"DID is not a trauma disorder"
We hear this a lot when looking at the DSM. How DID/OSDD are spoke of as disorders formed out of trauma however within the DSM 5-TR they do not fall under "trauma disorders". i think something that may go unmentioned here is how the DSM 5-TR was restructured to best mimic a clinical sense of how these disorder clusters interact with each other.
With assistance from text directly from the DSM 5 TR of how the manual was restructured to flow through related disorders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On to Trauma Disorders and DID
Page 298 you will find the beginning of Trauma and Stress Related disorder. including: Reactive Attachment Disorder, Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorders, Prolonged Grief Disorder, and Other Specified Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorder.
Immediately followed on page 330, is Dissociative Disorders. if you are here reading this, I do not need to lay those all out to you.
Following Dissociative Disorders is Somatic Symptom and Related Disorder
Tumblr media
Many CDD are accompanied by somatic symptoms.
With only a modicum of literacy should you be able to understand why DID/OSDD are placed between Trauma Disorders and Somatic Disorders. It may not be a thing explicitly stated, due to diagnostic criteria relying on current presentation of symptoms , though through even a quick view of studies you will find DID referred to as a disorder developed out of early childhood trauma.

Now that I’ve read the entirety of TGCF, here is the result of my grand research on:
“The number of times that Xie Lian did not know whether to laugh or cry”
Volume 1
Pages 79, 107, 235, 330, and 367 - 5 times
Volume 2
Pages 28, 80 (81), 206, 256, and 339 - 5/6 times
Volume 3
Pages 321, 330, and 363 - 3 times
Volume 4
pages 212, 290, 298, 311, 317, 338, and 368 - 7 times
Volume 5
Pages 27, 121, 177, 246, and 300 - 5 times
Volume 6
Pages 22, 40, 80, and 119 - 4 times
Volume 7
Pages 33, 81, 124, 134, 151, 164, 171 and 196 - 8 times
Volume 8
Pages 176, 213, 266, 285, 305 and 322 - 6 times
Which makes it a whopping average of 5 times with the Median being 5~5.5, Mode being 5/6 (depending on whether it was 5 or 6 times in volume 2), and the range of 5.
I could be missing a couple more of the instances so if I find anymore at any point in time during my re-read, I’ll come back and add it up and recalculate everything.

Note
Really was not expecting so much controversy over Fern's weight, so I'll leave this comment up here indefinitely;
Fern is bigger looking than I am. I have skinny arms and legs and a skinny neck but just kind of a gut, and I still weigh almost what she does. She's thicker than me so I made her weigh more. Just seemed logical.
A whole lot of people have said they weigh about what she does, too, and also hover around her size and proportions.
It's obvious that some people truly have no idea what that much weight actually looks like on a person. Nobody likes to feel as though they're susceptible to media programming, but that's probably exactly the culprit here. Virtually ALL media exaggerates what fat looks like on someone.
Homer Simpson is also canonically 239, and Simpsons is constantly on about how HUGE AND FAT he is, but in real life he'd probably be at least 270 or more given his height and thickness. Peter Griffin (sorry for invoking any Family Guy here but it's convenient at the moment) is canonically 298 but would probably be 310 to 330 in reality, and that's a conservative estimate.
Not even going to start with the absurd underestimation of anime character weights.
All in all, mass media absurdly underestimates what everyone "should" weigh for how they look. Fern's weight is as realistic for her size and shape as I could get, and harping on it as "morbidly obese" is really dickish to all the people here who are also around her size and weight. I guarantee you they are fine, maybe even very active with very healthy eating habits. Others might not be, but that's because, surprise, every person has unique metabolism and health requirements
I been wanting to find and share this great commentary from Bogleech webcomic "Awful Hospital" from a time when commenters were being dicks about the protagonist's canonical weight.
People are so used to just mocking fat people out of hand or else dismissing the fat people they know as "not REALLY fat" that they've created this sort of blind spot in their brain where they interact with fat people every day but internalize none of it.

my spreadsheet (public version)
so i have this spreadsheet that i use for prompts for this fandom, comprised of several prompt lists and the exact order of which is not easily publicly available. if you want to send me a prompt, send me a ship and a number between 1-725 (subject to change) and receive a sort of mystery box surprise of a fic. through the use of this list, you can see what prompts have already been done. if it’s for another ship, you can certainly send me the same prompt that was already used in another fic. if a prompt has been used three times, that prompt will be closed. thank you for your cooperation <3 listing under the cut!
possible progress statuses: prompted, in progress, editing, posted. if a prompt does not have one of these statuses, it has not been sent in thus far.

awhile back i posted a couple scans of art from the deluxe editions of the Dragon Age novels, but i actually scanned all the illustrations from all 5 books (Asunder, The Calling, The Last Flight, The Masked Empire, and The Stolen Throne) but never shared them. finally getting around to doing that!
anyways, here’s a link to a zip file all 120 of illustrations :)
they’re not cropped or cleaned up or anything, but i hope at least someone enjoys nonetheless. if you like them, please consider picking up a copy of the books themselves. i’ve transcribed the credits of which artist did each illustration under the cut.

Samnite Bronze Helmet and Neckguard, C. 450 BC
This imposing helmet is a unique hybrid of the Samnite-Chalcidian type.
The Samnites were an Italic people living in Samnium (see Wikipedia article map, below) in south-central Italy who fought several wars with the Roman Republic. They formed a confederation, consisting of four tribes: the Hirpini, Caudini, Caraceni, and Pentri. They were allied with Rome against the Gauls in 354 BC, but later became enemies of the Romans and were soon involved in a series of three wars (343–341, 327–304, and 298–290 BC) against the Romans. Despite a spectacular victory over the Romans at the Battle of the Caudine Forks (321 BC), the Samnites were eventually subjugated.
What was known as a ‘Samnite Gladiator’ appeared in Rome shortly after the defeat of Samnium in the 4th century BC, apparently adopted from the victory celebrations of Rome’s allies in Campania. By arming low-status gladiators in the manner of a defeated foe, Romans mocked the Samnites and appropriated martial elements of their culture.

Note
Is it viable to read only a handful of Venom's best comics instead of the entire history of the character? If so, what are the must read issues/volumes for someone new to his comics?
i would say generally yes, you can get by reading only the essentials, since a good chunk of their appearances are one-offs that are moderately to completely inconsequential to the main “core” of venom. most people will not read the Entire History of the Character Including All Minor Appearances. i'm just a weirdo
as for a list of comics, i have to give this disclaimer: be aware that i haven't read any comics past like, 2013, so i know a few runs in the late 2010s were good and essential, but i haven't read them yet so i cannot in good conscience add them to my list just yet
now that that's out of the way, here's my list
Handy info to know:
This is a list of the most utterly essential comic issues and runs in terms of either character development or plot development. I can make a longer list of my general recommendations that also includes some comics I think are good and worth reading, but aren't essential if you choose to skip them, just shoot me another ask and I can compile it there
If you want my list of Literally Every Single Venom Appearance that I've consumed so far, here's my Venom Megadoc (sorted only by story-chronological order, has no special emphasis on importance, starts falling apart and getting messy towards the late 90s/early 00s though). The vast majority of issues listed are for 616 but I also have a section at the end for non-616 universes, including movie appearances, and hopefully some time in the future I will also include TV show appearances there.
For reading comics online, my main two websites are readcomicsfree.net and readcomiconline.li. Use an adblocker for both. Some comics may not load properly on readcomicsfree (I have this issue mainly with ASM) so you may need to switch between websites when reading.
* Title is a crossover event containing multiple titles but is typically available online under this single title.

Venom (2011): #6
Amazing Spider-Man (1963): #668-669
Venom (2011): #7

Venom (2011): #8
Amazing Spider-Man (1963): #672-673
Back to normal:
Venom (2011): #9-25
and I'll be real that's the furthest I've read so far lel. I personally really emphasize the essential reading as everything prior to the "shit starts getting weird" marker but I included the essential plot points after that too just to be well-rounded in general
