First ever sketch of Astrir Cango They/It and favorite drawing of them ngl they are a bog witch who receives visions of important events as they are happening meaning if it wants to do something about it they must figure out whatever is happening or about to happen fast. Once they figure it out, it usually contacts their moirail for assistance as she owns a motorcycle and is further within city limits than it is. Gender angry /hj they tire of being ask what it's gender is whenever they are sharing with someone a vision because it is never important enough to interrupt what it was saying.

numb - Jegulus Microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - word count: 288 - CW: single dad! James for unmentioned reasons but it's implied that it's something sad.
"I don't know where I'm supposed to put this, Pads," James mumbled as he stared over to the couch where Regulus and Harry lay, Harry snoring lightly in a sleeping Regulus's arms.
"What do you mean?" Sirius asked, looking up from the parchment he'd been scribbling on, his eyes wide with curiosity
"I...I didn't think I was ready...for anyone else. I thought nobody would ever be good enough for Harry, or make me feel the way I..." James trailed off, tears in his eyes. "I didn't think I could ever be happy again."
A sad smile formed on Sirius's face, and he grabbed his bed friend's hand. "I know, mate. The last two years have been rough."
"But then your stupid kid brother, who is very much no longer a kid, comes to visit! And he's finally got Harry napping! And mate, he sat on the floor for hours yesterday until his legs went fucking numb playing trains with him, and..." James swallowed, "and he makes me want to talk about things. And smile about things. And laugh about things. And I don't know where to put that."
Sirius's eyes, wide with genuine sympathy and gentle compassion, made James want to break down. "You're scared?"
"Terrified," James choked out, tears streaming down his face. "Partially because he's a bit scary, and partially because I'm definitely falling in love with him."
But Sirius just smiled again. "James, I've known Reg for his entire life. And he doesn't just cook and babysit and change nappies for everyone. He cares about you. Both of you. Let yourself be happy. Please?"
Trembling, something in his chest breaking a bit, James nodded. "I'll try. I think with him, I really could be again."

The Wayne boys most days without sleep before they finally crashed (two manage to beat out Batman)
Tim Drake - 12 days
Tim fidgeted with his hands, his gaze fixed on the wall.
Tim: All around the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel, da da da daā
Suddenly, an alarm blared on his phone startling everyone at the cafe table he was sitting at.
Tim: POP GOES THE WEASEL!
He erupted into cackling laughter, but as he slowly laid his head on the table, the laughter quickly faded away. Cassie, Kon, and Bernard exchanged worried glances.
Cassie: Hey, Tim, how long have you been awake?
Tim (rocking back and forth): 288 hours.
Cassie (stunned): 200 and what?
Kon (shocked): You've been awake for 12 days?!
Bernard (sighing): Again, Tim?
Cassie & Kon: Again?!
Bernard: I've seen this happen with him so many times. At this point, his brain starts to cry.
Cassie: Donāt you mean die?
Tim sobbed for a few moments, his eyes fixed on his phone, before falling completely silent.
Bernard: Nah, I mean crying.
Tim: You've seen me do it before, and I can do it longer. The first record holder lasted 12 days! I can go even longerālike a full month! I can! Batman couldn't even do that!
Tim cackled rocking back and forth.
Tim: Coffee helps especially when you replace it with all other liquids.
Tim grabbed a large cup of coffee, his hands trembling uncontrollably. He took a few big gulps as Cassie looked on in shock, while Konnor blinked and then shrugged, taking a few sips from his tea. Bernard gently rubbed his boyfriendās back.
Cassie: Dude, why are you even avoiding sleep?
Bernard (explaining for his boyfriend): The double life, regular paperwork and then hero work. Timmy, let's take you home okay?
Tim: Home, no home. I fall sleep. Sleep for the weak... Did you know if you look at the walls long enough, new people appear?
Tim waved, laughing nervously then tensed horrified.
Tim: Their faces are contorting again!
Bernard: Let's take you away from the scary... invisible person and get you home to not rest.
Bernard took Tim's hand and led him outside of the Dunkin' Donuts.
Cassie: I could not handle dating a batkid.
Konnor nodded.
Kon: I dated him for a while. Would not recommend.

Dick Grayson - 18 days and 15 minutes
Kori and Beast Boy walked into the Titans' living room. Raven was the only one there, deep in her daily meditation.
Kori: Where's Dick at?
Raven: Outside counting blades of grass.
Kori (confused): Counting blades of grass?
Beast Boy (frustrated): Oh Jesus, has he been awake for days again?
Raven nodded, her eyes still closed.
Raven (monotone): He'll crash any second, but he thought being outside in the sun would 'revitalize' him.
Beast Boy: That's not- I'll be back.
Beast Boy went outside where Dick was, indeed, counting blades of grass. BB approached him, tapping his foot. Dick looked up, his eyes wide and one twitching.
Dick: Hey- Hey- Hey buddy. Did you know we have one hundred thousand blades of grass? I- Did you change colors?
BB: What color do you think I am?
Dick squinted his eyes.
Dick: Blue.
BB: All right, we're on that color. How long have you been awake, buddy?
Dick: I stopped sleeping last Wednesday... Then a week passed... Then another, that was 14, now it's Saturday of the second week. And- I hear the world singing.
Dick lay on the ground, counting the same patch of grass as he whispered incoherent nonsense. Beast Boy crossed his arms, sighed, and walked back inside the tower.
BB: 18 days this time.
Beast Boy walked away as Kori covered her mouth in shock.
Raven: He's surpassing the world record holder. Also, his brain might be dying.
Kori (alarmed): Might be?!
Raven: He's a batkid, their brains are made of steel or something.
Kori: I have one trick that usually knocks him outā
Raven: I know it's sex.
Kori (giggling): Yes, but he falls asleep on top of me every time.
Raven sighed, shaking her head while Beast Boy left the house with a water bottle.
Beast Boy: Right, I'm going to give him this sleep juice Alfred sent us. He says it knocks them out in a few seconds.
Raven: Smart choice.
Beast Boy: Thanks.

Jason Todd - 5 days
Jason: I can't sleep.
Roy: How long have you been awake?
Jason (groggy): About five days. Man, I tried to go to sleep, but my body physically won't let me.
Roy: Well, you have been drinking Red Bulls every other hour. You're too focused on the mission. Just go to sleep.
Jason shook his head, rocking back and forth.
Jason: Can't sleepā¦ Won't sleepā¦ No sleep.
Roy tapped his foot, thinking of a way to get him to sleep, then smiled.
Roy: You know you're becoming just like your dad. That's good; he can go six days without sleep. Maybe you'llā
Jason stood up, went to another room, closed his door, and fell into his bed to sleep.
Roy: Works every time.
----------------------------------------------------
Damian - 1 day
Damian: I don't want to go to sleep! No!
Damian kicked his feet as Bruce dragged him to bed.
Bruce: Nope, youāve stayed awake for 24 hours. That's it. Go to bed!
Damian: You're so unfair!
Bruce: You're not depriving yourself of valuable sleepāAlfred, shut up!
Alfred, who was reading a book about sleep disorders, smirked and then walked away.

The Battle of Manhattan didnāt go the way the Fandom thinks it did; we need to address the āmassacreā of the Titan Army!
The Battle of Manhattan is the most pivotal event of the first series. And we see the entire thing exclusively from Percyās point of view. He takes us through the thickest of the fight from one end of Manhattan Island to the next, and shows us a desperate fight of good against evil.
But we have another point of view for the battle, one that comes from the demigods of the Titan army, and one that informs us of a far different, darker side to the conflict. One where an entire army of children is massacred by the victorious Olympians, without a thought or even a care. Itās a shocking, confronting side of the struggle that most fans donāt seem to be aware of.Ā
But itās also completely inaccurate.Ā
Now I love Alabaster; heās one of my favorite characters, and I want nothing but the best for him. But heās a demonstrably unreliable narrator. I donāt even mean that heās intentionally dishonest; but heās very badly misinformed about what actually happened. And that gives the fandom three major misconceptions that need to be cleared up.Ā
Alabaster gets the casualty ratio for the battle wrong (the Olympians had more than he thinks).
The Titan army has far fewer demigods than most fans think (not much more than 50 at the most).
Alabaster does say that there was a āmassacreā at the end of the battle, but most of the TA demigods had deserted before that!
Part 1) The Olympians Have High Casualties
āIt was a massacre. If I remember right, my mother told me that Camp Half-Blood and its allies had sixteen casualties total. We had hundreds.ā (pg 219)
This is the only time we get a specific number for Olympian casualties, but it just doesnāt match up with what actually happens in the books. Looking back at all the deaths we do see:
Charlie Beckendorf -1
one [Hellhound] got hold of an Apollo camper and dragged him away. I didnāt see what happened to him next. I didnāt want to know. (pg 182) -1
Michael Yew -1
A young dragon had appeared in Harlem, and a dozen wood nymphs died before the monster was finally defeated. (pg 203) -12
āWe lost twenty satyrs against some giants at Fort Washington,ā [Grover] said, his voice trembling. (pg 203) -20 Giants smashed through trees, and naiads faded as their life sources were destroyed. (pg 243) -1< Enemy archers returned fire, and a Hunter fell from a high branch. (pg 244) -1Ā Too many of our friends lay wounded in the streets. Too many were missing. (pg 257) -1< The flagpoles were hung with horrible trophies āhelmets and armor pieces from defeated campers. (pg 282) -1< The Drakon lashed out, swallowing three californian centaurs in one gulp before I could even get close. (pg 288) -3 Poison spewed everywhere, melting centaurs into dust along with quite a few monsters, (pg 288) -1< The Drakon snapped up one Ares camper in a gulp. (pg 291) -1
Silena Beauregard -1
Leneus -1
a body covered in the golden burial shroud of Apolloās cabin. I didnāt know who was underneath. I don't want to find out. (pg 303) -1
Oddly enough, we actually miss the moment that was probably the worst for the Olympians, the final push by Kronos that breaks through their line. After Clarisse slays the drakon and the monsters are driven back again, Percy and co. take the opportunity to go up to Olympus. Percy gives Pandoraās Pithos to Hestia, and then contacts Poseidon via his throne. Itās just as he finishes that Thalia comes up and tells them that Kronos is coming again, but they miss the fighting.
By the time we got to the street, it was too late. Campers and Hunters lay wounded on the ground. Clarisse must have lost a fight with a Hyperborean giant, because she and her chariot were frozen in a block of ice. The centaurs were nowhere to be seen. Either theyād panicked and ran, or theyād been disintegrated. (pg 312) -<500
And finally, Kronos does kill some people on Olympus itself.
A few minor gods and nature spirits had tried to stop Kronos. What remained of them was strewn about the road: shattered armor, ripped clothing, swords and spears broken in half. (pg 322) -1<
The specific deaths we have mentioned during the battle amount to 48 at the very least; and that is an extremely conservative estimate that only includes the deaths Percy has the time and presence of mind to witness in all the carnage. Considering how many others must have happened, factoring the sudden disappearance of the 500 centaurs in particular, it was likely in the hundreds. And most of the centaurs probably ran at the end, but even that would have involved heavy casualties.
Itās true that actual demigods were a smaller fraction of Olympian forces, and so would have made up just a fraction of losses. The number 16 might actually make sense if it were just the number of campers lost, but thatās not what Hecate said, she said total.
It might be significant that Hecate is the actual source of this misinformation. Would she have reason to lie to her own son, or might she herself be out of the loop. Right now, we just canāt know.Ā
And she might be underestimating Titan Army losses too. Considering how many times a wave of several hundred monsters tear into Manhattan, and get thrown back by the Olympians only to return later with no discernable drop in numbers, until the army is finally routed entirely, it wouldnāt surprise me if the TA actually took a thousand or more casualties. But those would be overwhelmingly monsters, because:
Part 2) Less Than Fifty Demigods Were Even In The Titan Army
To prove that there could not possibly have been hundreds of TA demigods killed at Manhattan, we need look no farther than Alabaster's own account.
āThere was a war between the gods and titans last summer and most half-bloodsādemigods like meāfought for the Olympians.ā (pg 218)
So the TA could not have had more demigods than the Olympians; and they had about a hundred. There are forty campers to start with, who are quickly joined by the Hunters, who now have thirty members. Then, in the last hours of the fight, they are finally joined by the Ares cabin, which brings another thirty (jeez Ares, you animal!). So Olympus has an even hundred demigods. (The Hunters arenāt necessarily all demigods by birth, but I donāt think Alabaster would make a distinction based on that.)
So the TA has less than a hundred demigods, significantly less. I would argue they probably had no more than fifty because that lines up with the only solid numbers we ever get for them. And every time the TA is described, demigods are a clear minority. First, look at the foes Percy encounters when he infiltrates the Princess Andromeda:
I saw monsters patrolling the upper decks of the shipādracaenae snake-women, hellhounds, giants, and the humanoid seal-demons known as telkhines . . . . . āI donāt care what your nose says!ā snarled a half-human half-dog voiceāa telkhine. āThe last time you smelled half-blood, it turned out to be a meatloaf sandwich!ā āMeatloaf sandwiches are good!ā a second voice snarled . . . . . a telkhine was hunched over a console . . . . . a half dozen telkhines were tromping down the stairs . . . . . past another telkhine . . . . . And in the fountain squatted a giant crab . . . . . a couple of dracaenae slithered across my path . . . . . As I was running up the stairwell, a kid charged down . . . . . Laistrygonian giants filed in on either side of the swimming pool . . . . . demigod archers appeared on the roof . . . . . two hellhounds leapt down . . . . . The crowed of monsters parted . . . . . Giants jeered. Dracaenae hissed with laughter . . . . . throwing monsters off their feet . . . . .I knew him, of course: Ethan Nakamura . . . . . two giants lumbered forward . . . . . Panicked monsters surged backward . . . . . one of the dracaenae hissed . . . . . I pushed through a crowd of monsters . . . . . Monsters yelled at me fromĀ above.
That was a quick summary of all the enemies Percy and Charlie encounter on the Princess Andromeda, Iām not crazy enough to try and write the whole chapter. But itās pretty clear there are only a few demigods amid dozens of monsters. We hear the same thing from Poseidon later, that āthere were only a few demigod warriors aboard that shipā; we might question whether or not Poseidon is a trustworthy source, but the evidence does back him up.
When we finally get to the battle, the disparity of demigod numbers in the TA is again evident:
The bronze image showed Long Island Sound near La Guardia. A fleet of a dozen speed boats raced through the dark water toward Manhattan. Each boat was packed with demigods in full Greek armor. At the back of the lead boat, a purple banner emblazoned with a black scythe flapped in the night wind. Iād never seen that design before, but it wasnāt hard to figure out: the battle flag of Kronos. āScan the perimeter of the island,ā I said. āQuick.ā Annabeth shifted the scene south to the harbor. A Staten Island Ferry was plowing through the waves near Ellis Island. The deck was crowded with dracaenae and a whole pack of hellhounds. Swimming in front of the ship was a pod of marine mammals. At first I thought they were dolphins. Then I saw their doglike faces and swords strapped to their waists, and I realized they were telkhinesāsea demons. The scene shifted again: the Jersey shore, right at the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel. A hundred assorted monsters were marching past the lanes of stopped traffic: giants with clubs, rogue Cyclopes, a few fire-spitting dragons, and just to rub it in, a World War II-era Sherman tank, pushing cars out of the way as it rumbled into the tunnel. (pg 167)
Here we see the first wave of the Titan Army as a three pronged attack (which Percy says on the next page collectively numbered at least 300) and only one of the units has demigods. Itās the one that Kronos leads, so itās probably meant to be a more elite unit, at least at first.Ā
We donāt know for sure how many there are. Speedboats are usually made to carry 4-6 people so a dozen would be possible 48 to 72. Considering Alabaster says there were significantly less demigods in the TA than the Olympians, I would guess itās on the lower end; and that does match another number we see in a moment.
This fleet never reaches Manhattan, since Percy bribes the East River to swamp their boats. Those who say many TA demigods were killed in the battle might point to this as Percy causing a bunch of kids to drown; but Alabaster never mentions a mass drowning in his narrative of the battle, and he would have been on one of those boats, so itās safe to say they just went for a swim.
(And Kronos was with them, which means that a very angry titan lord was suddenly pitched into the river and had to swim with the rest of them. Thatās not really relevant, I just want everyone to know that.)
Percy is then immediately told that āAnother army is marching over the Williamsburg bridge.ā This fourth prong of the attack, led by the Minotaur, also has no demigods in it.
An entire phalanx of dracaenae marched in the lead . . . About a hundred more monsters marched behind them. (pg 182) More monsters surged forward āsnakes and giants and telkinesābut the Minotaur roared at them, and they backed off. (pg 186)
But more monsters keep advancing because by the time Percy kills the minotaur and the demigods charge and rout the whole group, it had grown to 200
Finally, the monsters turned and fledāabout twenty left alive out of two hundred. (pg 188)
So the grand total for the first TA attack was 500 soldiers or more, with only 40-70 of them demigods. And after the monsters on the Williamsburg bridge retreat, those demigods show back up.
Then I saw the crowd at the base of the bridge. The retreating monsters were running straight toward their reinforcements. It was a small group, maybe thirty or forty demigods in battle armor, mounted on skeletal horses. One of them held a purple banner with the black scythe design.Ā The lead horseman trotted forward. He took off his helm, and I recognized Kronos himself, his eyes like molten gold. (pg1 188)
This is the only time we get anywhere close to a specific number when TA demigods are concerned. It would have been the same group that was sunk in the East River, who then had to swim for Brooklynn; which is where they are now trying to take the Williamsburg bridge. This reinforces the idea that the number of demigods in the boats was only a little more than forty, since they would not have suffered more than a few injuries in the sinkings.
Iām going to come back to this moment later to demonstrate how Percy refrains from killing other demigods, even in his Achilles state, but the other important thing to note is that this is the last time Kronos organizes his demigods into a unit that he leads personally. After they fail to break through here, Kronos just has them take on a secondary role, and puts his faith in bigger and bigger monsters to lead the charge instead.
The Titan Army units on Long Island then spend the evening marching the long way around Manhattan (for some reason) because they make camp for the night in New Jersey, at Medusaās old lair. Percy again describes demigods as the small minority.
Hundreds of tents and fires surrounded the property. Mostly I saw monsters, but there were some human mercenaries in combat fatigues and demigods in armor too. A purple-and-black banner hung outside the emporium, guarded by two huge blue Hyperboreans.
And this is only part of the Titan army, because there are more troops north of Manhattan.Ā
āTell my brother Hyperion to move our main force south into Central Park. The halfbloods will be in such disarray they will not be able to defend themselves.ā (pg 237)
The army that marches into central park is bigger than the one camped in New Jersey. And it is made up exclusively of monsters.Ā
At the north end of the reservoir, the enemy vanguard broke through the woodsāa warrior in golden armor leading a battalion of Laistrygonian giants with huge bronze axes. Hundreds of other monsters poured out behind them. (pg 243)
There is not a single mention of a demigod. However theyāre already joining the fight in other places.Ā
When it flew above the rooftops, I could see fires here and there around the city. It looked like my friends were having a rough time. Kronos was attacking on several fronts. (pg 251)Ā Ā
After Percy kills the Clazmonian Sow, the momentum of the battle shifts. With his main force failing to deliver a knockout punch, Kronos has his remaining armies spread out to put equal pressure on the entire defensive line, and catch it in a massive envelopment.
Midtown was a war zone. We flew over little skirmishes everywhere. A giant was ripping up trees in Bryant Park while dryads pelted him with nuts. Outside the Waldorf Astoria, a bronze statue of Benjamin Franklin was whacking a hellhound with a rolled-up newspaper. A trio of Hephaestus campers fought a squad of dracaenae in the middle of Rockefeller Center . . . . . The hunters had set up a defensive line on 37th, just three blocks north of Olympus. To the east on Park Avenue, Jake Mason and some other Hephaestus campers were leading an army of statues against the enemy. To the west, the Demeter cabin and Groverās nature spirits had turned Sixth Avenue into a jungle that was hampering aĀ squadron of Kronosās demigods . . . . . I spotted a familiar silver owl banner in the southeast corner of the fight, 33rd at the Park Avenue tunnel. Annabeth and two of her siblings were holding back a Hyperborean giant . . . . . The next hour was a blur. I fought like Iād never fought beforeāwading into legions of dracaenae, taking out dozens of telkines with every strike, destroying empousai and knocking out enemy demigods . . . . . At one point Grover was next to me, bonking snake women over the head with his cudgel. Then he disappeared in the crowd, and it was Thalia at my side, driving monsters back with the power of her magic shield. Mrs. OāLeary bounded out of nowhere, picked up a Laistrygonian giant in her mouth and flung him like a Frisbee. Annabeth used her invisibility cap to sneak behind enemy lines. Whenever a monster disintegrated for no apparent reason with a surprised look on his face, I knew Annabeth had been there . . . . . Kronos was riding towards us on a golden chariot. A dozen Laistrygonian giants bore torches before him. Two Hyperboreans carried his black-and-purple banners . . .
āTHEN THE WINGED HUSSAARSSS AARRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVEDā SABATON BLASTS ON ELECTRIC GUITAR
Ā Sorry, sorry, I mean then Chiron and the 500 centaurs arrived!
Kronosās forces looked as confused as we were. Giants lowered their clubs. Dracaenae hissed. Even Kronosās honor guard looked uneasy. Then, to our left, a hundred monsters cried out at once. Kronosās entire northern flank surged forward. I thought we were doomed, but they didnāt attack. They ran straight past us and crashed into their southern allies . . . a shower of arrows arced over our heads and slammed into the enemy, vaporizing hundreds of demons. (pg 258)
This is how the second phase of the battle ends. And during the entire night, out of a sea of monsters (hehe) we only see one unit of TA demigods. And itās the last time we get any reference to them participating in the battle.
After being driven south, the TA apparently did another long march, because they make camp northeast of Manhattan.
The Titan army had set up camp all around the U.N. complex. The flagpoles were hung with horrible trophiesāhelmets and armor from defeated campers. All along First Avenue, giants sharpened their axes. Telkines repaired armor at makeshift forges. (pg 282)
Ethan is the only demigod mentioned this time. And he doesnāt appear to take part in the next attack, aside from releasing the drakon. We get less of a description of the enemy army this time, but itās all monsters.
The rest of the battle wasnāt going well. The centaurs had panicked under the onslaught of giants and demons. An occasional orange camp T-shirt appeared in the sea of fighting, but quickly disappeared.Ā (pg 289)
Of course the Ares cabin arrives, the drakon kills Silena, and Clarisse kills it. Itās another rout for the TA.
The monsters retreated toward 35th Street. (pg 298) There was no answer from the enemy. Slowly, they began to fall back behind a dracaenae shield wall, while Clarisse drove in circles around Fifth Avenue, daring anyone to cross her path. (pg 299)
After that we have the final phase of the battle, when the Titan Army finally breaks through the Olympian lines. But once again, we have no reference to demigods other than Ethan.
The Titan Army ringed the building, standing maybe twenty feet from the doors. Kronosās vanguard was in the lead: Ethan Nakamura, the dracaenae queen in her green armor, and two Hyperboreans. I didnāt see Prometheus. (pg 312) āROWWF!ā Mrs. OāLeary bounded toward me, ignoring the growling monsters on either side. (pg 315) There were thousands of [skeletan soldiers], and as they emerged, the titanās monsters got jumpy and started to back up. (pg 315)Ā Ā Ā Ā The armies of the dead clashed with the Titanās monsters. Fifth Avenue exploded into absolute chaos. Mortals screamed and ran for cover. Demeter waved her hand and an entire column of giants turned into a wheat field. Persephone changed the dracaenae spears into sunflowers. Nico slashed and hacked his way through the enemy, trying to protect pedestrians as best as he could. My parents ran toward me , dodging monsters and zombies, but there was nothing I could do to help them. (pg 318).
The fight continues like this, until Typhon is destroyed, and the defenders are joined by the gods, and Poseidonās army of cyclopes. Itās then that the Titan army is āmassacred.ā Most of the fandom thinks that the demigods were killed too, but thatās not the case.
PART 3: The TA Demigods Deserted Before The Final Battle
As Alabaster remembers it:
the war didnāt go our way. I fought on the battlefield against the enemy, but most of our allies ran. Kronos himself marched on Olympus, only to be killed by a son of Poseidon. After Kronosās death, the Olympian gods smashed any remaining resistance. It was a massacre. āWe werenāt all destroyed,ā Alabaster said. āMost of the remaining half-bloods fled or were captured. They were so demoralized they joined the enemy. (pg 219)
When you look at this narrative, and compare it to The Last Olympian, itās actually more complicated than the TA demigods simply getting massacred.
Al says that while he was fighting, most of his allies ran. Thatās odd, because we donāt see the relative numbers of monsters go down at any point. What we do see, is the number of demigods go down.
As I illustrated in Part 2, the Battle of Manhattan has four distinct phases. Phase one, that ends when the Williamsburg Bridge is destroyed. The second phase, that starts when Hyperion attacks Central Park, and ends when the Party Ponies arrive. The third phase, which is all about the attack of the drakon. And the final phase, when Kronos breaks through.
We only see TA demigods in the first two phases; they attack the Williamsburg Bridge in the first phase as part of the Kronosās main force, then in the second phase theyāre relegated to a supporting role by hitting the defenders western flank. And thatās the last we see of them. After that, Etahn is the only demigod left standing in the TA. Alabaster must be somewhere in the background, as a retcon, but thereās no one beyond the two of them.
You might think that theyāve just already been killed by this point. After all, Percy blows up the Princess Andromeda, then goes into an Achilles Curse fueled berserker mode several times in the first two phases of the battle. Surely he must have killed hundreds of kids, right?
No, not even close.
Maybe not any at all.
On the Princess Andromeda Percy finds lots of monsters, but the number of demigods he finds could be counted on one hand. And the first one he meets; Percy spares him and tells him to get his friends and evacuate. We canāt prove whether or not any demigods were killed in the blast; we just know that the two we can confirm were still on board, Ethan and Alabaster, both survived. And when Alabaster recounts it, he doesnāt mention any bad losses at this point.
As for the Curse of Achilles, it doesnāt send Percy into anything like the berserker state some people think of it as. It might seem like that when Percy lets loose on the Williamsburg Bridge:
Youāre going to ask how the whole āinvincibleā thing worked: if I magically dodged every weapon, or if the weapon hit me and just didnāt harm me. Honestly, I donāt remember. All I knew was that I wasnāt going to let these monsters invade my hometown. I sliced through armor like it was made of paper. Snake women exploded. Hellhounds melted to shadow. I slashed and stabbed and whirled, and I might have even laughed once or twiceāa crazy laugh that scared me as much as it did my enemies. (pg 188)
But when push comes to shove, Percy can control the Curse, and what he does during it. That last moment was when he was fighting nothing but monsters. But when the TA demigods arrived, Percy pulled his punches like he always does.
I tried to wound his men, not kill. That slowed me down, but these werenāt monsters. They were demigods whoād fallen under Kronosās spell. I couldnāt see faces under their helmets, but some of them had probably been my friends. I slashed the legs off their horses and made the skeletal mounts disintegrate. After the first few demigods took a spill, the rest figured out theyād better dismount and fight me on foot. (pg 189)
Percy is still in complete control of what heās doing; even when the worst happens.
āAnnabeth!ā I turned in time to see her fall, clutching her arm. A demigod with a bloody knife stood over her . . . . . I locked eyes with the enemy demigod. He wore an eye patch under his helmet: Ethan Nakamura, the son of Nemesis. Somehow heād survived the explosion on the Princess Andromeda. I slammed him in the face with my sword hilt so hard I dented his helm. (pg 190)
Percy really has all the reason to hate Ethan at this point; after Percy spared his life in Antaeusā arena, Ethan still joined the side that had been ready to write off his death, and deliberately helped Kronos achieve his physical resurrection. Because of that Percyās friends and even-Riordan-doesnāt-know how many mortals are going to die in the next few days; and on top of all that, Ethan just stabbed the love of his life.
And all Percy does is knock him out, maybe a little harder than necessary. He makes no effort to kill him. Those arenāt the actions of a berserker with no control.
In fact, the knife turns out to be poisonsed. And Ethan now has an idea where Percyās Achilles Spot is, and might tell Kronos. And even after all of that, Percy doesnāt seriously think about killing him as an option.
āIāll bonk him on the head harder next time.ā (pg 241)
But more on topic, there is no reason to think the TA demigods have particularly high casualties in this phase of the battle, though they have a few:
Our archers shot a volley, bringing down several of the enemy, but they just kept riding. (pg 189)
Though itās vague if they are hitting the riders or the horses. In fact, it might actually be Kronos whoās responsible for more of their losses.
[Kronos] struck the bridge with the butt of his scythe, and a wave of pure force blasted me backward. Cars went careening. Demigodsāeven Lukeās own menāwere blown off the edge of the bridge. (pg 192)
I will die on the hill that between this, Ethan, and other implied moments, Kronos killed more of his own demigods than Percy did.
In the second phase of the battle, when we see the TA demigods attack again, theyāre in a very different situation.
To the west, the Demeter cabin and Groverās nature spirits had turned Sixth Avenue into a jungle that was hampering aĀ squadron of Kronosās demigods. (pg 255)
This is the only thing we see the TA demigods do as a group in this phase; and theyāre fighting people who are using very defensive tactics, more hampering than harmful. Theyāre not likely to lose many fighters. A few of them do cross Percyās path in the chaos, but even at his most Achilles fueled chaos he never loses control.
The next hour was a blur. I fought like Iād never fought beforeāwading into legions of dracaenae, taking out dozens of telkines with every strike, destroying empousai and knocking out enemy demigods. (pg 257)
He talks about killing monsters, but always āknocking outā demigods. Finally, that phase of the battle ends when the centaurs show up. Did the centaurs kill any demigods? After all, Percy said they ātrampled everything in their path.ā
Well the only report we get on the TA demigods puts them to the west. When the centaurs attack, they come out of the north east and drive the enemy south, and start off a wave of panic that ripples down the enemy lines ahead of them. The demigods were probably running before any centaur reached them, and might have had better chances of being trampled by their own monsters.
So if the TA demigods arenāt taking many losses, where do they all go in the third and fourth phases, when we donāt see any except Ethan?
They desert.Ā
Alabaster: āI fought on the battlefield against the enemy, but most of our allies ran.ā
I think the demigods of the TA signed up with no real idea of what would happen when they fought the Olympians. They thought they were going to have a sure victory.Ā
Chris Rodriguez said it in SOM:
āI hear they got two more [drakon] coming,ā [Chris] said. āThey keep arriving at this rate, oh, manāno contest!ā (pg 122)
Alabaster C. Torrington said it in SOM:
āKronos wasnāt supposed to lose! You said the odds of winning were in the Titanās favor! You told me Camp Half-Blood would be destroyed!ā (pg 196)
And they probably werenāt well prepared for the war either. At one point Luke says they will fight well because he has been training the army. But most of them join because they are the children of minor gods who swear for Kronos, and that doesnāt happen until the end of BOTL, after Luke has been possessed. Most of the TA demigods never got training from him; including their two highest ranking members, Ethan and Alabaster. Itās no wonder most of them werenāt prepared.
As I was running up the stairwell, a kid charged down. He looked like he had just woken up from a nap. His armor was half on. He drew his sword and yelled, āKronos!ā but he sounded more scared than angry . . . . No way was I going to hurt him. I didnāt need a weapon for this. I stepped inside his strike and grabbed his wrist, slamming it against the wall. His sword clattered out of his hand. (pg 18)
And the demigods might not hold much loyalty to Kronos, a violent and temperamental eldritch horror!
Ethan moistened his lips. āHeās still fighting you, isnāt he? Lukeāā āNonesense,ā Kronos spat. āRepeat that lie, and I will cut out your tongue. The boyās soul has been crushed.ā (pg 236) āBut, my lord,ā Ethan said. āYour regeneration.ā Kronos pointed at Ethan, and the demigod froze. āDoes it seem,ā Kronos hissed. āthat I need to regenerate?ā Ethan didnāt respond. Kind of hard to do when youāre immobilized in time. Kronos snapped his fingers and Ethan collapsed. (pg 284)
And the demigods might have witnessed a darker side to his army that we didnāt.
Back on my first visit to the Princess Andromeda, my old enemy Luke had kept dazed tourists on board for show, shrouded in Mist so they didnāt realize they were on a monster infested ship. Now i didnāt see any sign of tourists. I hated to think what had happened to them, but I kind of doubted theyād been allowed to go home with their bingo winnings. (pg 15)
So, the demigods deserted. After the second phase of the battle we donāt see any at the Titan camp at the U.N., or taking any part in the last phases of the battle. They had been fed false promises, were treated badly, and were being sent against enemies out of their league.
āMost of the remaining half-bloods fled or were captured. They were so demoralized they joined the enemy.ā
All except two, Alabaster and Ethan. The son of Nemesis, who has already given so much and is so desperate to see something good and fair come out of it; and the son of Hecate, who was promised victory, and is desperate to avenge the death of his siblings. Ironically, the two demigods who stayed loyal to Kronos the longest, did so because they had faith in their godly parents.
So if there was no āmassacreā of TA demigods at the end of the Battle of Manhattan, why is Alabaster so insistent that there was one?Ā
āYes,ā Alabaster said bitterly. āCamp Half-Blood decided that they would accept any children of the minor gods. They would build us cabins at camp and pretend that they didnāt just blindly massacre us for resisting. (pg 220) āBut Iāll never bow to the Olympian gods after the atrocities they committed. Their followers are blind. Iād never set foot in their camp, and if I did, it would only be to give that son of Poseidon what he deserves.ā (pg 221)
Well, itās because the children of Hecate suffered the most in the war. She didnāt have as many children as other gods, and Alabaster was the only one to fight in it and survive. He claims he convinced āmostā of his siblings to join; but if Hecate does not have many children, and he is the only survivor of the battle, how are there still enough of his siblings to decently fill a cabin, itās likely āmostā was only slightly more than half. The sad irony is that the fact that the smaller group of demigods had more casualties than the larger ones (and it sounds like not just more proportionately, but more in actual numbers), also kind of disproves that there could have been a large massacre that affected them all.
Alabaster was a scared, frustrated, exhausted kid; who convinced his siblings to fight in a destructive war, and was the only one of them to survive. To him, that is probably always going to feel like a brutal massacre.

oh hey one more really stupid sock construction before i go: tablet woven heel band! this pair is a christmas gift for a good friend so i'm not modeling them myself, but the water bottle works ok. (i am not immune to a non-knitter who appreciates and actually wears hand-knit items, and my friend, god love him, lacks the good sense to tell me to quit giving him weird stuff, so here we are.)
i can't find the post now, but i remember seeing someone on here tablet-weave a color transition for... a sweater? a shawl? i don't even remember anymore. anyway, the idea was still knocking around in my head when i found the squircle sock pattern, which starts with a cuff in the round, adds a very long and narrow heel flap (only 6 stitches wide!), and picks up stitches on either side of it to work in the round again. this monstrosity replaces the original garter stitch heel flap with a short tablet-woven band grafted onto the back of the cuff. to "pick up stitches" along the side, i wove each section with some slack in the weft, using a couple dpns to keep things even (looking back, i don't think i actually used the weft loops themselves as the "slipped stitches," because you can already see the warp twists kind of coming undone along the sides of the dpn-less section in the bottom photo? i think i ran another bit of scrap thread through those loops, tightened the slack out of the weft, used the scrap thread as the slipped stitches, and then tightened those loops out too once i'd gotten a couple rounds into the rest of the sock to get the knitted stitches flush with edges of the woven band.)
things i would do differently if i made these again: tablet weaving is a twined weaving style, so it's a bit thick, and it gets even thicker when you have to weave in the ends. this pattern uses 18 tablets with 4 threads each, for a total of 18 x 4 x 2 x 2 = 288 total ends that need weaving in, which as you can imagine is Deeply And Profoundly Unfun. i might do a missing-hole tablet woven pattern (which the "dublin dragons" motif is supposed to be anyway, but i wanted three colors to match the flag stripes), or i might do a baltic pickup band instead, which should reduce the bulk a bit.
#these are the stupidest things i've ever made BAR NONE#fiber art#knitting#knitblr#tablet weaving#next year i'll make him something nice and normal with a lot of fun colorwork i swear. but this year we're getting unhinged with it :D#subcreation#aggressive linguistic prescriptivism#inland

In love - @jegulus-microfic - word count 288
It happened on a day of spring, when they were so full of youth, love and joy.Ā
James was having a nap by the oak tree in the Potter Manor, eyes squeezed shut and breathing so slow when he heard the sound.
Low giggles.Ā
The sound was better than a musical, he instantly thought, or siren songs in the manner. James wanted to beg the gods to listen to that sound again. Maybe he might even try to bottle it, hidden from the world, only to himself.
His to keep and listen.
The giggles of Regulus Black.Ā
He was playing with his kitten, pure black and tiny like a furball. He has named him Whiskers. Tiny furious thing, yet James couldn't help himself, he adored that little one.
Whiskers had been in the family for two months yet this was the first time James saw or heard Regulus like this. Carefree and happy. Joyful and at ease.Ā
He was devastatingly beautiful.Ā
Pink soft lips parted wide, eyes shining so brightlyāJames was sure there were stars hidden behind. His shoulders were going up and down in rhythm, shaking his small body furiously. The crown of raven black curls so wild, shaping his marble like face.
An angel, it was James' first thought.
And James? Well, James was a gone, gone man.Ā
A wide grin already was on his face and he felt his stupid heart doing a soppy dance, his ridiculous brain already planning the wedding ahead.Ā
Golden boy was in love, love and love.
Much later, when they grew older, grey hair and wrinkles; he would say to his grandkids at any given opportunity that this was the day he fell in love.
In love with Regulus Black.Ā

Hear me out... SCP!141 with SCP288 (the marriage rings)
:>
GOD. YEAH.
Note from O5 regarding SCP-288 tests:
In an effort to make the members of SCP-141 more docile each male will be subject to no more than an hour to observe the effects of SCP-288 on their personality. It is hoped that SCP-288's memetic effect might neutralize their more dangerous impulses. I understand that this has raised some ethical questions with our more psychologically attuned staff. To which I say: proceed with the tests.
Testing Log, SCP-288:
Subject: SCP-141-A Research Note: Seems only right to start with the ring leader. Results: SCP-141-A is exposed to SCP-141 and brought into standard human containment unit(HCU) which has been outfitted to resemble a small apartment with simple luxuries. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ offers him the ring box, he chuckles but takes it. "Sweetheart, ya shouldn't 'ave." He opens the box and inspects the rings. "matching set, cute." "If you would wear the-" Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ stops, frowns. "The men's ring?" SCP-141-A supplies. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ nods, pressing the heel of her hand to her temple as SCP-141-A removes the men's ring and slips it onto his finger. SCP-141-A spends the next several minutes observing Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ silently. He tips his head then tugs a box of cigarettes from his pocket and pulls one free with his teeth. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ takes a seat in the armchair and SCP-141-A pulls her back to standing with a hand under her elbow. "Ah, ah sweetheart, the couch." He sets her on the provided couch and searches his pockets for a lighter. "Darling-" He tips his head again, taking the cigarette from between his lips and holding it out to her. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ takes a lighter from her pocket and lights the cigarette for him. "Those things give me a headache." Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ sighs. "Man upstairs won't shell for cigars." SCP-141-A takes a seat next to Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬, resting his hand on her knee. The two sit in silence as Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ rubs her forehead with her fingers. SCP-141-A's hand creeps up her thigh in the quiet. "You know-" SCP-141-A exhales smoke, Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ winces, her hand drops to his on her thigh. "You're hurting me." "-Not right for you to watch a man and his wife." [DATA CORRUPTED]
Testing Notes:
Computers in observation room C ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ due to SCP-141-A's ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬, security personnel dispatched to HCU ā¬ā¬ after video feed was interrupted and the cameras were ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬. Security was able to intervene before SCP-141-A could [Data redacted]. Recommending Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ for immediate psychological examination.
Note from Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬:
I'm fine. Testing may resume.
-
Testing Log, SCP-288:
Subject: SCP-141-B Research Note: I thought we weren't doing any more tests on this guy? Note: Testing will continue. Results: SCP-141-B is exposed to SCP-141 and brought into standard HCU outfited to resemble a small apartment with simple luxuries. The ring box is left on the table with instructions. SCP-141-B places men's ring on his finger, and D-class personnel is let into the room. Announcement made informing SCP-141-B of "wife." SCP-141-B displays characteristics in line with typical SCP-288-2 exposure including: deference to authority, "doting" behavior, and discussions of family planning. "Wife" displays rapid behavior changes in line with SCP-288-1 exposure, making comments on the state of the house and attempting to use the kitchen to bake for SCP-141-B. Test halted after SCP-141-B's attempt to [redacted]. D-class "Wife" displays advanced cognitohazardous effects, and actively resisted staff attempts to neutralize memetic damage. Suffered severe seizures for ā¬ā¬ hours before passing. Time of death ā¬ā¬:ā¬ā¬PM. SCP-141-B unresponsive to questions, still smiling ā¬ā¬ā¬ hours post testing.
-
Testing Log, SCP-288:
Subject: SCP-141-C Research Note: I'm not going in there after what he did. O5 Note: Yes you are. Results: Immediately after placing SCP-288-2 on his own finger SCP-141-C goes after Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬, after several minutes of struggle Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ is wrestled to the ground and SCP-288-1 is forced onto her finger. SCP security staff prevented from intervening. SCP-141-C holds Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ against the ground with her arm twisted behind her back for several minutes, making her repeat bible verses regarding marriage and "wifely duties." He only lets her up upon completion and apologizes for punishing her. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ smiles and nods along to his apology. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ is kept on her knees beside the couch. Testing stopped when SCP-141-C removed his [redacted] from his trousers and told her to "open." Security staff were able to safely remove SCP-288-1 from Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬'s finger despite interference from SCP-141-C.
Testing Notes:
Recommending Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ for immediate psychological examination, and mental health leave. Denied
-
Testing Log, SCP-288:
Subject: SCP-141-D Research notes: audio logs and transcriptions pending review, staff may be editorializing these. O5 Notes: Someone muzzle the psych please. Results: SCP-141-D is exposed to SCP-141 and led into standard HCU furnished like small apartment with simple luxuries. His former psychiatrist Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ is handcuffed to the arm chair, she tugs at her restraints in a panic as SCP-141-D takes his seat on the couch. SCP-141-D reads instructions next to ring box and removes SCP-288-2, and places it on his finger. After a moment he steps around Dr.ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ in order to fiddle with the handcuffs. "Calm down sweet'eart, tryin' ta get ya outta the damn things." (Voice can be heard over receiver) Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬'s struggling only gets worse. SCP-141-D grabs her by the throat and holds her against the back of the armchair. Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ appears to be on the verge of hyperventilation. "Come on." SCP-141-D breaks the chain on one of her cuffs and Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ smacks him across the face. SCP-141-D's grip on her tightens and quickly loosens, anger there and gone only long enough for Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ to cower. "Not gonna hurt ya," [researches described voice as "gentling" pending review] "wouldn't hurt ya, calm down f'r me love." SCP-141-D spends the remaining hour, holding Dr. ā¬ā¬ā¬ā¬ in a bear hug as he sits in the armchair and she thrashes against his hold. SCP-141-D sustains multiple bite injuries and several headbutts, leading to what was assumed to be a broken nose. Upon examination no injuries were found.
SCP-141-D Note:
Don't you ever put that on me again. Like puttin' a fightin' dog in a jumper. I'll kill 'er next time.

I felt compelled to cite my sources for Armand and Lestat being an item off and on over the years. Iāve been in this fandom too long to get involved in ship wars or to really have an OTP for these crazy-ass vampires. I happen to love Armand and Lestat from the books and think that Assad and Sam make it work so well on screen. I hope we get loads more of them for season 3.
Anne wrote all of her characters as deeply flawed, we can all agree on that, but the nearly fanfiction level of āletās see what happens when two of my most flawed characters get togetherā writing she did in TVA is brilliant. Book spoilers below.
Here's a link to a post I made about Lestat's perspective of Armand from TVL. (I have included one quote from TVL below because it's too precious to exclude.)
Lestat spends almost a full page describing how he sees Armand at a ball at the Palais Royal:
Yet never had Nicolas, mortal or immortal, been so alluring. Never had Gabrielle held me so in thrall. Dear God, this is love. This is desire. And all my past amours have been but the shadow of this. - The Vampire Lestat, p. 275
They literally feel the same about each other: instant attraction, love, desire, and so on. And it is powerful.
So powerful that hundreds of years later (in one of my favorite passages from any of her books) Armand is the only person allowed to approach an unconscious Lestat. Not only approach him, but allowed to lay down next to him and cuddle, caress, and console Lestat, to cry onto him.
I looked down on Lestat, who was unchanged, his hair fallen as before, a little over his left eye. His right arm was out, and his fingers curling upwards, and there came from him not the slightest movement, not even a breath from his lungs or a sigh from his pores. I knelt down beside him again. I reached out, and without flinching or hesitating, I brushed his hair back from his face. I could feel the shock in the room. I heard the sighs, the gasps from the others. But Lestat himself didn't stir. Slowly, I brushed his hair more tenderly, and I saw to my own mute shock one of my tears fall right onto his face. It was red yet watery and transparent and it appeared to vanish as it moved down the curve of his cheekbone and into the natural hollow below. I slipped down closer, turning on my side, facing him, my hand still on his hair. I stretched my legs out behind me, and alongside of him, and I lay there, letting my face rest right on his outstretched arm. Again there came the shocked gasps and sighs, and I tried to keep my heart absolutely pure of pride and pure of anything but love. It was not differentiated or defined, this love, but only love, the love I could feel perhaps for one I killed or one I succored, or one whom I passed in the street, or for one whom I knew and valued as much as him. - The Vampire Armand, pp. 368-369 (emphasis is mine)
But the contrasting absolute annoyance Armand has for Lestat is hilarious! He loves him but can barely stand him sometimes (that isn't unusual for Lestat's admirers).
Lestat, not a bad friend to have, and one for whom I would lay down my immortal life, one for whose love and companionship I have ofttimes begged, one whom I find maddening and fascinating and intolerably annoying, one without whom I cannot exist. The Vampire Armand, p. 276
But it's the way he describes things that happen to him that maddens me, the way that he connects one incident to another as though all these random and grisly occurrences were in fact links in some significant chain. They are not. They are capers. And he knows it. But he must make a gutter theatrical out of stubbing his toe. The James Bond of the Vampires, the Sam Spade of his own pages. - The Vampire Armand, p. 288 (emphasis mine)
Though Armand's head on Lestat's arm might be the most beautiful image of the two of them from any of the books, this line gives me chills every time:
"Lestat, my Lestat - for he was never theirs, was he? - my Lestat was crazed and railing as the result of his awful saga [ā¦]" - The Vampire Armand, p. 320 (emphasis mine)
Yes, your Lestat.
