If you’ve ever heard someone advise you that for every -ve you hear, you need about 10-30 +ve reinforcements to overcome that one negative: thought, comment, criticism, feedback....etc. It’s entirely possible to myelinate new pathways in the brain so as to change the way we think & the way we perceive ourselves. How we perceive ourselves on moment to moment basis effects all outputs of the nervous system. This is true in movement, in strength as it is for life in general! If you've ever had a negative thought about 'maybe being too fatigued to achieve 1 more....set, repetition, lap etc & then shortly there after found yourself hitting failure, you've probably contributed subconsciously to bringing that failure on sooner than it might have come for you. In movement, if you perceive your body's capabilities to be limited strongly, then attempting to teach it to move in different ways is going to be far more difficult, as the pathways in the brain pertaining to those limitations will be far more extensively myelinated than those pertaining to creating new movement strategies. Conversely, if you visualise yourself moving well, mirror neurons will fire in your premotor cortex & they'll begin to actively attempt to put new motor plans together for you before you even start moving! You know the cliche “% of a sport is mental?” I’m 100% positive many of the greatest athletes that ever lived were frustrated when they couldn’t get something immediately. We live in a microwave society. Meaning we want instant gratification. We want to be liked. We want the spotlight. We want the best......instantly. Very few are willing to work for what they want. I find that the first couple of workouts my athletes get easily frustrated when they can’t pick up on things easily. This is WHY we train. Over and over and over and over and over. Rep until you master it. Until it is ingrained. Until you can do it on your sleep.
