Catherine Fabienne Dorléac (born 22 October 1943), known professionally as Catherine Deneuve, is a French actress. She is considered one of the greatest European actresses on film. In 2020, The New York Times ranked her as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century.
Deneuve made her screen debut in 1957 at age 13, in a film shot the previous year when she was only 12. A major figure of the New Wave, she became, like Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon, one of the best-known French artists in the world. In a career spanning nearly 70 years, she has played more than a hundred roles and is recognized in France and internationally for being one of the key faces of the musical film genre with appearances in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin, 8 Women and The Beloved. Early in her career, she gained acclaim for her portrayals of aloof and mysterious beauties while working for well-known directors such as Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, Jacques Demy, Roman Polanski, and Agnès Varda. She played in films attracting a total of nearly 99 million spectators in theaters, making her the working actress with the most admissions in France. In 1985, she succeeded Mireille Mathieu as the official face of Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty.
She has received numerous accolades over her career including two César Awards and the Venice Film Festival's Volpi Cup for Best Actress as well as nominations for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award. She has received honorary awards, including the Berlin International Film Festival's Golden Bear in 1998, the Cannes Film Festival's Honorary Palme d'Or in 2005, and the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion in 2022.
In 1986, Deneuve introduced her own perfume, Deneuve. She is also a designer of glasses, shoes, jewelry and greeting cards. In 2005, she launched a limited-edition makeup collection for MAC Cosmetics. For the Catherine Deneuve eyewear line, she has had licensing agreements with Viva International (from 1989) and Marcolin (2014–2019) for the design, production and distribution of sunglasses and optical frames.

Adam Driver Calls Out Amazon and Netflix in Support of SAG Strike
The actor took the major studios to task and expressed his solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike while promoting his new film, Ferrari, at the Venice Film Festival.
BY CHRIS MURPHY
STEFANIA D'ALESSANDRO/WIREIMAGE
Adam Driver may be one of the few American actors walking a red carpet this week, but he is still standing in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA. While attending a press conference to promote his new film, Ferrari, at the Venice Film Festival, Driver called out big studios and streamers like Amazon and Netflix for refusing to meet the actors union’s demands.
“I’m very happy to be here to support this movie, and the truncated schedule that we had to shoot it and the efforts of all the incredible actors working on it and the crew,” said Driver. “But also, I’m very proud to be here to be a visual representation of a movie that’s not part of the AMPTP and to promote the SAG leadership directive which is an effective tactic, which is the interim agreement.”
Driver stars as Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s Ferrari, which follows a year in the life of the Italian motor-racing driver and entrepreneur. Ferrari also stars Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, Patrick Dempsey, and Penélope Cruz as Enzo’s wife, Laura. Ferrari is being distributed by Neon and STX International, two independent companies, and received an interim-agreement waiver from SAG-AFTRA for its stars to attend the Venice Film Festival and do press. At the press conference, Driver said that the waiver helped “stop the bleeding a little bit so people in IATSE [International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees] and SAG can go to work.”
The actor also shouted out Neon and STX for meeting the demands of SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) since July 14.
“Why is it that a smaller distribution company like Neon and STX International can meet the dream demands of what SAG is asking for—this is pre-negotiations—the dream version of SAG’s wish list, but a big company like Netflix and Amazon can’t?” Driver said. “And every time people from SAG go and support a movie that has met the terms of the interim agreement, it just makes it more obvious that these people are willing to support the people that they collaborate with, and the others are not.”
Driver has worked closely with both Netflix and Amazon before. In 2016, he starred in the Amazon Studios film Paterson, and in 2019 he starred opposite Annette Bening and Jon Hamm in the political thriller The Report, also distributed by the streamer. In 2020, he earned a best-actor Oscar nomination for Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, which was released by Netflix.
Ferrari director Mann also voiced his support for SAG-AFTRA and the WGA at the press conference. “Ferrari got made because the people who worked on Ferrari made it by forgoing large sectors of salaries, in the case of Adam and myself,” said Mann. “It was not made by a big studio—no big studio wrote us a check. That’s why we’re here in solidarity with both unions.”

Marriage Story (2019, Noah Baumbach)
09/11/2023
Marriage Story is a 2019 film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
When Nicole is offered a role in the pilot episode of a new television series in Los Angeles, she decides to leave the theater company and temporarily go to live with her mother together with her son.
Charlie decides to stay in New York, as his show is about to be performed on Broadway.
Charlie wins a MacArthur Fellowship and uses the first money he receives to pay his lawyer, Jay. Nora highlights Charlie's infidelity and her emotional distance, while Jay magnifies Nicole's drinking habit, portraying it as alcoholism.
In November 2017 it was announced that Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Der, Merritt Wever and Azhy Robertson had joined the cast of a film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, produced by David Heyman's Heyday Films and co-financed by Netflix, which would also have handled its distribution. In March 2018, Kyle Bornheimer joined the cast, followed by Ray Liotta in June of that year and Julie Hagerty in November.
Filming of the film, which had a budget of approximately 18 million dollars, began on January 15, 2018 and ended in April, taking place in New York and Los Angeles.
The first trailer for the film was released online on August 20, 2019.
The film premiered on 29 August 2019 in competition at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
The US premiere was held on October 4, 2019 at the New York Film Festival. The film had a limited distribution in US cinemas by Netflix starting from November 6 of the same year, being then released on its streaming platform starting from the following December 6. In Italy, the film was distributed theatrically by the Cineteca di Bologna starting from 18 November 2019, and was then released on Netflix at the same time as the of the world.
In January 2020, it was announced that the film would receive a DVD and Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection.
The Italian dubbing of the film was carried out at Dubbing Brothers Int. Italia and edited by Stefanella Marrama.

FERNANDO SOLANAS, EVAN ENGLISH & JOHN HILLCOAT, FERNANDO BIRRI, Toronto film festival 1988
We all talked about South America a lot in the 1980s, where decades of political tumult had produced no shortage of movies - like Sur, directed by Argentine filmmaker, writer, musician (and very soon, politician) Fernando Solanas, who presented the film at the 1988 Toronto film festival. Solanas co-wrote the manifesto "Toward a Third Cinema", which became very influential in filmmaking on the continent, and he had fled his country in 1976 for Paris after his life was threatened by the new military regime in Argentina.
Solanas came off very much as an elder statesman when I photographed him in one of the clean, well-lit rooms in the old Four Seasons hotel in Yorkville. He had palpable charisma (and great hair), and in hindsight it's easy to see how he would make a great impression when either running for office or presenting his films at Cannes, Venice or Berlin
Sur was a film about life after the military coup d'etat, but it wouldn't be the end of Solanas' troubles with his country's government; he was a critic of Argentina's president, Carlos Menem, and was shot six times in May of 1991, which propelled him to start a political career as a member of several different parties, and he even ran for president in the 2007 general election. Solanas died in 2020 in France during the COVID pandemic.
Writer/producer Evan English and director John Hillcoat arrived at the 1988 film festival with a "buzz" film - their grim prison drama Ghosts of the Civil Dead. It was partially based on the story of Jack Henry Abbott, the criminal who was paroled after a campaign led by writer Norman Mailer, only to murder a man six weeks after being released from prison. The script was co-written by singer Nick Cave, who also starred in the film and wrote the soundtrack, and Cave's participation accounted for a lot of the buzz around the picture.
English and Hillcoat presented themselves for interviews (and photo shoots) as a unified front, and my memory of them is a lot of laconic humour and dry sarcasm. Looking back I photographed them like musicians for a story that might have run in the NME or Melody Maker. The film seems to have been the high point of English' movie career, but Hillcoat (an Australian who spent much of his youth in Hamilton, Ontario) went on to direct movies such as The Road (2009) and Lawless (2012), as well as the HBO biopic miniseries George & Tammy (2022).
That's the full title of an early short film by Argentine director Fernando Birri, but it would usually be referred to as La primera fundación de Buenos Aires. Birri was at the 1988 Toronto film festival with his film A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes in Spanish), based on a short story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Like many South American filmmakers he was a major ally of the Cuban regime and made two films about Che Guevara, and his first feature Los inundados (1961) won the award for best first film at the Venice Film Festival.
Birri had a playful public image and his films were full of comedy and "magic realism", but I have to admit that many of my photos of him were inspired by the cover of a recent book of photographs by Roman Vishniac, of life in the Jewish communities of the Baltic and Eastern Europe before the genocides of World War Two. One of these shots has ended up being used (uncredited) on academic websites and in obituaries for Birri after he died in 2017. I've noticed that Netflix is about to air a miniseries based on Garcia Marquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude; maybe we'll start talking about South America and "magic realism" again.

Movie Review: Ennio
Italian music composer Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) was one of the greatest musicians of all time. Without a doubt! He composed the score for over 500 films. That’s not a typo! At the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, Quentin Tarantino accepted the award for Best Music Score on behalf of Morricone for the score to QT’s The Hateful Eight and he said of him:
“As far as I am concerned is my favorite composer! When I say favorite composer, I don’t mean movie composer, that ghetto. I’m talking about Mozart. I’m talking about Beethoven. I’m talking about Schubert. That’s who I’m talking about.”
I fully agree. He’s not just one of the greatest film composers of all time, but music composers! It is so hard to choose the highlights of such a rich and robust filmography and discography, but if I had to choose, I think his score for Sergio Leone’s westerns A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (which I watched in my Directing class in college and did a whole paper on FYI) are all time capsule worthy! That director / composer collaboration was among the greatest in history. Other favorites of mine include The Battle of Algiers, Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven, Samuel Fuller’s White Dog, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables and Casualties of War, Phil Joanou’s State of Grace, Bugsy, and In the Line of Fire. But it was QT who finally got Morricone an Academy Award for Composing (he had received an Honorary Award in 2007) for scoring The Hateful Eight. Prior to this collaboration, QT used various Morricone pieces in the soundtracks to Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood. I got my copy of Hateful Eight soundtrack on vinyl!
movie poster
Director Giuseppe Tornatore worked with Moriccone a ton on thirteen films he directed since 1988, notably his love letter to film Cinema Paradiso (read my 2021 blu-ray review here), which had so many beautiful themes and ideas tied together by Moriccone's score. Tornatore had a great working relationship and friendship with Moriccone and made this comprehensive documentary Ennio that premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and was recently released in the U.S. including Coolidge Corner Theatre.
The doc is filled with a ton of Moriccone himself telling his story and tons of anecdotes. There's a ton of archival footage and lots of clips from films. Featured interviewees include Clint Eastwood (start of a lot of the Leone films), QT, Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone, Joanou, Dario Argento and Tornatore himself. There's also a ton of musicians represented including Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Quincy Jones, Bruce Springsteen (he grew up a fan), James Hetfield (Metallica covered his music live on numerous tours) and more.
the maestro at work
This is very much a doc about film history based on the sheer amount of films he composed and at times it borders on hagiography, but at its core it is about a legend who deserves the documentary treatment. I also commend Tornatore for not turning this whole film into a doc about his own relationship with him, but more just putting himself into the pantheon of work. There was quite a lot I learned, including how he almost scored A Clockwork Orange for Stanley Kubrick, but wasn't able to due to scheduling. In the end we're lucky this doc was made when Moriccone was alive to tell his story. Expect this to be shown in both music and film classes for years to come.
for info on Ennio
3.5 out of 5 stars
