Aemond Targaryen never received a lot of attention as a child. With his father running the realm and his mother running after Aegon, no one ever had the time to invest in Aemond. A sad reality faced far too often by the noble children in King’s Landing. Because of the unfortunate family dynamics of the Targaryens, Aemond was, in some form, neglected. Of course, unlike many children across the realm, Aemond had privileges: food, clothes, hobbies. The one thing he lacked was motherly and fatherly affection, resulting in him being neglected emotionally. It’s interesting how someone could have everything, yet feel like they have nothing–perhaps it’s a lack of perspective paired with the longing for affection. 

Regardless, Aemond had trouble with affection in his adulthood due to his lack of such as a child. Sure, now Alicent wished to give her children the world, but she could never quite make up for the years she’d spent wandering court, continuing to be a pawn in her fathers games. One person, however, that was able to fulfill Aemond’s overall need for attention was his wife. Although an arranged engagement, the two clicked, making them an amazing couple. Perhaps at times their relationship was unhealthy–this is Aemond Targaryen to which we are referring to. But, in comparison to his other relationships, that of him and his wife was far healthier than any relationship Aemond had seen throughout his life. Y/N was one of the kinder souls that he’d met during his time at the Red Keep. 

Ever since the beginning of the war, however, they didn’t often get the time to spend together. With Aemond’s recent increase in responsibility, it had been very difficult for the two of them to spend time together. Unlike many couples in the Red Keep, the two of them shared a bed, meaning they got to see each other at the beginning and end of the day. Personally, nights were always Y/N’s favorite while the mornings were Aemonds. Y/N enjoyed the nights because of how, despite a hard day, Aemond was relaxed. After his day, even though a bit tense, he was ready to lay in his bed with his wife. Y/N loved this because of the stark contrast between the stiff shield he put up in public versus the tired mumbling and hugs. 

One night in particular, Aemond arrived in their room more tired than usual. He walked through their door, took off the many layers of leather, then walked towards his bed where his wife lay sitting upright against the headboard, book in hand. 

“Hello, love,” she says looking up slightly. 

Instead of replying, Aemond lets out a heavy sigh and lays across the bed, allowing his head to fall into his wife’s lap. 

“Excuse me, hey! I’m reading,” she laughs. 

Aemond looks up at her, removes the book from her hand, as well as takes the bookmark from beside her, and throws the book on the ground next to the bed. 

“Hey!”

He continues on, wrapping his arms around Y/N’s torso and pushing his head as far into her stomach as he could without hurting her. 

Y/N smiles and relaxes, accepting the fate of her book and her schedule for the rest of the evening. “Long day?” she asks. 

He hums in response and lets out a deep breath. 

Y/N runs her hand through his hair. Typically, half of it is tied back and also confined by his eye patch, but now, as they get ready for sleep, his hair is loose, crazily lying about his head. Arguably, this is the main reason she loved nights, having access to his hair with his arms wrapped around her is a blessing. 

As they are wrapped around each other, she begins to twist the pieces of his hair together, imitating many a hairstyle that her handmaidens helped her create on her own head. While the minutes passed on Aemond went into a kind of slumber, the kind where you can talk to someone and they will wake up not remembering a thing. 

Y/N continues until there are multiple braids throughout Aemond’s hair. Eventually, because of all the tugging, he awakens slightly and looks up at her. 

“What are you doing?” he asks. 

“Relaxing,” she replies. 

He then realizes that she seems to be playing with his hair. He starts to sit up a bit, making her lose her grip on some of the braids. “Stop fussing,” she replies, her voice soft yet strong, “I’m just braiding your hair.”

Aemond only grumbled before returning to his relaxing position. 

The two would then remain in their positions until eventually, Y/N would grow tired, shimmy down so that she too could go to bed.

Self Care 101 🦋

In this post I’ll be outlining my current routines as they relate to self care. I’ll cover everything from head to toe making sure not to skip your spirit. You cannot be a girl of ANYONE’S dreams if you aren’t taking care of the most important person in your world: you.

mornings:

wash face with gentle cleanser from curology, tone with organic Mamonde rose water and finish with rich moisturizer and spf30

brush teeth with activated charcoal toothpaste by Crest and baking soda for whitening and gum clarity

take vitamins : woman’s one a day, hair skin nails, biotin, vitamin c

drink glass of water then a cup of tea

black tea, raw cane sugar, a lemon slice, ginger

good for energy, immune function, and detox

showers:

this may sound so extra (😅), but depending on my hairstyle, I sometimes like to let the shower run for about five minutes with the door closed to create a sauna effect. this is especially if I have a mask on my hair.

my showers usually are about 20-30 minutes

I have a back brush, pink exfoliating gloves, a loofah, and tree hut body scrubs and I use them ALL.

I wash first with my dove beauty bar to assure clean skin before washing with EITHER my OGX Shea So Soft body wash or Dove Renewing Peony and Rose Oil body wash to add scent or silkiness to my skin.

hair removal:

I haven’t yet mastered the art of waxing myself so I’m still riding the shave wave. *when I do I’ll make a post 4 that*

I exfoliate throughly before AND after shaving

I shave my entire body using Tree Hut Shaving Oil and a nice conditioner I’m not using. This leaves my skin super soft and silky and helps the razor to glide without skipping. I use Gillette Venus. no less than five blades, anything less is ASKING for nicks and a hard time.

when I don’t feel like shaving, I use Nair. use at your own risk. yes, I Nair my ENTIRE BODY. only leaving it on for about 7 minutes I rinse in WARM (not hot) water and exfoliate afterwards. it is imperative to moisturize after to avoid irritation. however, Nair is much easier to do than shaving and seems to last an inkling longer.

after shaving, once a month, I pull out my KENZZI. it’s an IPL device and it has helped to slow the growth of my hair. it’s noticeable for us long, thick haired chicks. I use the second to lowest setting as a melanated babe, as the higher settings could burn me.

I know many endorse the hair on women movement and I can understand it. But I personally love my skin silky, hairless, and smooth.

nights:

after eating dinner, I wash my face and apply the tiniest bit of glycolic serum and my curology night cream. my skin has been the best it’s been in a few years. then I brush my teeth and rinse with peroxide.

every four days I give myself a facial

I apply a rich facial moisturizer and get to bed.

I then write in my planner my new plans and what I did that day if I hadn’t already. then after that I script and make mood boards in my diary. then I read a little. currently reading: Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, and Live Like a hot Chick by Jodi Lipper.

emotions:

I talk to my grandmother about my feelings, she helps me sort things out. please try to find one person you trust to talk to, my messages are always open. 💓 I often overthink. I suffer from anxiety and clinical depression. sometimes these things make me FEEL limited. these experiences wax and wane. I remind myself that the darkness is temporary.

I write in my diary what I feel and track my emotions for potential patterns. I don’t manufacture or sugar coat my feelings, I just talk.

sometimes you need a good cry. let it out. clean your slate. you’ll always feel better, sometimes great after a hard, deep sobbing cry.

I try to get out of the house and get some sunlight. it helps brighten my mood sometimes.

baths:

LOVE taking baths I don’t care what the status quo is about dirt. just rinse off. I love wrapping my hair up and soaking in warm-hot water.

first I run the water. as it’s running I add my bubble bath, then body wash, then my Shea Moisture fragrant coconut oil. it smells soooo good, literally yummy. then I inevitably scream from dipping my toe in the hot water. finally I get in, scrub down my body, emphasis on feet. then I wash, and just relax. I’ve even fallen asleep in the tub once, I was so zen.

careful not to soak too long or overdo it with your products. synthetic materials lingering in your lady bits for too long cause cause infections like bv or uti

some women add tea tree oil, acv, or even Aztec clay to their baths for wellness purposes. I love adding essential oils to my baths to relax and the natural scent is just great 🥺

when I get out I always put something that feels lush and soft on. *invest in super soft, comfy bath towels, they’ll make you feel so luxurious and soft after a nice relaxing bath*

flower:

the yoni is something sensitive that needs to be taken care of thoroughly, and differently than the rest of your body. it’s not recommended to use soaps down there, it can unbalance things and make you itch. also make you prone to infection. this is why I use clear warm water to clean. if I use soap it’s a sensitive, gentle formula. don’t ever try to clean the cavity. she’s a self cleaning vessel.

to shave, I trim my hair down as close as possible and use a FIVE BLADE razor with conditioner and take my time. making sure not to pass a spot twice, I apply moderate pressure and move slowly. when finished I rinse and scrub gently. I PAT not rub dry. to finish off I apply TendSkin, and salicylic acid to avoid ingrowns. once that’s soaked in I apply shea butter. very soft and pretty 🌸

⚠️ DO NOT PUT ON TIGHT PANTIES OR RIGHT PANTS AFTER SHAVING. it restricts the hairs and causes irritation and ingrowns. throw on some comfy loose shorts for a while, let it breathe

at home vagacial for the high maintenance girlies:

ah yes, my favorite part. I love fragrance so much. I love to smell like you could literally break off a piece of me and eat it.

I find that using fragrant washes and oils make your scent more strong and help it linger. I already mentioned the body washes I use. the tree hut scrubs I use smell amazing also. I alike to add essential oils and man made scents like strawberry and chocolate to my Shea Moisture oil (so yummy).

I also use a fragrant lotion, eau de parfum, and fragrance mist.

a banana, half an avocado, three spoons of honey, an egg, a spoonful of mayo, a spoonful of coconut, olive, and castor oil each

cover damp CLEAN hair and scalp in mixture and cover with a plastic bag, then towel for an hour, rinse thoroughly, and seal in moisture

helpful tips:

when shampooing, concentrate on the scalp and wash thoroughly twice, as the suds will naturally cleanse your stands without drying and stripping them

rinse hair with apple cider vinegar every now and then. it restores your ph balance, smooths the cuticle, clarifies the strands, and adds shine

always add oil and leave ins to DAMP hair, never dry; this will ensure you’re sealing in moisture

try to use smooth fabrics to dry your hair, bath towels encourage frizz and breakage

hands and feet:

and last but not least, let’s cover manicuring and pedicuring.

it’s super important to make sure your nails are either DONE or filed, shaped, and smooth. at home maintenance is super easy. make a point to scrub your hands and feet well when bathing. make sure to stay on top of your cuticles by trimming or pushing them back. I like the look that pushing them gives. I use an orangewood stick, metal pusher and cuticle softener to make the process super easy and safe. after I’m done I add my pineapple scented cuticle oil. I do this on my fingers and toes.

invest in a rasp and pumice stone for your feet and use these gently every two weeks after soaking them in warm foot salts. rough usage can cause cuts and irritation. in between treatments keep your feet soft by slathering them in a moisturizing foot cream, cocoa/shea butter then oil to seal it all in. buy some soft thick aloe infused socks and wear them to sleep. you’ll thank me 😉

The door to the roof was emergency access only. If you opened it, a silent alarm would go off in half a minute if you didn’t have the code to disarm it. This kept all the students from wandering. But the code that sat readily available on a bulletin board in the teachers lounge, didn’t stop them from wandering.

It was the best place to come for a smoke break. Hands down. Sure beat sneaking around the bushes in the back of school, and way more space than the janitors closet. Didn’t feel haunted like the basement did with all its rustling, moaning furnaces.

Billy pushed the door open and punched in the alarm code with his middle finger. Using the rest to clutch a reliable zippo lighter to his palm.

As soon as the door closed with a metallic hiss, and the light above the flat plastic box on the handle flicked to green, Billy was reaching into his suit’s inner pockets. Felt along the silk inside until he found the crinkled pack of smokes he kept.

Inside, the school’s prom was raging just fine. Billy had spent all night watching over it from the edge of the dance floor. Looking the other way as some dancers let their hands wander, as scared lips searched out for a romantic first kiss.

He had been to all his own back in sunny California, spent them doing a lot more than cute kisses pressed to shoulders.

The night brought back lots of memories of bruised wrists hidden by satin shirts, fast cars with wide back seats.

Billy lit his cigarette quickly, pulling until his lungs were filled to the brim with ash. With burning and black and red things that messed him up inside.

He exhaled the day from his lungs, but kept the ash. Let his eyes drift closed as he savored it.

From the other side of the roof he didn’t notice he wasn’t alone until it was far too apparently late. As his eyes fluttered back open, Billy followed the heated gaze on his skin. Turned until he found the farthest corner of the roof and the brick half-wall edge.

Firstly, he noticed the black suit jacket thrown over the brick. As if it weren’t expensive and the texture could ruin it. As if he didn’t care if it were to tumble off the edge to the ground.

Then Billy’s eyes drifted up along a smoke trail that wafted just above the suit jacket. A thin line of white smoke that lead back from over the edge towards a pair of pretty lips.

“Mr. Harrington,” Billy greeted.

The man just smiled. His lips holding that damn smoke curled around it like some blue-collared Cheshire Cat.

Steve, Steve Harrington, was the resident music teacher. His class room was underfunded and made of things he mostly brought in on donation. The children loved him, even if he was hardly over their own age, self-taught, and said crazy things like he didn’t believe in homework.

A large grand piano sat in the middle of his classroom. And Steve usually sat at it. At least, he did when Billy would find some excuse to come in and steal a glance.

Billy couldn’t get over those long legs kicked out, his dress slacks lifting up to show off his ankles. The sweater he wore that day, because he always complained about the old building being too drafty, pushed up to his elbows. And his moles. All the moles dotting up and down the back of his arms. Over his skinny, vein covered hands as they danced across the ivory keys of his grand piano.

Billy wasn’t blind. He knew he lingered too long and too obviously at Steve’s door for his own liking, but he couldn’t help it.

Between his melted chocolate colored sexy mess of a hairstyle and his vintage movie star good looks, Steve was something else. Effortlessly funny, and gentle with the firm understanding of a father. He was amazing to watch or simply be around.

And that smile, that wide real smile that reached up all the way to create crows feet next to his pretty brown eyes.

It took Billy’s breath away. It was, something else.

“Didn’t think you of all people would be skippin’ out on that shindig down there?” Billy kept his voice low. As quiet as the fading night around them. But his throat couldn’t help the gravel laughter that joined his words.

Steve shrugged. Lifting his arms to around his elbows so his whole body moved.

Steve turned and Billy noticed then that he must had been worrying at his long, coffee brown hair all night long. It had gone oily under his fingers. There were some strands coming free of how he had it pushed back. Mostly on the sides, right behind his ear, some were springing free. Reaching out for those mole covered cheeks like vines wanting to kiss. Curls of feather soft hair just out on display, and tempting billy to his edge.

The view off the side of the school roof was pretty, long lines of Indiana forests stretching below them. And the colors of the nights was a water color swirl of navy blue and royal purple twinkling with stars as they turned on one by one.

But, Billy was looking at the curly pieces of hair behind Steve’s ears.

“Just needed a break,” Steve spoke softly. “Headache. I don’t do well with lights and loud, loud music. I’ve had one too many concussions as a teenager.” And as he explained he chuckled. Like it was simply life and didn’t make Billy’s blood boil in his veins at the idea of Steve getting hurt.

But Steve just shrugged again. Flicking the butt of his spent smoke off the edge before he lit up another one. Trying to chain smoke away a headache.

“What about you, Hargrove? Thought you were enjoying enabling all those troublemakers down there?”

Billy whistled low. His shoes kicked up the tiny pieces of gravel across the roof as he walked closer to the edge. “That obvious?” He asked.

“Might of well have spiked the punch yourself,” Steve smiled, wonderfully wide and real, it made Billy’s heart swell up into his throat.

“Damn, I might get in trouble then,” Billy said in a laugh and an exhale of smoke. Mostly about the comment. Mostly about that damn smile.

He pressed his hip to the edge of the brick wall. Steve was standing a bit back away from it. His body turned to look out over the view. Billy didn’t want all that. Leaned back casually on the wall facing inwards as if they best view was Steve’s pretty face itself.

A minute of comfortable relaxation ticked by. Their senses going dark and black and burnt as they created a designs of clouds around their heads. Watching them gather and fade as the smoke cloud was too weak to carry rain. So it drifted up into the night sky to join the hidden mass of starlight under all the polluting lights of the school building.

Billy was stealing glances at Steve. Trying to make it not obvious.

Finally, Billy thinks he’s supposed to be the one to talk. He wipes his cigarette across the brick to make a line of black. Watches it for a second as he mutters, “What is he going to do? Fire me? Who else is going to teach these pipsqueaks how to understand poetry?”

“Good point, no one in their right mind actually enjoys poetry,” Steve shoots back.

Billy’s laugher from that is from deep in his chest. Rolling out through his ribs in a way he hasn’t felt tonight. In a way he wants to bottle and keep forever.

“Ya'know,” he starts slowly. Thinking about his words carefully. “I’ve got a bottle of aspirin in my desk. If that headache is still bothering you, Harrington?”

And Steve’s eyes flick towards him quickly. Searching the space between for any meaning to those words other than kindness. There’s a worry etched into Steve’s brows. And again, Billy’s griped with a certain anger for whoever put it there.

He gives himself a moment to think about it. Looking from between Billy’s face to the ground below them. Kicking his fancy brown dress shoe into the dirt.

“We’ve been away for a while. Really should be getting back?” Steve’s whisper is so quiet. Even he must know that ain’t an option.

Reaching forward, across the little space left between them, Billy brushes his hand across the slumped fabric of Steve’s jacket. He pets it once, twice, his fingers lingering on the well-loved softness that’s been put into the expensive suit, before he gathers it up in his fist. Lifting it from the brick so he can drape it over his arm.

He’s watching Steve the whole time. Wondering what the pretty boy is going to do about it.

“Mr. Hargrove,” Steve talks around the last puff of his cigarette. It’s tobacco burning bright orange to the filter before he flicks that one too over the side of the building.

Turning then to level a playful glare towards Billy.

“What’s another minute?” Billy scoffs. “Well, another 30 minutes?”

“We’ve got to get back!” Steve hisses. “If the principal notices they are down two chaperones then he will crucify us!”

“That’s a pretty poetic way of saying we’re dead if we get caught.” Billy laid his hand over Steve’s jacket. Pulling it so that it was on the other side of his body from Steve. So that if he had to leave, if he really didn’t want to take Billy up on his so generous offer of aspirin, he’d have to brush up along Billy’s side to fetch his jacket.

Crossing his arms back over his chest, Steve worried his bottom lip. Thinking, gears turning, under that head of perfectly disheveled hair.

Billy couldn’t help but follow the motion of his worrying. Swiping his tongue over his own bottom lip as he thought about how Steve’s teeth worked. How they brought the blood to the top layer of skin. How it looked cherry red and wet, as if it were stained from the punch bowl at the prom still dancing below their feet.

“20 minutes,” Steve haggled. His eyebrow quirking up in a challenge.

Billy shook his head. “Says right on the bottle takes 30 minutes to kick in. Wouldn’t want to take you back to the party still hurting, pretty boy.”

And he let that slip. That wasn’t supposed to come out. Billy’s eyes widened in reflex at his old behavior. If he could reach out and pluck those words out of the air he would. It wasn’t poetic, it wasn’t romantic, it wasn’t the best way to flirt with the music teacher he has been silently crushing on for the past year.

But then, he noticed that Steve didn’t pull back. Or sneer, or draw his sword in a one on one combat for the disgrace of his honor.

He kept standing on the roof of their school. Kept his arms crossed over his chest to combat the cold. His button up shirt pulled tightly across his broad shoulders.

Kept smiling under the glow of the moon and the artificial yellow lights dotting around them. And just like his Cupid bow shaped lips, his cheeks were flushed a brilliant red blush.

“Okay, yeah. Sure, Hargrove,” he stuttered out. Lifting one hand to wave towards the door.

Billy’s smirk was wide and wolffish, brilliant and happy.

He followed where Steve was gesturing. Opening the heavy metal door with a creaking groan of the hinges. Stepping aside to let him pass. Steve’s shoulder brushed along the fatty part of Billy’s bicep as he went

Down the steps they start picking up the quiet notes of the prom music still going on. Now that it was later on into the night, starting to become too late to be out, the music has mellowed out to softer love songs.

The staircase to the roof wasn’t decorated like the rest of the school. None of the red steamers or sweetheart pink balloons.

But as the gentle rhythm trickled up the steps, it sure felt like Billy was right back on that floor. And he had never felt it before the way he had now. When he was a kid he was a rebel without a cause. Driving fast cars and leaving hearts broken behind him.

Valentine’s days were always something to get done. To get to the end of so he could jump in bed with his prize.

Now, as the melody of the song so slowly so softly floated by, he finally was felling those butterflies.

Was thinking this is how it felt being a kid and timidly kissing the shoulder of your dance partner. Your heart so swollen and raw just wishing they feel the same way. That they will smile at your lame attempt to get their attention, and bend down to give you a real kiss.

Billy felt his feet stop at a halfway platform. A shiny metal thing that groaned dangerously under them. It wasn’t a dance floor. Wasn’t painted wood of a basket ball court either, but it felt like it. Gods, did it feel like it.

The song echoes all around them. Distorting the voices and pianos and making it ethereal in a way he didn’t want to ever end. A spell he never wanted broken.

Then, so gently it was almost startling. Almost made him jump from his vibrating skin. Steve sipped his hand into the one Billy was using to hold his coat.

Billy jerked to watch him. Thinking this was it, Steve had changed his mind and was going back to play babysitter for the rest of night like a responsible teacher.

“y/n come on get dressed nicely, we need to get to the restaurant!!” your mum exclaims (okay y’all i’m australian so we say mum instead of mom so no it’s not a typo). You groan and get up out of your warm comfy bed and dress up so you can go to dinner with your parents to see their friends which they haven’t seen in 20 years. Your mum said it was a super fancy place they were going so I needed to dress up to the tens. You take a quick shower and style your hair into a half up half down hairstyle, you slip on a pale grey flowy dress with lace sleeves which reaches a bit above your knees. You do a light layer of makeup and slip on your black heels. You looked dressed up enough for a fancy dinner and pretty nice if you say so yourself. Your family gets in the car and drives to the restaurant. During the drive, your dad tells you that their friends are permanently moving into the neighbourhood. Your mum also mentions their friends are bringing their son as well and that he’s starting at your school and that you should show him around. You scoff at that you tell them “he’s probably like way younger than me and annoying, so no thank you.” Your mum just rolls her eyes muttering to herself something about teenagers. The thing is you love your parents but they care about their social status a lot because your family was quite well off. It really annoys because you need to go to a lot of dinner parties and events. You were really sick of it to be honest, especially since it’s holidays and you just wanted to stay home and watch netflix. 

You and your parents arrive at this gorgeous fancy restaurant, you’re escorted to a private room. You automatically think your parents friends are extremely rich, you enter the private dining room. Your eyes first catch a well dressed asian couple, the man wore a crisp dark blue suit with a white undershirt and the woman looked beautiful in a sleek elegant long black dress, with pearls and her short hair. Your parents suddenly blocked your view as they hugged and shook hands with their friend and exchanging pleasantries. Your mum introduces you to them “y/n this is Mr and Mrs Park”, you smile politely and say “it’s very nice to meet you Mr and Mrs Park.” Mrs Park exclaims “wow y/n you’re so pretty and grown up, let me introduce you to your son, I think you two will get along since you’re the same age.” You look around and you spotted him, your breath hitched. In front of you was a completely drop dead gorgeous guy around your age, he looked so good in a black suit which contrasted his dyed light brown hair. He looks at you, and smiles charmingly, and even with him just smiling at you, your heart sped up significantly. Then you heard his melodic voice “Hi, I’m Park Jihoon, it’s nice to meet you” as he introduced himself to you he grabbed your hand and kissed it. You became a puddle of goo, quite a few of guys have done that but no one has ever made you feel that way. He was like your prince charming. You remembered your manners and you smiled back flirtatiously (you think, you have no idea how to flirt tbh). “Hi Jihoon, my name’s y/n, it’s nice to meet you too.” 

The table was circular so you end up sitting between your mum and Jihoon. As the adults make small talk, Jihoon taps you lightly on the shoulder, and asks you “I heard you’re going to the school I’m transferring to, could you tell me about it?” You guys have this amazing connection which makes you both just instantly comfortable with each other. Even though he was adorably shy at first. You never felt so at ease with someone you just met. You talk about school for all of the first course, you guys joke around and laugh a lot. You tell him all about the sports because he wants to join the dance crew, the basketball and soccer team. You also talk about academics and how both of you suck at maths. You tease him about that he’s going to have so many admirers and he replies smirking “I only need one admirer, and I have a girl in mind.” Your heart sinks thinking he likes someone (you’re an idiot) but you don’t show your disappointment, you give a half hearted smile and ask who she is. He says coyly “it’s a secret” which he finishes with a wink. In his mind he was like wtf ew what are you doing and when did you become such a cheese freak but like you really do need to impress this girl she’s amazing. Your heart flutters again and you can’t only say it’s just attraction, Park Jihoon makes you feel things you’ve never felt before. Before you could say anything to tease him about his cheesiness, you accidentally drop your knife onto the floor. Your mum looks super angry, she sometimes snaps at the smallest things especially infront of special people. She scolds you quietly enough for only you and unfortunately Jihoon to hear “y/n stop being a complete embarrassment and disappointment to our family, act like the proper lady, I raised you to be.” You downcast your head in shame, you hold back a few tears and even though you don’t usually cry when your own mum says that, it hurts. 

Jihoon was so pissed off that your own mother said that to you and wanted to comfort you so badly. He lightly placed his hand on yours and squeezed it softly. He shows you a set of couple outfits, a pale pink hoodie with black sweatpants and white shoes for him and a cropped pale pink hoodie with black leggings and white shoes for you. You can’t deny it’s a pretty cute outfit even though it’s overwhelmingly pink, you don’t mind though. You smile at him and say “they look cute, I’ll try mine on but couple outfits really Jihoon?” He blushes, because he did want to look like a couple and he really didn’t want to see any guys to flirt with you, especially because of how gorgeous you are. You both try on the couple outfits and you both say you look really good, you put your fancy outfits in the store bag and walk out of the store feeling so much more comfortable. He can’t wait to show you “his place” especially since you bugged him about it the whole time wanting to know what and where it is. You guys get in another cab and in the cab you get a bit sleepy so you don’t realise but you doze off leaning on Jihoon’s shoulder still holding hands. You guys lean on the willow tree and eat pizza and drink coke, you laugh and talk about the weirdest and randomest stuff to the deepest secrets you’ve never told anyone. Suddenly your eyes meet and Jihoon says to you softly “I like you y/n, this has been the best night of my life, even though I’ve only known you for a few hours, you make me feel so happy and just alive. So will you accept my feelings?” You beam in happiness and wrap your arms around him for a tight hug and say softly “I like you too Park Jihoon, you care, you make me laugh and you make feel like the happiest girl in the world. So of course i accept your feelings.” He picks you up in delight and you squeal as he spins you around, weirdly you end up dancing just twirling and slow dancing. He even puts on some music to make it more fun. You loved it, twirling, giggling, being close and dancing with Jihoon. You guys ended up being super worn out and just ended up snuggling while looking at the stars and naming all the constellations. After an hour or two of being in each other’s arms you both realise you should get back to your parents. No matter how bad of punishments you were going to get, you guys get another taxi and he rides all the way home with you and he has his arm around you, holding your hands and whispering soothing words so you aren’t freaking about what your parents would say or do. He drops you off at your front gate and he hugs you and whispers goodnight and double checks if you have his phone number which you do. He goes towards the taxi, you can’t help but feel slightly disappointed because a bit a lot of you wanted a kiss from him. Just as you thought that he came running back and whispered “I might be shy but I can’t just not take this chance” he then proceeds to kiss you softly and gently, it was much longer than you expected. But it felt like heaven and his lips tasted like the coca cola you guys drank at the park. You break apart and you’re both softly smiling. You say quietly to him “I’ll see you at school Jihoon-ah, I’ll miss you”, you proceed to kiss him on the cheek softly. He smiles back at you and replies “I’ll miss you too y/n.” You were so happy you met Jihoon, he really did make this one of the best nights of your life. Neat! This ties in with my actual education! 

Historically, western women in non-olive oil rich countries have always kept their hair up and/or braided as a matter of hygiene. No one wore it long and loose like we do today. (Good news for time travelers - you can slip through time with any haircut you want as long as you have a period hair covering!)

Remember, while shampoo is very modern, a desire for good hygiene goes back into human prehistory. 

One way to keep hair clean, healthy, and free of both dirt and bugs is to bind it up tight to the head and cover it up. And whaddya know, when you look at art history, European women only very recently stopped wearing hair coverings. 

Braiding type 1a and 1b hair close to the scalp then covering it kept the hair safe from breakage or collecting dirt or debris, plus provided an additional barrier against lice and other insects. (The Princess Leia honeybuns you see in art were most often fashionable coils of intricate cloth covering braids, not exposed hair.)

For a snippet of daily life, a medieval woman with type 1a or 1b hair would wake up with her nighttime braid in place (usually one or two simple strands.) After washing her face, pits, and groin, she’d get dressed, then she and her female family members would do one another’s hair for the day. (People didn’t live alone like we do now. There was always someone around.)

For the working classes, it was probably closer to 20 minutes. A relative would unravel your night braid and use coarse cloths to rub off any excess oil and sweat in a specific rhythmic pattern. Keeping your hair covered protects it from dirt and such, so most of what you have to worry about is sweat and oil. 

You or they would then brush your hair from scalp to end to distribute the oils, then a relative would put in your day braid. These were usually far more intricate and detailed than your night braid. People have always liked being pretty.  Once they were done, you’d return the favor.

Then everyone put on their wimples, scarves, hats, or whatever the fashionable hair covering was of the day. Depending on the weather and your wealth, you might have also have a simple linen under-layer that absorbed oils and sweat in order to protect your much fancier head covering. Remember, the head covering was about hygiene, not modesty! Look at medieval art. These things got ornate, and fashions for coverings changed as fast as fashions in modern hairstyles today. (My favorite line in the Niebelungenlied is, “she seductively brushed back her wimple...”)

When you came home, it was appropriate to take off your head scarf while indoors for the night, but you didn’t take your hair down. This is when you’d show off your braid du jour to the men in the house. 

Only when getting ready for bed would you finally take down your day braid, brush your hair 100 strokes with a wooden or boar bristle brush to distribute the oils (and remove tangles or dirt), then pull it into a loose braid comfortable for sleeping. (Historic night time beauty rituals were just as ornate as a modern 17 step Korean skincare routine.)

If your day braid was particularly intricate and/or tight you might keep it in place for a few days, but it was acknowledged that it was better for the hair to take it down and brush the oils through a few times a week. 

Instead of intricate hairstyles, this era is full of intricate hair coverings. 

Sometimes you see nearly transparent hair coverings in art. If you could afford that amazing imported Dhaka Muslin you were loaded! (Seriously, do yourself a favor and read up on the wild rise and fall of Dhaka Muslin in Europe!) 

TL;DR - long, loose type 1a and 1b hair weren’t A Thing until the 20th century. Women wore their hair up and usually covered for hygiene, then made those coverings pretty for fun. 

BUT WHAT ABOUT WIGS, YOU ASK

Wigs were widely regarded as uncomfortable, unhygienic, expensive, and cumbersome. They weren’t popular at all during the middle ages, for either sex. 

When they came into vogue, no one wore a wig one moment longer than they had to. You took that thing off as soon as you got home, much like women do with bras today. Very few people lived in a social class where those insanely ornate wigs of costume dramas were expected. Common people kept wearing the same type of braids and scarves they had all along. 

Did updos start among the working classes and move upwards? I'd assume piling all your hair on top of your head would make it easier to do factory work.

Updos have been pretty much universal, in times and places where they're fashionable, across class divides. You're absolutely right that one needs one's hair out of the way to do work, but if you have long hair, that pretty much extends to like...doing almost anything that isn't lounging around the house.
