Some thoughts on journaling and on blogging. 

I was listening to KPFA radio out of Berkeley California today and heard parts of a Betty Reid Soskin documentary.. She is now 102 years old, but retired as a national park ranger at age 100.

She was a pioneering blogger who started a blog about her life in 2006 when she was 85. She told the story of her life from memory. She said that remembering depends on who in the room is doing the remembering.. She blogged about her life and the black struggle in America through the years of her life. She was also a singer.

I like what she said about remembering. It depends who is in the room doing the remembering. A straight person and a gay person may remember the same situation in different ways. Same for a black person and a white person. The important thing in a blog or in a journal is to document the situation from your perspective. Don’t be bullied into  writing only what flys as cultural norm. Your past experience will stain and color your take on the present. Write from that place.

A friend of mine in the gym this morning asked me how my blog was going? I told him it was going well. I’ve told him in the past that the blog includes some hard truths about my life. He said that a mess without a message is just a mess. He said it’s good that I’m vulnerable on the page, and that I let the mess of my life howl out some inherent resulting truths. I try to  use the dark side of life to gain insight when I can.

Tumblr said yesterday that I have now posted 500 blogs. I’ve been blogging for 13 months today. The daily blogs seem to roll out and evolve and take on a life of their own.

In other regards, I'm really hoping The Wild Robot succeeds in theatres.

I've needed something animated and sci-fi in my feed for a while now, and Dreamworks deserves another win.

Mr. Frank

My old neighbor Mr. Frank passed away two days ago. He had moved to Florida a year ago, and passed after a long illness. It has been nine years since the passing of his wife.

I wasn't as close to Mr. Frank as I was with his wife, but my biggest impression of him was is larger-than-life personality, the spicy smell of cologne, and his booming baritone voice. Mr. Frank was such a jokester, he was always so thoughtful and willing to help out his friends and neighbors.

I can't remember the last time I saw him before be moved away, he'd already seemed diminished and gradually more frail. I'm glad he was able to live out his last days in the Florida sun, as he always wished. I know he'll be coming home soon, and then I'll get to see him again. But now, I hope he's living happily with Miss Alice in heaven smiling down with his bright white smile and a signature pair of shades.
