syndrome from incredibles, Thanos in the comics, mad hatter from Batman, tighten from Megamind, frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame, Red Hulk, parasite from superman and Ozai all of these villains are pathetic but they work for some reason I cannot place. A lot of stories try and write villains that are pathetic but also scary and it doesn't work- I love Starscream he can be an amazing character (he can be sympathetic or a straight up monster he can be lame but still threatening etc) and I like most versions but God can writers screw him up and he can fall flat (i love tfp i swear but god i hate their starscream! He just didn't work for me! Megatron and knockout are cool tho) Belos for some reason doesn't work for me at all- I know he should be scary while the fandom is wrong about him being a colonizer/cult leader/a dictator (he's not stop using words you dont understand the meaning of)and how insane it is that he's in a kids show (watch more cartoons there's villains darker than him) he's still trying to commit genocide and he's abusive and he's at his core got very little depth or complexity- he's really just an isekai character gone wrong- a pathetic guy with a hero complex and emotional baggage who becomes a villain- but he just didn't work for me. Neither does Jacob Hopkins- he's just Ronaldo from SU if he was written to be a straight up hate sink. I'm a lesbian latina with autism and was raised with a different sect of christan beliefs from him- I know historically this guy would have murdered me and i know he should work but something about him didn't stick the landing! The main thing I think about with belos isn't 'wow this guy is a great villain' it's 'can y'all stop being weirdly ableist toward this old man' or 'why do so many of y'all wanna fuck this man he's ugly' and dont get me started on mcu villains - their version of the mandarin, she-hulk's dumb men rights activists on reddit (seriously that's the scariest villain you can come up with? Like revenge porn is evil but really? I don't like the term man-baby- I have personal issues with how the term has been used in ableist ways- but yeah erm man babies on reddit are the best you can do for a villain? That's freaking stupid) and OMG Sutur in Ragnarok was terrible etc etc- these villains all suck!

How do you write villains that are pathetic but still work? How do write villains who are at their core whiny insecure losers but still work as detestable threatening villains? Like marvel made a character whose whole thing was that he's an incel work but so many other stories fail to write that stuff. Part of me thinks it's because these stories are desperate to make their villain into a hate sink joke but still make them scary and it fails but Tighten and Red Hulk are right there and there's no way the writers weren't purposely writing hate sinks with them! And they work! Why doesn't belos?

no one ever, probably: I sure hope that they make the monster/mystery of the week part into a tiny sliver of the runtime and start revolving the entire thing around long, complicated, extremely emotionally draining plot arcs that ultimately end up with none of the characters evolving or growing at all because they still have to have the status quo be maintained at the end of each story beat!!!!!

How do y’all deal with a neighbor that hates your dog? I’ve lived in a double for a few years and one of the newest people that moved in hates Honey with a passion. Honey barked once in the backyard this morning around six when someone she’s never met went into a neighboring backyard to smoke a cigarette. I brought her in as soon as she started barking but this new neighbor texted me vitriol about how she can never sleep because Honey barks occasionally and that I shouldn’t use our shared backyard (the reason I moved to this place). I’ve never had a single neighbor complain about her before and the most she barks is like three separate barks throughout the night but l can almost always get her back in and quiet before she barks twice in a row. Leia can’t sleep through the night without going out but this neighbor expects them not to go out at all between 10pm and 10am.

1327 – Day 1

As it turns out, very little changes for the Townsends in the coming weeks – even as proclamations are issued that King Edward II has been deposed, that his son has been crowned as King Edward III, and that Dowager Queen Isabella has become his regent. And yet, the peasants of the realm still have to till their fields and care for their livestock and crops as they have always done.

They do just that. The spring storms last for a little while longer, but eventually run their course. Luckily for them, their crops haven’t suffered too badly. What is a relief is to be able to freely go outside again.

One day, Benjamin tells Malika that he will need to go to Praaven for a day or two, but that he will return as swiftly as he can. It instantly makes her suspicious.

“Why?” she asks. “Has something happened?”

“I intend to meet with George Crawley about applying to the Guild of Nectar Makers. I spent the winter thinking about your idea, and I believe it has merit. It will be an outlay, but hopefully one that will make itself paid for.”

She blinks at him, stunned. She has been prepared to fight for this, but not for him to simply surrender. “Are you sure? I can’t believe you suddenly changed your mind. You seemed so adamant before.”

That makes him chuckle. “I would have expected you to be happy, dearest wife, not to question me further.”

“I am happy. But you know who you married.”

“I do. But I didn’t suddenly decide. As you would know had you listened to me.”

Months ago, he might have said it with bitter annoyance, but now, he only sounds amused, obviously satisfied to have stunned her so completely. She can’t help the suspicion that he is enjoying this a little too much. But she is also too happy to care.

“Well”, she says after a moment, her old smirk returning. “I’m glad you’ve finally seen reason, in any case. What are your plans, oh wise husband of mine?”

His plan, which they put into action in the coming weeks, is to first seek admittance into the Guild of Nectar Makers, or at the very least their agreement to the Townsends’ sale of nectar. Gaining this assent requires a hefty fee, but rather that than investing money in this venture only to then be met with nothing but obstacles.

That accomplished, they turn to the tools of the trade. They will need a vat, for whose protection they, with the help of some neighbours and hired hands, add to the second cottage, and after that, they dig a small cellar to store the nectar vessels they will fill. It is extravagant, but they have heard that being stored below the earth makes nectar age better. Benedict aids them by crafting racks for this. They only have two for now, but plan to soon add more.

Doing all of this takes them the entire quarter, but by the end of it, they are well satisfied, and excited to start the actual nectar-making process. Benjamin has already gathered some knowledge about it, and the rest they will simply need to acquire over time.

It’s a gamble, to be sure. Aside from the fruits they will ferment and make into nectar, they also intend to try their hand at mead-making, using the honey they harvested from their beehives and then stored for later sale. At times, they are amazed by their own ambition. They are prosperous, as far as farmers go, but all of them know that they are one bad harvest away from being in dire straits again. Most peasants are either in no position to look beyond their fields or don’t dare to. Neither of them can be certain that they aren’t foolish to even try.

But they have started on this path now. And may the Watcher guard them on it.

It is a good thing that they have hurried in their construction of both cellar and additional room, for at the end of the quarter, temperatures plummet once more, as they sometimes do in spring. The frozen earth would make it nearly impossible to dig, or for them to apply the daub needed for the walls.

As it is, beside nectar making, their main worry now is to replenish their strained finances before the next land tax is called for at the end of the decade. A delay in payment could lead to imprisonment or worse, and although the earl is known to be lenient, that is not a risk any of them want to take.
