The year is 1949.

While all those bright-eyed and able-bodied men were fighting abroad, organized crime has been running Hell's Kitchen and it isn't planning on letting go of its power, now that World War II has ended.

When a drug that was originally designed to keep soldiers alert starts showing up in the city, Steve Rogers hires Hawkeye Investigations to find out who is threatening the community he's vowed to protect -- more specifically the illegal queer, interracial speakeasy he's been secretly running.

Following the trail of crime into the darkest parts of Hell's Kitchen, a rag-tag band of war-traumatised individuals learns that in civilian life, the lines between good and bad are often blurred. Yet while death and despair are never far, neither are love and hope.

Summary

Duke Thomas is a Gotham vigilante trying to prove he’s not just another one of Batman’s sidekicks. 

Kamala Khan is an Inhuman from Jersey City who stumbles across a case too big for her powers to take on.

Kamala could be reading a fanfic right now.

More importantly, she could be writing a fanfic right now. Volume three of her Wolverine and Storm in Space saga wasn’t going to write itself. And don’t even get her started on the Spider-Marvel Summer Fluff Bingo event. She hasn’t even drafted the free space prompt!

Instead, she hung from the underside of a bridge over black waters like a fruit bat waiting for… an unsuspecting fruit or whatever. Okay, not the best analogy. Point was, she’d been there for a while—long enough that the binoculars pressed to her face etched permanent rings around her eyes. She regretted not getting her hair trimmed when her mom offered last week as her bangs fell in the way again.

But there were bright sides.

The air was peacefully still. Not a single siren screamed in the distance—a rarity for metropolitan Jersey City. Waves delicately lapped against the side of rows upon rows of parked speedboats. The last of the gulls took refuge in their hideaways. An oddly pleasant salt-and-seaweed smell hung like the few faint stars in the sky. 

A web slapped the beam beside her. Her teammate’s invisibility shroud fell.

“Any sign of the dealers?” Miles asked.

Kamala shook her head. “Are you sure we have the right place?”

“Don’t ask me,” he said. “I’m just going off Ironheart’s intel.”

“Where is she anyway?”

“Something went down in Latveria and they needed backup.” He put a finger to his ear. “Nova, tell me something.”

Sam’s voice crackled through the communicator. “There are two unlicensed boats carrying stolen Stark Industries stuff headed your way. Though I’m not sure what the stuff is.”

Miles pulled Kamala out of plain view. As if on cue, a pair of pontoons passed under the arc bridge, its hull cutting crudely through the quiet. Each one had three men—a captain and two guys in ski masks with souped-up machine guns, including strangely shaped battery packs, bells and whistles, and shiny add-ons at the tip of the barrel. An electric purple glow filled in the gaps between the crate slats. Miles squinted. Well, his lenses did, at least.

“What are they saying?” Kamala asked.

“I can’t tell. It sounds like they’re speaking Italian but it’s like… Brooklyn Italian.” He adjusted his web shooter. “Nova, all clear to get closer?”

“All clear.”

Information and Guidelines

What is the Endless Possibility Bang?

It is a big bang event that will be running from November 2021 to May 2022! This event is based on the “What If..?” Marvel animated series.

A big bang is a collaborative event where teams of writers and artists create an illustrated fanfiction. Participants submit drafts of a fanwork and those works go through an anonymous claims process where they are claimed by a partner. Then the team completes their project together. This bang is mixed, meaning artists can submit art to be claimed by writers, and writers can submit stories to be claimed by artists.

Is this an 18+ or all ages event?

This is an all ages event. NSFW content is allowed as long as it is tagged, and there will be a separate claims sheet for NSFW submissions. Please note both participants in a pair must be 18+ for any NSFW content.

What ships and characters are eligible?

Any characters that appear in What If…? are eligible for this event. All ships are allowed as long as at least one character appears in What If…?

What kind of content is not allowed?

This bang is focused on the MCU What If…? series. Crossovers within Marvel are allowed as long as you have at least one main character from MCU What If…?. Crossovers outside of Marvel are not allowed.

Content that AO3’s archive warnings apply to (e.g. dead dove, major character death, non-con etc.) are allowed as long as you tag appropriately.

Hateful content is not allowed.

General event rules

We ask that you keep your fanwork (artwork or story) out of the public eye (i.e. social media) until your posting dates. If you’d like to share your work we ask that you only do so in private groups.

Please be respectful to all participants in the event. No hating on others for what they create or ship.

Please be considerate of all participants, especially your bang partner. If you need more time to complete your part of the project, please inform as soon as you can. The Star Spangled Big Bang is a chance for writers and artists to collaborate and create stories paired with artwork, all of which will focus on the members of Team Cap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Authors sign up to write stories that are 10k words or longer. Artists then claim stories and create art inspired by them. Creations may be canon, canon divergent, or AU. They must be centered around at least one character from the MCU’s Team Cap/Cap Quartet. All pairings as well as gen fic are welcome.

Content Guidelines

Every creation must be centered around one or more characters from the MCU’s Team Cap or the Cap Quartet. This includes Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, Natasha Romanov, Bucky Barnes, Clint Barton, Scott Lang, Wanda Maximoff, and Sharon Carter.

Any and all ratings are welcome, as well any setting, be it canon, canon divergent, or AU. Authors will be able to outline their preferences on rating, do-not-wants, and collaboration interest level if desired so that artists may take that into consideration when choosing what stories they’d like to collab with. 

Please be mindful of portraying marginalized communities respectfully. This page from Writing With Color has a list of blogs and resources that discuss diversity in writing. Any creations that sympathetically portray hate groups or actively promote racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. will not be accepted.

All fics must be edited, beta read, and legible. All content must be thoroughly and appropriately tagged.

Code of Conduct 

Please be respectful of your fellow participants, including your mods. This event is designed to be inclusive regarding characters, ships, kinks, etc. and therefore we will not allow kinkshaming or ship/character bashing within event spaces. We are a diverse community and will not tolerate any racism, transphobia, homophobia, harassment, or general inappropriate behavior towards the mods or your fellow participants.

We want to ensure that all participants have a comfortable experience within the event. If your content or conduct does not align with the guidelines and the spirit of the bang, we will do everything possible to foster conversation and resolve the issue on a case-by-case basis. However, the final decision on how to proceed will ultimately be up to the mods. Please remember that the mods are fans just like you, doing this for fun in their spare time to share more Team Cap love.

What sort of content am I committing to if I sign up?

Authors will be required to create one original, cohesive story with a minimum of 10k words (no maximum). Artists will claim one or more stories (depending on the number of sign ups we receive, as well as artist interest) and create one piece inspired by that story. Each collab team will be required to create a banner for the master post as well.

What sort of artwork is acceptable?

All art must be visual, original art. By original art, we mean that the final product must be an original product of the artist. Using photos for reference is fine, and you can use whatever traditional or digital medium you require, so long as the art starts and finishes as your own product. Photo manips are allowed as long as they have been significantly edited, via Photoshop or other programs, to clearly resemble original art. Hit up the mods if you need clarity on an idea.

What ships are allowed?

Any prominent ships featured must include one or more characters from the MCU’s Team Cap or the Cap Quartet (Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, Natasha Romanov, Bucky Barnes, Clint Barton, Scott Lang, Wanda Maximoff, and Sharon Carter.) They may be paired with any other characters, but the Team Cap character(s) should be the main focus of the story. Other than that note, we welcome any and all ships for the main pairings, including polyamorous ships, queerplatonic ships, and genfic. All side pairings are welcome as well.

What canons & universes are allowed?

Any canon or universe is allowed as long as it features one of the specified Team Cap characters. This includes any movies, comic runs, cartoons, etc. as well as non-canon AUs. So, if you wanted to write Planet Hulk Steve or Avengers Assemble Natasha or mermaid Sam, that’s perfectly acceptable!

Are there any age restrictions for participation?

Sorry, but yes. You’ve got to be 18 or over to participate.

Can I use a work that I’ve published previously, or that’s been sitting in my drafts for 3 years?

For this fest, we need all original content, none of which has been published previously. That being said, authors, if you’ve got an outline or a draft that’s been hanging around your WIP folder for too long, now’s the perfect time to dust it off and finish it! Since the art is meant to be inspired by the story, artists must start their work from scratch.

What if a friend and I want to work together?

Writing teams are welcome, but since claims will be anonymous, no author/artist team sign ups will be allowed.

How will claiming work?

Authors will create slides with information on their stories. Claims will take place at the halfway mark, and authors must have a minimum of 5k words written to be considered for claims.

The mods will compile the author submissions anonymously to share with the artists prior to claims. Once claims open, artists will submit their choices via Google forms.

Where are the submissions going to be hosted?

All submissions will be posted on AO3. We will also promote all creations on Tumblr and Twitter.

What if I can’t finish on time, will I get an extension?

We’ll have plenty of check-ins to make sure that you will indeed finish on time! If you’ve got any concerns, the mods will work with you to find a solution on a case-by-case basis. We will also enlist the help of artist pinch hitters if necessary. If you drop before claims, there will be no penalty; however if you ghost us after claims and leave your partner hanging, we’ll take that into account for participation in future events depending on the circumstances.

Can I post work-in-progress snippets on my personal blog?

Prior to claims, all snippets and sneak peeks must be shared anonymously on the starspangledbigbang account; the mods will assist in this process. Once claims are done, you will be able to announce your team and share snippets on your personal blog, as you create. Please keep snippets to 500 words or less, and roughly ⅓ or the artwork or less.

Can the fic &/or art also count towards a bingo fill?

Yes, we will allow cross-posting within bingo-style events, as long as your partner is comfortable. If your partner would prefer to keep your creation to this event only, then we would ask you to respect their wishes. We also ask that all cross-posting be done in good faith and within the spirit of our content and conduct guidelines.

I can’t sign up, but I still want to participate, what can I do?

No worries, there are lots of ways for you to help support the Big Bang! Follow us on Twitter and Tumblr; reblog, comment, and share our posts to spread the word. We’ll also be asking for help with beta reading, pinch hitting, and other cool ways for you to get involved!

Q: Are your requests open?

A: At the current time yes, requests are open! However, I pick and chose what requests I’d like to do, so I may or may not do your request.

Q: Okay...so why do you have requests open then if you may/may not do mine?

A: Because people do send in great ideas and I want to write them! However, some requests don’t inspire me like others do, which is why I don’t write everything I receive. It’s like choosing what music to listen to: as much as I love BTS and EXO, sometimes I just really want to listen to some Bowie or Queen, you get me?

Q: How do I send in a request?

A: You can send in an ask, an email, or a submission! They’ll all end up with me either way.

Q: What won’t you write about?

A: I won’t write about anyone under 18, international age. As of 2021, that means anyone born after the year of 2003 is strictly off limits. This includes ship requests. Moodboards are fine, as long as they are not sexual in nature. 

I will also not write about: incest, (non blood-related family i.e. step siblings, is okay in my books) vore, or scat. Other than that, go crazy!

A: Yes! When I’m bored I’ll reblog a set of drabble prompts and ask you lovelies to submit in requests for me to write!

A: Whenever I get bored again, which could be tomorrow, next month, or next year.

Q: Do you have a WIP list?

A: Nope! Because I already know I would be bad about updating it. And there’s too many WIP I have...it’d just be a disorganized mess.

A: Two different things factored into me choosing Germane as my main alias. One, my German nationality. Two, I’m a huge history buff and I love studying the World Wars; the Treaty of Saint-Germain was written due to WW1 and is usually forgotten about, even though it was very important in the dissolving of the Austro-Hungarian empire and in helping establish the independent states of Hungary, Poland, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia! Germain + German + ‘e’ = Germane!

A: Old enough. Over 21. Closer in age to BTS’ Jungkook and Taehyung or Seventeen’s Mingyu rather than BTS’ Jin or EXO’s Baekhyun.

We would like to wish everyone in the Cap-IM community a happy Gregorian New Year! Despite the global pandemic, we've been busy as ever, and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped us make 2020 another fantastic Steve/Tony year. 

We hope that you've enjoyed participating in this year's events and that the community has been there for you in these trying times. Thank you to our wonderful community of commenters, creators, event mods, reccers, readers and signal boosters! We wouldn't be here without you, and we hope that we see you in 2021.

In May, we launched a brand new event: the Stony Trivia Quiz! Held online via Discord to bring our vibrant, Stony-loving community together, this was such a success that we ran a second quiz in October. We loved seeing people's guesses and enthusiasm in cheering the teams on! Also in May, a year after Avengers: Endgame screened, we looked back to 2012-era Stony with a special challenge, Fanwork Like it's 2012! Creators of all kinds got involved in this fest, with lots of fabulous prompts and fills. What a great way to reminisce about them good ol' fandom days, or try your hand at a classic prompt! We also ran all our usual challenges, with a return of the Tiny Reverse Bang as our mid-year event.

Two of our community mods, dapperanachronsim and faite, stepped down this year, and we welcomed on board a new addition to the comm mod team: Neverever. We have also made some changes around the comm with the aim of making it as welcoming, accessible and inclusive as possible. These have been based both on our observations as fandom culture has shifted, and on specific feedback — thanks to those of you who shared your thoughts with us!

We're still on that journey, and have some more improvements in the works! Also to that end, we would like to introduce our Community Check In survey. We recognise that it's been a while since we touched base with you all, and we'd appreciate your feedback immensely.

Navaan generously gifted us with another year of paid Dreamwidth account. If any of you feel inclined to give the community some paid time/DW points to help us keep things neatly organized, that'd be very appreciated — we went over the 1000-tag limit for free accounts back in 2018 and the tag list just keeps growing ♥

What will 2021 bring?

Well, lots of Marvel-ous new Stony content, for sure! Holiday Exchange and Community Gifts reveals are in progress, and Remix Relay and Remix Exchange participants are creating fabulous works as we type. Remix Madness will be opening on January 10th, and the 2021 Reverse Bang opened for artist submissions today. We'd like to make a special mention to our beloved RBB event, which is entering double digits this year as we celebrate its 10th anniversary!

The rest of our annual events will also be coming round again, with STONY Bingo, Comment Bingo and Kinkmeme still open throughout the year. We have also have what we hope will be a fantastic new event to keep you thinking about Steve/Tony across the multiverse — it was delayed by COVID, but we aren't letting that stop us and, of course, a we'll run a midyear event again, so keep your eyes peeled for an announcement!

Finally, a reminder: you are all welcome and encouraged to post content to the cap-ironman community platforms. We do ask that some basic info be listed in English if you're posting a fanwork, but you can post in any language that you like! We encourage everyone to post in the cap-ironman community — this is your space to talk about Steve/Tony and what you love about it, chat about the latest canon, as well as promote your works or run mini-events!

As the original mod team, we would like to apologize to everyone for how MRBB 2021 went. We had ambitious ideas and thought we had the support to fulfill these ideas. In hindsight, we took on too much for too long. For that, we are so sorry. 

We’ve been just as hesitant to start this next round as some of you may be to join. We’ve taken all of your feedback and criticism and tried to fix as many of the issues as possible. Some of the changes we’ve made are: 

Smaller mod team - Our team expanded last year and with amazing people, but… there were too many people with poor communication. Mods were focused on just their task, overclaimed, and had too many things outside of the event to truly give what was needed to the event. By bringing the mod team back down to the original two mods and not allowing ourselves to participate as artists or authors, we’re hoping to be more transparent and focused on the event. 

Favoring authors - We’ve done our best to make things more fair between artists and authors, while acknowledging this is a reverse big bang and needs more support for artists. The first thing we did was give both artists and authors equal time to work. In the past, there was more time to work on stories after claims than before art was due to give collaboration more time. Now, each milestone before and after claims is equal. For instance, the time between sign ups and art being due and the time between team announcements and when posting ends is exactly 76 days. 

Submission and Claim Limits - Last year, we had so much art and most were from the same few artists. We typically struggle with artist sign ups, so we’ve allowed more art per participant to be submitted to help with that. We also allowed authors to claim three or four pieces depending on pinch hitter status, which contributed to our ghosting problem last year. This time, we’re limiting what artists can submit and how many fics authors can claim, to 1) limit the art so we have less need for pinch hitters down the line, and 2) limit how much one person can claim story wise to hold authors more accountable in completing the story, which would also limit the need for pinch hitters. 

Phase and Schedule Changes - We had the idea to do phases last year to make it easier for everyone to find the characters they wanted, since Marvel is such a broad category. The idea had benefits, but the actual execution admittedly failed. The separation of characters wasn’t clear and there were too many schedules to keep track of, for both mods and participants. This time, we’re still doing something similar, but it won’t affect the event process at all other than the claims. We’ll have separate claims days for each realm rather than separate schedules, but everyone will have access to everything and we’ll offer proxies as per usual. The mods will be putting the art into different realms based on the character to avoid confusion. 

Ghosting - This one we’ve highlighted in our rules specifically. We’re cracking down on ghosting from all participants with strict deadlines and clear rules on when we expect communication to occur. 

Extensions - Last year, we granted extensions for everyone for anything and that got out of hand. It’s why the last portion of the event fell apart. We’re still going to do a posting period rather than posting dates, because even the best of teams underestimate how much time they may need. At least with the posting period, the team can decide what works best for them instead of being confined to one date. There are benefits to both, but we think the posting period is better for us at this time.  

Emergency Check-In - To help prevent ghosting, we’re adding emergency check-ins. It’s a formal way for participants to request mod intervention when a participant isn’t reachable (or for other collaboration issues). It’ll be available from the start of team announcements until the end. 

We’re doing our best to continue to fix problems that we are aware of. That being said, there are some things that are out of our control. We can’t force anyone to claim and we always need pinch hitters. We did everything in our power to get pieces claimed, from posting the slides on tumblr, pillowfort, and twitter to emailing pinch hitters several times per piece. We seriously need more pinch hitters overall to help these issues, but in the meantime, we’re trying our best to still find ways to improve this aspect of the event. In fact, we’re open to hearing ideas and continued feedback from past and current participants.
