#30f and snowing

Snow is still falling. Nick next door did the whole driveway earlier this morning and there’s already another 2 inches. I shoveled between the house and the garage, got covered right away of course but it’s ok I’ll keep shoveling. Few cars driving, I do feel very bad for the people who have to go to work. David’s doctor is closed today so they’ll have to reschedule hopefully sometime this week, but it’s okay cause I didnt want to drive this afternoon.

-1⁰C is a warm winter day. How do you think snow piles up? It's because it's always below 0⁰ for the entire winter (which also keeps the lakes frozen). It's not being an extremophipe, it's living in place with real winters, with snow and ice.
Winter temperatures where I live range from -30⁰C (-22⁰ F) to like 5⁰C (41⁰ F) (on a ridiculously hot day normally near the fall or spring). Canadian take : It's not really that cold above -15⁰C / 5⁰F
#No joke at 30F -1C the freaks who cant wait for summer will deadass go out in short sleeves if it's “not for long”#normal people will be happy about the hot day but maybe sad about snow sports#caus its too warm for that

I guess instead of weather so cold cars break down in the lead up to my birthday we're getting severe storms and maybe tornadoes this year in lead up to my birthday
ngl it makes miss the -10F with a -30F windchill. But not here. Our southern place isn't built for northern temperatures like that.
#so hopefully the power won't like go out for a few days#or something worse than that#i mean my birthday is notorious for problems#at least two cars have broken down#although one of them was the day before i was born#i'm glad i wasn't born in the mall parking lot#and i got locked out of the house in 6 inches of snow once#and once of the three times i slipped and fell off the bus at uni was on my birthday#which is why i bought a fuzzy coat so i could walk in said -30F windchill and never do the bus again if i could help it#weather talk#things i think about#yammering

Complaining about having to wear leggings under my jeans because my unripped pair are in the wash vs complaining about how unwintery it is right now
#Christmas is next week but the Christmas music sounds as dissonant as it would in like. September#it's 30f but there's no snow and it's supposed to be FIFTY DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. ON CHRISTMAS.#>:(

Oh! I have a favorite cartoon for this!
I'm curious:
rb for sample size, you know the drill.
also, please tell me your local stock comments for small talk about the weather.
#ah yes#the midwest us#yesterday it was almost 80F#today it was below 30F#we had tornado watch last night and thunderstorms this morning#it has been unseasonably warm this week but if it snowed tomorrow i'd be less surprised than finding a walrus OR fairy at my door#polls

what they don't tell you about starting a routine of taking regular walks is that it rearranges your entire brain to want to do it every day. i literally went out three times last week in 30F weather? i tried for four times and only turned back when it stopped snowing and started freezing rain instead? i feel like i understand what dogs feel like every day
#who am i#<- actually this isnt that surprising for the person who is notoriously obsessed with hiking/backpacking/outdoors#the Neighborhood Walk is just the accessible version of that to me

I grew up in Minnesota, so to me it’s not cold until the high school boys stop wearing shorts in the snow!
On the topic of weather, it’s getting colder in Gaza where my friend Hamada lives with his family, too. There are many young children, even a baby under 2 months old, and they all live together in a tent that does little to protect them from the elements. It’s getting harder and harder to find essentials like flour and diapers.

i think it's very funny that for the six years i lived in texas i had no desire to experience a temperature under 30F or, gods forfend, snow, (though i had to experience both at least twice. very unfair.) but now that i'm somewhere that kind of gets a winter i'm thinking about a Fun Snow Vacation for christmas. probably because my impression of DC winter is that it's cold and wet enough to be unpleasant but not cold enough to be dramatic.

I'm pretty jealous of you getting snow, even if it was only for a day! I live in a part of Australia where it never gets cold enough to snow, I've never even seen snow but I want to so badly :( It's summer here right now and it gets so hot I hate it!
What's the hottest and coldest it gets where you live?
wow australia is really far away from where i am!! im sorry you havent seen snow, i cant believe its summer there!! :o
hmm i think the coldest its gotten here is like around 25-30f? usually thats when we get the snow. in summer, it can get to around 95f - i dont know if its ever been over 100f but i hope it doesnt get that hot! :o

I am once again thinking about the time that I was teasing my brother in law about being from New England and complaining about how cold it was in New Orleans at 45f. He politely explained to me that the entire infrastructure of New Orleans is designed to keep things cool. The floors are cool tiles. The windows and walls are uninsulated, and breezes blow through homes by design. There is as little heat retention and reflection as possible. He correctly pointed out that I would also be cold in 45 if my floors were freezing, cold wind was constantly blowing, and no one's houses had heating.
We have GOT to change the way we talk about weather everywhere. Two kinds of changes are going to happen as a result of climate change, and we need to increase our empathy for both.
Places are going to get weather they have no infrastructure for. New Orleans has no infrastructure for cold. New England has no infrastructure for 100f heat. My bro in law might be tempted to mock me for being wussy about 100f, (thankfully he hasn't) but our infrastructure isn't set up for this. I also worry because hurricanes are being more unpredictable and a single category 1 hurricane could easily cover the entire state of NH, and we DEFINITELY aren't set up for that. Even though a cat 1 wouldn't even bother Florida.
Places are going to get much more extreme versions of the weather they ARE used to! When I was a kid you could count on at least 7 snow days off from school a winter, and a few days when it would get down to -5f or even -10f. Last winter we had one or two snow days, very little snow, and one day when it dropped to -30f! We are not set up for that kind of cold! Rainy places could get a bunch of floods. Hot places are going to get VERY hot. When people complain about their 'normal' weather being too extreme we need to listen and believe them.
It's totally fine to be critical of other people's climates. I would NEVER live in a place that's 100f regularly. But when those people complain about 110f we can't shrug it off. There is no "they should be used to it". Or "if you don't like it why do you live there". Climate change is a world wide problem, and being snarky at others for their weather crisis is shitty.
It's important to take climate change seriously everywhere. It's important to remember everyone is affected. If someone tells you their weather has been weird, or unusually strong, or unbearable, it's important that we take that seriously and believe it for everyone. We cannot brush off climate change as just some regional complaining!
#NH has to scramble to set up cooling centers because they don't have much of a system for them#and people without ac don't necessarily know where to go for an ac break#people don't know how to recognize or handle heat stroke or heat illness#people don't even necessarily know when they're at risk for heat related illness#but we have been learning the last few years

1) What is your hearthome? Is it a fictional world, a biome, a country, a town, a concept, or something else?
My hearthome is fictional taking place in some world. In my mind probably the same place threatening wolves are from :'). I specifically roam in plains, forest and mega flora forests.
Typically in the niche of a prey animal.
2) How did you come to realize you had a hearthome?
I have a very strong pull towards plains to the point where ill have field naps and nap in a field. Fresh hay is a super comforting scent to me. As is dried grasses.
3) Is your hearthome tied to any other alterhuman identities you have? If so, did one identity lead to another?
I believe its tied to threatening wolves in some way. I feel like my bird brain specifically is afraid of them.
4) Is your hearthome possible to physically visit? If so, have you been, or are you planning to go? If not, do you have any alternative methods of visiting?
I like in prairie so i usually make nests and have prairie naps and attack my werewolf boyfriend cause im broody /lh
5) Write at least one paragraph describing what it’s like to be at your hearthome.
8ft-10ft talk grasses dense and difficult to get through. There is no trees in sight and gentle hills of red and yellow grass. It's winter so it's mildly cold at 30f. There is no snow. At the base of the grass its a cozy 60f. Animals bundle together and make nests. Predators wade through the grass. Fires devastate the area. Change is constantly and rigorous.
6) Do you feel ties to other living things from your hearthome, such as plants and animals?
Prairie chickens-we share similar niches
Cinnamon, sage, rosemary- all smells id encounter in a more wild scent
7) How do you cope with feeling homesick?
I touch grass. If i cant touch grass i make a nest inside.
8) Say one thing you like about the place you live right now. (Nothing identifying, please be safe!)
MMMM PRAIRIE GOOD
