The Art of Falling: 'The Fall Guy' Balances Action and Heart
The Fall Guy is a movie that has everything trending in the right direction before you even view it. Likable actors on full display. Explosions in full force, action that looks amazing. The big question, though, is how does that all come together as a final movie?
Let's jump right into that. There is a lot to unpack here. This movie has a lot of moving parts and a lot of commetary on the film industry. Some parts of it work, and some feel like a grandiose message that may not come across as the film intended.
What immediately works is the chemistry between Blunt and Gosling. Absolutely, without a doubt, they seemed to be having a blast with this film. Without this working on the level it does, this film never stood a chance. It is remarkable the way they played off another to keep the tension of the romance throughout the movie. It elevates the crazy stunts that surround the narrative.
The story of this movie is rather simple. Lead actor missing on set. Man, in love with a woman, he thinks he blew his only shot with and now he wants to make up for the past mistakes. That is a story we have seen countless times but never set against the backdrop of a Hollywood style production. The subplot itself of the missing lead actor (played by Aaron Taylor Johnson) becomes its own thriller within the larger movie. At times, they try and do too much with that, and it leads to some predictable troupes being used to propel the story into the third act.
This movie works as a means to highlight the people who are often overlooked the most on a films production. While this movie does highlight that, the over reliance on predictable fight sequences and action sequences may have hindered that message. Most of the stunts in this movie we have seen before. For a movie that tries to show how much these performers are willing to do, they probably should have pushed that envelope a little more.
The love story is what works the best. Colt wanting to prove his love for Jody was what kept the film grounded and fun. It is really comedic at times, and that works as well to keep you invested in the plot. I just expected a little less predictability in terms of the action sequences and set pieces to elevate it above the genre norm.
While not shocking at all, the best part about this movie is the cast. That is fully what was expected going in. This movie made me laugh far more than I expected to and made me believe in the love between the two characters. Overall, the movie does its job at being solidly entertaining and a fun time while soaking it all in. Definitely worth the watch.

"Quite the bruises you've got there." "Didn't you hear?" Nat's dandy tone was second nature at this point, easy to use and thick as treacle. "Purple and green are all the rage this year in Sirap, and everybody knows Sirap makes the fashions." The pirate blinked, head flinching back for just an instant. "And what family member of yours has taken you to Sirap?" Nat laughed, tilting their chin up to expose their throat, even as their heart thundered against their sternum. This was a more dangerous game than any Nat had played before. "Silly pirate, you don't need to go to Sirap to hear about the fashions. That's what magazines are for." "Fucking dandy," Felitabby snarled. The animosity didn't matter. Nat didn't care. Or at least couldn't devote any time to that stab of rejection. They had a role to play here, as surely as they did at home. "Who are you?” the pirate demanded. “And for that matter, since you clearly know, who is he?" "Aw, Peaches," they teased gently, touching a finger to the pirate's crooked nose, ignoring the way even that little motion sent a burning ache up their arm. "You don't get to just ask a dandy something, you have to make an offering first." "You do not seem afraid of being hurt." "Let's be honest here, Peaches. If you want to hurt me, you will." "But you can do things to alleviate the risk." "No." Nat shook their head, eyes landing on the pirate's scuffed boots. "That's just what people like to tell you. To convince you that their choice is your fault. Ultimately, you have decided already whether you are willing to hurt me or not. My own actions have little to no say in the matter. Why scrabble for the desperate attempt to prevent a pain that will come either way? Why delay what could happen now?" They met his eyes, the same colour as the lantern light and lowered their voice to a whisper. "If you want to kill me, pirate, you might as well get it over with and use it to instil fear in the others." "You are not afraid?" "Now, I didn't say that." Nat let out that practised, dandified laugh again. "I'm in a cell on a pirate ship with three supposed allies who hate my guts. Only a fool would be unafraid. And I may be many things, pirate, but I am not a fool."

Here are new photos of some breyers! The Chestnut is a lil c.m. herden I picked up at an antique mall, and the Buckskin is Cossaco, the 2024 release on the Anamar mold. The Chestnut, who I named Wrangler, has ASPCA We Are Their Voice stamped on his belly, and I named the Buckskin El Diablo Del Polvo, which translates to Devil of the Dust, or Dust Devil. Anyway!
Here are photos! These are unedited. I wasn't happy with the lighting in a few of these so I edited them. I will post those later.

Return to the Lot: A Chilling Remake
Stephen King is a world-renowned author. His stories have been inspiring film and television adaptations for decades. 'Salem's Lot has been adapted before. Twice, in fact, both for television.
While this vision was originally intended for a theatrical release it ended up going directly on the streaming platform Max. That's not a bad move to make during the month of October as it provides viewers with another horror experience.
This time around, Lewis Pullman has the honor of playing Ben Mears, who returns home to what appears to be his idyllic hometown. Something sinister lurks as Ben must work with the town folks to figure out the truth before it is too late.
Pullman is reserved for most of the film as the film glosses over the backstory with a quick piece of dialogue. This movie does not play around. We are here for the creepy feeling and the gore. It certainly delivers on that aspect of it.
One very cool aspect of this film is that there are certain aspects that flip the conventions. Mark Petrie was the best adaptation of the character yet. Jordan Preston Carter stole the show in almost every scene he was in. From his very first realization all the way to the dramatic conclusion, Mark was characterized as the one with the courage to do what others would not do. He played well against most every other characters uneasiness and reluctance to the truth.
Films like these are generally not outright scary anymore, but they do provide a distraction and a fun romp during spooky season. Especially ones with the connection to Stephen King. King is the greatest horror writer of all time, depending on who you speak with it. That distinction by many is why his works have continued to shine brightly all these years later. Take a story like this set in 1975 by esthetic only, and it still feels just as cool releasing in 2024. Keeping set in that time was good because that could have easily been changed for dramatic effect.
Monster stories work because usually they come with built in rules that allow for slower moments. That is what helped build the tension as well as the eerie scenes at the start. There were a few very well executed scenes that weren't outright scary but definitely visually done. One is the scene with Danny Glick near the beginning of the movie when he hears his missing brothers Harmonica. The other that stood out was the scene detailing the continued belief in faith and the work of God. Avoiding spoilers if you have or do see the movie you will know exactly what scene that is.
Horror works best when it is simplified down to the basics. Kill or be killed. Figure out how to survive and learn the rules of the situation you find yourself in. That is what this film does to perfection, and that is why rooting for this version of the characters was easy enough.
