10/9/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU

Neil hesitates again, “There’s a little diner around here. Turn right.” Neil guides and Andrew is sure that it is away from whatever is making him antsy like this.

Andrew turns left, “Whoops.”

Neil glowers at him, “Then take a right.”

“Okay.” Andrew takes a right and he can feel Neil’s anxiety sky-rocket next to him.

“Andrew,” Neil’s voice is far more like the brown haired brown-eyed teenager that he’s trying to apologize to than the man he already really likes.

“Tell me what I’m avoiding.”

Neil works his jaw, “It’s just a tree up the road. I went there once, I don’t want to think about it.” 

Andrew makes an illegal U-turn and Neil’s shoulders settle.

They head away from whatever tree related monster is haunting Neil even this far away from his days spent running. Andrew eventually finds a decent looking diner and is more than fine with Neil steering the direction in shit talking the University of Georgia.

“I mean real bulldogs are fine.” Neil shrugs, “But their mascot is creepy and also tried to start up beef with Rocky last year.” He waves a fry around and despite himself Andrew thinks about listening to Neil complain about inconsequential college mascot drama for the rest of his life and hates how appealing it sounds.

10/23/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU

“Sure did.” Neil agrees before he heads off to his own part of the house. Matthew’s parents will eventually be moving in the next couple years so Matthew, Smith, and Jackson had an in-law suite built off the side of the house. Neil doesn’t spend a lot of time in the apartment other than sleeping but Smith’s family treats it like his own private house.

He still doesn’t know how he lucked into a set-up like this other than Smith saw him looking rough the first couple months and more or less started dragging him to family dinner. Neil had been desperate for connection at the time, having felt more alone than ever after leaving Palmetto and everything that had ever been stable in his life behind. Not to mention the distance he had tried to put between himself and everyone who mattered to him from the Foxes.

It had started with dinners and then a few nights he ended up staying over when Smith claimed to be too tired to drive him back to his dingey apartment. Then a few nights became a week. Then Neil had drawn a line in the sand for himself and stayed in his shitty basement apartment just in time for the rainy season and caught the mother of all colds, which is to say pneumonia.

He remembered stumbling into practice and then he woke up in Smith’s guestroom three days later perfectly tucked in, filled to the brim with soup, and antibiotics. After that he had been gently urged to take residence in the unused in-law apartment so that he could have his privacy and all attempts to pay rent were firmly declined even though Neil should be making more than enough and Smith would know that. “Jackson and I both know what it is like to just need to have a home, a family, and a place to set yourself up. I know you have your teammates from college too, but we can be that for you here.” Smith had said on the way to practice one morning after Neil had asked about it.

Neil can’t help but think it was a shame that Smith and Jackson hadn’t been Foxes, though he supposes he still wouldn’t have met him since they’d graduated before Neil’s freshman year.
