Konoha's name in braille
Japanese braille (tenji): このは あきのり
English braille: Konoha Akinori
Korean braille (jeomja): 코노하 아키노리
This is so random. I really need to increase my skill range. By the way, fun fact, Japanese braille has spaces unlike Japanese. And this is kana braille because kanji braille is way too complicated for me.
Unicode versions in case anyone's interested (warning, it looks a little misleading: dots on the right look like they're on the left):
このは あきのり ⠪⠎⠥ ⠁⠣⠎⠓
Konoha Akinori ⠠⠅⠕⠝⠕⠓⠁⠀⠠⠁⠅⠔⠕⠗⠊
코노하 아키노리 ⠋⠥⠉⠥⠚ ⠣⠋⠕⠉⠥⠂⠕
#katrina posts#konoha akinori#braille#i have very normal interests thank you very much#konohafestivalmonth#also just the basic part of kana braille is actually really easy#like really really easy#can memorize in 5 minutes as long as you know the layout of the alphabet#i haven't looked up datuken and stuff yet (because there are non in Konoha's name) but maybe i'll just go and learn the entire thing#why not#also there's a bunch of contraction rules in english braille that i don't know#and it's possible that the 'in' contraction wouldn't work because the pronounciation is “a-ki-no-ri”#but. probably not. hopefully not.#the Korean braille i am totally confident in#maybe i shouldn't be though because i misspelled 'ㄴ' as 'ㅌ' (in braille) TWICE#they aren't even similar looking i just mindlessly clicked the braille that looks like the original character#i feel kinda bad tagging this with the festival month tag but it's probably fine. there's only like 3 posts with the tag on tumblr and one'#i wish i could. do useful things with braille.#i don't personally know anyone who needs braille though#if i did i would translate all sorts of stuff for them (if they want me to) and only charge the printing fee (roughly 10 cents per page)#anyways enough rambling i love Konoha#konoha

guys i've been my own boss for so long that the prospect of going back to work full time is honestly making me very annoyed. i just want to write my stories and make my own animated short film. i don't want to animate things that have to match somebody else's vision. i didn't realize how creatively free i felt during this break until today, when i got back to work, and i kept finding myself being frustrated that i have to animate something that isn't mine. i know part of this is just me having to get back in the groove of working, and i also know this is the only way i'll make a liveable wage, and i know turning down the job now would be a bad move because we're in a recession and we have to take what we can get, BUT LIKE. i'm just. feeling so annoyed right now
#em dashes#ahhthhhhghhghfjhj what do i have to do to fund my own projects#i know people are like 'do a patreon! get kickstarter!'#should i do that? how do i even get it off the ground? i know there must be hundreds and thousands of people trying to kickstart their stuf#there's no guarantee of success. how do i make people care enough to give me money#my youtube is monetized now but it'll be years before it actually starts raking in a proper wage and not just like 3 cents per video

Just learned that the raise my company offers for becoming the next level above where I am, which would give me at least double the workload, is, at most, 5%, which is about $0.75.
This same company also requires all of it's employees to undergo an exam and an interview for the chance to get promoted.
For, max, $0.75.
And they wonder why they can't get people to move up in the company.
#an exam and an interview for the chance to get $0.75 more per hour for more than double the workload#yeah I think I'll just stay where I am#again this is the *maximum* raise#the more common raise is 2.5% which is approximately $0.35#an exam an interview and double the workload for ten fucking cents over a quarter#any upper management out there wondering why they can't hang on to workers?#yeah this is why#there's no such thing as getting organically promoted at my company#you *have* to take an exam#I've been working here for over 3 years at this point#if I didn't know how to do my job by now I would've been fired two years ago#take your bullshit redundant exam and shove entirely up your ass#we're fucking game testers not doctors like holy shit#trash king vents

Trying to think of a fair + affordable pricing model for editing services once I finally start up my website this summer but I'm sort of struggling!
It's really my goal to be able to work with like, lower income + marginalized + newer/indie authors who would not be able to afford most editing services but it is also my goal to pay my rent and not consistently make less than minimum wage lol. I work very fast so this feels very achievable but I'm not sure how to implement it. I'm like... maybe a sliding scale and just trust that people will respect the honor system (and that I'll get enough clients paying standard industry rates to balance out the lowest rates)? Maybe I offer different levels of service so I can give like, one-pass copy edits for dirt cheap & then charge normal amounts for more involved edits?
I have seen examples of people doing both of these things in a limited capacity but am very curious if any editors who follow me have advice for how to balance this out ! (Would also love to hear from low income authors what an "affordable" edit looks like for you bc I am guessing based on my financial situation in a city with some of the highest wages & rents in the US so I don't know how widely applicable my perceptions are!)
#I'm currently editing on upwork & have taken jobs from .5-3 cents per word lol#I do adjust my time and effort accordingly already but I also do things like#put in additional time & effort when working w authors in the genres I like to work in#so I can get glowing reviews/testimonials that are like... pertinent.

Why are British teenage girls so unhappy? Here’s the answer (Caitlin Moran, The Times, Sep 13 2024)
"The report, by the Children’s Society, found that British 15-year-old girls are the most unhappy in Europe.
British girls aged 10-15 are “significantly less happy” with their life, appearance, family and school than the average boy — and their happiness is still declining.
Boys’ life satisfaction, meanwhile, remains broadly stable. (…)
But I still didn’t have an “aha!” moment about why this so disproportionately affects girls until… I talked to some teenage girls.
It was at a party, and I went to vape with them on the patio. Because I take my nicotine like children do.
“Duh — it’s the boys,” one said when I brought it up, as all the others agreed.
“The boys?” I asked.
My last book, What About Men?, had been all about how much boys struggle these days: their loneliness; their suicide rates. I’d spent the past year feeling very sympathetic towards boys.
“Yeah, well, who do you think they’re taking out their unhappiness on? It’s us,” another girl said.
“One boy at school used to draw a picture every day of how ugly I was,” a third girl said. “Every day for two years.”
“They’ve all got ‘Rate The Girls’ polls on their WhatsApps,” the first said. “They mark you down for weight gain, haircuts, what you say.”
“But then, if you’re hot, it’s just as bad, in a different way, because they’ll be talking about how they want to f*** you.”
The girls discussed coping techniques. Bad news: none of them worked.
“The only way you can stop them is if you become ‘one of the boys’ and hang out with them. But then,” the second girl said with a sigh, “all the other girls call you a slut. Because you’ve gone over to the boys’ side.”
“Surely it’s not all the boys?” I said. “There must be some nice boys?”
“Oh, yeah,” one girl said. “But they keep their heads down. Because… well, look.”
She showed me the Instagram account of her friend. Under every picture she posted of herself — smiling in a new dress; with her dog — dozens of anonymous accounts had replied with the most rank abuse.
“Fat.” “Slut.” “You gonna try and kill yourself again, for attention?”
“They’re all boys from her school,” she said. “And look, this one boy tried to defend her.”
I saw a series of messages from a brave teenage boy, posting things like, “You’re all big men, leaving these replies under anonymous accounts.”
As I could see, this boy immediately became a target too. Mainly accusations that he was “white knighting” this girl: “You wanna f*** her, bro?”
“So,” I asked, “you don’t think it’s social media pressure to be beautiful, or the economy, that’s making girls so sad?”
“Well, yeah, them too,” the first girl said. “But, Monday-Friday, 9-3, I’m not on social media. I’m not… in the economy. I’m just with these boys. And no one talks about how horrible they are.”
I thought about another recent report, showing a 30 per cent ideological gap between Gen Z men, who are increasingly conservative, and Gen Z women, who are increasingly progressive.
I thought about Andrew Tate, who has nine million mostly young male followers — and faces human trafficking charges, which he denies.
And I thought: maybe these girls are on to something. Maybe more people need to vape with teenage girls and ask them for the school gossip."

If you love Disney, its parks, its media, and its merch, listen up.
So I work for Disneyland, and we are talking about striking very soon. So soon, in fact, that we've been hosting rallies just outside of the parks. Yesterday was the 69th birthday of Disneyland Anaheim... it was also a monumental rally.
I haven't seen anyone on tumblr talking about the impending strikes against Disney. Not even going through the Disney tags or searching tumblr for "Disneyland Strike."
Let's talk about why we're striking:
Cost of living in the immediate SoCal region is nearly 2x as much as we are getting paid.
Cast members that have worked for the company for long periods of time are still paid as mucha s new hires.
Disney has showed up to union negotiations with insulting offers, including at 25 cent raise. Most cast members make $19.90
Disney rarely schedules you. In some areas and departments, you are fighting with your fellow cast members for hours. I have heard of cast members who are only scheduled for 1 4-hour shift per week. Many of those cast members have upwards of an hour commute to and from work.
Disney Admin has told attractions castmembers [so: rides, rollercoasters, and anything fun you get to do and see at the parks] that we are losing them money, which is why they refuse to schedule us and pay us. In the words of my partner, who also works at the parks, Disney without attractions is an over glorified mall and a food court. Disney needs us, and they know it, but they do not respect us.
Disney has an unfair attendance policy. It can be very difficult to get a needed day off, even when it has been requested weeks or months in advance. When you do take a day off [with-out accrued sick or vacation time] it counts against you. You can have 3 a month, 6 in 90 days, 9 in 180 days, or 12 in a year. How do you accrue sick/vacation? Hours worked, which can be impossible with the scheduling practices mentioned above. (Most cast members trade shifts among themselves to get around this.)
Cast members feel unsafe and unsupported in the parks. Many cast members have felt threatened by entitled guests upset that they are following policy. Disney Leads and Managers have to say yes to these guests and make things happen, though. [Which only makes this behavior worse and more dangerous for cast members who are only doing their job.]
Cast members also report feeling threatened, or even being literally threatened, by management in the parks. Especially cast members who have a second job. Especially cast members who know their rights.
Further, cast members work in hazardous conditions with pay that does not reflect that. Many cast members report losses of hearing, sore throats, and severe back and shoulder pain. Cast members are also exposed to infectious diseases at a much higher rate.

"School districts currently work with processing companies to offer cashless payment systems for families. But the companies can charge “processing fees” for each transaction. By law, students who are eligible for reduced price meals cannot be charged more than 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch. With processing fees, however, families can end up paying 10 times that amount. Processing companies charge as much as $3.25 or 4% to 5% per transaction, according to a recent report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau."

"I just told her I didn't respect her as a competitor," said Navarro on the pair's heated exchange at the net.
"I think she goes about things in a pretty cut-throat way. It makes for a locker room that doesn't have a lot of camaraderie, so it's tough to face an opponent like that, who I really don't respect.
"But, kudos to her, she played some good tennis there at the end. She played better than me, so congrats to her."
Zheng, roared on by Chinese fans who packed out Court Seven, braving temperatures which soared to the mid-30s, said Navarro was a "great opponent".
"She told me she doesn't know how I have a lot of fans," said Zheng, who enjoyed a breakout run at the Australian Open in January when she made the final.
"It looks like she's not happy with my behaviour towards her. If she's not happy about my behaviour, she can come and tell me. I would like to correct it to become a better player and a better person."
The 21-year-old added: "I'm glad that she told me that. I will not consider it an attack because she lost the match."
Zheng Qinwen (郑钦文) becomes the first Chinese tennis player in history to win an Olympic gold medal in singles after defeating Donna Vekić in two straight sets (6–2, 6–3) on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Stade Roland Garros, 3rd August, 2024. This ends China's twenty-year wait for an Olympic gold medal in tennis since the women's doubles victory in 2004.
#from a few days ago. and now zheng is the olympic gold medallist and navarro remains the whiny daughter of a rapacious billionaire#also i hundred per cent guarantee that when a westerner calls a poc cutthroat they would call a westerner displaying those same qualities#a great competitor/leader etc.#anyway. living for the chinese athletes who are facing sinophobia/disrespect/allegations of doping getting their gold medals <3

there are some rsc productions i've watched that i had mixed feelings about but others that hit them right out of the park and i've noticed it has little to do with how much i like the play itself (in the tempest 2017 dir. gregory doran i found that to be a hindrance to my enjoyment, liking the version in my head when i read it much more) (whereas with antony and cleopatra 2017 dir. iqbal khan i think it's just about a perfect realization about what i enjoy the play in so much and josette simon's performance is one of my favorite things i've ever seen on stage). but i've been watching two gentleman of verona 2014 dir. simon godwin/robin lough and it's just so fucking funny. the play itself is, well no one argues it's shakespeare's strongest and it has some obvious flaws in the ending (if you've read it you know what i mean by that) but i do think its premise is still wildly entertaining and interesting, there's some good jokes and beautiful poetry, it's just overall not the strongest character-driven comedy. this production though might just be the best possible version of the play. the song they give turio to sing to silvia is so good and then the performance is so hammy and camp in a way i didn't expect it to be. the original music is amazing and i think the modernized clothing and set pieces are really well done. like bravo
#tales from diana#text post#when i don't like something about an rsc production it tends to get in the way of my enjoyment a LOT#and the hardest thing about any shakespeare play is sitting through the beginning and analyzing whether i like what i think they're doing#like i'm always very critical of opening scenes cuz i'm afraid the acting won't please me#i thought from the early line delivery that i wasn't liking valentine and proteus' actors but that's actually not the case#i just had to get used to it#shakespearean dialogue is very unnatural and forced by necessity (bc that's not at all how we speak in real life)#there's always some buffering time to get in the flow of it#the two gentlemen of verona#shakespeare#royal shakespeare company#also i'm watching it on marquee tv (a streaming service i just found out about that hosts performing arts content#like plays and opera and ballet and the like. im really excited)#i got to join with the first threemonths for 99 cents each. like that's awesome#i'm not sure i'll keep it forever but 3 bucks for three months is worth keeping in that time#but it's only 10 bucks per month afterward which i'm also not too mad about if i do keep it...#bc i like the content that's on there and i'm happy to support the kind of platform it seems to promote#if u're interested in the platform u can view the catalogue online wo an account and claim the same autumn discount that i did#not sponsored. obviously#just sharing that info bc it's a good deal#it's available in the us and uk idk about other countries

The Best News of Last Week
1. ‘We are just getting started’: the plastic-eating bacteria that could change the world
In 2016, Japanese scientists Oda and Hiraga published their discovery of Ideonella sakaiensis, a bacterium capable of breaking down PET plastic into basic nutrients. This finding marked a shift in microbiology's perception, recognizing the potential of microbes to solve pressing environmental issues.
France's Carbios has successfully applied bacterial enzyme technology to recycle PET plastic waste into new plastic products, aligning with the French government's goal of fully recycling plastic packaging by 2025.
2. HIV cases in Amsterdam drop to almost zero after PrEP scheme
According to Dutch AIDS Fund, there were only nine new cases of the virus in Amsterdam in 2022, down from 66 people diagnosed in 2021. The organisation claimed that 128 people were diagnosed with HIV in Amsterdam in 2019, and since 2010, the number of new infections in the Dutch capital has fallen by 95 per cent.
3. Cheap and drinkable water from desalination is finally a reality
In a groundbreaking endeavor, engineers from MIT and China have designed a passive solar desalination system aimed at converting seawater into drinkable water.
The concept, articulated in a study published in the journal Joule, harnesses the dual powers of the sun and the inherent properties of seawater, emulating the ocean’s “thermohaline” circulation on a smaller scale, to evaporate water and leave salt behind.
4. World’s 1st drug to regrow teeth enters clinical trials
The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner. A team of scientists, led by a Japanese pharmaceutical startup, are getting set to start human trials on a new drug that has successfully grown new teeth in animal test subjects.
Toregem Biopharma is slated to begin clinical trials in July of next year after it succeeded growing new teeth in mice five years ago, the Japan Times reports.
5. After Decades of Pressure, US Drugmaker J&J Gives Up Patent on Life-Saving TB Drug
In what can be termed a huge development for drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) patients across large parts of the world, bedaquiline maker Johnson and Johnson said on September 30 (Saturday) that it would drop its patent over the drug in 134 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
6. Stranded dolphins rescued from shallow river in Massachusetts

7. ‘Staggering’ green growth gives hope for 1.5C, says global energy chief
The prospects of the world staying within the 1.5C limit on global heating have brightened owing to the “staggering” growth of renewable energy and green investment in the past two years, the chief of the world’s energy watchdog has said.
Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, and the world’s foremost energy economist, said much more needed to be done but that the rapid uptake of solar power and electric vehicles were encouraging.
