind that if she has enough money, she can acquire any lover she wants. REFUSES to acknowledge that it's Twilight fanfiction.
Kylar: speaking of Twilight, he is a FANATIC. adores the idea of being the misterious vampire, that attracts Bella in his unusual charm. He's read every book. And I mean every book, he's read the genderbent version, the Edward POV, anything written by Meyer he's read. He was neither team Jacob or Edward, he was team Kylar. Drew his self insert vampire oc with Bella NUMEROUS times.
Robin: he used to be a Potterhead. He was SO into it. Identified as a Hufflepuff, did the patronus and wand quizzes, his favourite book is the first one. He was in SHACKLES when JK Rowling came out as a gross terf. The level of betrayal he felt is indescribable. He woved to never touch the books again.
Sydney: do you know those books Christian oarents give to kids to let them know about Jesus early? Yeah, Sidney's read them. However, when she got freedom to grab her own books, she discovered that she DIGS Greek Mythology. She has a whole collection of Rick Riordan's books on the shelf, has attempted to draw her favourite characters. The movies don't exist to her and whenever anyone brings them up, she death stares them.
Alex: you know the Grimm fairy tales? Those are his favourites. Just the dark forest themes, the magic, the horror aspect of it... It just works for him. He's lived his whole life in the countryside, so he can fantasize about getting lost in the woods and finding a gingerbread house.
Whitney. I saved the best for last. So in hus childhood, in my headcanon he could never really afford to buy books, let alone his parents giving them to him. He read a bit of Dr Seuss but that was it. NOW that he can actually afford some stuff, he discovered the duality of man. Comics.
On one hand, he absolutely LOVES thise cute, kid friendly comics. Peanuts, Garfield, the Disney Mickey Mouse comics. On the other, he absolutely digs the over-the-top action manga shit. I'm talking Chainsaw Man, DevilMan by Go Nagai, Hells Angels by Shinichi Hiromoto. He doesn't have enough attention span to read a whole book, but he absolutely LOVES comics.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!

Ardetosaurus viator van der Linden et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
(Neck vertebra of Ardetosaurus viator, with reconstructed portions shaded in white, from van der Linden et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Ardetosaurus = burnt [in Latin] lizard [in Greek]; viator = traveler [in Latin, referring to the original specimen having been transported from the United States to Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands]
Age: Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian), between 149.21–150.44 million years ago
Where found: Morrison Formation, Wyoming, U.S.A.
How much is known: Partial skeleton of one individual including multiple vertebrae, part of the hips, and some limb bones.
Notes: Ardetosaurus was a diplodocid sauropod, making it a close relative of Diplodocus and Apatosaurus. Given that the type specimen preserves a large portion of the spinal column, it provides valuable information on how the anatomy of the vertebrae varied across different parts of the spine in sauropods. It also exhibits features of the vertebrae that distinguish it from all other known diplodocids.
The type specimen of Ardetosaurus was dug up in 1993–1994 and has been nicknamed "Brösmeli" (meaning "crumbly" in Swiss German). In 2003, part of the specimen, including several of its neck vertebrae, were destroyed by a fire at the Dinosaurier Freilichtmuseum in Germany (hence the name Ardetosaurus), in a case of malicious arson. Based on microscopic examination of its bone structure, the type specimen was an adult at the time of its death, probably about 22 years old.
(Schematic skeletal of Ardetosaurus viator by Ole Zant [scale bar = 1 m], with preserved bones in white and bones that were preserved but subsequently lost in light gray, from van der Linden et al., 2024)
Reference: van der Linden, T.T.P., E. Tschopp, R.B. Sookias, J.J.W. Wallaard, F.M. Holwerda, and A.S. Schulp. 2024. A new diplodocine sauropod from the Morrison Formation, Wyoming, USA. Palaeontologia Electronica 27: 50. doi: 10.26879/1380

Dream and How He Experiences Love
(Or: When the Unreal is at War with the Real, and Finally Understanding Unconditional Love Tightens the Noose Around Your Neck That Has Been There All Along)
And as always: Send me asks about everything Sandman-related!
Let me start this one with a few adjectives from the horse’s mouth (aka: Neil Gaiman said so 🤣) as to what Dream is actually like:
from: Vertigo Chase Card Set
So in short: This is probably the most accurate way to describe Dream in a nutshell, from the author himself, fully knowing that Murphy doesn’t lend himself well to be described in a nutshell.
And of course it’s absolutely fine if we want to head-canon him just being 5 out of those 50 (or none of them at all)—our stories are our own. At the end of the day, we went through a whole year of Tumblrfication (I might have made up that word), and getting back to the series will be tough. So is trying to align what the current prevalent perception of Dream is like in parts of the fandom, and what he is like in both comics and series (show and comics really aren’t that different where it matters, and I’ll die on that hill). I already worry about the fallout if I look at what happened with GO or OFMD, but that just as an aside.
Anyway, Dream in fandom spaces is often portrayed as either a pathetic wet cat who can’t get to grips with anything and constantly needs rescued in one way or another, or as a completely unfeeling arsehole incapable of relating to the human experience and being horrible all around. There are very few shades of grey in how some fans perceive him, when just the list of above adjectives shows us how complex he is as a character.
One thing that obviously comes up regularly are his relationships, be they romantic or platonic. So I just wanted to draw attention to the adjectives that relate strongly to the relational element in him (although they all apply in one way or another):
touchy, sentimental, cold, loving, [elusive], gentle, hurt, deep, intense, solitary, romantic, shy, intangible, lonely
Dream is the unreal. His way of loving relates very deeply to what stereotypical romantic love is: Romance and reality are a contradiction in terms—romanticism is dreaming because it is, at its very core, an idealised view. The intangible dream that comes back to bite us in the arse once reality sets in. And his flavour of love is the prototype of idealised and intangible (=romantic) and can never be anything else by his very nature.
And I’ve often thought that the way he experiences love is also a large part of why his existence is so difficult for him, and why he ultimately makes the choices he makes. Yes, he detests his function, but if he weren't so lonely (and weren't doomed to be so by his very purpose), he might find it easier to bear.
Let me look at, and draw parallels to, the 7 types of love as the Ancient Greeks perceived them [quick note about the image references: I would have loved to give more, but there is a limit. Also: Apologies I have no alt text for the comic panels at this point, I might add them at a later stage if I find the time]…
Eros
That’s both sexual and romantic love (to varying degrees), and it can be fleeting (like a dream) if not anchored in a less idealised view. So there’s your first cue—he totally experiences that kind of love.
The Ancient Greeks also thought it was a dangerous type of love, one that clouds our judgment and one that won’t last if not combined with some of the other types. And Dream himself knows this and probably relates (he detests his sibling Desire for “meddling”, after all). And yet, he is the intangible, the ungrounded, the unreal.
It’s all over every single one of his relationships we witness:
Killalla—“gifted” by Desire. We never get any cue as to what exactly they were up to, but it can be assumed desire, for whatever, played a large part in their relationship. Killalla makes no secret about it either (and is at the same time uncertain whether she truly loves him while being confused Dream might actually love her after what seems a very short time, at least in cosmic terms). Suffice it to say, he has a very idealised view of her and their relationship. Romantic idiocy at its best: He has literal stars in his eyes and is so grateful for Desire’s help he is basically kissing their boots in gratitude.
Alianora—again one of Desire’s gifts. And Dream tried, and I definitely think he was at least romantically (and physically) attracted to her (the art is very hard to interpret otherwise, neither is the context--she was gifted by Desire, after all). But this relationship is generally a tricky one because there is gratefulness and guilt n the mix, and that is sometimes a very unfortunate combination. He also couldn’t fully trust her because of his deep mistrust of D/desire. And lo and behold, of course the relationship soured when romantic and (potentially physical) attraction waned.
Nada—pursuing each other on and off, broadcasting sexy time all over the Dreaming because he's just so head over heels and literally bursting at the seams—need I say more? Yes, he does say to her that her body does not matter to him, which I 100% believe is true. He also says that he will love her as no mortal man can. But everything that transpires is still deeply informed by romantic attraction, because quite frankly: You don't feel love yet after you've barely met someone. It's again a deeply idealised view and that is something inherently romantic in tandem (in this case) with physical desire. Again, because D/desire was involved.
As to the particulars of Nada’s banishment to hell, and why Dream acted so out of character compared to his other failed relationships: You can find all of it here.
Calliope—read her speech at the Wake is all I’ll say. That is someone making romantic love so integral to their whole existence, I don’t even know where to start. He puts the world at her feet and makes sure she always comes first (quite literally) while they are still loved up…
Thessaly—he's the romantic idiot (affectionately) in the rain with his coat billowing in the wind, and referring to her “weighing him dispassionately and finding him wanting”. It was only a handful of months--you don't feel true, stable love at that point. Again, it has the idealised view of romance (and potentially sexual desire) written all over it. He would have given her the world, just like he would have given the world to Nada and Calliope. That is the trope of every freaking romance novel, and that is exactly how he perceives love.
Titania—who knows, she keeps her mouth shut.
Ludus
I think he has a hard time to be flirtatious and playful (at least, we don't really see it. We never really see him during the courting stage, and what went down with Thessaly was hardly "flirtatious". `Then again, bickering like they did in A Game of You is electrifying to some, so who knows. She also said at his wake he was cautious and nervous). And if he comes across as flirtatious (there is a charming on that list of adjectives after all), it’s just because he is so deliberate in everything he does that he might just push someone’s (right) buttons, so to speak. But that’s not the same as “no strings attached”-love, because I honestly believe he’s incapable of experiencing love that way. There is no “casual” with him. He always stays attached to the people/women he once loved, even if the relationship sours. He still loves each and every single one of them, he never stops. But he also doesn’t in a way that’s sustainable, and it’s an unsolvable conflict due to what/who he is.
Philia
Most closely translated as friendship and affection. Platonic love, if you will. It is also a love between equals. He has a hard time with it and only slowly learns what it means through his relationship with Hob. Needless to say: The Ancient Greeks valued platonic love as one of the highest forms of love. Hence, I’m personally reluctant to turn it into something else/slant it towards romance, because that’s exactly what this part of the story is about: His relationship to Hob is important and grows/lasts because it is not romantic in the comics.
Storge
Unconditional love for family, especially children. Based on complete acceptance and potentially sacrifice. Doesn’t need to be reciprocated. You feel it, no matter what, and you act accordingly. And for Dream and Orpheus, that didn’t work until it did. Or, let’s rather say: I don’t want to assume he didn’t feel it. But he pushed it down in his hurt and pride (as did his son in his grief). No further comment, because that one hurts.
Agape
Altruistic, universal, all-encompassing. And that’s so deeply at the core of his being, and so central to his whole conflict that I don’t even know where to start. From not wanting to kill the first vortex (or Rose, for that matter), to telling John Dee he’s hurting the dreamers, and that being his main concern while he himself was writhing on the floor in agony, to “humanity I love you”, to a million other things. He cares so deeply, there is such a deep concern for sentient beings in their entirety that it’s quite literally impossible to call it anything other than love. And it’s also what plays a large part in his demise.
Pragma
Oh, here we go. I honestly believe he likes the idea of committed and long-lasting. And he’s trying. So very hard. Calliope is the best example. Alianora was another one, because it’s not like they broke up swiftly (hard to tell how long they lasted, but since she had stayed in the Dreaming too long to go anywhere else, it wouldn’t surprise me if we’re actually talking a very, very long time. He called it “a goodly while”, and considering how old he is, I doubt that equals only months, or even just a few years, especially since he is fully aware how short his relationship to Thessaly was). And he wanted to stay true to his promise. But he is who/what he is: the unreal. And as the personification of that, love both feels real for him but will also forever stay intangible. It’s heartbreaking really. Again, it has written the contradiction between romantic love (the ideal) and pragmatic love (the thing that is grounded in reality) written all over it.
Philautia
And that’s the most heartbreaking one. He is incapable of self-love and full of self-loathing instead. The Ancient Greeks used to say that you can’t give what you don’t have. And it’s hard to feel compassion for the flaws we perceive in others if we don’t have that self-compassion for the exact same flaw in ourselves. And that one hurts in so many ways, from his not being able to forgive himself (which is mirrored in his relationship to Nada, who also couldn’t forgive herself—she didn’t need his forgiveness, she needed her own) to Orpheus being so much like him apart from one major difference: he’s mortal in spirit, and even immortality doesn’t change that. And Dream struggles with the part of his child that is so like him for a million reasons that would burst this meta at the seams, but again: it’s hard to love in others what we detest in ourselves, knowingly or unknowingly.
So in short: The particular flavours of love Dream feels (Eros, Agape, Philia growing slowly over time) and the ones he doesn’t (Ludus, Pragma, Philautia) are also at the very root of how the story goes.
And when he finally truly understands what Storge/unconditional love is--both in the way he reassesses his relationship to Nada but especially in how he finally submits to his love for Orpheus (with all that entails)--and when he allows it to become real, it’s what tightens the noose around his neck. But that noose has been around his neck loosely all along…

I love thinking about the Odyssey within and outside of the context of Greek mythology. Because The Odessey itself is technically newer than many of Greek myths. Like so much so than many historians think that it’s just like a separate written work.
Like with that as context, I think of The Odyssey as like fanfiction of Greek Mythology😂. Like to think a bro was like, “Oh I like that, lemme put my own twist on it” even back then. And the fact that it was such a banger and became so well know too? Like name a fanfic you know that got popular and it’s so good that it becomes it’s like own work. Like, look at 50 Shades Of Gray(stay with me, I promise this leads somewhere). It’s a fanfic of Twilight and yet it not only got massively popular, but it also got published! The same thing basically happened with The Odyssey LMAO.
Bro was just that good of a writer that it lasted centuries and is used in so many classrooms to teach good fucking writing. Honestly so cool fr.

Out of curiosity - do you know of / have an opinion on Katee Roberts - she's another one of those "sleek modern sexy updated Greek myth retellings" people. (Think 50 shades kinda but Greek myth flavored novellas).
I didn't know who she was until I googled her, then saw it was Neon Gods, which I've heard... things about, for sure. I'd have to read the book myself though and that... might take a while LMAO (I'm currently picking away at both Song of Achilles as well as the Emily Wilson translation of The Odyssey and after that I have a few other books to tackle sooooo it's gonna go on the list and I will check it out when I can! and once I do I probably will have opinions LMAO)

thinking about the nepo baby thing and like. god what is that suppsed to tell us as the audience?
it's clearly not a morality work and that's like. fine again characters are allowed to be flawed and make mistakes and aren't all aesop analogies yada yada wanted to clairify that stance
but i do want to look at that section. thanatos calls out persephone for being a nepo baby, hades then fights back before saying that yes, she is a nepo baby, but he is his own nepo-baby and therefore can't complain.
if we, clearly as she's trying to write here, are supposed to root for hades and persephone than, as it's pointed out, he's fully right and she is a nepo baby but tu quo que so he's...completely invalidaded?
What does this say to the audience? people who speak out against nepotism are wrong bc no they are qualified kinda and if they aren't it's ok actually and also people calling out nepo babies are probably nepo babies themselves so they can't say anything (it's not like they have EXPERIENCE in being a nepo baby from being a nepo baby)
like? is she overal trying to tackle the subject of nepotism children by showing that she's not fully qualified and being fucked by her a bazillion years older boss and getting away with murder and then making the argument that nepotism is fine because. ??????? what makes it ok? he's also a nepo baby? why does that matter? wHY IS THIS THE PLOT OR WAY YOU WROTE THE STORY?? WHY IS THIS THE MODERN INTERPRETATION OF HADES AND PERSEPHONE? WHY DO YOU HAVE THE PLOT TACKLING AGE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT LITTERALLY DOESN'T HAVE TOO?
the characters don't even act enough like the gods to warrent this story that like. she made this up. the greek gods have a historically pretty good record of what they were seen as. i mean fuck hades and hera are the two gods out of like 5 that would never fuck other people especially each other. the other ones are the three goddesses known for their asexuality. this clearly shows lack of intrest/actual care or that fully convinced now that like. im right this started as a 50 shades au.
good breakdown, i have literally no fucking idea what this comic is trying to say. my best guess is "love conquers all" but only persephone and hades' love. fuck everybody else. rachel just writes shit i dont think she understands any kind of implication

Back at it again with part 2 of the swaps found in my Blockbuster AU
Let’s go! Swaps under the cut for the viewing pleasure of those who don’t care
Shadow 🔁 Imperator Ix
Shadow: He behaves more like he does in SA2, Heroes, and 06 but more in an antagonistic role. He will be seen as the same as this version of the Nocturnus found the means of immortality through genetic alteration to the point of giving themselves longer lifespans, Shadow having what people would call immortality. He’s also the leader of the cult known as “The Brotherhood of Black Arms,” BBA for short, seeing Devil Doom as a divine being and seeks to bring its “glory” to their universe by merging the Twilight Cage with it. Keeps VA
Ix: He is now the immortal ultimate life form. His antagonistic side in the SA2 adaptation is similar to what he was like in Chronicles, just no insanity. He also is not as cunning, manipulative, or as good with persuasion as canon due to not having much wisdom by only being around 50 years old, with most of it in a comatose state. Not sure how he would act after redemption. I just know that I don’t want him to be an edgelord. He will not only be created by using Argus DNA but with chaos drives (Shadow’s original creation origin before Shadow 05) VA will be Jason Douglas
Silver 🔁 Shade
Shade: She is basically the same, but she can’t rely on technology to fight due to her world being in ruin by Dark Gaia 200 years in the future. So instead, she uses her stealth to get around Crisis City with Rouge providing cover if needed. She would soon get some tech of her own from stealing from Tails’s stuff in the present to finally fight along with the crew. VA will be Kimberly Brooks
Silver: With being the most notorious physic in the army of the BBA, he gets great acknowledgment for his efforts, even from Shadow himself. He is still skeptical about if merging the Twilight Cage with their universe is a good idea or not. He soon awakens to knowing for a fact that it isn’t due to being deceived for so long and immediately joins the side of good. Keeps VA
Cream role = Marine
Charmy role = Cream
Marine Role = Charmy bee
Think of Marine as a found family little sister of sorts for Vector who he protects with his life. She still behaves the same though, just no pirate stuff. VA is Kayli Mills
Cream, like her mother, is a member of the CAG along with her mother and Mighty. Best not to separate mother from daughter, right?
Due to not having any knowledge about Sonic Rush Adventure, I sadly will have to leave Charmy’s bio blank. I do know that he would be a pilot instead of a sailor.
Wisps 🔁 Chao
The Wisps would not have their variants who have different powers, just their appearaces, like Null Wisps filling the role of a Dark Chao
Chao variants will have the color powers such as Dark Chao giving us that demonic hungry hungry hippo lol.
Argus role = Devil Doom
I want Shadow to still have some relation to the Black Arms Remove VA
Black Arms role = Argus
Think of this as an alien species inspired by Argus from Sobic Chronicles and the 100-eyed giant of the same name from Greek Mythology
The E-Series role 🔁 The Gizoid
Emerl 🔁 E102 Gamma
Obviously the self-sacrificing robots have to swap. Gamma keeps his VA while Emerl’s will be Zach Aguilar
Gemerl 🔁 E123 Omega
Pretty similar, so I’d say it’s okay to swap Omega keeps his VA while Gemerl’s will be Johnny Yong Bosch
E101 Beta 🔁 Perfect Charib
These two are pretty similar to one another, so I’d say it’s a good swap. Beta: Keeps VA, Charib: remains undecided
E100 Alpha / Zero 🔁 Perfect Scylla
Scylla: He would chase after Tikal as she tries to save some animals from deforestation and due to her knowing to much of Noahs future plans. With him being so unhinged, I think it really works out well. VA remains undecided
Zero: I see it best to not separate Zero from the rest of the E-series. Keeps VA (if he has one, of course)
Rouge 🔁 Blaze
As the queen of the newly renamed “Unbra Dimension,” Rouge is the protector of the newly renamed “Umbra Emeralds.” Be careful, though. Rouge is very protective and possessive of these gemstones, and she will keep you away from them with her control over shadows (umbralkinises)
Blaze is now a Gem collector, but think of her more as the Indiana Jones type. Keeps VA
Illumina role = Solaris
Solaris Role = Gaia
Gaia Duo role = Lumina and Void (Components of Illumina)
Mephilis takes Void’s role, and since never takes his form based on Shadow, he will take form of the person he talks to. If multiple people are there, he’ll take form of the previous person who talked to him. He will act like he’s a sorrowful being, but it’s a trick to get back with Iblis to become Solaris again. Keeps VA
Iblis is just the same, a mindless monster of fire
Dark Gaia is the same, a monster of darkness. All that’s different is that it’s scaled down in size.
Chip is now an antagonist who sees the biological world as out of balance with so much sapien life, so he seeks to wipe out enough of the species to bring balance as normal Gaia. I’d say they’d go for about 3/4 of the world population. Keeps VA
Void is in Chip’s role, and he’s now a good guy as he, the god of nightmares, helps Knuckles in the events of my Unleashed adaptation.
Lumina will be in the antagonist as Commander Noah will seek the goddess of dreams to make his dream of ruling the world a reality.
Big 🔁 Froggy
A frog mobian girl who is always looking for her fat, purple cat. Froggy, now named Jelly, will be voiced by Cristina Vee
This will probably be it for now. I’ll cone back in the evening of my timezone to give you all the next part

Sunday 20th October 2024
Sunday, a day of rest, we had the usual exercise, then after breakfast it was to assume a prone position by the hotel swimming pool. The sensible Australians arranged themselves under whatever cover or shade that could easily be acquired, merely the glint of their Ray Bans giving their location away. Meanwhile, anyone with a Made in England tag is 6 foot out on a sunbed benefitting from the mid morning sun head to foot, smothered in factor 50 whilst remarking how hot it is today. Martine pursued aqua cooling by way of breaststroke and front crawl, whilst I looked on amazed that she didn't actually sink as I know I would. Had I joined her, an international rescue operation of epic proportions would have been invoked with all manner of lifesaving equipment deployed. Better off remaining on the sunbed I felt. Swimming never was something I found coming naturally to me. Mind you, I don't think I have ever come across a more uncomfortable sunbed. It was the sort of device maybe designed in the middle ages as respite between turns on the rack.
Now, even whilst in a dazed state being conveyed here from the airport in our Uber, the driver found it necessary to express condolences that we had pretty much missed the opportunity of a lifetime to visit their local market. He brightened when he found out we would be here on Sunday and confidentially informed us that we were in luck because they repeated the whole thing today! Our cup clearly ranneth over and after researching the whole thing in a professional way discovered a number 4 bus would take us there in time for a 4 o'clock kick off. After all, this is billed as an event in the Darwinian calendar that really should not be missed!
The bus turned up on time at the terminus and a smaller than expected crowd got on considering this was such a big event in the calendar. Alighting at the field the market is held in, the waft of food was all pervasive and from all cultures, Chinese, Thai, Shri-lanka, Greek, Indian, Italian and the list goes on. We were not hungry when we arrived, but pretty soon the olfactory senses persuaded us that maybe there was room for a little morsel of something, and we had been strongly advised to try Darwin Laksa; a soup and noodle concoction with different meats and seafood with a SE Asia origin. We opted for the option, 'the lot'. Something there for everyone. We took our little bowl over to a table area where a local band called Dad's Band was setting up. Repertoire, Blues. They kicked off at 5pm and were quite OK. Various acts were set to follow such as the Darwin kids dance groups followed by more music. It was a very jolly evening but we needed to leave early because the last bus was to go by 7.30pm. It was quite nice to see indigenous folk there, either taking part in some way, or participating with their little sticks that they kind of drum with. I'm not sure I like it especially when they point their little stick at you. The area the market is held is a rather sensitive site for the Larrakia peoples, the Mindil Beach, since inadvertently during some building work, they managed to JCB up a pile of Aborigine type bones! Ancestor warning bells, down tools and build a nice new memorial instead! Phew I think we got away with that one.
Number 4 turned up on queue and off we went back to Darwin sharing the experience with a large group of Aborigines who were quite loud, very tribal and speaking their own language. (no spears) Before being made an honorary member of the tribe we alighted and checked into the 4 Pines Pub again for the end of Happy Hour, and a Croc Pale Ale.
Now Darwin is definitely not representative of Australia as a whole. It is something of a microcosm with a very strange cocktail of people. For instance a fairly normal looking pub across the road from 4 Pines had a music night on the go. Little folk singer with acoustic guitar playing nice little folky type songs. Then 3 metres away from him is the town nutter desperately trying to dance to a folk set which was extremely distracting and if the guitarist hadn't kept his dignity, the dancer could quite easily have found the lost chord over his hippy type head. It has to be said, charmingly, there are some odd people here and I wouldn't rule out there being some with 6 fingers but we still very much like the place and we feel very privileged to have spent some time in this very diverse but young place.

🍄- share a headcanon for one of your favorite ships or pairings
Jan/River - January is constantly stealing River's clothes, and the two of them will try to complement/match outfits whenever possible. But I think I talked about this headcanon before
Merrick/Raphael - Merrick's a lousy cook (he's learning and he's trying!!! But he's English!!!) but Raphael will eat his meals up regardless (think: HuaLian)
Okay and I know I'm on the Pulleyverse blog but since it's specifically you asking this I need to add and discuss this. JunKeema from The Spear Cuts Through Water: Post-canon, when these two duel, even if they can't read each other's minds, they can still read each other's moves. I like to think its a bit of residual godhood, but also that's just love babyyy. The fights always end with somebody's lips getting smooched, that's just how it is I don't make the rules.
🪲- add 50 words to your current wips and share the paragraph here
okay so not 50 words but whatever charles/sing crack fic snippet
🥤- recommend an author or fanfic you love
I'm going to keep this as brief as possible. Read Work of All Saints by kaikamahine. Who knew a 200k word Disney fanfic could irrevocably change my entire being and what I live for as a person. I read it at least once a year (usually around November). I've borrowed a lot of the phrasing in this fic for my own writing because it's just that good. If I could wish for a certain writing style, it would be this exactly. I wish there were more fics and novels written like this.
“This” is Santa Cecilia. And it is, in Imelda’s opinion, the kind of town that only cowboys and God would care about. It has a single cobblestoned street leading through the center of town to the cathedral of the same name — smaller, newer than the cathedral in San Juan Albán, with arched doorways and red Spanish tile and a single rose window behind the altar. A statue of the patron saint herself stands under an arbor in the middle of the plaza, her eyes downcast and a lyre held against her ribs like she’s carrying tablets from Sinai. Whoever sculpted her clearly had no idea what the real Cecilia looked like — Imelda doesn’t think she could have been Mexican, but that’s how they’ve made her look: braided crown, hoops in her ears, steel-toed shoes for goring snakes peeking out under the hem of her skirts. At her feet, a collection of mariachi men drowse, hats pulled low to shade their faces, for all appearances part of the same statue.
I love this author so much. Honorable mentions from them are Probability Engine (Watchmaker), Grenadier (Arcane), and μήτηρ, in the Greek (Hades)
#ask#ask game#this is me holding myself back from gushing about Work of All Saints BY THE WAY.#i will NEVER EVER shut up about it#its one of those stories that you remember forever and ever. i saved it to all of my devices just in case it ever disappears.#it should be required reading#its one of those stories that make you feel glad for this life. im not kidding.

Someone You've Never Seen Before
A Kyle Spencer Fan Fiction
frat!kyle AU, fem!main character, sexual themes, mature language, use of drugs and alcohol, frat boy antics
1.
There's a beautiful simplicity in the way college students choose their seating arrangement in large lecture halls. No assigned seats. Just vibes. On the first day of class, everyone shuffles in, bleary-eyed and foreboding. The semester is fresh. There's potential. There's dread. There's an uncertainty. How will this class be? Will I find it easy? How's the professor? Is there anyone I know here?
They find a seat in an empty hall that looks appealing to them. A seat they will sit in for the rest of the semester. They go from the freedom of winter or summer break back to the confines of grades and assignments.
Some prefer the back row, some prefer the seat closest to the exit, and others prefer to stay hidden, being just another head among the sea of students. I, personally, always found myself in the middle somewhere. I could hide easier. Never the back row, though. My eyesight was too poor for that.
Calculus is easy for some. For me, an English major, not so much. I knew I would struggle horrendously in class when I sat down in the fifth row on the first day. My mind was not oriented in the realm of math. I knew dozens of papers and other writing assignments would be due in my other classes. Looking over the syllabus, it was clear that I wouldn't be able to wrap my head around derivatives and complex analysis.
I sighed internally and opened my notebook, preparing for the worst. It was the fall semester of my third year at Tulane, and it snuck up on me, truly.
The school wasn't large. Class sizes weren't huge, so it was hard to hide, but I sure as hell tried. I thought I did a pretty good job of being unknown. I was born and raised in a small town near Salem, Massachusetts. I grew up in the kind of neighborhood you'd see in movies. Victorian-style houses painted with bright colors, trees lining the streets that would turn shades of orange in the fall. We'd get some pretty cold weather and tons of snow in the winter. I basically existed in only Doc Martens, oversized corduroy jackets, sweaters, and baggy jeans.
That upbringing put me in a weird position in New Orleans. I liked to think of my town and Nola as sister cities. They had the old-world charm of small main streets lined with shops and the kind of architecture that made you think you'd stepped back in time. I was a pretty smart kid, so Tulane was enticing due to its low acceptance rate and similarity to my hometown. I got in with my high SAT scores and GPA. My scholarship essentially gave me a full ride. It seemed like the perfect place for me. I didn't anticipate just how out of place I'd feel.
For one, the weather never dipped below 50 degrees, even in the winter. It was more humid there, as well. I suffered a fashion crisis, knowing I couldn't rely on large jackets for comfort. I moved as far away as I did to get out of the small-town rut. Everyone I knew went to UMass or Boston. Tulane was a new start. As time passed, though, Tulane became just another small town to me.
Everyone knew everyone. No one was above petty drama, not even me. News about social matters got around quickly. There was no class I joined that I didn't know a single person in. As much as I wanted to disappear, I easily got swept up into things. For example, I wasn't one to engage in the school's Greek activities. But even then I still went to their parties to get drunk, which meant I rubbed shoulders with almost every frat bro and sorority girl on campus. I would always be home by midnight, though.
Greek life was the lifeblood of Tulane; the thing that kept the social scene going. Everyone was involved. Everyone. I refused out of defiance, but even my closest friend and roommate, Lily, was in a sorority. I wasn't particularly interested in paying to have friends, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Lily and I met freshman year. I put in an application for a random roommate pairing; an unintended consequence of me knowing no one at Tulane. I got extremely lucky, though. The housing department paired me with Lily Davies, an education major with dreams of one day teaching kindergarteners. She had pin straight blonde hair, piercing green eyes, and a bright smile. Despite how innocent she sounded, Lily was the sickest son of a bitch I'd ever met, and I loved it.
She was a crop-top-and-leggings-wearing-bastard with the sickest sense of humor. She was wild and witty with a sunny disposition. She blurred the lines of the dichotomy between popular and weird. Lily was a Louisiana-native, born and raised in Lafayette. Tulane was also her way of getting away from people from her high school (who had mostly gone to U of Louisiana Lafayette).
Our friendship was the only reason I survived at school. Lily would force me to leave the dorm and socialize. There was a standing, open-invite to any of her sorority events for me. I rarely ever went, but it was nice to not be alone all the time.
After freshman year, Lily and I moved into an off-campus, two-bedroom apartment. Both of us had no problem footing the bill, as my scholarship and her in-state status made school itself cheap for us. She had the opportunity to move into the Pi Phi house, but she declined out of respect for me, knowing I'd have to find another random roommate again. There was a small chance that it would work out as well as it did the first time. I felt bad being the thing stopping Lily from branching out, but she swore she didn't mind, and that she'd "rather live with The One And Only Hannah Martin."
She balanced me. She was the pop-music to my indie-records. The Nike to my Converse. The silver to my gold. You get it.
Two years of school went by in a flash. By sticking my head in the books, only emerging for occasional social time, I managed to forget to "cherish my youth," as old people would say. Another thing that snuck up on me was my math requirement. I needed one math class to graduate. Most English majors try to get it done in their freshman year to get it out of the way. I, instead, prolonged my dread until I couldn't any longer.
As I surfaced out of my sea of thoughts, I noticed the lecture hall had filled up quite decently. I took stock of who was in the class, rolling my eyes inwardly at some. Archie Brener. What a loser. The professor stood at the front of the room, shuffling through his papers, just two minutes until he was due to start the lecture.
The number of people filing in had dwindled significantly, and the seat next to me was still not occupied. I celebrated internally, happy that I would get more legroom and a chair to throw my bag onto. My elation was short-lived, though, as the hall's door swung open with a crash, and a blonde-haired boy rushed in to grab the first open seat he could see. I whipped my head around to see what the noise was about as Kyle Spencer rounded the chairs and rushed down the stairs, eyes scanning the crowd. Despite his rush, he made a point to fist-bump Archie as he passed him. Of course, he chose to sit in the seat next to mine.
He sat with a huff and hurriedly unzipped his backpack, pulling out an already-crumpled notebook. I tried not to stare, but the last time I had seen him, he was streaking through the Kappa Lambda Gamma house. I averted my gaze when his naked form ran past me, but I had already seen too much of him and his "brothers."
"I nearly didn't make it," Kyle panted next to me, clearly catching his breath from running here. "I read it wrong. Thought this class was in another building." I looked over to see who he was talking to. It quickly dawned on me that he was talking to me.
"Oh, uh, haha," I replied awkwardly. He leaned forward in his seat again, returning to fumbling through his bag. I returned my gaze to my notebook and began to idly draw some flowers in the corner of the blank page before me. I felt someone tap my shoulder, though.
"Sorry," Kyle whispered, "but do you have a pencil? I can't believe I forgot mine." He laughed shyly to punctuate the end of his question. I nodded and reached into my own bag, producing a brand new no. 2 pencil for him to use and abuse.
"You can keep it," I murmured. It was about to be a long semester.
