Rooftop Confessions
TW: Talk of past suicide thoughts.
Greg Lestrade internally sighed as he stepped onto the roof of St. Bart's hospital and saw Sherlock Holmes already there. He just wanted to smoke in peace and not be harangued yet again that he should quit. It was his choice.
Sherlock stood near the ledge looking out at the vista of London. The lightly breezy afternoon was taking delight in playing with the man's curls. The dark hair seemed to move as though under water, the smoke of the cigarette he held in his gloved hand at face level swirled around the sharp cheekbones of handsome man.
Sherlock had a look of concentration. Greg would have thought he was in his Mind Palace again, but that was not quite - right? Greg was trying to decide f he wanted to go a different section of the roof of the roof to smoke or leave altogether…
Then Sherlock gave a different choice.
"Lestrade come over and smoke or go away but for God's sake stop hemming and hawing at the door. Its squeaks are more irritating than Anderson's voice!" the curly haired genius called out.
Greg chuckled to himself as he joined the genius for a smoke. The two stood in companionable silence simply smoking. Sherlock finished his cigarette but remained on the roof. Greg has known Sherlock for several years now. Well as well as anyone can know such a man as a Holmes. He and brother were masters of hiding their feelings from people. Greg considered himself blessed or perhaps cursed in being one of the few people who had the fortitude to stay around long enough to begin to see beneath the surface.
"It's nice up here on clear days like today." Greg broke the silence at last knowing Sherlock was not going to. "I'm glad I chose to stay around and enjoy it." He should have known the ever-observant Sherlock would hear the slight tone in his voice. A dark eyebrow rose curiously. "You, Greg?"
"Yeah me."
"Do spill the tea as I hear is in vogue to say these days."
Greg sighed, knowing Sherlock won't let it go, and buried memories came to the surface. "I was having a shit time in my life. In a six month span me mum had died. My shite car had broken down - again. My wife was all on my arse about my hours and never being there. I had a run of cases that were shite, and my superiors were all over me at work. Then came Markell …" Greg stopped to light another cigarette. He shook one out of the pack and stared at it as he spoke. "Yeah, they tried to tell me there was nothing I could do. The rookie was determined to go it alone and prove himself and he got killed for it. And I know that now, but just then? Danny Markell was the last straw. I figured I'd blow my brains out. I knew where I could do it. I had done a bust there weeks before, knew how to get in the building. Knew I could score what I needed there to fry my brain. What else I had to lose - right? I was pants at home, pants in the job I thought I loved, and pants at life. Who would fucking care if I was gone? I felt so… So worthless!"
Sherlock looked at him intently for a moment, something subtle shifting in those mercurial eyes, but said nothing, so Greg continued.
"I was on the top landing of the stairwell on my way to the roof that night to toss my life away - literally, when I heard a door open some stories below and someone speaking. The voices were kind of warped given the distance and echo, but I distinctly heard him say you have a choice, wallow in your misery and prove the idiots right or rise up above it and prove you have half the brain were blessed with and use them. Use them and show them how wrong they are or let them waste but choose because you can't keep going like this! I don't know who he was or who was being spoken to, but I swear it felt like he was speaking directly to me. There I was a copper in a derelict building known for drug use with enough shit to fry my brain. I knew I was a good cop. I knew I was a good husband. I knew I was a good man, but could all of them be better? Yes. So, I stood, went to the roof and made a choice. I chose to wait a day to see if I would feel better. If I could do better. To BE better."
Greg smiles as different memories, better memories come forth.
"The next day I met Linda Younger. I talked her down from jumping off the ledge of her building. Fifteen minutes after she was safe, I went to the loo and flushed the drugs. Had I made a different choice the night before would Linda Younger be alive now? Whose life will I be saving the next day besides my own because I decided to stay around that one more day?" Greg reached in his pocket and pulled out his keys. He showed Sherlock a sterling silver key fob shaped like a horseshoe. "She gave me this on the first anniversary of that day. Said her luck had changed after we met. Three years later she was married and had named her first son after me. I don't know if someone else would have saved her, I just know because I made the choice to stay one more day, I did. Because I chose to stay, I saved more than one life. Because I stayed, I caught killers before they could kill again. Because I made the choice to stay, I met you. It's what gets me through the shite days of this job - like today. Sorry, I got a little maudlin there. And while I'm sure to catch some shite for your barely legal methods - thanks again for your help, last week, a little girl got to see her mum again because of us. It all balances out." He looked at his watch and winced at the time. "Need to head back to The Yard for my press conference for the suicide murders soon. It's going to be a shit show, I know it."
"It would be less of one if you-" Sherlock tried.
"Zip it you. If something changes, I have the new address, I'll come, alright? It's cold, let's go and I'll treat you to a cuppa first?" Greg gestured towards the door.
"Are you offering me hospital coffee? No, thank you, Graham." Sherlock huffed as he checked his buzzing phone. "Fresh meat? Excellent! You do your press conference; I'll watch. Then I think I will make the choice to run an experiment with a cadaver, Molly Hooper and a riding crop. See how the rest of the day goes…"
"Your choice." Greg laughed. He reached in his pocket and made another choice: he crushed the cigarettes there. He will purchase nicotine patches later and try quitting again.
"Greg…?"
"Yeah, Sherlock?" Greg blinked and looked at the call of his name. It was the second time Greg could recall Sherlock using his correct first name - ever. Oh, Greg knew once they left the roof Sherlock will go back to pretending otherwise, but Greg understood the importance of it being used then and was honored.
Again, something important shifted in Sherlock's eyes. "For the record, I… I for one am glad you made the choice to stay that night."
"Thank you, Sherlock." Greg smiled up at the man as the. "As am I, mate, as am I."

Whoops, I spilt the tea
#252 - Spill the tea, @flashfictionfridayofficial
Pairing -Sirius/Remus
Warnings - None
Words - 730
Summary - McGonagall has ordered Sirius to spill the tea, so that's exactly what he does. Find it on A03 here
“Oh, there’s tea,” Sirius said as he sat down in McGonagall’s office.
He had been separated from the others and was being interrogated alone. Why she thought he was the weak link when everyone knew you only had to ask James a question and everything fell out of his mouth was a mystery to Sirius, but he would play along. It kept him out of detention after all, and Remus was doing his rounds so there would be no snoging for the next hour or so anyway.
“There is tea and biscuits. I expect something in return,” McGonagall said with a raised eyebrow.
“And what would that be, my dearest Minnie?” Sirus asked with a toothy smile.
“The latest prank that was played caught the headmaster in the crossfire. He has demanded I investigate. He apparat ly doesn’t appreciate when he is attacked,” she said smoothly.
“Wasn’t he laughing when all the Slytherins came into the great hall with rainbow coloured hair the other day? Doesn’t seem right for him to find it funny when it’s everyone else but not himself. Seems a bit mean spirited to me,” Sirius said as he stopped smiling and looked at the professor.
“Sirius, whoever is doing these pranks can get into a lot of trouble,” she said seriously (ha, he thought).
“Good, they should. Did you know someone charmed our quidditch robes green? The audacity,” Sirus said as he placed his hand on his heart, acting up his offence.
Secretly he was glad Moony had convinced them to do it. It threw the entire school into chaos when even the Gryffindors had been pranked with Slytherin colours.
The only one still suspicious of them was the darling Minerva, who was sitting before him.
“Sirius, let’s not beat about the bush. I can’t prove who it was. But if you know who it is, warn them. If this carries on, there will be an investigation. We’re talking about checking wands, tracing magical signatures, and such. Whoever it is needs to be careful,” she finished.
Sirius hide his smile behind his teacup. Minnie had no idea how brilliant they really were. They all had a second wand that they used exclusively for pranks, so they couldn’t be traced. And between Remus’ book knowledge, James pure blood knowledge, Peters knowledge of how tracing magic worked curtesy of his dad and Sirus’ knowledge of hiding all the bad deeds that came with being a Black he knew unless they were caught magic handed they would be safe.
He looked at McGonagall with a straight face as he answered. “I will bare that in mind. Obviously, if I see anyone doing anything unorthodox, I will inform a prefect (which meant telling Remus who wouldn’t care as long as no younger years were hurt or bothered).”
“Hmm…” McGonagall said as she looked at him over her glasses. “And that is all?” she asked him. “You won’t spill the tea, as the muggle borns say?”
Instantly Sirius’ mind wandered, and he had an idea. “If I had any tea, I would indeed spill it, my dearest, wonderful Minnie. Now may I have a biscuit?” he asked innocently.
McGonagall just gestured toward the plate.
Sirius leant over gracefully before his hand gave a little wobble and his tea cup spilt all over him.
He quickly stood and walked backward as he cleaned himself up. “Oh dear. I seem to have actually spilt the tea Minnie. As that is all you wanted, bye,” he said as he all but ran out of the classroom. He knew he had seen his darling Minie holding back her laughter, so he knew he was home free.
He ran down the corridor, all but cackling as he suddenly bumped into someone. Someone he was very pleased to see.
“What did you do?” Remus asked with a sigh.
Sirius just smiled up at Remus before kissing his cheek and grabbing his arm as he pulled them towards the common room. “I spilt the tea, just like dearest Minnie asked,” he said with a cackle, unable to stop the laughter as he looked at Remus’ bemused face.
“You know what, I don’t care. Come on, before we break curfew,” Remus said with a soft smile as he took over pulling Sirius back to their dorm where his idiot couldn’t cause anymore issues for the rest of the night.

A Little Catching Up
Written for Hermit-a-day-May, day 12: Friends of Hermits. Or: Lizzie! ALSO written for @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt 252, "Spill The Tea"
Wc: 1000
Ao3: Here!
It’d been a while since Lizzie last saw her husband in person, since he joined Hermitcraft. Good. That meant she was able to focus on other stuff that was on her mind. And it’s not like they never spoke, anyway.
At first, they called every day, but now it was every week or so, and every time she did, he had another story to tell. Apparently, there was something about… clones of himself? A murder mystery? A murder mystery about the clones of himself? Honestly, she stopped trying to disentangle that thing. She was happy not understanding and just hearing her husband ramble.
And then, Joel got the idea of traveling together in his brain — ‘To get some inspiration for my base, Lizzie’ — and she was more than willing to indulge him.
It was nice, getting to catch up properly, to spend some time together, before they each had to go to their respective servers. It was a much needed trip, and they got to see some very wonderful builds. She may not be pulling inspiration from it for her own creations, but she’d be lying if she said seeing all the views didn’t revitalize her a little.
It’d been less than a week since they parted ways and Lizzie was boiling a pot of tea when her phone rang. It was Joel.
“Hey babe,” she greeted, bringing the phone to her ear.
“Hey Lizzie, what are you doing right now?” He spoke very fast. “Because I want to tell you something weird and don’t want you to break something.”
“Eh, nothing special,” she said, and with her phone now supported by her shoulder, she picked up the kettle before it could whistle. “Hit me with it.”
“Remember how I told you Etho was obsessed with me?”
“Uh, duh.” She began pouring the liquid into her cup.
“Well, apparently there’s someone worse.”
“That’s possible?” She asked sarcastically. “Wow.”
“Lizzie. I came back to like seven love letters addressed to me, Lizzie. Seven anonymous love letters!”
Lizzie choked and her grip on the kettle got unsteady. It spilled a bit around the cup. “Oh, crap.” It could’ve fallen on her.
“I know, what the hell! And the worst part is, he was convinced we had something going on, because someone left a sign on his base pretending to be me!”
She openly laughed now, and set the kettle with a clank before the boiling water could drop on her. He continued his pleas.
“I’m married, Lizzie! To you! And when I told him I didn’t want anything to do with him that way, he sent me a poem. A poem, Lizzie!”
Lizzie was delighted. She picked the mug with both hands and walked to the living room with it as he spoke.
“Did he, now?” She sat back onto her favorite armchair and set the mug on the side table.
“And now!” He was quickly growing agitated. Not in a negative way. Joels needed some agitation for enrichment. An agitated Joel was a sign of a healthy husband. “The context is too complicated to explain, but now I’m stuck having to make an armor stand –”
“Oh, armor stands! Your shrine for me was adorable. And little you! Oh I could just squish his cheeks.”
“...Thank you Lizzie. Right. Now I have to make an armor stand of myself professing my love to him or whatever so he leaves me alone.”
“Ha! Oh Joel, only you.”
“Only me? Lizzie, have some compassion. I’m dying over here!”
“I don’t know…” She brought the mug to her face and checked the color. Still a couple more minutes before she could drink it. “That seems like a Joel problem to me.”
He groaned, and she could just imagine him covering his face with his hands in frustration. She loved seeing him suffer.
“Right, the worst wife. She doesn’t listen to my suffering. I’m doomed. I’m in pain and she doesn’t empathize.”
She laughed again. “Well, if I’m so horrible of a wife, I think it’s time to go, now! My tea will be ready any minute now.” And with the most cheerful of tones. “Bye Joel! Good luck with the number one fan!”
There was a little moment of silence, and when Joel spoke again, it was like he was a different person. All the acceleration left his voice and who remained was the man she’d know for most of her life, who she would take strolls along the beach with, who proposed to her, who she spent a wonderful time with on their most recent trip.
“Bye babe. It was nice talking to you. It’s… it’s been a strange few days. I think the trip made me realize how much I missed you.”
She melted a little and didn’t try to hide it in her voice. “Oh, Joel. I can imagine. I miss you too. It’s been three months now, since you joined. Can you believe that?”
“And yet it sometimes feels like the first week. Like I’m still very new to it all. It’s so strange. How has time passed that fast but also so slow?”
“Something only the ruler of Stratos would know.”
“What- that… doesn’t make any sense. Why would I from-”
“I love you Joel.”
“Love you too, Lizzie. Right, I have some projects to be working on. Not the stupid statue. I’ll postpone that as much as possible. Maybe one day I can sneak you in so you could see how my base is coming along. See how the trip has helped me”
“I would like that. Just be careful of Xisuma noticing me!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll bring you in when he’s offline. Okay, bye now.”
“Bye!”
And like that, she ended the call.
It truly was nice to see him having fun on his new server and making new friends. If unwanted love letters counted as a new friend. She chuckled to herself. The situations that man got himself into, sometimes…
But she loved him all the same.

You Don’t Like Me But I’m Your Friend
It took me a bit, but this was inspired by @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt #252 — Spill the tea, as well as a fill for @queer-it-up-bingo may prompt — Aro/Ace. You can read it under the cut and on Ao3 here.
Fandom: New Amsterdam (TV 2018)
Rating: General Audiences
Pairing: Casey Acosta & Lauren Bloom
Tags: Aromantic Asexual Character, Dating, Banter
Summary: Lauren wants to find Casey a date. Casey is at his limit.
Wordcount: 940
Also created for: @multifandom-flash, April Events: compliment day | You Got Guts / @eclipsingbingo, The Rising Moon event | Blind Date / @fandombingo, The Little Prince edition | “You will always be my friend.” / @fandom-free-bingo, Mary time May | “I don’t like you.”
Casey has managed to stay away from Bloom for most of the day. One ambiguous comment on Saint Valentine’s Day after the first failed attempt at romance that ended up in the ER, and the Chief of the department had found her personal goal of the day: trying to get him a date. Casey has rolled his eyes at the idea, and that’s what took for Lauren to push even more. He then thanked two broken bones, a viral infection and a problematic cardiac arrest, which had been keeping them busy and Lauren away from her shenanigans.
He has no interest in dating. He doesn’t do dates, or romance, or anything related to relationships that people expect you to be a part of. He doesn’t hang out with people having the pressure to make them like him, and he’s content with what he has.
A date would just be frustrating. A blind date, moreover, would be confusing for the other person with whom Casey would not seek more than, if it works out, a friendship.
And he doesn’t have time to tell Lauren all of this because now is his tea time: the perfect time-frame of fifteen minutes between the visits of the afternoon have left and the evening emergencies start to flood the room. He’s gotten to the residents’ lounge on the third floor, because the ER may have the best coffee, but he knows where to get his jam from. Well, his tea.
The room is empty and Casey goes through the cupboards in search of his vanilla rooibos, a box he hides behind the snacks he believes are of the oncology resident. He takes one little bag, gets the water, and—
“You got guts.” He doesn’t have to turn around to know it’s Bloom on the door-frame, and he does his best to not roll his eyes again. “Hiding from me in the place where you think I don’t know you go to every day at this time?”
“I’m not hiding. And this can wait ten minutes,” he excuses himself.
“Emergencies won’t wait ten minutes for you to—” she sniffs, leaning to a side to try and get a look at what he is doing. “Wait, what’s that? Vanilla?”
“It is. Which I don’t share with people who try to get me dates.” With the water boiling, Casey folds his arms and leans on the counter, turning to hear Bloom’s intervention.
“What’s wrong with dating? Going out, having fun, doing things with someone you don’t know that you wouldn’t do with someone you do know …?”
“You’re not making it better.”
“Alright, I know blind dates can be scary. But they can be something you can enjoy too, if you don’t expect more than a fun evening.” Lauren smiles. She believes she’s getting somewhere with this. “Based on your dating score, which since I know you remain at zero, you don’t look like you would want anything out of a date. Or … do you?”
“I …” Casey sighs, “don’t even know where to start. I don’t want anything out of a date.”
“Alright, this gives us more room. I can pick someone you know or someone you don’t, whatever you want.” She’s smiling with confidence, and Casey fears what is coming next. “I’ve heard Calum from Accounting is single again, and there’s this cute girl who’s just moved in next door from my apartment!”
“Lauren.” The only way to stop her is using her first name. If Casey knew her middle one, he may use it too. “You’re not reading the room we’re in. I don’t even want a date.”
“So dating sounds like a nightmare to you as it does to me, doesn’t it?” She has come closer as Casey put together his tea and now plays with an open packet of peanuts someone has left forgotten there.
“I’ve never been on a date,” he says. “Well, I think I have been in a couple, but without knowing they were dates. I don’t understand how dates work.”
“So, this whole situation would put you at … unease,” Lauren reasons.
“Yes. I mean, no,” he shakes his head, “I wouldn’t go on a date, to begin with.” He takes a sip from the tea, and hopes the conversation doesn’t escalate.
“Not a romantic date, I get it. But what about … a friends’ date?” She arches an eyebrow. “You have friends. And I know I drive you crazy sometimes, —”
“More times than that,” Casey mumbles under his breath.
“But, I will always consider you my friend. If you consider me yours, that’s it. So, tonight …” she plays with the peanut on her hand instead of finishing the sentence.
“Let me guess, you don’t have plans for tonight, do you?” Casey figures out.
“Not one,” Lauren replies after throwing a peanut to her mouth. “Ask me on a friends’ date.”
Casey laughs, holding his mug with two hands. “That’s not happening.”
“C’mon. If I ask you, you will say ‘no’.”
“And you’re not wrong,” he points out.
“I’m starting to think this conversation isn’t going to end,” and now she sighs.
“Alright, Doctor Bloom. Forgetting how unprofessional this sounds, you got plans for tonight?”
“We don’t work in the same department, Casey, hanging out outside of the hospital is completely fine.”
He shows a closed smile, full of irony. “I’m not the one pushing the other to have a date here. Think of somewhere you can take me to grab a drink.”
“So, now that this is settled … can I try that?” Lauren looks at his mug. “It smells fantastic.”
“I don’t like you enough. You should get your own vanilla rooibos.”

Spill It
Written for the @flashfictionfridayofficial 252 prompt: Spill the Tea
Spill it
That tea
That secret
That thing you have
Never ever
Told
That ache
That pain
Spill it
It is alright
Really
He knows it anyway
Then why spill it
You may ask
Why drag up that
Horrible
Nasty
Thing
That secret
You have kept behind
A iron
Locked door
Deep in your heart
Why
It isn't because He doesn't
Know
No my sister
My brother
It is because
He knows just how much
That secret
That you are hiding from yourself
That secret sin
Hate
Unforgiveness
Is hurting you
So
Let Him search your heart
Bringing up all that junk
So He can forgive it
( He is longing to)
And forget it
So you can start too
As well.

"Room service!" Mika's cheery voice sounded through the place when she entered, pulling Gabriel out of his daze. He sat up too quickly and everything spun around for a few long moments. When he finally managed to properly open his eyes, she had already placed a couple of pots and dishes on the table next to the bed, and was now frowning at him. "How are you feeling?" He waved it off, rubbing his face. "I'll live, don't worry about it." They had an unfortunate encounter with a couple of radscorpions earlier, and one actually managed to sneak up on him. Damn critters. Gabriel had taken an antivenom, so he would definitely survive it - but right now, he sure felt like dying. It would pass after a few hours of rest, not a big deal in the grander scheme of things, just very unpleasant. They were close to Primm when it happened, so Mika had dragged him to the Bison Steve Hotel for the night, despite his protests, but now he was quite grateful for the bed. She had been uncharacteristically nice the whole way too, not even teasing him about getting stung - though she was probably still saving a few jokes for when he felt better. She looked at him slightly doubting, but decided not to comment on it any further, and instead turned towards the things she brought. "Anyway, dinner! I told Mrs. Nash about your state, and she immediately went into overdrive," Mika chuckled. "Had to talk her out of coming up here to nurse you back to health herself. But she gave me some weird tea that's supposed to help with the poison side effects, and a big pot of soup." "That's awfully nice of her." "Told you, she either wants to adopt or marry you." Mika handed him a cup. "Hope this tastes better than it smells. I spilled a bunch of it on myself already," she reported. Gabriel took a sip and made a face. "Nope. Tastes pretty vile actually." But Ruby Nash was the resident radscorpion expert, so he tried to ignore the smell as best as he could and downed the whole cup. She sat down beside him on the bed, trading the cup for a bowl of soup. "Hey, what's a chicken?" "Some type of bird." "Do they have those here?" "Don't think I've seen any," he remarked, raising an eyebrow. "Then maybe let's not think too hard about what's in this 'chicken noodle soup', as she called it..." Mika took a spoonful and her face lit up. "Oh hey, that's actually pretty good." After they had finished eating, he laid back down again while she took care of the dishes, then joined him on the bed and snuggled into his arms. "Thanks for dinner," he murmured, getting drowsy again. It hadn't been easy to finish the whole portion in his state, but his body would probably be grateful for it tomorrow. "You're welcome. Now, would you rather have some peace and quiet to rest, or do you like company in your misery?" He pulled her closer, nuzzling into her hair. "Company sounds nice."

Face the truth, you can't hide anymore!
Face the truth, you can’t hide anymore! by Tea Cup01
He was in the middle of a fight, that's wasn't easy at all. After all the whole class 1 A we're struggling against the villain. If hurting his friends, wasn't enough, the next sentence that left his pupest lips left clearly overstepped the invisible line. The Villain looked to Izuku and said „ I wonder how, your mother looks in red!” In that moment all that Izuku saw was red. The villains Quirk was blood slave, all he needed to do to activate his quirk he needed to bite his victim, they would do anything he wanted them to do, but after 24 hours, the poison in the body of the victim will end their lives (they will explode). Till now nobody knows how to cure it. So that was a death threat to his lovely mother, who did NOTHING wrong. In the anger(rage) he let his control slip a little bit and IT came out a little bit. His hair became lighter, and he stated to grab the air? Wait, wait. The Villains skin turned to a pale skin tone that almost every second guy in Japan has. The people he had under control, started to snap out of the control. By now Izuku hair was now Snow White. The Villain fell to the ground saying something like, that someone stole his Quirk. But as they looked to their Sensei he had just blinked!

Nana Grizol - Love It Love It (2008, Folk Punk / Indie Rock)
Hi! Nice to meet you! We are Max and Michayla, and this is the first post of our music review blog, Mud on the Turntable. The way our reviews work is one of us will recommend the other an album, and we both write some interesting things about the album separately. Read both of them, or just one of us if you like one of our particular writing styles, or neither if you don’t like either. Our first album is one Max suggested, Love It Love It by Nana Grizol. Enjoy!
Max + Michayla! xox
Michayla’s Review
Circles ‘Round the Moon
Feels like walking into your great-aunt’s yellow-walled kitchen at the break of day in the height of August. There is a hand-painted ceramic fruit bowl sitting on the counter full of oranges and grapefruit and limes. Your aunt is making pancakes and the scent of morning air, fresh cut grass, lavender, and clean sheets wafts in through the open windows while the warm morning sunlight pools onto the floors and cabinets and walls.
Colours: #f7f499/rgb(247, 244, 153), #ff693f/rgb(255, 105, 63), #68b233/rgb(104, 178, 51)
Tambourine - N - Thyme
Feels like floating suspended in deep aqua water, glittering fractals of light and swirls of infinitesimally small bubbles dancing around your body, framing you, frozen in a soft scream, watching the surface and the murk around you, but at peace with yourself, so beautifully suspended in fluid water. The smell of mossy dirt and powdered sugar on the tip of your tongue, neon lights shimmering in the distance, far, far away.
Colours: #0d7d99/rgb(13, 125, 153), #e20fbc/rgb(226, 15, 188), #c7f736/rgb(199, 247, 54)
Less Than the Air
Limoncello coloured with patches of red seeping through the page, like sun hitting your eyelashes while walking down an old dusty path, a long, hot sidewalk home, and walking through the front door of your house. Old maple floors lead into your living room, cream walls, pockmarked, covered in part by white linen curtains. You put on a record and dance barefoot in the living room. It feels like light, and the way it blurs your vision when it hits you like a camera lens. Tastes like fairy bread and rosemary.
Colours: #fff0a5/rgb(255, 240, 165), #d60000/rgb(214, 0, 0), #ad7c2d/rgb(173, 124, 45)
Motion in the Ocean
A soft blush pink set against ivory countertops. You find yourself getting ready for a party you never intended on going to, shell jewelry, drops of gold falling from your fingers like tears, the sky is darkening to indigo outside your window. Counting minutes on your fingers only to find you’ve run out far more times than it takes to eat the peaches your mother brought you late at night. Waking up tired and wishing for the sun, the taste of cold water and soft kisses, a memory of a dream.
Colours: #f2cbcb/rgb(242, 203, 203), #fcf6e3/rgb(252, 246, 227), #16074f/rgb(22, 7, 79)
Voices Echo Down Thee Halls
Stopping at a tiny diner along the highway, the vinyl seats are a pale minty-olive, you lean against the wall, faded highway signs and ancient greeting flash before your eyes, technicolour in the key of static radio waves, lying on the pavement, the sun beats down as you roll into the gravel, the dirt. Asphalt and car fumes, toasted tomato sandwiches and too much salt, wooden car panelling and the wrong colour of carpet.
Colours: #5faf56/rgb(95, 175, 86), #d1a877/rgb(209, 168, 119), #ef410b/rgb(239, 65, 11)
Stop and Smell Thee Roses
Like picking daisies in the overrun backyard of your childhood best friend’s house, dirty white picket fence set against mud and grass and a rain-heavy sky. Your laughter feels like home in her hands and you remember the sound of so many of you, running out the screen door, all strawberry-red-stained fingers and polaroid photos and charcoal smouldering in the fire pit, notes scribbled in pencil on loose-leaf paper, store-bought bread sticky on your teeth. The moment retakes you and you fall to your knees and smile and the first drops of rain hit your face.
Colours: #d8c302/rgb(216, 195, 2), #9598a0/rgb(149, 152, 160), #ffffff/rgb(255, 255, 255)
Tiny Rainbows
The rain clearing up and leaving sparkling puddles in the cracks in the pavement around your school, a warm september, you dive in and the droplets fall everywhere except your eyes, a rubber raincoat and not a single lie. Like falling down and finding yourself,a loving embrace after a cold winter day, fresh fruit on your lips, and the smell of coming home.
Colours: #05000f/rgb(5, 0, 15), #d3287b/rgb(211, 40, 123), #ff9011/rgb(255, 144, 17)
Everything You Ever Hoped or Worked For
Watching the sunset burn bright and melt down on another’s face, running away and finding joy in the places you’ve been. Crickets humming along to the beat of your footsteps and lulling you to sleep, to dream of stars and new beginnings at 2 in the afternoon. It tastes like bubblegum and sunshine, spilling down your chin from the back of your glass, bottle green, a telescope to where you’ll be, soon.
Colours: #65b277/rgb(101, 178, 119), #ff4e02/rgb(255, 78, 2), #abad53/rgb(171, 173, 83)
Broken Cityscapes
Washed out denim, sleeping with your jacket and shoes on, preaching holy words in the back alley to the birds, scattering seeds, soft and teardrop shaped, a touch of arange, rosy edges. Windchimes in the distance as they flock on the telephone wires and the words fade out, your hands dry and cracked but worth the smiles of the living, light seeping through the cracks in the clouds on a morning of second chances. The taste of cold tea chokes the back of your throat, garden carrots and lake water up your nose.
Colours: #9398c4/rgb(147, 152, 196), #e08247/rgb(224, 130, 71), #d9d4dbrgb(217, 212, 219)
The Idea That Everything Could Ever Possibly Be Said
Deep saturated garden greens not properly captured behind a grainy sepia photograph. Making notes on old graph paper, left on the desk in the unfinished attic, the trees tapping on the windows as the daylight pours into the room and into you, the exposed wooden beams house secrets and grocery lists, your mother told you to take out the trash, but that was five years ago today. You find comfort in eating cereal for lunch and all those things you would do as a child, now grown, now finding the light.
Colours: #543722/rgb(84, 55, 34), #0b5111/rgb(11, 81, 17), #e0e2b3/rgb(224, 226, 179)
Untitled Hidden Track
Screeching to a halt on a grid road just to see the stars, pen in spilled everywhere after your pen broke, you run and hide, the smell of acetone and burnt toast follows. It feels like shoving everything you wn off a desk and into your backpack and running, tears or blood or sweat running down your cheeks.
Colours: #0a0047/rgb(10, 0, 71), #f4fc58/rgb(244, 252, 88), #ff2b2b/rgb(255, 43, 43)
Overview
Overall, this album feels like falling into a pool of sunshine, and filling your lungs with it. Every song feels like another wave washing over you, the endings of each track hit like breaking the surface of the water for a gasp of air before going under again. If you needed a pick me up, try this one shot injection of good vibes, sunlight, and punchy musical citrus.
Anywho, congrats if you made it through that entire review! If you’re curious about how the songs translate into colours through my synesthesia, go on and copy/paste the colour codes into Google’s handy “colour picker” (just google it and then chuck the bits with a # into the top line of the colour picker) and it should work. I think. . .
Cheers!

Max’s Review
Very rarely do I feel like I am the target audience of an album. However, whether this is actually true or not, Nana Grizol’s Love It Love It is certainly one that matches how I currently feel at this stage in my life.
All throughout this record, there is a sense of nostalgia and bittersweetness that I just couldn’t shake while listening to it. This emotional impact is noticeable from the very first song, “Circles ‘Round the Moon”. It represents a type of fantasy that I, and probably many other 18-year-old music fans who are scared of, yet excited about the intimidatingly massive world they’ve been thrust into, have quite often. Yes, the track tells a story of young relationships and figuring all those out, but it also describes leaving the big city for some place of solitude and simplicity in nature. It’s a beautiful thing really.
Musically, this feeling of homemade simplicity is reflected in every track. Far and away my favourite musical aspect of this album is the horns that will often come in and add to the pretty intense emotional impact this album has. The little imperfections and human-ness that is added by these wind arrangements serves as another tool to emphasize the feelings I’ve been writing about so far. Beautiful swells of trumpets cause your stomach to do little flips of excitement and emotion in songs like “The Idea That Everything Could Ever Possibly Be Said”. They add so much to the crescendos and dynamic changes throughout the album and are an indispensable part of the project as a whole. The songs all feel organic, like they’re being played by a group of friends in the background while you’re at some house party, stoned out of your mind and feeling insecure about the stupid shit you say in front of individuals of your preferred sex.
“Motion in the Ocean”, a huge highlight on the album for me both lyrically and musically, resonates with me more than almost anything else on this record. Lines like “It seems that we are clams inside our shells / Side by side on rocks we feel the tide as the sea contracts and swells” emphasize the feeling of powerlessness an 18-year-old Canadian who just failed his first year of university in a city of 2.463 million people (as of 2016) can feel sometimes. Yes, perhaps many of these lyrics are a tad on-the-nose and almost approaching cliché, but that adds to the beauty of it. Does this really make the messages and emotions conveyed by Love It Love It any less powerful or have any less meaning? These emotions and themes feel so genuine it’s hard to hate them, as much as the cold, cynical, pretentious arsehole in me wants to. What can I say? I can’t help but like and relate to this dumb little album. It’s great.
Yeah, sure. There’s lots of folky indie rock out there that will give you these kind of feels. I’m sure there are thousands of bands like this that try to do the same things. I can’t call this album revolutionary, or even especially fresh and different. No, the power in this album lies in its consistency and lovability. It fits very comfortably in a genre and mood that’s been done to death, but the playful, casual arrangements, lovably self-deprecating yet optimistic lyrics, and complete relatability to this young, confused college student make it pretty damn special in my books. Listen to it with some friends in the forest and let the stresses of post-adolescent mediocrity float away from you for a bit. At the very least, you’ll feel a helluva lot less alone after giving this a spin.
Perhaps this was a very fitting album for our first review in the gargantuan community of music reviewers. It’s pretty hard to recommend a better album for a couple of kids just starting their journey into a brand-new world who have no fucking clue what we’re doing. Anyway, I hope you enjoy our reviews.
Love,
Max Gilmour

365 Creative Challenge
2020 has been a hell of a ride. But I want to try something different for 2021. I want to get back to my creative roots. I used to write all the time, I wanna get back in that habit.
So, here’s the idea:
I have created 365 (and then some) prompts for me in 2021. The aim is, each day I will pick one at random (except 1. and 365) and I will do something creative with that prompt.
I might write something, cook something, sew something. It might not get completely finished that same day because #life and also my job is going to keep me busy. But the point of it is that I will have 365 days of doing SOMETHING creative.
So, here is my list. Hopefully under the cut. Feel free to follow me on this journey. We’ll see what happens!

Amazing Ally’s Unreleased Playpacks?
90′s kids or 90′s enthusiasts will remember who this doll is:
Amazing Ally, released by Playmates Toys in 1999, became popular among children because of her high-tech accessories, abilities to interact with the player, and facial animatronics. Ally was able to recognize her accessories and outfits depending on which playpack was inserted into her cartridge slot. The doll itself came with the Let’s Play Tea Party playpack, although these expansion packs were available for her as well:
By the time the 00′s began, an upgraded version of Ally was released, this time with a different tea party outfit and a kitten:
Her “friend” doll, Amazing Maddie, was released with an arts and crafts playpack, along with one expansion pack focusing on world traveling:
In 2001, Bandai released Bilingual Doll Remmy, a Japan-exclusive Amazing Ally doll that focused on teaching English and Japanese. She has become quite obscure (minus one page on eBay that currently sells her), although I do own her and have uploaded videos of her on my YouTube channel, venusstarpower94. It is unknown if Remmy was ever given her own expansion packs:
Sometime after Ally 2.0 and Maddie were released, Ally was later on given yet another upgrade, this time under the name Phone Chattin’ Ally. This doll was never released, and instead was remade and released in the mid-00′s as the more modern doll children of the time and doll collectors now know as Amazing Allysen:
Back to 1999 Ally, while Playmates did release 5 expansion packs to stores, there is a high possibility that Ally was intended to have more. Some Ally dolls currently owned by doll collectors have been known to mention an accessory or clothing item belonging to a certain playpack, even though the playpacks mentioned never existed. Some examples can be shown below, which are screenshots taken from my Instagram and YouTube:
ETA 9/9/18:
As you can see, these three doll owners have Amazing Ally dolls with the unknown playpacks already programmed into them. It appears that Ally was supposed to have a rockstar, softball, and artist playpack. While the artist playpack was very likely changed to become Maddie’s arts and crafts playpack, what could have happened to the rockstar and softball playpacks? If these Ally dolls were already programmed to recognize them, why were they never released?
There was yet another possible prototype that never made it in stores. In a Toy Fair article from Washington Post in 1999, the year Ally was released, a pair of cowboy boots were mentioned as part of Ally’s accessories. This indicates that Ally could have also had a cowgirl-themed playpack prototype. A screenshot of the article can be seen here:

The question now is, where could those prototypes be, if they even exist? Playmates no longer produces the Amazing doll line, although there is still a possibility that Judy Shackelford, the inventor of all the Amazing dolls, could have information (or even the prototypes) of the playpacks. Voice actress Grey Delisle, who provided the voice for both Ally and Maddie, might also have memory of recording Ally’s script relating to these unreleased playpacks. (ETA: Delisle voicing the two dolls is not 100% confirmed yet, just highly speculated. I did just contact her asking if she remembers providing the voice for those two dolls, and I’m waiting for her reply). Remmy’s voice actress is unknown.
Just as a disclaimer, if I find more information on these unreleased playpacks, edits to this posts will come. So far, we have no physical recording of any Amazing Ally doll mentioning the mystery playpacks. I tested my own Amazing Ally doll by inserting the wrong accessories into her connectors, and nothing was mentioned of playpacks that didn’t already exist.
Nevertheless, as a huge doll fanatic, especially interactive dolls, I would love to get my hands on these prototype playpacks (again, if they even exist). For now, I guess you could consider this lost media? If anyone who worked for Playmates or were part of the Amazing doll line’s team could come forward and tell us about what hidden secrets Amazing Ally had, I and other doll collectors would highly appreciate it.
ETA 9/4/17: The same friend who commented on Ally’s softball playpack also informed me that via the Wayback Machine, if I go to Playmates Toys’ website back in March of 2000, there is a page dedicated to Amazing Ally. One of the descriptions of Ally’s features really sparked my attention:
Link to Amazing Ally’s page via Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20001213212900/http://www.playmatestoys.com:80/html/ally_main.html
If you cannot read the text very well, it says that “a complex overlay of resistor technology allows Ally to verify multiple items for UP TO 50 PLAYSETS”. 50 playsets?! With only six (including the tea party set bundled with the doll) released to stores? I smell something fishy here...
The fact that the creators themselves confirmed Ally to have the capacity to recognize up to 50 of her own playsets further proves that there are more playsets than what were officially released to stores. Whether these playsets were already completed but never released or in the process of being created but just never got around to being finished still remains a mystery...
ETA 9/5/17: I found a newspaper article from St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Amazing Ally’s debut, from St. Louis, Missouri, on November 7, 1999. I was able to access the article through my school’s database, but there is a link to the newspaper article itself here: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/143051539/
Keep in mind though, if you want to access this article, you’ll have to start their free trial and read the article there (unless you’re lucky enough to have free access to it from your school). Because I am not allowed to post the entire article due to copyright laws, I will only discuss a key point they made.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch states in the article that “the manufacturer has produced 15 playware sets for Amazing Ally. Each play set includes an outfit, play accessories, hair accessories, game and story cards, and are themed to specific adventures such as Cheerleader, Slumber Party, School, Ballerina and In-Line Skater”. Therefore, we now have confirmation that out of the 50 playsets planned for release, 15 were actually made. Out of the 15, only 6 were actually released.

Speaking of these already-made playsets, another article by Business Wire New York mentions some expansion packs for Ally that were never heard of before. The article covered the latest unveilings at the Toy Fair back in February 8, 1999. Again, because of copyright laws I cannot post the article itself here, but I will only discuss a key point they made. This article stated that the doll’s owner could have “many exciting virtual adventures like tea parties, being a princess, or playing veterinarian". Neither a princess nor a veterinarian playset were ever released.
(Business/Entertainment Editors & Toy/Retail Writers Toy,Fair 99. "Smart, Technology Toys Lead the Way at Playmates Toys Inc. for this Year's Toy Fair." Business Wire: 1. Feb 08 1999.)
So far, out of those 15 playpacks, 6 were released, leaving us with 8 unreleased. Out of those 8, we have been able to find 6: the rock star, softball, artist, cowgirl/Western, princess, and veterinarian ones.
ETA 9/7/17: Got some kinda-bad news... Playmates responded back but it looks like all hopes of getting a look at their prototypes (at least from them, anyway) is out the window. Here's what they said: " Hi Venus, Unfortunately, we do not have any information regarding prototypes of the Amazing Ally doll. With as many years that have passed, the people who created the doll within Playmates no longer work here. Any prototype ideas that do not surface as actual product are usually trashed. Sorry for no having more information to give you. Aubrie Fox Consumer Affairs Playmates Toys Inc. 310-252-8005 "
Soooo there’s that. Kinda sucks, but I’m still hopeful that one day somebody, whether it’s the team who produced Ally, Judy Shackelford herself, or the people who got to see Ally at the toy fair in 1999, will come forward and spill the tea.
ETA 3/21/2020: We have video evidence of Amazing Ally mentioning an unreleased playpack! Thanks to my friend, IG @keaundrea_seay, we now have 7 out of 8 unreleased playpacks identified: a chef/cooking playpack.
