National Lemonade Day

National Lemonade Day is dedicated to the refreshing summer drink. Lemons and sugarcane are both native to India, so it is likely that the modern drink is derived from a drink Indians drank called nimbu pani. Traditional or cloudy lemonade is popular in the United States, and consists of lemons and a sweetener, usually sugar. Pink lemonade adds flavors such as raspberry, strawberry, or other fruits to the mix, and it is rumored it was invented by a man who accidentally dropped cinnamon candies into his lemonade. Another form of lemonade is clear lemonade, which is popular in the United Kingdom, and it is more like a soft drink. It is many times used with beer to make shandy, and as a base for mixed drinks. While lemonade can be healthy because of its vitamin C content, the high level of sweeteners that are used to make it tends to negate its health benefits.

How to Observe

Sit back, relax, and have some lemonade. There are various ways to make your own lemonade, and here is one idea. You could also check around your neighborhood for lemonade stands, as there is a pretty good chance that there will be many set up to celebrate the day. If you have children or grandchildren you could help them set up their own stand. Lemonade Day is a group not directly connected with National Lemonade Day, but they help to get kids involved in starting lemonade stands, with the goal of fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and teaching business acumen. This may be a good day to look into getting your community involved with their programs.

Dina Abu Zour (@dinafamily): Dina is a mother of three children and currently pregnant. She is suffering from pregnancy-related proteinuria. Ghada Ayyad (@ghadak24): Ghada is a 21-year-old palestinian woman. Her father is a healthcare worker and her mother a teacher. She is from a family of 8 including 3 children under 16 years old. They are trying to evacuate to Egypt. (https://gofund.me/51547832) (promoted and verified by Banyule Palestine Action Group, an Instagram based group that verifies campaigns "by comparing them with IG profiles and supplied photos and by having conversations with beneficiaries and their supporters." I have also seen other vetted campaigns promoted by this group (e.g. @/shymaafamily's campaign, which is #141 on their vetted fundraiser list by el-shab-hussein and nabulsi, has also been promoted by this group), so I do trust this group. Ghada's campaign has also been promoted by Youth For Falesteen. Moreover, here is Ghada's Instagram: ghada_family24. She has had her instagram since at least 2021 (she has been tagged in a post from 2021)) (20 Aug: LOW FUNDS! Currently €1,915 raised of €60,000 target!!)

My brain is in shutdown mode. I spend hours and hours in bed, trying to find the courage to open my eyes. The lights in the bathroom are too bright. I reach for my headphones as soon as I'm downstairs. There's tension in my body, wrapped around my lungs and heart. I'm clenching my fists and my toes are wiggling unintentionally. Anxiety slipping through the cracks.

It's like I'm back to six months ago, locked up in my body and my mind, trying to remember to breathe and get enough food inside my stomach. I feel the constant need to cry. It's like I'm not a person. Like someone came, a thief in the night, and took some part of me away. I don't remember who I am, or who I'm supposed to be. Just a shell with biological needs.

These are the times, when you're deep in the trenches, that you have to remember that you are not evil and you are not lazy and you are not a bad person. You are ill.
