Bonjour, mes amis! For my dear friends who is following Gabriel Attal, our dear protagonist poised to take the helm of Renaissance, you would be interested in finding himself at a crucial crossroads, juggling a web of alliances, rivalries, and an ambition that whispers of higher office. Can he harness the reins of power, balancing the demands of friends and foes, to steer his own course?

Renaissance: Rebirth or Requiem?

A "Zone Blanche" in Need of a Renaissance: This weekend, Renaissance paid members gathered up (on their online space) to vote for a 150 people list who will vote for their one and only successor: Gabriel Attal. Instead of wondering who will be the winner, our mainstream newspapers- Le Huffpost, Le Parisien, Le Monde, Le Figaro and Le Liberation turn straight to the aftermath to paint a bleak picture of Renaissance's current state. The party, once a vibrant movement teeming with enthusiastic citoyens, is now struggling with dwindling membership, a lack of local ancrage, and an identity crisis. In rural departments like Haute-Marne, Renaissance is practically a “zone blanche”—a political wasteland devoid of active members and local offices. Even Christine Guillemy, the mayor of Chaumont and a staunch Macron supporter, lamented the lack of resources and the “demotivation” among local activists. This lack of grassroots support could prove fatal for Attal's ambitions, particularly as the 2026 municipal elections loom large on the horizon.

A "Weak Doctrine" and a "Lack of Ideas": Beyond its organizational woes, Renaissance is also grappling with an ideological vacuum. Thierry Alonso, a party member and former police official, candidly admitted that Renaissance needs to "find ways to compensate for a kind of doctrinal weakness". This lack of a clear political platform makes it difficult for Renaissance to differentiate itself from its rivals and articulate a compelling vision for France's future. Attal will need to address this “faiblesse doctrinale” if he wants to inspire voters and attract new members. He’ll also need to find ways to “counter” the narratives of the right, particularly on issues like security and immigration, which have become increasingly potent in rural areas where the RN holds sway.

From "Marcheurs" to "Conservatives"?: Renaissance’s internal struggles are further complicated by its position within the "socle commun"—the fragile alliance that unites Macron's party with Les Républicains and other centrist forces. This coalition, born out of political necessity, has become a source of tension and frustration for Renaissance. Many Macronists feel uncomfortable with their dependence on the right, particularly as they try to distance themselves from the increasingly unpopular Macron. Attal himself has been accused of “using Parliament to serve his ambitions,” mirroring accusations levelled at his LR counterpart, Laurent Wauquiez.

Internal Squabbles and a "Purge" in the Making?: Attal conclusion to this succession arc has not been without its drama. His rivalry with Élisabeth Borne, his predecessor as Prime Minister and a contender for the leadership of Renaissance, left some “traces”. Borne's supporters are bracing for a “purge,” fearing that Attal will use his newfound power to sideline his rivals and install loyalists in key positions. Two names to note: Marie Lebec, the former Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament, is considering running against Aurore Bergé, who criticised upcoming new Secretary General virulently; Meanwhile Benjamin Haddad, the Minister Delegate for Europe, in a weak position after the majority of the district committee presidents of his federation contested his choice to support Elisabeth Borne during the internal campaign.

On one hand, it's handy to put your friends on the important positions. On the other hand, These internal divisions could really undermine Attal's efforts to unite the party and present a cohesive front ahead of the 2026 municipal elections and the 2027 presidential election.

Financial Woes and a "Strong Decline" in Revenue: As if Attal didn't have enough on his plate, he's also inheriting a party facing financial difficulties. As Stephane Sejourne, the outgoing chef du parti gravely reported to Elysee, Renaissance’s revenues have experienced a "strong decline," partly due to its poor performance in the recent legislative elections. The party is forced to undergo this typical mass layoffs like a company in its repeated crisis, and there are even whispers of selling the building on Rue du Rocher, a symbolic location that holds significance for Macron. This precarious financial situation could hamper Attal's ability to implement his vision for the party and invest in the resources needed to rebuild its grassroots support.

The Macron Enigma: Most recent approval rating public poll recorded a historical low of 25% and the trend is just forecasting to drop further. Attal is, on one hand, being initially disapproved of this participation of succession by the head of state himself, and on the other, encouraged to distance from the unpopular figure. As the article from Libe quoted:

"Around [Attal], they thought they could do it by hitting the President or by freeing themselves from him," analyses a regular interlocutor at the Elysée. Their model is Sarkozy who takes over the UMP and makes Chirac look old-fashioned. Except that Sarkozy has never been perceived as a Chirac supporter in people's imagination. For Attal, it's impossible, he's an emanation of Macron." Effective argument, curious consolation.

And it is just the beginning: With a 93% of vote amongst the 67.64% paid memberships supporting his list, Attal is more or less coined to take over the party. Attal isn't succeeding a gold mine but a huge liability. He must revitalize a party that's lost its spark, navigate the treacherous waters of the "socle commun," quell internal dissent, and address Renaissance’s financial woes—all while trying to forge his own political identity. Will he succeed in breathing new life into Renaissance, leading it to a glorious rebirth? Or will the party crumble under the weight of its challenges, fading into political oblivion? Either way, he's not going to do it alone...

Attal's Allies

Fortunately, contrary to the media depiction as 'lone wolf', Attal isn't alone. He has his friends and 'patrons' to help to get his job done. And they are not ordinary militants.

Premièrement, Mme. "I am at his disposal, he knows it" Genetet

The critics of the new Minister of National Education labelled her an “error in casting” and a “clone of Attal” due to her inexperience and her perceived alignment with Attal's education policies. The accusation is further bolstered down by the strategics position of Attal's former collaborators in the Genetet cabinet.

As Rémi Leleu, the former deputy chief of staff and Rayan Nezzar, the former head of the action and public accounts division both parachuted into the Genetet cabinet as chef du cabinet and directeur adjoint du cabinet respectively, one would have to wonder: Are they the helpful provision of experienced counsel or the watchful eyes of loyal execution of Attalist policy, as education is long perceived as his reserved domain?

Either way, Genetet is happy with this status quo. She skillfully embraced Attal's ambitious "shock of knowledge" education agenda, albeit with a touch more finesse in her dealings with the ever-vocal teachers' unions. On the administration of the party, She actively seeks his input on party matters and acknowledges his influence in shaping her political journey in face of the Borne matter. "We must work on our ideological backbone. I have prepared a roadmap that I have submitted to Gabriel Attal," She confided. This mutual respect and shared vision for the future of Renaissance solidify their alliance, a bond that could have significant ramifications for the party's direction.

Deuxièmement, M. "I belong to the Ensemble pour la République family" Armand

While the Minister of Finance insists his loyalty to the Prime Minister, he would reinforce his allegiance with Gabriel Attal and EPR in this le Parisien interview, as he firmly put it, "j’appartiens à la famille Ensemble pour la République".

A regular attendees of the weekly EPR gathering, Armand privately echoes with the broader discontent within the EPR ranks, with many deputies feeling marginalized by Barnier's perceived favoritism towards the LR, as he was reportedly angered by Barnier's concession to LR leader Laurent Wauquiez on pension reform.

In the same interview, he publicly expressed his reservations when Barnier proposed a reduction in corporate tax breaks. His statement, "Attention à l’impôt de trop!”, published in Le Parisien, was immediately seized upon by Renaissance deputies and widely shared on social media.

"All this is obviously controlled by Attal," one member of the government claimed, accusing the president of EPR group of using Armand as a mouthpiece for his own opposition to Barnier's budget proposal.

Enfin et surtout, France's Rich man and his new Protege

Macron's Heir Apparent?: This article I stumbled across while strolling Bluesky paints a picture of Bernard Arnault as a man who understands the art of cultivating political influence. Amongst the first to recognise Macron's potential, forging close ties with the then-Economy Minister and showering his wife Brigitte with LVMH's haute couture, LVMH was also the sole financier of LIVE, an association headed by Brigitte Macron. Now, as Macron's time at the Élysée drawing to a close and his popularity dwindling day by day, Attal is positioning himself as the natural heir to the Macronist legacy. Arnault, the opportunistic businessman as he is, is already looking to the future and back the winning horse.

Media Chouchoutage: From Le Parisien and Les Echos, these newspaper owned by Arnault are discovered to reveal a clear pattern of favourable coverage to the former Prime Minister. Both newspapers have prominently featured polls and articles highlighting Attal's popularity and political prospects. Le Parisien, in particular, has been effusive in its praise, even suggesting that Attal could be a contender for the presidency in 2027. Left us wonder: What if this médiatique offensive goes beyond mere reporting, but a carefully orchestrated campaign to boost Attal's image and position him as a viable successor to his beneficiary?
