isn't one of the reasons of not having free agency supposed to be for parity? if everyone chose to go to whichever team they wanted to, wouldn't that make it like a mickey mouse league similar to the wsl or french league where it's the same top 3-4 teams and predictable outcomes? just wondering since the reason why i preferred nwsl was because it's like you never know which team will win. one day portland beats everyone and is at the top of the league, the next day they're getting knocked out by angel city. or gotham going from worst to first. the parity and unpredictability makes it exciting to watch. just curious

It is 100% presented as the reason but parity shouldn't be more important than player rights. Not to mention that it's completely possible to have parity in a league that has the same player rights players in Europe have.

The big difference in European leagues is largely caused by certain teams investing more and having way better facilities. If Brighton invested the same and had the same quality facility for the women as Arsenal does top players wouldn't all go to Arsenal. Look at Lyon in France, are they a big team in the men's league? Hardly, they are currently in last place. But they do invest in women's football so players want to play there.

In Europe this is hard because you're connected to a men's team. One of the major things the NWSL could actually do as an independent league is dictate how much teams are required to invest (which also includes a cap so no team can out buy the others) and what kind of facilities are required before joining the league. Basically make teams equal instead of having such a difference between teams. The NWSL never did that which is one of the reasons why them claiming that being an independent league is such a massive advantage, is complete bullshit.

Also, i recently showed how many different winners the NWSL had compared to the WSL, it's just this year with Gotham winning that the NWSL has had more different winners than the FAWSL since the beginning of both leagues in 2013/2014. Yeah the NWSL is more unpredictable in games, but the end result is that it's usually the same teams who win the league. In recent years parity in the NWSL has increased, but the truth is that the NWSL is increasing parity by consistently violating player's rights while they could have both if they just cared enough.
