50 Films You’ve Got to Watch
Hi to anyone who’s reading,
I thought I’d take a break from the fashion posts to ramble on about something else that I’m really interested in for a hot minute. And I say ramble with intent, because I do go ON.
The topic is film and I thought that I’d make a list of my 50 must watches. These are movies that I feel had the biggest impact on me which means, yes, I do have tattoos referring to a couple of them, lol. My genre of choice is usually horror and although there has been a bit of a “horror renaissance” and a shift towards prioritising good quality storylines over jump scares in recent years, on the whole, they typically aren’t the most highbrow films out there, so there aren’t THAT many on this list. Most of the horror films I listed are just genuinely good quality rather than a straight-up gorefest or anything too terrifying, however, I’m not that easily scared so if you did fancy watching any of the films I mentioned, take that with a slight pinch of salt!
Also, this isn’t anything to take too seriously. I really like movies and cinema but I’m also not a movie critic and this is more of a hobby than something I want to pursue. Like, I’m completely aware of how unrealistic working in TV or film is as a career if your family isn’t loaded. Very aware. Painfully aware you could say (imagine me sighing as I’m writing this). That being said, part of me does want to do a ranking of every film I’ve seen in 2019 at some point this year, so if anybody else is interested in this kinda thing let me know!
Lauren x
50 Films You’ve Got to Watch:
1. Black Swan (2010)
“I felt it. Perfect. It was perfect.”
I watched Black Swan years ago now and I still remember how disturbing I found it and how exciting that was to me. I was probably a bit too young (young enough that my mum felt it necessary to cover my eyes during the Natalie Portman/Mila Kunis sex scene, lol) but even then I could recognise that it was a beautifully haunting film and Darren Aronofsky has gone on to be one of my favourite directors.
2. Jennifer’s Body (2009)
“And now, I'm eating your boyfriend. See? At least I'm consistent.”
Engrave it on my tombstone: JENNIFER’S BODY DESERVED BETTER. I fully believe that if this movie was released in 2019, it wouldn’t have faced half the criticisms it did back in 2009. It genuinely was ahead of its time. Megan Fox? As a boy-eating, demonic cheerleader? And Amanda Seyfried? Some of the most ICONIC DIALOGUE EVER? It should’ve invented a GENRE. Instead it got paid DUST. Yes, when I write in caps lock, my internal voice is YELLING. I feel passionately about this, okay?!
3. La La Land (2016)
“I guess I'll see you in the movies.”
Again, maybe it’s a basic film bitch opinion to have but I adored La La Land. I saw it at the cinema and spent the last 20 minutes of the film sobbing, only to find my mum and sister distinctly underwhelmed. I indignantly ranted back then to them how perfect a film it was and I’m going to do the same thing now so if you are reading and you didn’t like it, then you should probably just move on because I wouldn’t want to read myself banging on about Emma Stone again for several paragraphs either (don’t worry, I’ll try and keep it to one). I can’t help it. This film was just TOO REAL! Like, in every way but the actual plot and characters, La La Land has the dreamlike quality of a fairytale. The colours are rich and thick and always complimentary, the musical sequences are either like Disney songs or lullabies, and Emma and Ryan Gosling are made for each other. But then life and ambitions and resentments get in the way. And that’s the real part! That’s why it’s so bloody good!
4. Easy A (2010)
“People thought I was a dirty skank? Fine. I’d be the dirtiest skank they’d ever seen.”
And so we arrive at the movie that actually began my love affair with Emma Stone. Iconic. Iconic in every way. The bad reputation montage is cinematic excellence. For real, though, this is so underrated as a coming of age movie. Like don’t get me wrong, Mean Girls is everything (I easily could’ve included it on this list but I feel like it’s just a given that anyone who grew up in the noughties loves that film) but Easy A deserves just as much credit. It has Penn Badgley, one of the few celebrity males I care about! Amanda Bynes! Aly Michalka! Lisa Kudrow! Did I mention Emma Stone?
5. Kill Bill (2003)
“Now, if any of you sons of bitches got anything else to say, now's the fucking time!”
If I had to put any of these films as my singular favourite, it would probably be the first Kill Bill. Controversial, I know; even my dad introduced it to me as the weaker of the two. To list any Quentin Tarantino movie as the one that inspired you to want to be a director is probably a very cliche film student thing to say BUT I’m not a film student and I’ve put my directing pipe dream permanently to one side, thus, coming from me it’s not as hackneyed a statement. Or so I tell myself, lol. Basically, I was in awe of Kill Bill from start to finish. The colourisation is a dream, from the crazy 88 scene to the final fight between The Bridge and O Ren Ishii, and I particularly remember loving the animation sequence despite that not really being my kinda thing. I was just so impressed with how seamlessly something so out of place, considering the live action format of the rest of the film, fit in with everything else; even the scenes that should be absurd instead work with the comic book style narrative. Uma Thurman is of course amazing and iconic af but Lucy Liu as O Ren Ishii is my favourite thing about this film and the line I chose gave me all the bad bitch energy I need to, I think, get me through the rest of my time on this planet. If not, the tattooed version of this still I have on my arm should hopefully do the job. Yep, I truly ascended to a divine level of basic film hoe with that life choice.
6. Marie Antoinette (2006)
“This, Madame, is Versailles.”
The first Sofia Coppola film on this list, I love this woman’s work to death. Regardless of the content she’s working with, the end result always gives me the feeling I’m watching an extended music video. They always have this almost dreamlike quality to them and everything from the colour palette to the camera movements to the soundtrack in Marie Antoinette is tied together perfectly.
7. Mother! (2017)
“You never loved me. You just loved how much I loved you.”
I was tense throughout the entirety of Mother. As a socially anxious, obsessively tidy control freak, this whole film was like something from one of my nightmares; think unwanted house party on crack. I was mentally screaming along with Jennifer Lawrence for all of those people to get out, whilst simultaneously just staring at her face because she is so fucking gorgeous! Even when she’s completely lost it! Totally unrealistic but it makes for some really pretty shots! And then there’s the ending which left me kind of like “what the fuck did I just watch?” Which is what Darren Aronofsky films do best. They’re terrifying but also quite beautiful and Mother is no exception.
8. Gerald’s Game (2017)
“Everybody's got a little corner in there somewhere. A button they won't admit they want pressed.”
I finally got round to watching this for the first time the other day and I absolutely loved it. It probably helps that the last Stephen King adaptation I saw was Pet Sematary, so despite the praise this got at the time, my expectations weren’t super high, but I think this really is a perfect horror film. It’s clever, doesn’t rely on jump scares, and the creepy scenes that are in there really get under your skin. It drags a little in the middle though it’s beautifully shot, acted and has one of the few “body horror” scenes in a horror that’s actually made me cringe.
9. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
“I think that's what it's like with all our dreams and our nightmares, Martin, we've got to keep feeding them for them to stay alive.”
I don’t want to say too much about this film and spoil the plot, so I’ll just say that it’s incredible. Devastatingly sad but also wonderfully hopeful at the same time, and solidified my interest in psychology! I could watch Jennifer Connelly all day.
10. Alien (1979)
“This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.”
As a horror fan, I don’t think I need to explain why this film’s on the list. It’s been raved about and video essayed and called a pioneer of the genre ad nauseam. Again, not that this is really anything new but part of what I love about this movie is the context of its release and success; before Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal of Ellen Ripley, it was a rare occurrence to have a female protagonist in an action-based movie. Alien really paved the way for women to take up space in a previously male-dominated genre.
11. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
“Crazy is building your ark after the flood has already come.”
I saw this for the first time at the cinema and pretty much went in blind. I hadn’t seen Cloverfield but I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Final Destination 3 was always my favourite of the franchise, lol) and there wasn’t really anything else on worth seeing, so my sister and I chose this and it was an experience. Like, of all the films on this list, this is probably the one that had me most on edge and I’m not sure watching it on your laptop on Putlocker will do it justice. You need the curtains pulled to, the volume way up and complete silence.
12. American Psycho (2000)
“Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now, you fucking stupid bastard!”
There isn’t a dull moment in American Psycho. Every line is quotable and every scene is straight to the point. I feel like this film is a masterclass in that Stanley Kubrick quote about editing where he says he liked to get rid of everything that was not absolutely vital to advancing the plot or the audience’s understanding of the character in any way. Plus, the ending is trippy af! Or maybe I’m just a bit oblivious to something that was quite obvious throughout, who knows. Either way, what the final scenes really mean are fun to think about.
13. The Descent (2005)
“I'm an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider.”
Okay, so I literally just watched this the other day and had to begrudgingly remove Silent Hill to make space for it (I KNOW it was critically panned and I KNOW the video game is better but I liked the visuals, OKAY!?) because The Descent is truly one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen. Before we even get to the supernatural element of the creatures, which are genuinely creepy for once, there’s a party bag of other phobia-inducing sequences that had me emotionally exhausted within the first half hour alone. Claustrophobia, darkness, heights, actual cringeworthy body horror, The Descent has something for everyone. The way it utilises space (or lack of for that matter) and darkness and panicked camera pans makes you feel as if you are really down in the cave with the characters. To add to that, I was actually rooting for all of them too; it probably helped that they were English rather than the typical American slasher cast but I found them to be a believable and likeable group of women. I truly did want them all to get out alive *spoilers*, which only made the ending all the more devastating and although the general narrative is quite predictable, the way in which things get wrapped up left just the right amount of shocks and questions to leave you reeling.
14. Eighth Grade (2018)
“Gucci.”
No film has ever captured what it’s like having social anxiety during “high school” (it’s called secondary school here in England, I know, but you get me) better than Eighth Grade. A tribute to the feeling of never quite fitting in and wishing you knew how to do what everyone else seems to be able to do naturally, it encapsulates that awkwardness with an accuracy that is really impressive considering that 1. it’s Bo Burnham’s first film, and 2. he’s not...like...a 13 year old girl. It is just as funny as it is sad and Elsie Fisher is great and so, so believable. Girl should’ve won some kind of Oscar.
15. American Beauty (1999)
“I don't think that there's anything worse than being ordinary.”
I wavered on whether or not to include this film on the list due to the Kevin Spacey controversy and decided that I had to with the disclaimer that I watched it quite some time before the stories about him came out and won’t ever watch any of the new things he inevitably ends up doing (because Hollywood has a notoriously short memory when it comes to the actions of disgraced male actors, lol). You can’t deny the amount of talent and skill that went into making a film so graceful and elegant and yet in equal parts unnerving, and I don’t think we should refuse to acknowledge the achievements of everyone else on that set because of Spacey’s behaviour.
16. Bandersnatch (2018)
“The past is immutable, Stefan. No matter how painful it is, we can't change things. We can't choose differently with hindsight. We all have to learn to accept that.”
As I was watching/playing through Bandersnatch, I didn’t necessarily love it. I think I’m echoing a common sentiment when I say that I was kinda confused. I was desperately trying to *spoiler* avoid the option of the protagonist murdering their dad (he seemed like a nice guy!?) but somehow always ended up there by their logic. So I watched most of the endings and then I went on and busied myself for the rest of the evening. AND I COULDN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. One minute I was completely deluding myself into believing the whole parallel universes thing was true and that I should test it out (don’t ask), and then the next I was thinking how disturbing it was that we’d been basically been inside the head of a person experiencing a mental breakdown severe enough for them murdering their dad, who had only ever wanted to help when you think about it objectively, to seem rational. The confusion started making sense within the context of the experience of the protagonist and our role as the audience and though I hadn’t realised it at the time, I’d been completely absorbed in the episode. Maybe the confusion wasn’t intentional, maybe I’m giving Charlie Brooker too much credit based on the recent couple of series of Black Mirror BUT I can’t deny that Bandersnatch left a huge mark on me, and after all, this is the man who wrote White Christmas.
17. Get Out (2017)
“White girls. They get you every time.”
Going into this film, I was cocky. I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting what’s going to happen in things, probably just because I watch too much TV, but from the trailer I was sure I knew exactly what was going to happen. And then, I was completely blown away. The ending was SO SMART, in terms of both the within universe storytelling and also the metaphorical narrative/commentary on the way our society treats black men and women. Like those early episodes of Black Mirror, it had me like “how the fuck did Jordan Peele think of that!?”. I can only dream of being as creative in my writing one day. Even little plot points like where the “police” car turns up at the end and your stomach sinks and you realise the intention of that is most likely to help you empathise with what the average African-American person feels in their day to day life when police make themselves present, what with institutional police brutality and racial profiling; it’s clear so much thought went into this script.
18. Ghost Stories (2017)
“It's funny, isn't it? How it's always the last key that unlocks everything.”
I don’t have all too much to say about this one apart from that I love a well-constructed English horror. I feel like it’s something we don’t do all too often and to be honest, I’m struggling to think of many English horror films in the first place. Ghost Stories is a great example of why we need more; it’s smart and spooky and folky without hitting you over the head with all those elements and Andy Nyman is a perfect lead. Love a bit of Martin Freeman too.
19. Girl, Interrupted (1999)
“Crazy isn't being broken, or swallowing a dark secret. It's you, or me, amplified.”
Maybe this is the 13 year old black and white Tumblr girl in me jumping out but I still adore this film. I know it’s not necessarily the most critically well received but Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie and Brittany Murphy are 3 of my favourite actresses and I do love the script. I also like the way that Borderline Personality Disorder was characterised in Winona’s character Susanna (I’m wavering on whether to call her a character as if I recall correctly the book was based on the author’s real experience) in that it was quite subtle and that she wasn’t portrayed as manipulative, or aggressive or basically, as the villain, which I feel is usually the go-to. It focussed more on the mood aspects and the way that people with BPD tend to latch onto and idealise others, as Susanna does with Lisa, and these are both things that I have personally struggled with in the past.
20. Hereditary (2018)
“All I do is worry and slave and defend you, and all I get back is that fucking face on your face!”
It was hard to find a quote that encapsulated what makes Hereditary so great because so much of it is about what isn’t said, if that makes sense. It’s a lot of pained silences and resentful looks and horrified screams, and doesn’t that sound like a fun time? Honestly, it’s not necessarily, lmao. Shocker. It has you feeling like something awful is about to happen the whole time, deep in the pit of your stomach, but I like that in a film, when it does make you properly feel. Ari Aster gets slow-burning dread just right in his exploration of dysfunctional families and grudges, with a few heart-sinking shocks thrown in for good measure all without overdoing the jump scares. There are a lot of deeply unnerving “supernatural” moments but there are just as many horrifically realistic familial conflict scenes that give you that whole “something is wrong” gut instinct in equal measures. It’s been a year and I’m still so angry that Toni Collette didn’t get an Oscar nomination for her performance, because it was really the perfect opportunity to break down the invisible wall between horror and critical recognition. On a more positive note, I loved Midsommar too (not as much as Hereditary but it was still a trip) and I cannot wait to see what Ari Aster does next. Once again, I’ll be in the cinema on opening night.
21. Heathers (1988)
“Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count.”
Heathers is iconic in every way: the outfits, the cast, the lines. I mean, the acting can be a bit iffy at times but I honestly think that without Heathers, Jennifer’s Body might never have existed and that’s a world I wouldn’t want to live in. There was so much choice when I was picking a line to summarise why I like it so much and of course, “fuck me gently with a chain saw, do I look like Mother Theresa?” deserves an honourable mention. You almost made it bby. The TV remake? We don’t speak of it.
22. Hot Fuzz (2007)
“The way we see it, it’s all for the greater good.”
It might not be the “artiest” movie ever but I’ve seen Hot Fuzz so many times and it never gets old. Though I used to love it when I was younger purely for the PG-13 gore, now I appreciate it for the absurdity and the ridiculousness and to be honest, the total believability of the plot when it comes to towns ruled by low-key hostile, doddery old white people. I should know, I live in one.
23. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
“You probably heard we ain't in the prisoner-takin' business. We in the killin' Nazi business. And cousin, business is a-boomin’.”
I wish I wasn’t a hoe for Quentin Tarantino films (I’ve felt personally attacked by many a poundlandbandit starter pack) but I am. The breakneck pacing, the tongue in cheek dialogue and the gore all make this one of my ultimate favourites. Also, I have a huge crush on Melanie Laurent. Yes, it’s the French accent. No, I don’t know the mechanics of how that works. I hear someone speak French and I want to marry them! I can’t help it!
24. Ingrid Goes West (2017)
“Are you actually insane?”
This seems like a random choice to have on the list seeing as it was never really that hyped up, nor did it receive masses of critical acclaim. It did get positive reviews but that was about it. However, as soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I had to see it. Months, and an £8 purchase from HMV later, I finally got to watch Ingrid Goes West and I loved every moment of it. Whilst Aubrey Plaza’s character, I feel, is an exploration of a lot of young women’s insecurities and self-doubts and fears, blown up to monstrous proportions (or maybe just mine, lol), and a 90 minute film about that doesn’t sound all that revolutionary, this one is as intense as it is stylish and darkly comedic and that’s what puts it on the map for me.
25. Insidious (2011)
“I like to call them travellers.”
So this film scared the ever-living SHIT out of me when I was younger and though I now consider horror my favourite genre and watch it on the regular with absolutely no qualms, 13 year old me was (not to use the world lightly) mildly traumatised. I genuinely couldn’t be home alone by myself or sleep at night without thinking the old woman ghost from the beginning was outside my room for a good 6 months or so. Like it literally exacerbated an already present sleep disorder to the point where my understandably frustrated-at-being-woken-up-nightly-by-her-panicking-daughter mother got me referred for CBT (to reflect on a time when I didn’t know what CBT or CAMHS was is…blissful, lol). And maybe because of that, in my mind, I still conceptualise it as one of the very few horror movies that has actually scared me, hence its place on the list. That scene where we first see that Star Wars looking red faced devil? I’d probably still nope out even now.
26. It Follows (2014)
“It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you.”
There’s not too much to say about It Follows, other than that it’s a good horror film and more importantly just a really good film. I feel it’s a crucial, early part of this warmly welcomed horror renaissance we are now fully in the thick of where writers are focussing less on making people gasp and more on actual good quality cinema. It’s a simple concept that leaves enough room for you to ask your own questions whilst still feeling somewhat complete, and not annoyingly open-ended. The shots are good, the characters are normal enough to be believable, and the colour palette is Fincher-esque; the muted tones perfectly complement the feelings of dread that run throughout. Whilst you don’t need to be concerned with what the whole thing is a metaphor of in order to enjoy the film, the possibility of there being that second reading of the narrative, for me, elevate it to a higher level. In other words, it’s got *Shrek voice* layers.
27. Juno (2007)
“I'm just gonna go ahead and nip this thing in the bud. Cuz you know, they say pregnancy often leads to…you know...an infant.”
I love Ellen Page. I love Michael Cera. Together they are the best thing ever. See, I’m not really much of a rom-com girl but I see this as less of a rom-com and more of a coming of age film with romantic snippets and great one liners. It’s sweet and whimsical and funny but also really fucking real in parts, and it’s definitely what I would consider a modern classic. If you haven’t watched it already, do!
28. Suspiria (2018)
“Love and manipulation, they share houses very often. They are frequent bedfellows.”
Witches! Ballet dancing! Decapitation! Tilda Swinton! What’s not to love? As soon as I saw the trailer for Suspiria, I knew I had to see it. Creepy but also beautifully shot and scored, it was worth the 8 month wait from the Venice Film Festival and eventual caving and watching on 123Movies after I couldn’t find the DVD on Amazon; I finally got to tick it off my watch list only to like it so much I had to add the original Suspiria back on.
29. Mulholland Drive (2001)
“I hope that I never see that face, ever, outside of a dream.”
Another film which had me like WTF by the end, I really recommend Mulholland Drive for anyone who wants to be vaguely creeped out and extremely confused at the same time. See, I really love a film where you spend the next few hours after watching researching all the different interpretations and reading interviews with the director. That sounds sarcastic, but honestly, I love it. It’s a moody, film-noir style mindfuck of a movie and even after doing my research I’m still quite baffled. That’s the best part.
30. Requiem for a Dream (2000)
“Purple in the morning, blue in the afternoon, orange in the evening.”
It took me a while to get on board with seeing Marlon Wayans in a serious role (I’ve seen White Chicks far too many times, clearly), but once I did, I was into it. To be totally honest, I don’t think there’s a single happy moment in this film; it comes up quite frequently as one of the most disturbing of all time, which I’m sure Aronofsky probably thinks of as another notch on his belt. Whilst imo, that’s quite a grandiose claim, Requiem for a Dream definitely stuck in my mind after I watched it. Even if you’ve never watched the film, the ending sequence is notorious for how fucked up it is and I do think it’s earned the infamy. What stuck out more to me, though, was how purposeful every shot and sequence felt in terms of trying to let you into the character’s states of mind, the short lived bursts of euphoria and the panicked downwards spirals. I think it will always be one of the most compelling films about addiction for highlighting how terrifyingly out of one’s control it can be.
31. Room (2015)
“No one is strong alone.”
This film made me cry buckets. Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay are wonderful, and everyone involved deserved all the Oscar hype. Every line was so heartfelt and emotive, and I loved Tremblay’s voiceovers. To translate the stream of consciousness of a kid from page to screen in a way that it remains believable in spite of its wisdom (not like those tweets where people try to make out their kid just casually made some off the cuff scathing political jibe at the dinner table) is quite the feat and similarly, I’m in awe of how the director managed to communicate the pain and confusion of the characters on a level that transcended the physical confines of said room. The escape scene had my heart in my mouth. All this being said, I should really read the book because it’s supposed to be even better.
32. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)
‘When I'm around you, I kind of feel like I'm on drugs. Not that I do drugs. Unless you do drugs, in which case I do them all the time. All of them.”
Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are two of my favourite actors and so it’s a given that Scott Pilgrim is one of my favourite films. It’s such a fun, easy watch and the video-game inspired directorial style makes it, in terms of cinematography, probably the most memorable Edgar Wright film on this list imo. The concept, based on the graphic novel, is quite a simple one but that doesn’t stop it being entertaining from start to finish. The rest of the cast is great too: Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Mae Whitman, Aubrey Plaza and Alison Pill (Ivy from American Horror Story, anyone?) All make appearances, plus Chris Evans. He’s Captain America or something, right?
33. Scream (1996)
“No, please don't kill me, Mr. Ghostface, I wanna be in the sequel!”
The Scream movies were my absolute favourite when I was just getting into “horror” as a 13/14 year old because they were always pretty tame in terms of scares but nonetheless, always a trip. Though, controversially, I’d probably say I enjoyed Scream 4 just as much as the first one (I am a bit of an Emma Roberts stan), I chose the first one purely for how iconic it was and how ahead of its time. It mixed satire and horror in a way that hadn’t really been done in such a mainstream way before and made it possible for films like Cabin in the Woods and The Final Girls to do so well.
34. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
“Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil, sorry, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.”
I’ve seen Shaun of the Dead way, way, way too many times and I’ll still probably watch it again the next time ITV decide to show it too. It makes me laugh, it’s got lots of good gore and it’s easy to follow. The perfect film to put on whilst eating a take away, as long as you’re not too squeamish, lol.
35. Silence of the Lambs (1991)
“Well, Clarice. Have the lambs stopped screaming?”
Jodie Foster’s portrayal of Clarice Starling makes her one of my favourite movie heroines of all time; quietly courageous, she was the type of female lead that really hadn’t cropped up all that much in the films that came before Silence of the Lambs. And despite its problematic handling of certain issues, it’s a fucking incredible film. The thing about Hannibal Lecter is that they don’t have to tell you that he’s always one step ahead, you see it for yourself (the elevator scene!) and so it kinda feels like he’s looking into YOUR soul too. The confrontation at the end between Clarice and Buffalo Bill is one of the most nerve-racking 15 minutes or so of film I’ve ever watched, and if I ever get asked to justify why I’m scared of the dark again, I’m going to point straight to this scene. Yes, I’m a baby but my fears are VALID!
36. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
“I do this! Time after time after time! I do all this shit for other people! And then I wake up and I'm empty! I have nothing!”
As you can probably tell from my inclusion of Mother! on this list, I love Jennifer Lawrence, and this is probably my favourite drama film of hers. The way that she and Bradley Cooper portray two people struggling with mental illness is refreshingly honest in that it shows it can make you quite an unlikeable person at times, albeit someone who is just trying their best to survive. That being said, in spite of the subject matter it’s still a relatively light and easy-to-watch film. The diner scene in particular is a masterclass in realistic conflict and reaction, and I hate to be “ooo, edgy” but several of the lines did strike a really deep chord.
37. The Babadook (2014)
“Sometimes I just want to smash your head against the brick wall until your fucking brains pop out.”
The best thing that the Babadook does, much like It Follows, is instils a sense of deep seated dread in you before you even see the supernatural forces at work. The washed out colour palette, apparent emotional disconnect of Jennifer Kent’s (who also directs!) character, and the disorienting movements of the camera all help to create a lingering unease that is just as effective as the grossly uncanny appearance of the monster/ghost/creature/whatever-you-want-to-call-it himself. It’s obvious that Kent had a very clear vision of the story she wanted to tell and even more so that she is a very talented woman; I hope to see even more female directed horror films in the future if the Babadook is anything to go by. The way this film blurred the lines between the inner struggles of a grieving family and the outside supposedly paranormal influence was unsettling as fuck and to get into the psychology of a mother left on her own to raise a small child and how terrifying that might feel is something only a immensely intuitive and empathetic woman could do. Props to her.
38. The Craft (1996)
“We are the weirdos, mister.”
Not to sound all halloween-is-the-only-day-of-the-year-I-care-about VSCO girl (although that might actually be quite an accurate description of me to be honest), but if there’s one thing that sticks in my mind about the craft, it’s the aesthetic. It’s kind of what I aim to emulate in every aspect of my life, NBD. Seriously, when I was trying to pick a still, I was spoilt for choice. The rituals, the outfits, the witchy interiors; there’s this one GIF of Nancy, Rochelle, Bonnie (and maybe Sarah?) lighting all these gorgeous candles and if I could walk around with it permanently looping on my forehead, I would. And ignoring my shallow reasons for liking The Craft, it’s just a really good film. Nancy Downs is probably one of the most interesting female villains of all time and I’m obsessed with anything that explores magic and the occult. It’s equal parts dark and girly, not to use that in a derivative way at all, in that not only does it teeter on the line of being scary, it’s also a gritty exploration of female friendship, power and jealousy. If you are a halloween-is-the-only-day-of-the-year-I-care-about VSCO girl, definitely watch it; more power to you.
39. The Favourite (2018)
“All I know is, your carriage awaits and my maid is on her way up with something called a pineapple.”
I’d seen The Favourite twice within, like, a month of it being released in British cinemas and I do not have a single regret about that; well, maybe a minor regret in paying over £12 to see it in the Leicester Square Odeon with the assumption that the extra price meant fancy seats (it didn’t), but on the whole, I’m pretty happy with my life choices. Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and the period Mean Girls comparison drew me in but I came back the second time for the costumes, the dialogue, the editing and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Or Rachel Weiss, in other words. See, The Favourite is superbly casted in that Yorgos Lanthimos must have known we can’t help but see Emma Stone as the “good girl”/protagonist and so it took me a whole second viewing to see her character for what she really was, and realise The Favourite is in some ways less a story of Abigail Masham’s rise to power and more the tragic disintegration of Sarah and Anne’s relationship. I’m sure you can view the film both ways but to view it as the latter brings a whole new dimension to it and the ending, imo. I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t go into the film expecting some vaguely historical lesbianism and that definitely made for a slightly awkward birthday viewing with my family BUT I wasn’t at all disappointed.
40. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
“If you dig a hole in the yard, better make it a big one.”
This film is slow-moving, weird and the acting can be stiff at the best of times, and yet somehow all these things add to the (take a shot every time I say-) dread that builds throughout. You don’t know exactly how things are going to end, but you do know it’s not well. Like in his latest directorial entry of The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos excels in the realm of the strange and vaguely fantastical through his script, score and cinematography, and so even though the settings are quite mundane, The Killing of a Sacred Deer kind of feels like some macabre modern fairytale, the moral of which I can’t quite work out. I can’t imagine anyone playing Martin more unnervingly than Barry Keoghan and I’m never going to complain about Nicole Kidman, but it’s the imagery of the tears of blood, Steven’s children dragging themselves along the floor and the ending scene that stuck with me long after the film had finished. If you’ve got the patience and you enjoyed the style of The Favourite, there’ll definitely be something positive for you to take away from The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
41. The Orphanage (2007)
“Seeing is not believing. It's the other way around. Believe, and you will see.”
When I was first told by my year 11 Spanish teacher that we were going to be watching The Orphanage in class, I definitely didn’t foresee myself including it in a top 50 films list 5 years later and yet here we are. I mean, I shouldn’t have been surprised really as she did tell us it was good and I had frequently seen it included in lists of the best horror films but as with pretty much anything our teachers would put on as an excuse not to teach for a few lessons (I’m really NOT complaining here, they deserve the break and I would definitely do the same, lol), my expectations were definitely low. Side note, I also since found out that Bilbao seems like a pretty cool place and there was a reason she kept banging on about that too, and so moral of the story, teachers do sometimes have some decent recommendations BUT my assumption was that The Orphanage must be pretty tame for her to show it to us. Parents-even of 16 of year olds-love to complain, lol. And to be fair, it isn’t so much in your face scary so much as it is kind of tragic with an undertone of spooky but I really enjoyed it. I want to say that part of what I enjoyed about it so much was the mystery element but honestly I think a lot of that comes from the fact that it’s in Spanish so I had to work to follow what was actually going on.
42. The Ring (2002)
“I can't imagine being stuck down a well all alone like that. How long could you survive?”
The Ring does visuals better than any other horror. The contorted faces of Samara’s victims, the infamous tape and the shots of the well all have a staple in pop culture for a reason. Whilst I don’t find Samara herself particularly frightening, the lore and mythology surrounding her feels so authentically creepy; the tape in particular reminds me of the kind of weird YouTube video you might stumble across when you’re supposed to be trying to get to bed late at night and instantly hate yourself for watching. Naomi Watts is a compelling lead and though I was probably rooting for Sarah Michelle Gellar in the American remake of the Grudge more (I still low-key associate her with the live-action Scooby-Doo and I have no shame), to compare other noughties horror classics, on the whole The Ring is definitely the better quality movie.
43. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
“I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
The Shawshank Redemption is just an unequivocally good film. On paper, it doesn’t necessarily have any of the things that draw me to a movie in it, but it’s brilliantly acted, written and shot. It’s frequently cited as one of the greatest movies of all time and I think that’s a very fair statement.
44. The Shining (1980)
“Wendy? Darling? Light of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just going to bash your brains in!”
I love The Shining. In terms of scares, not all that much happens in it, but what we do see (the corpse in the bath tub is fucking horrifying) undoubtedly leaves an impact. The score is so unnervingly perfect that I can still hear the sound that’s made when we see those 2…puppets? Costumed people? Basically some kind of weird furry activity-which believe me, makes sense if you’ve seen it-going on. And I only need to see a still of the Overlook Hotel and I can immediately feel the sense of claustrophobia and growing tension that Stanley Kubrick so effectively communicated. A lot of people shat on Shelley Duvall’s acting at the time and whilst she obviously didn’t match Jack Nicholson’s energy, she did come across as a woman genuinely traumatised which is sad when you do consider the effect that shooting the film had on her. With that aside, The Shining is a massively pivotal part of horror history and I’m very excited to see Doctor Sleep this year!
45. The Virgin Suicides (1999)
“Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a 13-year-old girl.”
It really is a toss up between Marie Antoinette and The Virgin Suicides when it comes to Sofia Coppola’s best film, and so of course I had to include them both. See, whereas Marie Antoinette could be the visual incarnation of an album like Marina and the Diamonds’ Electra Heart or Charli XCX’s Sucker (if you ignore the less than fortunate ending, lmao), The Virgin Suicides plays out more to the tunes of something less bubblegum pop and more breezy and mellow, maybe LDR’s Ultraviolence or Honeymoon. You could say in a way that this film romanticises suicide and you’d definitely have a point, but I think considering the fact that it’s based on a book and was made in a time when we were less aware of the damage popular media can do (I think there’s a similar point to be made about the way the villain of Silence of the Lambs’s gender is portrayed and linked to his motivation), I give it a pass. It does also kind of make sense for the film to take this approach; the Lisbon girls are viewed through the eyes of a group of boys who are infatuated with them but also ultimately know nothing about them. In a way, it’s almost a critique of the way these boys think and a commentary on just how stifling and confusing young womanhood can be. I think it’s a beautiful film and a perfect adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel.
46. The VVitch (2015)
“Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?”
Is it sad that I have this quote tattooed on my back? Is it biased for me to say no? Because for me, just as much as the Virgin Suicides is about how stifling society’s expectations of young women and how they are supposed to think and act, The VVitch is about the demonisation of girls who go against this and how liberation and sexual freedom for so long were perceived as the result of some kind of satanic and deeply disturbing force at work rather than individual expressions of freedom and femininity. The ending is HAPPY, okay, and if you take away the misty, barren landscapes and the isolation and the paranoia and the baby eating witches and the accusations and the demonic goats, it’s kinda a dark feminist fairy tale to go against puritan panic. I mean, let’s be honest, *spoilers* Thomasin’s siblings were annoying AF. Not that I’m condoning child murder on any level, but you know. In a narrative context was it really so much of a loss when those little shits got the chop?
47. Thoroughbreds (2017)
“At the end of the day, I have a perfectly healthy brain. It just doesn't contain feelings. And that doesn't necessarily make me a bad person. It just means I have to work a little harder than everybody else to be good.”
I love Olivia Cooke. I love Anya Taylor-Joy. I love concise, cutting dialogue, the idea of middle class American social politics, and a little bit of (fictional, of course) murder thrown in there for good measure. Thus, I really love Thoroughbreds. If you watched it with the sound off, it’d be a Polo Ralph Lauren promotional film that gets really dark at the end, and what’s not to like about that?
48. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
“What are these people watching, people like me?”
I still haven’t got round to reading the book this film was based on and I feel like that’s something I need to get on top of ASAP, because it’s been sitting on my shelf for a long ass time. However, based on the little I know about how faithful a film adaptation it is, I think Ezra Miller and Tilda Swinton were a wonderful pairing, and this is a film that’s all about the characters, so it’s a good job they were so well cast. Miller does a great job at getting right under your skin and answering a lot of my questions about what leads someone to commit the kind of horrific crime that his character, Kevin, does. Arrogance, done subtly, is hard to pull off but he nails it, and Swinton is very, very believable as a haunted, grief-stricken mother wrestling with the natural question of the part she played in her son’s actions and the scrutiny that comes with it. Not only that but from the offset, every part of the cinematography helps to convey the feeling of impending doom that builds right up until the climax. The colour palette in particular, which for the most part doesn’t stray too far from the mundane greys and bleak washed-out tones perhaps reflective of Eva’s state of mind, does a great job of foreshadowing what to come when it quite purposefully does take a diversion. It’s all about the red, apparently. Take note.
49. Whiplash (2014)
“Any fucking moron can wave his arms and keep people in tempo. I was there to push people beyond what's expected of them. I believe that is an absolute necessity.”
You honestly wouldn’t believe that a film about drumming could feel like a horror and yet here Whiplash is, leaving me on the edge of my seat and wincing for, like, 2 hours straight. Tonally it couldn’t be more different from the other Damien Chazelle film on this list (La La Land), and yet it flows just as seamlessly and has his same impeccable rhythm; every word, yell and snarl slots perfectly into place and every swivel of the camera is flawlessly executed. If you’re looking for an intense and fast-paced drama, I can’t recommend Whiplash enough.
50. Zombieland (2009)
“Twelve's the new twenty. Gun please.”
Zombieland has only one fault: that Jesse Eisenberg’s character wasn’t played by Michael Cera. But it has Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson so I’ll let it slide. Not much to say about this one other than it’s a wild ride from start to finish, but simultaneously easy to watch and probably the most lighthearted zombie film out there. Almost like The Hangover or something along those lines, but with the addition of the undead. It’s a hard film not to enjoy and I’m just really hoping they don’t fuck up the sequel.

KICKOFF
January 3rd 2019 will mark my 40th lap around the sun. I am creating this blog to chart my journey and keep myself accountable. I have invited friends to follow me, strangers are also welcome. If it inspires anyone else, that’s great, but I’m mostly doing it to motivate myself. It helps if y’all follow b/c that’s how I will feel the pressure.
More of just the set up to cover in this initial post. Some stats and whatnot...
WHERE I’M AT
BODY:
I have an elbow injury that has been guessed (by the clinic doctor down the street) to be “tennis elbow.” This has been an issue for over 4 months now. I was lifting weights regularly before then for about 6 months and had seen some gains, but have since stopped and I’m sure I’ve lost whatever I gained by now.
I have been smoking cigarettes on and off for 15 years now. I’ve quit for a couple long stretches during that time (1.5 years, 9 months, etc.) and I just quit again on Jan. 7. Had one cigarette left and threw it away.
My body is not what an average person would call awful, but as you can observe for yourself even by the kindest rating system imaginable.. I’m a long way from what anyone would call “naked hot.” Also, putting my socks on is much more of a strain while wearing this somewhat new gut-filled body suit.
(This Exclusive Locker Room Photo captures the brutal honesty of where my body is at.. I have to look better at 40.)
I haven’t had a physical in 3 years. I’m always told my blood pressure is high.
I think that’s enough on body for the moment. I will get a physical scheduled as soon as I get my new insurance set up and let y’all know how that goes.
CAREER:
I have a good job as a film instructor at a college. I also manage the film equipment store for the film minors, but I do not have a “full course load,” so financially I’m still just getting by. But just getting by when you know exactly when your next check is coming is a much easier way to live than the just getting by in the freelance world I’d been doing for the past decade.
I also find the job to be rewarding in a variety of ways. I love the problem solving questions about scripts and storytelling film techniques. It really keeps my head sharp. It gives me a reason to go to the movie theatre (everyone should get MoviePass) and to see the interesting movies and to read books about screenplays and filmmakers and I stay in the loop on some of what’s “new” b/c college students know all the hip shit.
While teaching classes I’m also shooting and directing a documentary that started w/ me going to London for Christmas. I went to Germany for a day while I was over there too but.. oof.. not much good to say about that little jaunt. But the interviews I shot went well. Last night I heard back from one other potential interview subject that would be a big get for the film and he sounds interested but nothing is confirmed yet...
HEART/MIND:
I started meditating regularly some time in May of 2017. Attempting to meditate regularly is more accurate. My phone lost some of the data (I have been using the 10% Happier app, which I like) but I can guesstimate from what remains I meditated at least 600-700 minutes over 8 months. Not terrible for a beginner, but not terribly consistent either. I have started this year off by not meditating once yet :) At last, Consistency!
I regularly spend 30 minutes on the elliptical at least 4 days a week, usually 5-6. And I spend 15-20 minutes in the sauna which I love and mention in this section b/c I think it’s more of a mental reward I get from those things than physical. Somewhat evidenced by the fact that I have been doing that for a while now and it has not impacted the grossness of my gut at all.
I have been single for a year. I’m trying not to focus on that since I have other things I feel like I need to work on, but at the same time, I’ll always have other things I’ll need to work on, so I decided not to completely keep myself from meeting women. I don’t know many people in the area I’m living in and I’m surrounded by students (girls 20 years younger than me) and occasionally I meet another professor.. Students are an obvious no. But even trying to date someone at work on a college campus.. you must be insane.
I’ll spare the details but I’ve already heard some totally absurd horror stories and I’ve only been working there 3.5 months. So I rejoined a dating site last night and immediately spent way too much time on there. Probably more than I meditated all last year. So I’ll need to reel that in :)
FOOD:
I make/eat baked salmon with vegetables more than I eat anything else. I make quinoa with chicken and vegetables which I eat most days for lunch. Breakfast has been yogurt with muesli for the last several weeks, but I’m over that.. I’ve also probably been averaging about 2 or 3 apples a week. I’ve recently moved from coffee to green tea in the morning, but we’ll see how that pans out. I prefer coffee in the morning.
Now that all the good food has been noted... I still eat fast food cheeseburgers and fries (probably averaged 1 or 1.5 times/week.. maybe less), but also I’ve had more than my share of trash pizza from the chain pizza dumpsters across the street.
GOALS OR WHERE I AIM TO BE
BODY:
“Naked Hot” would be nice. But more specifically defined...
Weigh between 157-162
Flat stomach + at least 2 inches off waist
Elbow healed
11 months cigarette free
Blood Pressure under control
CAREER:
I won’t hang up when they ring me for the 3 picture deal. But, more specifically defined seems to feel good so...
Documentary completed and accepted into several festivals
Longer term job offer or Acceptance into MFA program
Feature film script being read by someone important
HEART/MIND:
First, I’m not gonna set any specific relationship goals b/c I think that's fuckin weird, but I would be happy to be in a relationship again at some point. And not just any relationship, I’m talkin bout a FLY Ass Bitch! Ha! Kidding. That said, “fly-ass-bitches” are welcome. But maybe just a relationship that isn’t criminally one-sided and doesn’t need to eat my entire consciousness and soul in order to live.. (Dangerfield voice) ...the last one was a little bit of a doozy. Hey! Can you tell?! Ha! Yeow. She got me good. - We’re really sharing and havin fun now :D
Meditate for 7,000 mins (avg of 20mins/day)
Maintain the elliptical and sauna stats (30/20mins)
Listen to more than 12 books
Finish Reading more than 10 books
So, thanks for looking at this, y’all. The rest of these will be MUCH SHORTER. Feel free to share any thoughts. And please share the blog w/ anyone and everyone you think might be interested. And good luck on your journeys!

How I Grew My Declining Google Traffic
When you look at the chart above, what do you see?
A site that gets a ton of traffic, right?
I am a marketer, so I should be somewhat decent at getting traffic… or so you would hope.
But here is the thing, just because I am decent at marketing doesn’t mean my Google traffic keeps climbing up and to the right.
Just like you, I face challenges.
I have ups and downs, I can also get penalized, and I have to continually battle algorithm updates.
When you are doing SEO, nothing is ever going to be perfect and it won’t always go the way you want.
My overall traffic growth
Let’s look at my overall Google traffic. Here’s my organic search traffic in January of 2018.
I had a whopping 743,744 visitors during that month. 550,607 of those visitors were unique.
Now if you fast forward to January 2019, my organic search traffic increased to 2,035,321 visitors. Of those visitors, 1,495,372 were unique.
That’s a 173% increase in search traffic in just 12 months.
Now you may think that it was easy for me to achieve those results because I’m a decent marketer. But just like you, it’s a constant fight to maintain and grow my traffic.
And in many cases, it goes down.
My decline in search traffic
Yes, you saw my search traffic from January to January, but let’s look at the dips as well.
Here’s my search traffic in October of 2018.
As you can see, I had 1,941,994 visits from Google of which 1,417,994 were unique.
Now when you fast forward to November, my search traffic went down to 1,799,837 visitors of which 1,347,775 were unique.
That’s a 7.3% decline in search traffic.
Sure, November had one less day than October and there was a holiday in the United States in November… but my traffic is global and NeilPatel.com is currently in 10 different languages.
In other words, there are holidays everywhere in the world every single month. Plus, the United States only makes up 23% of my total traffic.
And, of course, in December it got much worse, but I expected that as that happens each year.
As you can see from the graph, the last few weeks are really slow, but that is because of Christmas and New Years.
So, how do you know when your traffic is dropping?
If you don’t, you should start looking at your Google Analytics daily.
The one report I look at to make sure everything is going right is a week over week comparison.
The reason you want to look at a week over week comparison is that your traffic is going to fluctuate day by day. For example, Tuesdays are typically my highest days and Saturdays are typically my lowest days.
The last thing you want to do is compare a Saturday with a Monday.
As you can see in early November, my search traffic started to drop. In the first week, I saw a 4% dip.
And on Tuesday I saw a 6.94% drop in search traffic.
In the following weeks, the traffic didn’t bounce back. That’s when I knew something was off.
Now when you start to see traffic drops you shouldn’t panic. The first thing you should do is head over to this site.
It will tell you if there is a holiday somewhere around the world that could be negatively impacting your traffic.
The second thing you should do is check out Search Engine Roundtable, as they tend to cover more algorithm updates than anywhere else. They’ll even break down what people are experiencing and potential solutions.
Assuming your traffic did drop and it didn’t bounce up within a week or two, you need to start making changes.
The longer you wait the harder it is to recover your decreasing search traffic.
How do you increase your search traffic when Google keeps reducing your rankings?
9 out of 10 times when your traffic drops it’s related to your content. Whether it’s content on one page or content on your whole site it typically is content related.
The moment you see drops you need to login into Google Search Console and see if there are any messages.
Chances are, there won’t be any messages. 🙁
The next thing I want you to do is to click on “Performance.”
You should see a screen that looks something like this:
Now click on the date button above the graph. It should say “Date: Last 3 Months.”
Then click on compare…
Then enter the dates you want to compare on start versus end date. Make sure you select a 7-day period so you get the full picture.
You should now see a report that looks something like this…
I want you to unclick “Impressions.”
Then, I want you to click “Pages” and sort by “Difference” (the arrow should be pointing up).
This will show you all of the pages that dropped in traffic. These are the pages that lost the most significant rankings and, ultimately, your drop in traffic.
Next, I want you to click on a URL. You should start from top to bottom (you’re going to have to repeat this process for each URL with a massive drop).
Then click on queries and again sort by Difference.
Now before you do anything, scroll back up and click on “Position” in the graph. This will adjust your table and show you if your rankings dropped for any of those terms.
Assuming it did drop, I want you to do a Google search for that term and look at all of the sites that rank in the top 10 and compare your content with those that are ranking on page 1.
I know there are companies that offer software solutions that break down all of the keywords your competitors use on their page and it tells you what you are missing. I spent over $60,000 doing this in 2017 and it didn’t help boost (or even recover!) any of my rankings.
Instead, I want you to ignore all of the SEO software out there and just put yourself in the user’s shoes.
What do you honestly think of your competitors’ pages? Is their content better than yours? Is their design more user-friendly? Does their site load so much faster that it creates a better experience for you?
When you put yourself in the searcher’s shoes, it will give you an idea of what you need to fix.
I know I am making it oversimplified, but it really comes down to doing what’s best for the user. In most cases, that might be adding better images or improving your content because it isn’t up to date.
It’s not about keyword stuffing or having more words than anyone else. Heck, I rank higher than my old blog Quick Sprout for the same terms, with content that contains fewer words.
Just look at the term SEO. I’m on page 1 of Google for it:
Now let’s look at my SEO guide. It contains 10,244 words.
The Quick Sprout guide on SEO has 9 chapters and is a bit shy of 30,000 words.
Can you guess where the Quick Sprout guide ranks?
Middle of page 2.
The point is, it’s about quality.
That’s why most sites lose their rankings. Because other sites come out with content that is better for users. It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t have as many backlinks or that the word count is lower. In the end, Google focuses on user metrics.
Things like backlinks can help boost your rankings temporarily, but if the user metrics show that people hate your content once you are at the top, your rankings will drop.
This can’t be the case, my content is better and my rankings keep dropping
You might look at the steps above and believe your content is better but your rankings keep dropping. You might even talk to users and they agree and give you the same feedback. They think it’s better. So what’s going on?
The chances are your rankings dropped because of age.
Do you remember how my traffic dropped from October to November? Well, in November, I hired a few contractors to help fix my old content.
A lot of it wasn’t outdated and through surveying, we found people were happy with it. However, it just wasn’t ranking.
I had more backlinks than my competition and even more brand queries.
So, I embarked on a journey where I had a few people update my older content pieces. Sometimes they only adjust a few sentences and sometimes they rewrote entire paragraphs or sections.
That one thing grew my search traffic to 2,199,658 visitors over the last 31 days:
With over a billion blogs on the web, Google truly has its choice of deciding who to rank. There’s too much content to rank on the web, so when picking between 2 sites that are almost identical in SEO metrics, they are going to pick the fresh site versus one that hasn’t been updated in years.
Conclusion
No matter how good you are at SEO, you are going to see traffic drops. The key to seeing consistent growth year over year is to focus on the process I outlined above.
I know people still talk about backlinks and on-page SEO. But that is something everyone already does and you should be as well.
To truly stand out in the crowd, you need to put yourself in the searcher’s shoes and create the best experience for them.
And a simple thing like updating your old content will usually solve the problem and boost your traffic. 😉
So, how often do you update your old content?

Thank You (2019 Edition)
One of our yearly traditions here is to thank all y'all CSS-Tricks readers at the passing of a new year. It means a lot to me that people come here and read the words I write, and the words of all our staff and guest authors that contribute here as well.
Thank you!
Plus, we dig into the numbers this time of year. I've always tried to be open about the analytics on this site. Looking at them year after year always serves up a good reminder: niche blogging is a slow game. There's no hockey-stick growth around here. Never has been, never will be. The trick is to build slowly over time, taking care of the site, investing in it, working hard, and with some luck, numbers trend upward. This year, overall traffic didn't even do that. Sometimes you gotta fight for what you've got! Growth came in other areas though. Let's take a gander.
It was January 1st, 2019 that the current design of this site (v17) debuted, so this entire year overlaps perfectly with that. I'll certainly be tempted to release major iterations with that same timing in the future for comparison sake.
Overall numbers
Google Analytics is showing me 90.3 million pageviews, which is a bit of a decline from 2018 at over 91 million. A 1% decline. Not a big problem, but of course I'd way rather see a 1% increase instead. We'll take that as a kick in the butt to produce a stronger year of content to hopefully more than win it back.
Looks like we published 726 articles over the year, which includes link posts and sponsored links. A good leap from 636 last year and 595 the year before that. Clearly quantity isn't the trick to traffic for us.
I don't know that we'll slow down necessarily. I like the fact that we're publishing multiple times a day with noteworthy links because I like to think of us as a timely industry publication that you can read like a daily or weekly newspaper in addition to being an evergreen reference. I don't think we'll invest in increasing volume, though. Quality moves the needle far more than quantity for this gang.
There is a bunch of numbers I just don't feel like looking at this year. We've traditionally done stuff like what countries people are from, what browsers they use (Chrome-dominant), mobile usage (weirdly low), and things like that. This year, I just don't care. This is a website. It's for everyone in the world that cares to read it, in whatever country they are in and whatever browser they want to. We still track those numbers (because Google Analytics automatically does), so we can visit them again in the future and look historically if it gets interesting again. Taking a quick peak, however, it's not much different than any other year.
Performance numbers are always fascinating. Google Analytics tells me the average page load time is 5.32s. On my fast home internet (even faster at the office), the homepage loads for me in 970ms, but it's more like 30 seconds when throttled to "Slow 3G." "Fast 3G" is 8 seconds. Sorta makes sense that most visitors are on faster-than-3G connections since the traffic is largely skewed toward desktop. No cache, we're talking 54 requests (including ads) and 770KB (fits on a floppy). It's good enough that I'm not itching to dig into a performance sprint.
Top posts of the year
You'd think we would do a section like this ever year, but because of our URL structure, I haven't had easy access to figure this out. Fortunately, in March 2019, Jacob Worsøe helped us add some Custom Dimensions to our Google Analytics so we can track things like author and year with each pageview.
That means we can find things, like the most popular articles written in 2019, rather than just the most popular articles looked at in 2019 — regardless of when they were was written. Here's a graph Jacob sent:
Here's that list in text:
The Great Divide
Change Color of SVG on Hover
New ES2018 Features Every JavaScript Developer Should Know
An Introduction to Web Components
Where Do You Learn HTML & CSS in 2019?
The Many Ways to Change an SVG Fill on Hover (and When to Use Them)
Look Ma, No Media Queries! Responsive Layouts Using CSS Grid
How to Section Your HTML

CSS Animation Libraries
8.25% of traffic came from articles written this year. If you look at where these articles fall on the list of all URLs in 2019 (not just those published in 2019), the top article starts at #75! Hard to compete with older articles that have had time to gather SEO steam. This kind of thing makes me want to get re-focused on referential content even more.
Interesting that our top article was editorial, but everything else is referential. I like a little editorial here and there, but clearly our bread and butter is how-to technical stuff.
Search
There are two aspects of search that are interesting to me:
What do people search for right here on the site itself?
What search terms do people use on Google to find this site?
On-site search is handled by Jetpack's Elasticsearch feature, which I'm still quite liking (they are a sponsor, but it's very true). This also means we can track its usage pretty easily using the analytics on my WordPress.com dashboard. I also installed a Search Meter plugin to track search form entries. I can look at Google searches through the SiteKit plugin, which pulls from Google Search Console.
Here are all three, with duplicates removed.
Jetpack Search Data Search Meter Search Data Google Search Data 1 amazon (?!) flexbox flexbox 2 flexbox grid css grid 3 css tricks flex css tricks 4 flexbox guide animation css important 5 css grid svg css triangle 6 css flex position mailto link 7 grid guide css grid vertical align css 8 css important css css comment 9 the great divide border css shapes 10 css shapes background css background image opacity
There is a bit of a fat head of traffic here with our top 10 pages doing about 10% of traffic, which syncs up with those big searches for stuff like flexbox and grid and people landing on our great guides. If you look at our top 100 pages, that goes out to about 38% of traffic, and articles past that are about 0.1% of traffic and go down from there. So I'd say our long tail is our most valuable asset. That mass of articles, videos, snippets, threads, etc. that make up 62% of all traffic.
Social media
It's always this time of year I realize how little social media does for our traffic and feel stupid for spending so much time on it. We pretty much only do Twitter and it accounts for 1% of the traffic to this site. We still have a Facebook page but it's largely neglected except for auto-posting our own article links to it. I find value in Twitter, through listening in on industry conversations and having fun, but I'm going to make a concerted effort to spend less time and energy on our outgoing social media work. If something is worth tweeting for us, it should be worth blogging; and if we blog it, it can be auto-tweeted.
But by way of numbers, we went from 380k followers on @css to 430k. Solid growth there, but the rate of growth is the same every year, to the point it's weirdly consistent.
I also picked up an Instagram account this year. Haven't done much there, but I still like it. For us, I think each post on Instagram can represent this little opportunity to clearly explain an idea, which could ultimately turn into a nice referential book or the like someday. A paultry 1,389 followers there.
Newsletter
I quite like our newsletter. It's this unique piece of writing that goes out each week and gives us a chance to say what we wanna say. It's often a conglomeration of things we've posted to the site, so it's an opportunity to stay caught up with the site, but even those internal links are posted with new commentary. Plus, we link out to other things that we may not mention on the site. And best of all, it typically has some fresh editorial that's unique to the newsletter. The bulk of it is done by Robin, but we all chip in.
All that to say: I think it's got a lot of potential and we're definitely going to keep at it.
We had the biggest leap in subscribership ever this year, starting the year at 40k subscribers and ending at 65k. That's 2.5× the biggest leap in year-over-year subscribers so far. I'd like to think that it's because it's a good newsletter, but also because it's integrated into the site much better this year than it ever has been.
Comments
Oh, bittersweet comments. The bad news is that I feel like they get a little worse every year. There is more spam. People get a little nastier. I'm always teetering on the edge of just shutting them off. But then someone posts something really nice or really helpful and I'm reminded that we're a community of developers and I love them again.
4,710 approved comments. Up quite a bit from 3,788 last year, but still down from 5,040 in 2017. Note that these are approved comments, and it's notable that this entire year we've been on a system of hand-approving all comments before they go out. Last year, I estimated about half of comments make it through that, and this year I'd estimate it at more like 30-40%. So, the straight-up number of comments isn't particularly interesting as it's subject to our attitude on approval. Next year, I plan to have us be more strict than we've ever been on only approving very high-quality comments.
I'm still waiting for WordPress to swoon me with a recommitment to making commenting good again. ;)
Forums
There were a couple of weeks just in December where I literally shut down the forums. They've been teetering on end-of-life for years. The problem is that I don't have time to tend to them myself, nor do I think it's worth paying someone to do so, at least not now. Brass tacks, they don't have any business value and I don't extract enough other value out of them to rationalize spending time on them.
If they just sat there and were happy little forums, I'd just leave them alone, but the problem is spam. It was mostly spam toward the end, which is incredibly tedious to clean up and requires extra human work.
I've kicked them back on for now because I was informed about a spam-blocking plugin that apparently can do incredible work specifically for bbPress spam. Worth a shot!
Interestingly, over the year, the forums generated 7m pageviews, which is 7.6% of all traffic to the site. Sorta makes sense as they are the bulk of the site URLs and they are user-generated threads. Long tail.
Goal review
✅ Polish this new design. Mixed feelings. But I moved the site to a private GitHub repo half-way through the year, and there have been 195 commits since then, so obviously work is getting done. I'll be leaving this design up all of 2020 and I'd like to make a more concerted effort at polish.
✅ Improve newsletter publishing and display. Nailed this one. In March, we moved authoring right here on the site using the new Gutenberg editor in WordPress. That means it's easier to write while being much easier to display nicely on this site. Feels great.
☯️ Raise the bar on quality. I'm not marking it as a goal entirely met because I'm not sure we changed all that much. There was no obvious jump upward in quality, but I think we do pretty good in general and would like to see us continue to hold steady there.
❌ Better guides. We didn't do all that much with guides. Part of the problem is that it's a little confusing. For one thing, we have "guides" (e.g. our guide to flexbox) which is obviously useful and doing well. Then there are "Guide Collections" (e.g. our Custom Properties Guide) which are like hand-picked and hand-ordered selections of articles. I'm not entirely sure how useful those hand-curated guides are, especially considering we also have tag pages which are more sortable. The dudes with the biggest are the hand-written articles-on-steroids types, so that's worth the most investment.
New goals
100k on email list. That would be a jump of 35k which is more than we've ever done. Ambitious. Part of this is that I'm tempted to try some stuff like paid advertising to grow it, so I can get a taste for that world. Didn't Twitter have a special card where people could subscribe right from a Tweet? Stuff like that.
Two guides. The blog-post-on-steroids kind. The flexbox one does great for us, traffic-wise, but I also really enjoy this kind of creative output. I'll be really sad if we can't at least get two really good ones done this year.
Have an obvious focus on how-to referential technical content. This is related to the last goal, but goes for everyday publishing. I wouldn't be mad if every darn article we published started with "How To."
Get on Gutenberg. The new WordPress block editor. This is our most ambitious goal. Or at least I think it is. It's the most unknown because I literally don't know what issues we're going to face when turning it on for more than a decade's worth of content that's been authored in the classic editor. I don't think it's going to hurt anything. It's more a matter of making sure:
authoring posts has all the same functionality and conveniences as we have now,
editing old posts doesn't require any manual conversion work, and
it feels worth doing.
But I haven't even tried yet, so it's a don't-know-what-I-don't-know situation.
Again, thanks so much!
I was thinking about how stage musicians do that thing where they thank their fans almost unfailingly. Across any genre. Even if they say hardly anything into a microphone during the performance, they will at least thank people for coming, if not absolutely gush appreciation at the crowd. It's cliché, but it's not disingenuous. I can imagine it's genuinely touching to look out across a room of people that all choose to spend a slice of their lives listening to you do your thing.
I feel that way here. I can't see you as easily as looking out over a room, but I feel it in the comments you post, the emails you send, the tweets you tagged us in, and all that. You're spending some of your life with us and that makes me feel incredibly grateful. Cheers.

Wireframes: A Good Place to Start
7/30/2019

So in my last post, I was trying to figure out where to start updating this site!!! And I decided to start with wireframes by putting on paper what I think should be revised. Today I started to jot things down as I went through some of the webpages. It occurred to me that I have some images that are too big and in other webpages, there are just too many images. The site needs to be consistent and have a pattern so that the viewer does not get dizzy. When I created this website almost two years ago, it meant a lot to me-for some reason-that I had a lot of colorful images. Now I understand the purpose of images, but there has to be some form of organization.

Where Do I Start?

Where do I start? During the past few weeks I have been
wondering how can I take on such a load as revising this second
e-portfolio that I created because it has a lot of webpages. This
evening it occurred to me that I should put it all on paper through
wireframes like our good professor taught us. The thing about
wireframes is that the suggestions are to make them black and
white only so that we do not get attached to them: During the
process of creating and recreating wireframes we will throw a lot
of them out, but they can help me organize my thoughts and by
mapping out some ideas, perhaps I can see if it is what I envision
for the revised website. So that is what I am going to do next
before trying to make a lot of changes without a clear
organizational plan to follow.

Challenges with the images again!!!

I spent a good portion of the day trying to find a way to upload a selfie into this
website and my latest one. In the homepage there was a selfie embedded here
in the html, but it was not displaying: It has been like that for months now.
Anyway, I finally got around to fixing it. It turns out that the images that I tried to
use were in either google photos or facebook. The reason why I tried using the
images from these two sites is because I learned through hard labor and trial and
error and at the coaching of one of my favorite technology professors that in
order to embed and resize an image, we need to use an image that is on a
website so that we have a URL to embed! Well today I forgot about what I had
been through in the past and about my good professor's advice two years ago. I
found a couple of images on my cell phone that I liked, and I also thought it
would be very simple to upload them once I connected the charger to the
computer. The couple of times that I attempted this, the charger was not
working, and I did not know it. So today I used a different charger. But the
images I wanted still did not upload: As a matter of fact only a few of the images
uploaded into the computer. This is why I tried using images from Google
photos, and I thought it would work out well with the embed code because
Google photos gives me a URL for each image, but no not a chance! I did not
succeed! Neither did I succeed with the images of my self from facebook. I
suspect it has to do with the ending of the URL: None of the images I tried using
ended in jpeg, png or jpg. So perhaps that is the reason why after embedding the
URL in the embed code, the images did not display.
So how do you find an image of yourself that has an URL suited for embedding in
another website and the image actually displays in the other website? Well, you
go to another website where your selfie is being displayed and right click on the
image so that you can copy the link for the image. So that you can paste the URL
into the embed code that will display the image.

Embedding Code to Display Images

During the past four weeks, because I had a break from my face-to-face college courses, I was able to put some time in revising this website. Recently, I started to embed the code along with the URL for the image because it gives the webpage a more organized look, and it is more presentable. When you use weebly to create a website, you use a template, but to embed the code, first click on the embed box, drag in down and place it where the image is wanted. The code that I used is <img src="attached URL" width=size height=size /> So basically you will attached a URL that you copy pasted from an image on a website. Then you choose a size for the width and a size for the height then close the code. I found that embedding the above code helps me keep all images on the webpage the same size.

Finding Time to Revise this Site
1/3/2019

Ciao,
Well, the only reason why I finally found some time to revise this website and write some reflections is because right now I have winter recess from my face-to-face courses in college, and I am actually at work but have some downtime during my lunch break. It so happens that I have access to a computer, a desk and With the limited amount of time I had today to make revisions, I managed to figure out a way to place the images next to the text like my professor suggested during the final presentation of this website a little over a year ago. The trick to it is to first find the image online, copy image link, then drag the image icon on the web creator you use and place the icon where you want the image. Then you will click on image URL and paste the link you copied. Then you save it on your site creator by publishing it. Then you have to resize the image so that it is aligned with the other images on the same page. Once your image is the way you wanted and where you wanted, you then drag the text icon and drop it next to the image. Type what you want next to the image and move on to the next chore. Of course this works for weebly.com where you get a lot of aids: Coding from scratch is a whole different ball game.
During this rather very limited amount of downtime to get as much revising as possible, I considered doing without my previous educational background that was only centered around becoming a teacher because it really has nothing to do with what I am interested in doing for the rest of my life which is technology. But during this very resourceful day, I considered to include my earlier higher educational training under another field of study where I can showcase past and let recruiters see what I have accomplished. On the same website I can focus on accomplishments for the future.

Challenges to maintaining a site
8/19/2018

Ciao, It's been a long time since I submitted https//:mildredprofessionawebsite.weebly.com as a final presentation. The biggest challenge has been being able to maintain the site and make gradual but consistent changes as I move forward learning web design. While I am tending to my college courses and web design training, updating an already published site has always become part of the back seat of a car.
Honestly, this past spring semester, I dared to start a website from scratch using the techniques that I learned through my website design training. There were challenges bigger than I expected. The website only has a few pages, but I created it for the purpose of a final presentation which was informational for my professor and classmates. The research was about the use of technology or lack of it in Italy's public schools.
When I finished my little site, no one could see it just me because it was only visible on my computer. I did some research online and discovered I needed a host for my website which could be very pricey. I had to do more research and shop for an affordable host. After paying a small fee, I thought I was done and ready for my site to be visible to others. It turns out that each page on a website has to be uploaded into the site in order for others to view it. After the tech walked me through it over the phone several times, some of the pages would not upload.
When I thought the problem was solved, I typed the URL on my phone's tool bar and it kept giving me an error page. So I ended up calling the people that hosts my site quite a few times that night and then I waited two days to call them back because I was working a double the next day. I had to request an extension for the final project. Well on top of everything else, it turned out I needed a landing page which meant the page had to be saved under index.com.
Now this is one of those aha moments in which suddenly what my professor explained at the end of the HTML course I took online learning web design, and why she insisted that we create a webpage called index.com. So I already had the webpage; I just never used it!

It has been thirteen days since our final website presentation. It was done through videoconferencing in a Zoom platform. I am still taking to heart the revisions that I need to do because of the feedback that I got from my classmates.
Honestly I am enjoying making revisions because it feels the way it should be if I were doing this for a living. I would need to keep up with the times, changes and suggestions of readers and viewers.
It is my job as a web developer to facilitate for the surfer his/her experience of the site I create. One major criticism of my site was that it was taking too long to navigate through the internal pages and external pages. The reason for this according to my critic (classmate) was because there were too many pictures on the site and some of them were too big.
So as time allows, I am continuing the revisions and making adjustments to the size of the pictures. As I continue to pursue my training in web design, I have to be vigilant and open to criticism in order to provide the service that prospective clients and their clients will be pleased with.

Learning From Others Reluctantly
11/5/2017

Most of us refuse to accept advice from others: This starts when we are very little because we get fed up with everyone sticking their mouths into our business, and we want to think for ourselves without the rest of the world constantly getting into our heads.
Because this is the second time around that I am a graduate student, I have learned over the past few years to at least listen to the suggestions of others even if I cannot stand it.
So we had our final class for the course EST 567 in which we presented our websites to the rest of the class and our professor. About two or three weeks ago we had a Zoom conference, and some of us showed how far along we were with our websites. I got a lot of feedback from my professor and some from classmates. I took the suggestions and made a lot of changes over the past two and half weeks.
On our video conference this week, I got a lot of good feedback because they noticed how much time and work I put into to site since they last saw it. One of my peers gave me negative feedback, and even though another peer and my professor spoke against the negative feedback, the little yellow light in my head decided to listen to the suggestions of this peer who did not equally shower me with grace for my extensive work. He said I have too many pictures on my site and some of them are too big: This is why it takes the browser longer to upload the pages and external links.
Now honestly, I did not approve of his feedback, and I was not happy about it. I decided to make the necessary changes just to please the viewer. At the time, I really wanted to scream and give him a piece of my mind. But the further I get away from the presentation day, the more I realize that there is a lot of truth to what he said. I do not want this website to just be like many others that are very informational with hardly any visuals which would make it very boring. This website is about what I can bring to the table to a prospective employer. At the same time Mildred Professional Website introduces me as an individual and a unique person.
That being said, this does not mean that I cannot take criticism and use it to my advantage.

Thinking things through and following the advice of professors
10/27/2017

I learned the hard way to follow the instructions of the professors while I lived in Italy. I few weeks before we left for Italy, all students had to meet with some of the professors in a conference room so that the latter could warn us of obstacles and experiences while abroad. We even received an e-mail from a very nice student who had studied abroad. They all warned us not to bring heavy luggage with us on bus tours.
Well some of us did not listen. We were told to leave our laptops in storage until we got back from the 5-day trip, but we did not listen. We were told not to bring a heavy laptop with us, and again some of us did not listen.
So when we got to Venice after a very long day that started really early in the morning, we had to cross a small bridge that had steps. Those of us who had a heavy small luggage that was very heavy struggled a lot to get across especially the ladies. I was one of them. It took me so long to get across the bridge that I lost the group of students and professors I was with.
Lucky for me, I did listen to some of the instructions of my professors because I brought the address of the hotels where we were going to be staying. I asked a little boy for directions where hotel was in Italian, and he told me. I was out of breath and sweating, and it was already getting dark. An American lady heard us talking, and she asked me if I was looking for a group of students and she told me where they went.
Of course, eventually I found them. Could you believe no one noticed that I was not at the hotel the whole time I was lost-not even the professors.
Well Italy continues to teach me the value and respect I must have for my professors. To this very day my respect and appreciation for the professors continue to grow: When they tell me to do something or make changes to my school work, I listen and do what they say.

I came across other challenges: This time I was busy shuffling around images on a different page. Somehow in the midst of all that chaos of trying make the website good enough so that I could earn a good mark, I realized that moving the images is the hardest thing to do. It is much easier to move the text and put it next to the image you want.
Once again the experience of trial and error, I have learned a lot.

Ed. Note: Check out this Memphis nacho roundup article from Stacey, Editor of Edible Memphis, updated in time for National Nacho Day 2019 with a few new recommendations, too. Menus are subject to change. Call ahead to confirm your nacho order. When people think of Memphis, they automatically think of barbeque. Well, I’m here to change that. Below are several fine examples of why we need to start promoting ourselves as a nacho town! Autozone Park Stacey G. Let’s ease into this with a little barbeque talk. I think we can all agree that the Rendezvous BBQ Nachos at the Redbird’s games is what put us on the nacho map. Tortilla chips, Rendezvous bbq, cheese sauce, bbq sauce and jalapeños, if you like. Nothing goes better with a cold beer and a baseball game. Rendezvous Justin Fox Burks Speaking of the Rendezvous nachos at Autozone Park, they’re also available in the restaurant, naturally, but did you know they also have a pretty fine vegetarian nacho too? Brainchild of the Chubby Vegetarian, the rice and beans nachos include Brim’s chips, red beans and rice, cheese dip, barbeque sauce, and jalapeños. You won’t miss the meat. Really. Central BBQ Stacey G. C-BBQ takes BBQ nachos to the next level. They’ve got marinated slow-smoked pulled pork on a bed of tortilla chips topped with BBQ sauce, cheese sauce, shredded cheese (that’s right, TWO cheeses), jalapeños, and a light dusting of BBQ shake. Adventurous diners can substitute barbeque potato chips for the tortillas, and those who don’t like pork can order them with sliced beef brisket, pulled chicken or sliced turkey breast. Go on vegetarians and vegans, ask for them with the grilled portabella. It’s cool. And for those watching your waistlines or pocketbooks, half orders are also available. RP Tracks The barbeque tofu (yes, tofu) nachos at RP Tracks are legendary. In Memphis we even barbeque (and fry) our tofu. Dang it’s good! Tossed atop freshly made tortilla chips, black bean chili, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and jalapeños, it satisfies vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Vegans may also order it dairy-free. Ed. Note: These have been my favorite for a good long while. Tops The newcomer to the BBQ nacho party is Top’s, and they only have them at a few locations. There are two variations. The “loaded” comes with chips, beans, meat, sauce, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeños and sour cream. They also serve “regular” with just chips, cheese meat and sauce. I think the most exciting thing about these nachos is seeing what customers will do when given free reign. (Think cheeseburgers topped with barbeque meat.) I have already caught wind of a gal adding slaw. It is Memphis after all. Sweet Grass Next Door Stacey G. Next up, the king of all nachos. The Badass Nachos started as a secret menu item that was only available when the chefs at Sweet Grass Next Door felt like braising briskets or when there were major sporting events. Not surprisingly, it quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Sweet Grass now braises over 100 pounds of brisket per week. They cut and fry some corn tortillas from Tortilleria La Unica on Summer and cover them in red chili sauce (basically, an enchilada sauce), queso, sautéed onions and peppers, braised beef brisket, tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, sour cream, cilantro. Best off all? You can order them on a plate large enough to take a nap on! Carolina Watershed Another newcomer to the nacho scene, Carolina Watershed makes theirs with pork rinds, pulled pork, jalapeños, scallion cream, a provolone, mozzarella and parmesan cheese blend, and serves them with an egg on top – which basically means you can have them for breakfast. Bleu Bleu, inside the Westin Hotel, actually does serve breakfast nachos, at least on the weekends. Nachos Rancheros features eggs sunny side up, baked kidney beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, Monterey jack cheese sauce with jalapenos and homemade tortilla chips. Good morning! Slider Inn Slider Inn nachos are the gold standard in town, and really do taste better on the patio. They come in several varieties—chili, chicken or plain. Super thin and crispy chips are piled high with chicken or chili or both, black beans, shredded cheese, pico, sour cream and jalapeños. They are baked in the oven so the cheese gets a lil crispy, which is kind of the best thing ever. Now, listen up. Take these nachos to the next level in any one of these ways and thank me later: 1. Add guacamole. 2. Substitute buffalo chicken for regular chicken. 3. Substitute steak 4. Substitute falafel, and 5. Substitute the same al pastor meat they use for Taco Tuesday (dressed with cilantro, onion, pineapple, and salsa). I’m not done wowing you—half orders are also available. Tsunami Let’s move into some really fun territory. Asian nachos. Chef Ben Smith was inspired by longtime customer and friend, Margot McNeely, who came back from Puerto Rico raving about some seafood nachos she had. He decided to do his own version with fried wontons, seared tuna, crema, Sriracha, scallions and jalapeños. They are the perfect bite and definitely the lightest and most refreshing nachos there ever were. Wok’n in Memphis The Wok’n in Memphis Mongolian Beef Nachos get their Asian flare from beef. Fried wonton chips are topped with shredded braised Mongolian beef, bell peppers and onions, and finished with Sambal mayo, fried garlic, sesame seeds, scallion and cilantro. Look for them at the Puck Food Hall. Maciel’s Don’t leave Maciel’s out of the nacho party. Theirs come with crispy chips, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, carrots, cilantro, jalapeno, sour cream, chipotle, cheese and your choice of spicy shrimp, pollo tinga, asada, pastor, or chorizo. (Spicy shrimp! Spicy shrimp!) Ciao Bella Ciao Bella makes an Italian version of nachos that is pretty spectacular. They include sun-dried tomatoes, Bolognese sauce, Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, black olives, banana peppers, red onion, and tomatoes over homemade tortilla chips. Grecian Gourmet The Greek nachos at Grecian Gourmet are in the current weekly rotation, and it seems they get better every time I try them. Pita chips are loaded with meat sauce, feta dip, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, red onion and banana peppers. Also available to add to the party: gyro meat and chicken. Chef Tam’s Chef Tam has not one, but two (!) nacho options on her menu, and they are completely different. First up, the totchos. Seasoned fried tater tots are smothered with their Muddy Mac & Cheese, Applewood smoked bacon, pico and a drizzle of their signature sauce. (The Muddy Mac is already practically a meal in itself — It’s loaded with crawfish, crab and shrimp.) Second, the peach cobbler nachos–Chef Tam’s play on a Southern culture classic. Cinnamon sugar chips are topped with peach cobbler filling and cinnamon sugar dusted vanilla ice cream. Using the chips to scoop up the peaches, sauce and ice cream is like getting that perfect corner bite on a regular cobbler every.single.time. Babalu Babalu Tapas & Taco’s has stepped into the ring with a dessert nacho of their own. Chocolate Nachos consist of cinnamon sugar dusted chips, topped with Nutella and fresh fruit. What’s not to like? Adding a few more favorites… Inspire Community Cafe View this post on Instagram A post shared by Holly Whitfield (@ilovememphisblog) on Dec 26, 2018 at 11:45am PST Inspire Community Cafe in Binghampton offers comfort-food inspired home cooking with fresh ingredients. Go for their nachos with BBQ Chicken, black beans, roasted corn, veggies, and melty, cheesy goodness. Half Shell View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Half Shell (@thehalfshell) on Sep 1, 2017 at 7:49pm PDT The regulars at the Half Shell’s two Memphis locations swear by their giant plate of Baja Seafood Nachos, which pile shredded crab, blacked tilapia, shrimp, and melted cheese onto tortilla chips with all the fixings. Celtic Crossing Photo provided by Celtic Crossing For lunch, brunch, or late night, order a pile of hand-cut fries topped with corned beef and cheese at Cooper Young’s comfy Irish pub. Stix Stix serves up Asian fusion food, including a Japanese teppanyaki grill, sushi bar, and Mandarian menu. For their take on nachos, try these nachos with seared tuna, avocado, soy and spicy mayo. Stix has a location in the Collierville Carriage Crossing mall, and will open a location in downtown Memphis in late 2019 or early 2020. Huey’s View this post on Instagram A post shared by Huey’s Restaurant (@hueysrestaurant) on Aug 9, 2019 at 6:00pm PDT We all know about Huey’s and their burgers and loaded cheese fries, but what about classic nacho noshes? The casual chain serves up traditional beef nachos, when nothing but crisp chips, melted cheddar, ground beef and beans, and sour cream will do. What beloved nachos did we leave off this holy list? No need to throw your plate of melted cheese and chips at us, just let us know in the comments and we’ll check it out. Published August 2018. Updated November 2019. 2019 NFL preview: Bears will regress, but Mitchell Trubisky could help ease that
Yahoo Sports is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per weekday in reverse order of our initial 2019 power rankings. No. 1 will be revealed on July 31, the day before the Hall of Fame Game kicks off the preseason.

More
In almost every sport, we assume progress will be linear. That goes for teams and players. If someone has a breakout season, we talk ourselves into bigger and better things the next season.
That does happen on occasion, of course. Sometimes the sudden emergence we see from a player or team in is the start of something really big. But not always.
With that, let’s talk about the 2019 Chicago Bears.
[Join or create a 2019 Yahoo Fantasy Football league for free today]
The Bears were a great story in 2018. The fantastic preseason trade for all-world edge rusher Khalil Mack took the defense to a phenomenal level. The offense, with first-year head coach Matt Nagy, was fun and exciting. The Bears went 12-4 and while they lost a heartbreaking playoff game to the Eagles, the season was a success. And for the most part, people figure the Bears will pick up where they left off and maybe even get better. Players seem to figure that last season was just the start.
“Our goal right now for defense is to be No. 1 across the board,” safety Eddie Jackson told SiriusXM. “Like I told them earlier, shout out to the ’85 Bears, but we want to top everything they’ve done.”
Teams sometimes take a step back after a huge improvement, especially when the foundation of success is defense. A great defensive performance doesn’t always carry over to the next season. Football Outsiders Almanac said every one of the last 10 defenses to lead the league in FO’s DVOA per-play metric got worse the next season. One only needs to look at the 2018 Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings for proof that a great defensive performance is hard to carry over. The Jaguars and Vikings had the top two defenses in 2017, in some order. Both defenses were still good in 2018 but neither was top two in any meaningful category, despite few personnel changes for either unit. Each team won five fewer games in 2018. The Jaguars and Vikings made their respective conference championship games two seasons ago, and missed the playoffs last season. The margin of error in the NFL can be really slim.
There are other reasons to believe the Bears can’t repeat their nearly historic season on defense. They picked off 27 passes, and that’s very hard to do again. The Bears were the third luckiest team in the NFL when it came to injuries, according to Football Outsiders’ adjusted games lost metric, and injury luck is mostly random (and very important). Chicago should plan on a few more injuries this season. And the Bears defense took some hits this offseason, particularly at the top.
Vic Fangio was perhaps the best coordinator in the league last season, and we can’t just ignore the impact of him leaving to coach the Denver Broncos. His schemes were a huge part of Chicago’s success. Former Colts coach Chuck Pagano replaces Fangio. Defensive backs coach Ed Donatell and outside linebackers coach Brandon Staley left for Denver with Fangio. The Bears didn’t retain inside linebackers coach Glenn Pires or assistant defensive backs/safeties coach Roy Anderson. That’s a lot of turnover. Safety Adrian Amos and slot cornerback Bryce Callahan were big parts of the Bears success as well, and they both left in free agency.
The Bears won’t turn into an average defense. The Bears defense will still be good, but probably not as great as last season. They’ll need to improve in other areas to counter-balance that almost certain regression. And the most obvious way is through quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
Story continues
Trubisky is the wild card for the Bears. To some he’s still a raw and improving talent who showed real signs of progress last season, at least before a shoulder injury in November. For others, he’s too inconsistent and he hasn’t really shown upside like Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes, two future stars the Bears passed on to take Trubisky. Trubisky doesn’t profile as the type of quarterback who can carry a team by himself and be a top-five quarterback. But the Bears don’t need that. They need a quarterback who can make enough plays to support a defense that, while it might not be miles ahead of the rest of the NFL again, will be very good. For most of last season, Trubisky was that kind of quarterback. An improvement is certainly possible, given his relative lack of experience and draft pedigree. Having the innovative Nagy calling plays is a plus, as well.
The Bears were so much better on defense than any other NFL team, they could regress in a significant way and still be the best defense in the league. And perhaps the offense, with its young quarterback, improves enough to make up for whatever step back the defense takes. Chicago should feel it can be one of the best teams in the league again. It just might not look exactly the same as last season.

More
We won’t count the loss of Vic Fangio in the offseason grade, though clearly that is the biggest loss the team had. The Bears lost safety Adrian Amos and slot cornerback Bryce Callahan in free agency and replaced them with Ha-Ha Clinton Dix and Buster Skrine. The Bears probably got worse at both positions. Jordan Howard was a productive back but not a great fit for Matt Nagy’s scheme, and he was traded to the Eagles. The Bears signed Mike Davis and drafted David Montgomery, and those players are probably better fits. Those two, along with Tarik Cohen, make an intriguing backfield. Cordarelle Patterson gives the Bears’ return game a nice boost. The Bears didn’t have a first- or second-round pick; they gave up the first-round pick in the Khalil Mack trade and sent a second-round pick to move up in the 2018 draft for receiver Anthony Miller. Overall, it’s hard to say the Bears got better.
GRADE: C-minus
While there are reasons to believe the Bears won’t repeat what they did on defense in 2018, there’s still a load of talent on that side of the ball. Safety Eddie Jackson, cornerback Kyle Fuller and edge rusher Khalil Mack were first-team All-Pros. Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks finally got some due and made his first Pro Bowl. Others like middle linebacker Roquan Smith, defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and edge rusher Leonard Floyd have a lot of talent too. The Bears defense ranked at or near the top in practically every category last season. They stopped the run, rushed the quarterback, forced turnovers and shut down passing games at remarkable levels. When your foundation is a defense with this much talent, things are looking good.
OK, time to talk about the Bears kicking situation. That has been a story throughout the offseason, since the moment of Cody Parkey’s infamous “double doink” miss to end the Eagles playoff loss. Parkey was cut and the Bears can’t feel good about their candidates to replace him. The Bears brought in plenty of no-name kickers and none stood out. Eddy Pineiro and Elliott Fry are the last two standing, and unless you’ve followed the Bears kicking news closely, it’s likely you’ve never heard of either. Elliott came from the defunct Alliance of American Football, and Pineiro was acquired in a trade with the Raiders. Neither has kicked in an NFL game. This is a frightening situation for a team with big dreams, and the immense pressure and attention in Chicago surrounding the position won’t help.
If you want to tell yourself a story that Mitchell Trubisky is on the verge of a nice breakthrough, it’s not crazy. Trubisky was the second overall pick of the 2017 draft; he has obvious talent. He had only 13 college starts, so he needed more development time than many of his peers. He was with a coaching staff in 2017 that had no idea how to develop him. Then last season he was paired with Matt Nagy, in a complicated and new offense, and was doing well before a shoulder injury:
Pre-injury (10 games): 2,469 yards, 20 TD, 9 INT, 7.7 yards per attempt, 97.7 passer rating
Post-injury (4 games): 754 yards, 4 TD, 3 INT, 6.7 yards per attempt, 88.9 rating
You can explain the drop in play to the injury, and winter weather. Conversely, you can also say the numbers through 10 games were inflated by a six-touchdown game against a terrible Buccaneers defense. But mostly, Trubisky was fine in his second season. He added value as a runner, which has always been part of his overall package as a player. He could be more accurate and definitely needs to be more consistent, but if you believe that quarterbacks entering their third season should still be awarded a little bit of patience, Trubisky is on a positive path.
No need to waste anyone’s time here ...

More
From Yahoo’s Scott Pianowski: “When it comes to rookie wideouts, it’s important to remember the Class of 2014 (which went bonkers) was a gigantic outlier. Usually, it’s encouraging simply to see a first-year receiver keep his head above water. And Anthony Miller was able to do that last year, with a handy 33-423-7 debut. Considering Miller had a nagging shoulder injury, which required offseason surgery, that’s not a bad return.
“Miller was limited through offseason work, but should be fine for summer camp. We can’t draft him as an assumed fantasy starter, but there’s all sorts of plausible upside here; I love that he was comped to Doug Baldwin a year ago. Miller is merely being selected as the WR52 in early Yahoo drafts, around the 125th overall pick. He’s one of my favorite targets for a WR 4-5, an upside play that I won’t necessarily need to start Week 1. Keep an eye peeled on Miller in August.”
[Yahoo fantasy preview: Chicago Bears]
If you want another reason the Bears could regress, just look at their strength of schedule. The Bears had the second easiest strength of schedule last season, via Football Outsiders’ DVOA per-play metric. That changes dramatically this season. The Bears are projected to have the fifth hardest schedule this season according to Warren Sharp, who uses Las Vegas over/under win totals to estimate schedule strength. The Bears play four projected top-five opponents, tied for the most in the league, and seven top-10 opponents, and only the Broncos play more than that. The Bears could be just as good this season and not finish 12-4, given the massive shift in strength of schedule.
CAN A BEARS RECEIVER TAKE A BIG STEP?
Part of getting Mitchell Trubisky to the next level is his receivers stepping up as well. That group wasn’t bad last season, but it still seems there’s a higher level for at least three of them: tight end Trey Burton and receivers Allen Robinson and Anthony Miller. Burton was OK in his first Chicago season, but can improve off a 54-569-6 line. Robinson and Miller should be healthier. Robinson had 754 yards a year removed from a torn ACL. He said he’s feeling much better this offseason, and 1,000 yards seems to be a fair expectation. Miller caught seven touchdowns as a rookie but had only 423 yards. He was playing through a bad shoulder injury and had offseason surgery. He has exciting potential. It seems fair to assume Robinson has a bigger season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Miller and Burton did too.
We can at least imagine a scenario in which the Bears defense remains the best in the NFL, and the offense takes huge strides. Matt Nagy is a creative playcaller, there are talented players all around quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and Trubisky has the ability to make a big leap. We saw flashes of what Trubisky can be last season. While Trubisky doesn’t seem like he has the upside of being an MVP candidate (though he was the most popular bet to win MVP in Las Vegas this summer, mostly because of the long odds), he can be a good, productive quarterback. The Bears could make a big improvement on offense now that Nagy’s scheme has been established and there’s a good amount of continuity on offense. A 12-4 team with a lot of room to grow on offense has to be considered a preseason Super Bowl contender.
In 2016, an Oakland Raiders team led by Khalil Mack went 12-4. We expected the Raiders to be on the upswing, because we don’t figure on teams winning 12 games and disappearing right after. The Raiders haven’t had a winning season since, and probably won’t have one this year either. That’s not to say the Bears were a total fluke or will go the way of the Raiders since that one magical season, but it’s possible. Maybe Mitchell Trubisky doesn’t take the next step. Perhaps the NFL figures out Matt Nagy’s offense. The defense won’t fall off a cliff, but the 2018 Jaguars had a very good defense and went 5-11. When a team coming off four double-digit loss seasons in a row suddenly goes 12-4, there should be some skepticism about that team’s staying power.
I wasn’t going to disrespect the Bears by putting a Packers team coming off a 6-9-1 season ahead of them in these rankings. The Bears should get the benefit of the doubt, and the Packers have a lot to prove. But when we make our season predictions, I’ll probably pick the Packers to win the NFC North. There are too many regression factors for the Bears to ignore. I don’t think the Bears will completely fall off. Mitchell Trubisky will continue to develop and the Bears should get a wild-card spot. I just don’t think they will improve upon last season.

9 Digital Hospital Marketing Strategies To Find Today's Patients |
With urgent care centers popping up all over and clinics tucked in the back of pharmacies, patients now have more choices than ever when it comes to their healthcare providers. The same goes with hospitals. These days, many patients are becoming more involved in choosing a hospital for their procedures, relying less on a simple reference from their doctor. Hospital marketing strategies have had to change with the times, too. This form of modern healthcare marketing acknowledges that patients have a choice and helps them understand why they should choose your hospital group for their care. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
Why is hospital marketing so important?
It used to be that family and friends were the most reliable and trusted source of doctor and hospital recommendations, but now 89% of patients trust Google to answer their questions and recommend healthcare providers.
And then there is this: in 2017, the U.S. had 5,564 hospitals. In 2019, that number has risen to 6,210. That rise may not seem like much, spread as it is over two years and the entire country, but remember the ubiquity of urgent care centers and pharmacy clinics. Urgent care centers and clinics see millions more patients every year than emergency rooms do, and that gap is increasing every year. Simply put, there’s more competition out there.
You know your hospital offers high-quality care by your compassionate and experienced doctors and nurses. It’s time to use hospital marketing strategies that let everyone else know, too.
9 digital hospital marketing strategies to use
Here are nine digital marketing strategies to help you connect with your local patients.
1. Set clear goals
What are you trying to achieve with your healthcare marketing? Deciding on some goals before you begin is crucial.
You need to figure who your audience is and what they want and need as a part of this crucial first step. If your facility focuses on cutting-edge, world-class cancer treatment services, for example, your hospital marketing strategies might not include targeted ads for new mothers. Keep the message consistent and directed to those you want to reach.
And remember that patients are not the only ones watching. Physicians and other organizations (e.g. universities) are keeping an eye on your digital marketing efforts. If you are actively recruiting both patients and new team members, this is important to consider.
2. Focus your healthcare marketing on quality of care
Because Medicare now may reimburse on the basis of patient satisfaction, some hospitals are rolling out the red carpet and offering amenities that rival the swankiest day spa.
While this might be on-brand for your hospital, it’s not absolutely necessary in terms of how many patients choose you. More polling indicates that although a plush robe is nice, what patients really want is expert doctors and low rates of surgical error or complications.
3. Stay HIPAA compliant
No matter what hospital marketing strategies you use, make sure that your digital marketing efforts are HIPAA compliant.
This means protecting sensitive patient information and getting the proper releases whenever you use images or patient data (among other things!).
4. Be social
With millennials on the horizon about to overtake the Baby Boomers as the biggest generation in the U.S., the best marketing strategy for hospitals might just be to swipe right on social media. Millennials have $1.3 dollars in buying power annually, and they are beginning to enter hospitals as new parents. And because 85% of millennials have a smartphone, this is the most digitally connected generation ever.
Meet them where these patients are with the perfect social media campaign.
What’s considered perfect will depend on your goals, your audience, and what you want to achieve. Are you trying to be more connected to current patients? Are you looking to develop more partnerships with your community leaders? Make sure your social media campaign is authentic and focused on those efforts and patients.
Once you know what you want, consider moving beyond simple organic social media to localized social media ads or other tools for engagement.
5. Develop great content
Many hospital marketing strategies begin and end with a website that’s more than a few years out of date. Don’t make the mistake of treating your website as a digital version of the yellow pages. Create great content to engage patients and their families.
This could include:
Information on your services
Videos of patient testimonials
Videos of procedures
Blog posts on issues in your hospital or healthcare
Links to relevant articles and research
FAQ pages that might include actual patient questions and your team’s answers
Great content keeps patients on your site and engaged for longer (and “dwell time” increases your Google search rankings).
6. Don’t forget the facts
Make sure patients can find your facility with your thoughtful, well-designed, easy to navigate website that has complete contact information and easy-to-use directions. Claim your Google business page and use Google My Business for classes, events, or to introduce new staff. Prominently add information you know new patients will want, like accepted insurances.
Make sure all information is up-to-date, and place contact information on every page. If your hospital has multiple locations, use best practices for local SEO to differentiate one location from the other.
7. Get mobile, and get fast
Mobile devices account for 64% of all daily Google searches. Optimizing for mobile isn’t optional anymore. A page’s mobile responsiveness has a direct impact on their Google ranking.
Regardless of where the searches happen – on the go or at the desk – site speeds matter. You have about three seconds for your hospital’s page to load before prospective patients click away. Test your site’s speed and adjust if you need to.
8. Don’t neglect SEO
As with all digital marketing, hospital marketing strategies must include SEO.
SEO (search engine optimization) makes your website easy for search engines to read and, thus, easy for patients to find.
9. Get out into the community
Sometimes the digital tools just won’t cut it, and you need to go analog. Focus some of your marketing time, attention, and dollars on community health initiatives that address concerns in your hospital’s region.
This combines digital tools (asking for suggestions for health-related classes on social media) with IRL actions to strengthen your hospital’s relationship with your community.

What It's Like Dating SEO 2019
First of all, allow us just quickly define exactly what Localized Search Engine Optimisation (Local SEO) is. Local SEO will be basically the optimising your site to perform better within the particular search engines by allowing this to be found for your key phrases which relate to the region by which you're located. UnGagged London, uk is really a 2-day SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING & Digital Marketing conference the fact that takes place June 11-12th, together with one-day intensive masterclasses on Summer 13th. These ‘quality updates' are very reminiscent of Search engines Panda updates and often influence many websites at the exact same time - and often these types of concentrate on demoting similar ‘low-quality' SEO techniques we have already been told Panda focuses on. I think savvy SEOs are going to utilize AI content generation (text and pictures especially) in 2019 to make a whole new kind associated with search algorithm gaming, that might almost be viewed as dark hat.
