Of all the years for Ford to slap the Mustang name on an electric crossover, 2020 seems about right. Subverted expectations are the name of the game and while the nomenclature might not sit well with everyone, rest assured that the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a lovely little EV that speaks of great things to come.
The normal Ford Mustang’s M.O. is pretty straightforward: It’s meant to deliver balanced handling with power that has the capability to overwhelm the rear end. To that end, my First Edition tester holds the party line. With about 332 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque, there’s definitely enough go-juice, but with the majority of the powertrain’s heft located as low as possible, it takes a whole lot of brute manhandling to unsettle the Mach-E. As expected, the instantaneous electric torque makes for exciting starts, but it’s not enough to rip your toupee off your scalp. Even in its sharpest vehicle mode, there’s still plenty of sensible right-pedal modulation on offer, making it easy to power out of one corner and into the next.
Aside from the exciting starts, the Mach-E feels somewhat tame, as if Ford is aiming for more of a grand-touring-style experience. The suspension’s standard fixed dampers err toward softness, with a bit of body roll in corners and a surprisingly well-cushioned ride on the highway. Magnetorheological adaptive shocks are on the docket, but only for the upcoming GT, which seems like a missed opportunity — not only to milk a few more bucks from buyers, but also to offer a slightly sportier experience without requiring the full chunk of change the GT variant will command.
The Mustang Mach-E’s regenerative brakes don’t exactly command a sports-car level of precision, but that doesn’t make them bad. The one-foot-driving mode is stellar, with the right amount of lift-off deceleration making for easily controllable stops. My issues only become present when the left pedal is actually required; the blend point between regenerative and friction braking is incredibly obvious, with a marked shift in deceleration as I push further into the pedal’s throw. Some more linearity would inspire more confident braking and make for more Mustang-y dynamics, so I’m hoping that this gets sorted out on the GT.
The Mach-E offers three different vehicle modes. Whisper is my favorite, taking advantage of the car’s inherent on-road smoothness with a numb accelerator and comfortably light steering feel. Engage, the middle-child option, sharpens throttle and steering while the sportiest mode, Unbridled (groan), ramps the response up even further. Each setting also has its own volume level for the fake “engine” noise that Ford pipes into the cabin, which is more of a low-pitched thrum that actually sounds pretty good ��� better than the usual spaceship-like low-speed noises that most automakers rely on. You can turn it off if you don’t need to pretend you’re driving something nonelectric, though.
The First Edition before me has an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles from its 98.8-kWh battery, but Michigan’s cold ambient temperatures have sliced the onboard computer’s estimated range down to 220 miles and driving with a heavy foot can bring that number down even further. While the battery can accept up to 150 kilowatts of charging power, a trip to a 50-kW charger delivered just 35 kW of max power, requiring a whopping 45 minutes to add about 18% of juice.

For a bit of context, EPA range estimates vary from 211 miles on the low end, representing AWD variants with the standard-range 68.8-kWh battery, to 300 miles on the high end, which covers big-battery versions with rear-wheel drive.
Impressive tech abounds in the Mach-E and it’s obvious from the first glance at the dashboard. The standard 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster focuses only on the most pertinent information, limiting itself to a speedometer, range estimates and the current gear. Enabling lane-keep assist or turn-by-turn directions will add those to the screen, as well, but everything has a distinct place and is easy to reference with a quick glance. It will also change its background in different vehicle modes, which is a fun little touch.
I sincerely hope that Ford puts this screen — and this system — into as many future vehicles as possible. It’s really, really great.

The real meat and potatoes of the Mach-E’s cabin tech comes from the honkin’ 15.5-inch portrait display centered on the dash. It’s running a modified version of Ford’s Sync 4 system, so it’s responsive and easy on the eyes, with both light and dark motifs available. The top half of the screen is devoted to a single thing, whether it’s a navigation map or audio info, while a series of tiles just beneath allows for quick swapping between various corners of the system, and you can see it all with just a quick glance away from the windshield. Climate controls are at the bottom and, while I miss having physical switchgear for these, the touchscreen controls are easy enough to use at stoplights. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Waze integration are all included, as is a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot running on AT&T’s network. Charging comes by way of two USB ports (one Type-A, one Type-C) per row.
There’s one part of the central display that deserves an award, though. There’s an incredibly powerful settings menu that’s accessed by hitting the Mach-E in the top left corner of the screen. Unlike most menus of this kind, which just sort of expect you to know what everything means, each setting has an information icon that, when clicked, gives you a plain-English explanation of what the various modes or settings do. It’s little things like this that I love and I’m sure people new to the EV experience will also appreciate a bit of handholding to ease the transition.
Mustang Mach-E interior
While some parts of EV life might take some getting used to, the Mach-E’s interior proves that some electric-vehicle benefits are easy to live with. A lack of mechanical bits under the body means there is so much space on offer and it’s only enhanced on my tester thanks to a glass roof that makes the cabin feel quite airy. Usable space is everywhere, with two levels of storage (including a wireless device charger) just under the screen, in addition to sufficiently deep door pockets, another cubby under the armrest and a trunk that, despite the cut roofline, is deep enough for a family’s worth of golf clubs or groceries.
There’s no such thing as having too much storage space.

The Mach-E’s interior is mighty pleasant, with supportive front seats that aren’t so tight as to be uncomfortable for more Rubenesque occupants. The fabric interior trim is a lovely touch that zhushes up an otherwise straightforward and sorta-plain dashboard design, and I like that the same trim also covers the speaker housings to bring it all together. I’m hopeful that some of the hard plastics on the A-pillar and lower center console of my preproduction tester are upgraded before reaching buyers, because those parts don’t really feel at home on a car that starts at $43,000. Second-row occupants are in luck, too, because that coupe-ish silhouette doesn’t impugn much on headroom and there’s plenty of legroom available, to boot.
If anything, the closest connection between the Mach-E and the actual Mustang is the exterior design. The coupeover roofline and the fat rear haunches would look just as appropriate on a regular ‘Stang and the rear taillights are pretty much plucked straight from the real deal, albeit with new protuberances that bridge the visual gap across the tailgate. The front end’s “grille” bears a slight Mustang resemblance, as do the headlights, but worry not — with a new Mustang generation on the horizon, something tells me the differences between EV and pony car will dwindle.
While I believe that some connections to the actual Mustang do exist, the Mach-E is more of a grand-touring-focused EV that can be a little sporty when it wants. Considering its price range, which starts around $43,000 and tops off near $60,000 for a First Edition, that seems like the right place to be. Yes, hardcore variants like the GT are on the way, but as it stands, the Mach-E also offers daily usability in a way that most Mustangs don’t. I think the Mach-E is a sign of great things to come from Ford — not only for its most precious nameplate, but for every future EV the automaker produces.

LOS ANGELES—First things first: I'm pretty sure no one, not even Chevrolet, expects you to buy a 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS like the one I took possession of for this test-drive review. Chevy built this car to show off a gaggle of the dealer-installed options it sells so buyers can really make their Camaro their own special thing. I won't give you the full list of those add-on parts here—I'll do that down below at the end of the story, in case you're that hungry to see it and need to skip ahead now—but I will tell you the accessories ranged from functional (Brembo brakes, $3,645; lowering kit, $1,970; upgraded anti-roll bars, $805) to form-enhancing (racing stripes, $625 and $450; carbon-fiber shift knob, $150; black fuel door with carbon-fiber insert, $280).

But I liked everything else—the ground-effects kit, red and black stripes, and those big red Brembo brake calipers. I even dug the metal pedals and the embossed floor mats. I must be turning into a dealer shill in my old age.
2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Test: Muscle Car Theater It's been ages since I've driven a Camaro, and I was happy to be back behind the wheel, even if it meant I couldn't see much of the world outside through the gun-slit windows. The Camaro's 455-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 is everything it's cracked up to be, a bellowing beast always up for a good time. My tester had the $995 dual-mode performance exhaust which perfects the soundtrack. In terms of power and fury and noise, Chevrolet has the 2020 Camaro SS so well dialed-in, it could probably capture the experience and sell it in bottles.
Though the 10-speed automatic has been around for a little while, this was my first time trying it, and my experience was marred somewhat by the paddle shifters. Response was all over the place: Sometimes the transmission shifted as soon as I hit the paddle, and other times I felt like I was waiting on the Chevrolet's electronic bureaucracy to process my request, which I had apparently made in writing and sent third-class mail via riverboat. (For the record, I saw more immediate response from the push-buttons in the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban I drove recently.)
I thought the transmission did a much better job when left to shift on its own, but can I really say that with any authority? The 6.2 has so much torque, it's just not possible to be in the wrong gear. Chevrolet could probably fit an old THM-400 three-speed automatic to this engine and it'd still maintain its ability to ra-arrange your internal organs with a mere tap of the accelerator.
2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Test: Do Accessories Help Or Hinder The Handling? As for the handling, well, it's hard to say. In some of the sharper, lower-speed turns, I found the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS used for this test had a tendency to understeer on turn-in (which could be a factor of the "upgraded" anti-roll bars, or merely the fault of my own impatience). Alright, no problem—ease off of the accelerator to let the front end bite. But if I got back on the power too quickly, the rear tires would break loose. (That 455 lb-ft is a mixed blessing.) You have to be judicious with all of the power, which I'm told is the way the world generally works. On the other hand, if I didn't have to ease off the power in the first place, I could get out of the corners much more neatly.
The Camaro felt happier in faster corners, perhaps because I wasn't as close to the tires' limit of adhesion, but at higher speeds the car hits the bumps a lot harder. That was a constant problem, even in more relaxed driving: The Camaro's ride was unusually busy and bouncy, and while it did cushion the bumps rather nicely, I know these roads well and don't recall there being quite so many of them.
The bottom line here is that GM's chassis engineers do wonderful work, particularly with rear-wheel-drive performance cars. Messing with success only ends in tears, and I think the modified Camaro I drove proves that. Is it worth upsetting the Camaro's handling balance to give it that cool ground-hugging look? That's up to the prospective buyer.
2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS Test: Should You Accessorize? And that brings us, quite neatly, back to the first premise of our story, all those dealer-installed accessories. Do they make the Camaro a better car? Obviously, chucking everything you find in the pantry into a single pot will never make the ideal meal, but selective use of ingredients can yield something really great.
The point Chevrolet tried to make with this car, I believe, is that if you want to customize and individualize your Camaro, you needn't leave the comfort of your dealer's showroom. I am inclined to agree. None of the accessories on my test car rattled or buzzed. Everything fit nicely. I'm sure somewhere in the parts catalog it says, "Engineered by GM to fit your GM car," or something to that effect, and if it doesn't, it should.
As for the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS, well, what else can I say? It's an over-powered, hairy-chested handful of a car, and long may it ride. In its unmolested form, I think its handling betters Dodge's Challenger, though the latter is easier to see out of (as are most things, including windowless rooms). Personally, I prefer the Ford Mustang GT for its tidier dimensions—provided you fit it with the V-8, that is. (The EcoBoost four is a great engine, but give me that V-8 rumble any day.) I find it just as much fun and potent as the Chevy, sort of the scrawny-but-cut street fighter versus the mountain-sized bouncer that is the Camaro.
At the end of the day, no matter how you accessorize it, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS delivers all the muscle-car theater you could possibly ask for. And if you ask for more, Chevy is happy to have your local dealer install it.

Will time show that 2019 was the year the electric car broke through? There’s certainly been no shortage of new products using battery power, from the Porsche Taycan and latest Nissan Leaf to the impossible-to-ignore Tesla Cybertruck.
Combine these new cars with an improving charging infrastructure and you’d expect the tide of public opinion might start showing signs of softening towards EVs. That was certainly the case according to our own research, which revealed that the number of consumers who consider themselves as likely to own an EV in the next five years jumped to 26% in 2019, up from 15% in 2018. This is most likely just the start, too: Who would bet against that number having grown significantly by this time next year?
Back in the world of internal combustion, my honorable mention for 2019 must go to the latest generation of Porsche 911, the 992. Not only does it masterfully update the legendary 911 format for this hi-tech age with its fabulous interior and ultra-sleek exterior, but in terms of performance, the 992 moves even the basic, non-GT or Turbo models firmly into supercar territory. In fact, if I had to narrow down my automotive highlights of 2019 into just one, fleeting moment, it’d be the surreal three-point-something seconds it took our four-wheel drive, PDK-equipped 911 test car to fire from 0-62 mph.
Electric vehicles might be coming, but internal combustion is still more than capable of taking your breath away.

I’m struck by the number of performance wagons and SUVs we saw introduced in 2019. Fans of the Audi S4 Avant rejoiced when the German automaker revealed it was bringing its RS 6 Avant to North America. It packs a 4.0-liter V8 that makes 591 hp and 590 lb-ft, hits 60 mph in about 3 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 189 mph.
Just as exciting was the introduction of the RS Q8, a performance SUV packing the same power as the RS 6 Avant. We had a chance to take a closer look at the 2020 RS Q8 at the 2019 LA Auto Show, and it adds plenty of features aside from the engine, like 23-inch wheels and an RS-specific gloss-black grille.

And in the EV space, electric trucks took center stage: Bollinger brought us a production-ready version of its B2 electric truck, Tesla unveiled its unique Cybertruck, and Rivian gets closer to its production-ready model of the R1T. But are truck shoppers willing to make the switch from gas-powered to electric? It’s hard to say. In our yearly Truck Sentiment Survey, we found that 70% of shoppers were willing to switch brands, which is good news for these startup truckmakers. However, their high prices may keep shoppers away.

With one colleague celebrating electric vehicles and another performance wagons and SUVs, I feel obliged to mention one 2019 highlight they didn’t: Ford’s live-streamed debut of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E just before the LA Auto Show. Ford’s decision to put the name and badge of its mighty Mustang on an electric crossover generated controversy, of course, but a pony-equipped vehicle with up to 300 miles of range, usable seating for 5, almost 60 cubic feet of cargo room, and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4 seconds sounds great to me.

But my 2019 highlights came from two automakers CarGurus has found compelling for years, Mazda and Subaru, in the form of strong new versions of proven models. The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 earned rave reviews from almost everyone who drove it, including George Kennedy, and the updated 2019 CX-5, which we sampled in the snow at the end of last year, also earned praise from a wide variety of reviewers.

A new version of our favorite Subaru model also arrived in 2019. We got a chance to drive the 2020 Subaru Outback back in September and enjoyed it quite a bit. The new edition of this wagon/crossover finally offers a turbocharged engine under its hood, which drivers living at high altitudes should particularly appreciate. Our recently published review of the 2020 Outback found it strong from functionality and cost-effectiveness standpoints, which we consider hallmarks of the Subaru brand.

This time of year, everyone’s talking about electrification and progress and the hot new thing. But as anyone with their eyes open can clearly see, 2019 was the year of the throwback.

First, Chevy resurrected the Blazer as a stylish, sharp, and sexy crossover complete with nearly $1,400 worth of 21-inch tires. Sure, the new 2019 Blazer had its detractors, namely those bemoaning its lack of off-road performance, but I, for one, welcome our new crossover overlords.

Finally, the highlight of the year for this writer was the long-awaited return of the Toyota Supra. Partnering with BMW gave the new coupe a brilliant Bavarian heart and soul (or engine and chassis, for our more literal readers) to pair with its stunning exterior styling. Sure, the 2020 GR Supra’s interior might feel a bit familiar, and the lack of a manual transmission will cut it off some enthusiasts’ shopping lists, but it’s safe to say that no other car on CarGurus’ 2019 test-drive review roster received as much attention at gas stations, grocery stores, race tracks, or anywhere else we drove it.

Although the Mercedes-AMG GT4 bears a superficial resemblance to its GT3 sibling (read our 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT3 review here), the differences are profound when the two are parked side by side. Every exterior panel on the GT3 except the roof has been tugged and tweaked and transformed in the pursuit of ultimate aerodynamic performance. The massive rear wing looks like it was stolen from a small aircraft. Near the tarmac it’s all splitters and skirts and venturis. The GT4, by contrast, is like a road-going Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro that’s been to boot camp. There’s a bigger rear wing that’s thrust higher into the airflow, a more aggressive front splitter, and 18-inch center-lock forged alloy wheels, but otherwise it looks remarkably like the road car.
Don’t be deceived.
There’s a lot of real race car in the Mercedes-AMG GT4, even though it shares its light and extremely rigid aluminum space frame with the GT R Pro and has the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. The massive steel brakes, for example, are the same as those fitted to the GT3, as is, apart from the input shaft, the six-speed sequential shift transmission. The rollcage is different from the GT3’s, but the general layout and execution of the cockpit is the same as in the pro-league Mercedes racer, as is the FIA-certified carbon safety seat. One feature offered in the GT4 you can’t get in the GT3: an optional full race passenger seat. Thrill ride, anyone?
There’s just one seat in the GT4 being fettled by the Mercedes-AMG mechanics in the pit garage at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz this cool Friday morning, however, and it’s all mine. Mercedes-AMG team and development driver Thomas Jäger runs me through the finer points of the car as I adjust the position of the pedals and the steering wheel, and fiddle with the six-point safety harness.
Although the twin-turbo V-8 under the hood can develop north of 600 hp in road car trim, the GT4’s motorsport-style neural network, which allows finer settings for the ABS, traction control, transmission, and engine mapping, means the engine can be set to pump out anywhere between 400 hp and 510 hp, depending on the balance of performance regulations under which the car is racing. Our car has about 430 hp, which, according to Jäger, is typical for its current balance of performance rating in the GT4 class. That means the 3,064-pound racer (it weighs 231 pounds more than the GT3) has a slightly worse weight-to-power ratio than the 577-hp, 3,539-pound GT R road car. The plus side is the engine is thus relatively understressed, which is why it can run an impressive 25,000 racing miles before Mercedes-AMG recommends a full rebuild.
Jäger admits the six-speed sequential-shift transmission was an expensive choice for a GT4 racer, but it works better with the racing electronics, is easier to set up at the track, and is more durable, able to be run for 7,500 miles before a major rebuild is recommended. That the GT4 has less downforce than the GT3 is visually obvious, but there’s also less mechanical grip, too—though both cars roll on 18-inch wheels, the GT4 has slightly narrower tires front and rear, and its production-car-based suspension less able to be finely finessed in terms of setup.
Lausitz’s early-morning curfew lifts, and I roll down pit lane. The tires, fresh out of toasty-hot blankets, are warm, but the track is cold, as I discover when the GT4 suddenly snaps and spins as I accelerate out of the second corner. Embarrassed, I cruise back to the pits so the mechanics can give everything a quick once over. Jäger gives a no-big-deal kinda shrug when I start apologizing, and simply suggests I switch the traction control back to its most aggressive setting until everything gets warmed up.
The first couple of laps are tentative, but then I start to get into a groove. A lion of an engine in AMG’s fastest road cars, the growling twin-turbo V-8 initially feels to be more of a pussycat in the GT4. It’s perception rather than reality: With up to 442 lb-ft on tap from about 2,000 rpm, the engine’s a torque monster that arrives at the rev limit without any apparent effort, making the GT4 seem slower and more relaxed than it really is. And although it might not have the weight-to-power ratio of the GT R Pro road car, the fact the GT4 is carrying about 475 pounds less is patently obvious though corners and under brakes, where it feels much more agile and alert. That said, the GT4 moves around more than the GT3, is busier under brakes, doesn’t dive for apexes with the same intensity, and the traction control and ABS interventions are much less subtle.
The $220,000 (plus tax) 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT4 is an excellent package for those wanting to make the first step into proper sports car racing. It’s not just quick and entertaining. It’s a car whose performance can be readily accessed by drivers with a range of abilities, a car that enables them to hone their skills in preparation for the step up to a full-on GT3 racer. Or to simply race for the fun of it, enjoying the challenge of driving a high-performance car faster and farther than would ever be possible on a public road. With the added thrill of wheel-to-wheel action, of course.
No factory race car is cheap, but the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport ecosystem makes the GT4 a cost-effective package. During the car’s development, prototypes completed more than 37,000 miles of race testing on 10 tracks in Europe and the U.S. and ran a 30-hour endurance test at EuroSpeedway Lausitz, so those 25,000-mile engine and 7,500-mile transmission rebuild intervals should be legit. And the Mercedes-AMG Customer Service Portal ensures plenty of car prep know-how and technical support is available for privateer teams.
In addition to the GT4-dedicated European Series Northern Cup and European Series Southern Cup, the Mercedes-AMG GT4 is eligible to compete in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and the Pirelli World Challenge in the U.S., the Blancpain GT Series Asia, and the Australian GT Trophy in Australia. The car is also eligible for races in the global 24H Endurance Series as well as the nine-race VLN Endurance Series at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.
